I met Jeri Ryan at her first Star Trek convention. She really is a great actress and I really loved her stories about her son's reaction to her fame as Seven of Nine.
In Episode 8, we get the most nonsensical but awesome weapon ever.
...I'm kinda disappointed that it's not a gun that shoots flaming chainsaw nunchaku.
I always felt sorry for Jeri Ryan and Jolene Blaylock, because I could tell from interviews how smart and talented they both are, and it pissed me off how they were both brought on just to appeal to creepy mouthbreathing nerds.
Wouldn't there be Klingons somewhere in Starfleet who might be a little put off that one of the training missions was essentially virtual slaughter of their species?
I get the feeling that this story would have actually worked better as a below-the-decks episode.
My personal fave weapon in the entire game (#2 is the Tetryon Pulse Disruptor). Of course, NEITHER help me in multiplayer when Dad gets that blasted Arc Welder......
So... I know that only the live action TV shows and movies are considered canon, but is Elite Forces even part of an expanded universe with something like a personal Photon Torpedo launcher? Also, I'm curious about you thoughts on the other Star Treks (ToS, TNG, DS9) and especially the last episode of The Next Generation.
The whole "find the pad to gain access to a locker which contains the I-MOD"-thing is from Elite Force 2! And yes, it makes no sense to carry a weapon that normally serves as a weapon for spaceships. And yes, it's a shame that the best actresses always get used as "eye-candy" on Star Trek.
From what I understand at least, the personal Photon Torpedo launcher is basically their replacement of the Quake III rocket launcher, which while not making sense basically winds up as being a plot convenience I think via the next level, and also I guess if you really wanted to you could make a smaller version of a photon torpedo with a smaller yield for being used by personnel. It probably would not be as good an idea as it is in this game, though.
Also it feels like the limitations of the game's engine really start shining through in the later levels starting with the cube. For instance I encountered a hilarious glitch where Nelson McPornstache would get shot in the scripted event, fall down, get up, fall down, get up, and so on about 4 or 5 times all the while replaying the "Oh no Nelson's been hit!" speech line everytime it happened. Add that to pathfinding woes and another problem that cropped up for me on the upcoming level and it really speaks to the design team being able to get what they did out of the Quake III engine while probably pushing it as far as it could go at the time, despite the bugs that come up from their efforts.
Willem: IIRC, every Star Trek game Activision made (Armada I and II, Away Team, Starfleet Command III, Hidden Evil, both Elite Forces) all take place in the same continuity.
Of course, this is completely seperate from the novelverse canon and the show's canon and the old Interplay Games' movie-era canon.
So, Species 8472 heil Hitler and tells Sora to suck his wingwang? (Sorry, little Donald Duck in-joke there).
That's one problem I have with any FPS that forces you to tackle missions with a group, especially if that group is AI-controlled; you always have at least 25% of your team made up of morons. In this case, I'd venture to guess between 75%-99.999%. Give me solo games, any day, and regulate the co-op to multiplayer deathmatches.
And yes, the Personalized Photon Torpedo Launcher is ridiculously cool, if impractical. I'm kinda disappointed the explosion for the torpedoes weren't larger, but I guess considering the confined spaces you're forced into with this game, that would be more of a bad thing than a good.
You know, since this is a Let's Play... Let's do challenges! :D
I challenge you to: only use the basic phaser in the next mission (unless there are borg, on which you can use whatever) OR only shoot while being in the air in the next mission (ex. from jumping).
After watching episode 7, I'm reminded why I usually let as many of the team as I could get killed on every mission. It meant I didn't have them getting in my way all the time...
Also, I know that in the novels, there were regular references to "photon mortars," which were much smaller-yield weapons based on the photon torpedo technology and intended for Starfleet Marines to use as portable artillery. That's probably what they *should* have called the "portable torpedo launcher"...

As always Linkara, you brighten my usually dreary Mondays.
ReplyDeleteThank you!

Ah, but the awesome weapon does not shoot shurikens and lightning. Therefore it is not the most awesome weapon ever.
ReplyDelete... but it is awesome. Seriously, torpedoes?! XD Ace!

Somehow, 'Died in your arms tonight' was so in for this ep.
ReplyDeleteAnd your Yakety Sax is really beyond praise. It's awesomely good.
I'm actually looking forward to more singing by you...
And is it me, or is Elite Force a really short game?
Linkara, I dare you to use the "Dont you know who I am? Im 'Ensign Munro', bitch!" line in next part. Come on, you know you want it!
