Cable #1

I think this comic was really just a promotional piece to try to create fingerbeam technology.

  1. I'm tempted to say first but I won't. Anyways I have never really liked Cable

  2. The title card's art today is really awesome! Make sure to pat your artist on the back. :)

  3. Does Blood Gun have a gun for a face?

  4. 2 Questions
    1. Are you using a new editing software?
    2. Which Super Soaker did you use for Cables gun?

  5. Stryfe looks like some piece of weather-monitoring equipment.

I expect a narration box to say something like:

"The zephyr wind howls around me at 28 knots with scattered showers burning off mid-day to partly-cloudy sunshine..."

    ReplyDelete
  6. You know, from what I've read, Liefeld didn't create Cable's background either. He just drew up a character and nothing more. All his background came from later writers, much like Deadpool's personality.

    ReplyDelete
  7. will you be using your new gun in any future reviews

  8. 1. I want a Marvel Legends Kain action figure but only if they give him rocket-punch action.

    2. Bloodgun should get a backup feature in Revolution of the Mask.

    3. Stryfe looks like one of those off-brand action figure toys you find Big Lots and Dollar General.

    4. David Mack is the only man who can make horizontal spread pages work.

    5. Loved the guest-appearance by Cable at the end of the video.

  9. ...and suddenly you have the biggest boomstick of them all o_O

Maybe you could rent out your artist to make cover art for Marvel and DC? Looks like they could use the help.

I'd recommend helping with the comic art...but it looks like nothing and nobody could help THAT...

  10. 90s kid is still awesome. And this is somthing I get just watching you're reveiws. It seems all of Rob Leifeld's characters have one personality, and one power (as far as powers go some slightly varey in power, but the titular characters are besides the costumes are clones of one another) and that power and personality are BADASSness.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Also, why is it so many 90s superheros have pink energy.

    ReplyDelete
  12. How did you get that gun prop at the end there?

Anyways, this comic was really confusing as all hell. And the characters weren't really all that likeable. Nice job on the review.

(BTW: Good work on that Cable costume. ^_^)

  13. Great video! Love your stuff. One minor note though, the 'e' in 'forte' is silent. It's actually pronounced fort. (5 years of French has to be good for something. :-P)

  14. So does this mean you're retiring the flintlock?

  15. Wow that was a stinker.
That plot was on ADHD, flashback MODERN DAY Flashback MODERN DAY 3 days ago FLASHBACK!
What is Mechakara planning though? Hmmm.
    Amazing review Linkara.

  16. So Cable WASN'T sent by the linka-a-nator. With Insano busy rebuilding his lair (mutated killer robotic hamsters don't breed themselves after all ) I get the feeling someone else has a plan to exterminate the hat wearing critic (ellipsis).

In other words, good review and just what are you up to? Can't wait to see

  17. Dear heavens, this review made me think of manga I've read several times. Let's just start:

    1. Hands flying off as missiles? That's an old super-robot standby. It's shame he didn't fire missiles out of his chest right afterward, though.
    2. Who names their kid Cain? Well, as Yuki Kaori tells us, a parent who hates their child and tries repeatedly to kill them. Did the Marvel version get a happy back story like that?
    3. No dialog, no plot, just a guy with a gun shooting things? That's not "BloodGun," that's "Blame!"
(okay, to be fair, it has a plot, but it's damn hard to follow with minimal dialog)
    4. Ellipses.... so... freakin'... sick of those... in so many... manga... series...

So never fear; America and the 90s do not have a monopoly on either weirdness or badness.

    ReplyDelete
  18. That was some ending! I really don't like Cable.
And why does Cable look like Cessepool from G.I.Joe?

    ReplyDelete
  19. MLF Hair: Even Syndrone from "The Incredibles" would find that haircut absurb!

Weapon X: Not so much a profitable toy, as they were testing to see how many body parts they could turn into firearms.

Wow: I actually forgot how scary your "Time Warp" bobbing head can look. Good Old Fashioned Nightmare Fuel.

  20. Great work, Linkara! I thought this was a really nice review, make me giggle like a schoolgirl a couple of times.

I'm curious, on the subject of Marvel, have you considered doing reviews on the Ultimate Marvel line? Would love to see your take on Jeph Leob's Ultimates, or Ultimatum, which is really like Marvel's own version of Countdown. XD

    ReplyDelete
  21. Wow, and this was supposed to be related to X-Men? Sure fooled me! Have fun with your new gun.

