Uncanny X-Men #424

Some books inspire people to become Catholic.

This book inspires Catholics to laugh their heads off over how someone doesn't know anything about their religion.

  2. The opening was the best ever! Never thought the "Take over the world" joke would be seen again.

  3. A horrific comic. AT least the art was nice...

  4. Dude, this has got to be one of the funniest reviews of a lousy issue of the x-men I have ever seen, which is one of many reasons I stopped reading Marvel and DC mainstream comics.
The major reason was that after Maximum Carnage Saga, things got really low quality with the whole clone saga and whatnot.
Anyway, seeing that how x-men has really stooped down to a new low with these issues, I'm glad that I rather have a better taste in much more better comics such as Blue Beetle, Black Summer and Umbrella Academy (which is some of the best comics I have ever read). I haven't gotten Revolution of the Mask series, mostly because I live in Sweden and it's pretty hard to get those kind of comics.
I really loved the cameos in the intro sequence, especially SpoonyOne as Doctor Insano, that was pure gold XD.
But I really like your insight on details and such and making funny remarks such as recapsing the whole Rapture plane thingie.
Well keep up the good work.

  5. The opening was incredibly entertaining! Spoony role for the win! I would actually watch a movie like that.

The actual review was pretty great too. I can't wait until next week.

  6. That was by far the greatest review I've ever seen. The ending was genius.
Oh, and I have Revolution of the Mask. It's OK, really, but nothing special. I know that it has many issues to turn more interesting, but it didn't captivate me as such. When all is said and done, it reminded me too much of the many orwellian narratives out there. Only with superheroes thrown in.

  9. Ahhh, Chuck Austen, how we'll miss you. Too bad, you're blacklisted from comics. I guess I'll have to watch "Tripping the Rift" to get my fix of Chuck Austen, the man with two first names.

Godspeed you glorified dude-bro. I'll miss the hilarity that you inflict upon the world of comics.

  10. So what was that music you used for the "Previously" sequence?

  11. From Star Trek II's score - "Surprise Attack."

  12. Oh my god I can't believe you busted out the Zappa at the same exact time I did!

Nightcrawler=Pope=fake end times...WTF? That's got to be one of the stupidest plans ever. I'm glad they did it, though, because it gave you the chance to review it, which was hilarious.

  13. The only way I can picture The Church of Humanity's plan as halfway making sense would be if they were a Protestant Millennialism sect that somehow infiltrated the Catholic Church as a means of discrediting other branches of Christianity... but well I guess Austin didn't really put much thought into this.

    INSANEO!!!!

  14. I loved that opening! It was great!! was the guy who always plays a guy from India in TGWTG (with the NC to be exact) was parodying Suresh (sp?) from Heroes? I swear he was and I love him for that :D

I really don't get what was with Kurt being a Pope... and what's with Catholicism being the ONE AND ONLY religion people can turn to once the world is thrown into total chaos?? XDDD

And *gasp* a woman was behind it all?? REALLY?? sheesh what a great plot twist... because before this comic only men wanted to take over the world XD

but either way I laughed a lot, thank you :D

P.S.: Your "I'M A MAN" has become the most awesome thing on earth XD, you should consider making a t-shirt of it XDDD

  15. So.... Nightcrawler is the main character in these and yet he's not on either cover? Weird...

(apologies for the Japanese text, I first got a blogger account for a Japanese class)

  16. Were we really so hopeful as to expect narrative coherence and entertainment from a comic written by Chuck Austen? Sir. . . ;p

Awesome review on TGWTG by the way. I don't know how you're going to top that opening but I'm eager to see you try.

  17. I agree with The Cheap-Arse Film Critic: The art was nice in that comic.

I came to the page from tvtropes (Rape as Backstory?) so I had to wait til the end of your commentary which exposed me to everything before it.

As a fan of X-men, and Nightcrawler, your interesting commentary has opened my eyes to the not-so-great writing that has bothered me in X-men.

That said, although your video was very interesting, I still dont understand the first like 2 minutes.

  18. It's a parody of "Previously on..." things that TV shows do. In this case, it features cameos from other talent at ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com. It really isn't supposed to make any sense at all, plus it references one or two other reviews I've done.

  19. Something's wrong with your vid, Linkara.

When I pressed play, the episode to
this vid doesn't show or there's
    another episode in the "Uncanny
X-Men #424" vid you have here.

  20. Yeah, something seems to be wrong with the file. I'm reuploading it now.

  21. This (the comic) is pretty offensive crap, and I'm saying that as an agnostic. The weird thing is, it seems that the author really believed he was writing something deep and meaningful about faith and organised religion. Instead, it's just horribly smug and betrays his ignorance of the religion he's criticising.

My guess is that Austen was trying to ape "God Loves, Man Kills", except that was actually good, and the villain's plan and motives made a small amount of sense.

  22. I just rewatched this episode and I gotta tell you the story of my 5 years old niece.

She walked into the room halfway the video and continued watchig it with me. She's polish-german, so she didnt understand a word, but enjoyed the pictures, so I didnt really mind her watching with me. (frankly, she wasnt even disturbed by any violent pictures)
Then, when we saw the "tablets of religions", she asked what is it. I hesitated for a moment and only a while later replied "Its candy." This was so hilarious I still cant stop smiling :)

  24. At first, I thought you were snickering because the dead mutant was Turtle-Boy. Then I saw where his face was...

  25. This is a rather late comment, but I think it still bears posting.

I enjoyed the review, but I have one strong dissent. When you talked about religious folk being offended by the idea of "all religions pray to the same god," you were showing the list of religions (the one that looks like a bunch of buttons) and one of the easily seen names was the Baha'i Faith. You should know that one of the central tenants of the Baha'i Faith is that all religions DO pray to the same god, just by different names. I should know, I used to be one (agnostic now).

Seriously, if someone's offended by the idea of "God by different names," they'd have to be pretty fundamentalist.

  26. "Seriously, if someone's offended by the idea of "God by different names," they'd have to be pretty fundamentalist."

...or that they do NOT subscribe to the same beliefs as the Baha'i.

Seriously, world religions are wildly complicated matters and view God differently (and as such represent God differently). To say "same God, different names" so dismissively betrays the author's obvious lack of understanding when it comes to theological matters.

So yeah, Linkara has a point.

It isn't a matter of being a fundie. It's a matter of being aware and educated on the realities and expressions of people's faith.

  27. Actually, he didn't get that Genesis quote right. It was Genesis 1:28-30; but that's understandable as a typo.

  28. An added fun fact: Catholic priests don't train one-on-one the way it's described. They go to seminaries, which are basically YEARS AND YEARS of "priest college." You can't just pop out a few nights a week and then be ordained after a little while.

  29. I know this is somewhat late, but thank you for the best Kerr Avon impression i've seen in years.

    And the review obviously.

  30. Killer wafers? You've got to be kidding me...

  31. Wait ... Wait ... this takes place in a universe where the Greek and Norse pantheons have been shot to exist, and the Church of Humanity seriously thinks having a mutant for a pope who kind of sort of looks like a demon (which actually, no, no he doesn't - he has a tail and weird coloring, he doesn't have horns or a forked tongue or anything) is going to shake people's faith? Anyone who is still a Christian in the Marvel Universe at this point has already dealt with the bombshell of having Thor and Hercules and their godly foes running around but, oh no, Nightcrawler being the pope is just too much?! What kind of sense does that make?!