  23. I wish I could shoot gun blasts from my crotch.

    Wait, do I?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well, we've got Cable down. Any chance of seeing a Deadpool review sometime down the road?

    ReplyDelete
  25. "Does Blood Gun have a gun for a face?"
    That would be totally hardcore.

    "2 Questions
    1. Are you using a new editing software?
    2. Which Super Soaker did you use for Cables gun?"

    1. Kind of. After my upgrade to Windows 7, Microsoft Photostory stopped working, so now I'm editing the panels directly in Adobe Premiere Elements 7 instead of as separate files.

    2. SPF 2500. Thing shoots like a hose, but I hadn't played with it in years.

    ReplyDelete
  26. "How did you get that gun prop at the end there?"

I know it isn't exactly clear, but Cable dropped it. XD

    ReplyDelete
  27. "New gun!" BEST ENDING EVER!! PLEASE say we'll be seeing more of it!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I really preferred Cable's story arc from the 90's X-Men cartoon where his main goal was to stop Apocalypse from living long enough to take over the world by killing him in the past.

Also, I've got say that Spoony makes a better Squall than you make a Cable.

    -Draco Dracul

  29. Was it just me or was one of the Six Pack people basically just Big Bear out of DC's Forever People with a red face?

    ReplyDelete
  30. wow, with a comic like that, when was it exactly that cable became a 'cool character' in an actual way? i mean, jezz, the more and more you go through the 90's the more i wonder how we ever made it through alive (or how the industry actually survived XD )

    oh well. another fun review.

and woot! new guns... but wait, it's barrel is round. doesn't cable usually carry guns with that odd squarish (and some times doubled) barrels?

    ^_^;

    ReplyDelete
  31. Neat review as always. Though I thought it would've been funny if Cable ended up in the same room as 90's Kid so he could annoy the hell out of him.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I remember this from a letters page that came out around that time. The dude in the cloak that was joining the MLF in the sword raid that you named "Anakin" was Zero, the MLF's teleporter. He was drawn with a cloak for some reason. (And minus the identifying "0" on his facemask. Annnnnnd, I hate myself for knowing that.

  33. Seriously, Ancient Egypt seems to be the source of all kinds of evil power, comics and otherwise! I mean, are there any GOOD Ancient Egyptian powers/mummies/artefacts?

I want to see a Horus-themed hero with an "Isis" Alfred equivalent and enemies like Mecha Hammurabi!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Maybe the Soviet Union went bankrupt BECAUSE they brought those mechs.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Just when I think these episodes can't get any better, you smack me in the face with Cable #1.

I love how all of Liefeld's good characters (all 2 of them) are completely different now than they were then.

Wade "not Slade" Wilson to the glory we have today, take that Rob.

    Keep up the great work.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think you're having FAR too much fun playing '90s Kid ;-)

And the Bugs Bunny and Cablekara bits? Genius.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I didn't know cable had such a troubled past as a character...

I've come to think of him as a smart plotting know-it-all from the future. And now these narrations are totally washing that respect away.

Oh and BloodGun (or is it the kewl BludGun?) even as parody comic would've been awesome if done by you (or 90s kid).

    ReplyDelete
  38. Cable and Deadpool barely count as Liefeld creations. Two other people contest that they in fact created Cable (one of them succeeded in this claim i think) and Deadpool was just a cheap Deathstroke imitation at first.

Which leaves the only good Liefeld creations as... anyone who's now in Peter David's X-Factor Investigations.

Also I'm gonna back up that other guy and say you should definitely attack Loeb's Ultimates 3 or Ultimatum at some point. Both need a new arsehole ripped

    ReplyDelete
  39. At least its not a Photon Torpedo. I still think that Linkara might be able to defeat Ensign Munroeeee! Great review as alway Linkara.

    ReplyDelete
  40. To answer your last question, the bullets would likely ricochet against each other.
Or, from one troper to another, "Just think to yourself, 'it's just a show, i should really just relax!'"

    ReplyDelete
  41. I want to see a BloodGun comic.

    ReplyDelete
  42. you make a good point about the x-men! I always kept the two seperate about the allegory to racisim and all that other "stuff", and never gave it much thought

The look on your face after that Bugs Bunny panel, was beyond classic, and way more expressive on my thoughts on that line than anything i could articulate at this point! But what was the point of that line anyway?

sweet new gun! but you're not gonna abandon the old one are you?

so until they release the fingerbeam version of Super Soakers, MAKE MINE LINKARA!

    ReplyDelete
  43. What episode of MST3k did you take the "shuddup!" from?

Space Mutiny? I can tell it's Mike-era, but I just can't nail it down to a particular episode.

    Hello, Mr Linkara('_')ノ.
I have a question about the video: Right before you say "Let's dig into Cable number One", there is a picture of Deadpool facing off with Cable(both normally proportionned). Where does that picture comes from? Fanart? Actual comic? Thanks for answering(^-^).

    ReplyDelete
  45. The Mole People. Near the end when John Agar once again decides to open his yapper.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The picture comes from one of their Civil War tie-ins. Couldn't tell you which issue, though.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Wow. I'd hate for either of those guys to give me the finger.

Okay, I admit, that was bad. But waaaay too good to pass up. Great video Linkara. I look forward to next week.

I managed to pick up this issue from the quarter bin at the now-defunct God Mine Comics & Cards at Victoria circa-1999!

I went to Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy (The 7959 Fredrickburg Rd. location) at San Antonio on July 14, & checked out their quarter bin. I got these books:
"Mai The Psychic Girl" #28 (Eclipse; July 12, 1988. This is a great example of the early days of translated manga!)
"Phaze" #1 & #2 (Eclipse; 1988; A 1988 book more retarded than The New Guardians!)
"The Rovers" #1 & #2 (Malibu; 1987; This is one of the earliest Malibu comics. It is about a pair of high-school students who have after-school jobs as bounty hunters!)
"Tales of the Champions" #3 (Heroic Publishing; This book introduced a new version of Heroic's Tigress character. While the original Tigress was a typical 'bad girl' of the early 1990s comic book 'Dark Age', this new version was more 'lighter & softer': The new Tigress' alter-ego, Kassady Farrell, was a fun-loving high-school graduate who is granted the powers of the Tigress when she was bitten by a snake! This would have made a nice series, but the only other appearrance this Tigress made was in the next issue, a back-up in 'Flare' #36, & in 'Champions' #40! Apparently, the current version of Heroic Publishing dropped the all-new stygma in favor of shoving reprints of early-1990s stories! The most gregarious offender wa 'Flare Adventures', which stasrted out with lost stories set in the past, but quickly turned to reprinting shoddy 1992-1993 Flare, plus some new Chrissie Claus stories! Other books that went this road are: Witchirls, Inc.; Libery Comics; Flare; & Champions itself! Even some of the recent new series were terrible: he 'All-Girl Hero League' had some of the silliest chick to ever don spandex! 'The Sensational G-Girl' was a horribly drawn book about a 15-year old girl drawn overtly sexually, & 'Fantastic Girl', which might become the worst thing they ever published!
'Tigers of the Luftwaffe' #1 (Antarctic Press; August 2001)

I hope you enjoy this response!

  49. To be honest, I was never really a fan of Cable. I don't really like most characters like Cable actually. I know he's not just a future character, but that is what he was originally and forcing him to be the son of Scott and Madelyne Pryor didn't do anything to remove that fact that he is just another character from a different time/reality stuffed into one of the X-comics. Rachel Summers is all we need. At least she can be a really cool character at times and even if she is played off a Jean-lite at times, she does have enough of a personality when attached to the right writer.

I liked some of the stuff done in X-Man as well. Anytime where he was forced to be involved in big plots (Onslaught, The Tweleve) pretty much sucked because he doesn't belong. And don't get me started on the whole "Nate created Onslaught by ripping Xavier out of the astral plain" BS. Then of course the infamous Six Month Gap came into play and the character was ruinedm stripped of everything that made him interesting and eventually killed off.

  50. Kind of amusing that Cable went from DEATH BLOOD AND GUTS to this almost messianic must save the world type guy. Or at least he was in Cable & Deadpool, haven't read the Messiah War stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hrm, it was a good review as usual, but I wish you had talked a little more about how Cable turned from...well, this...into a more popular character that's still around.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm pretty sure I have this comic(ellipses)maybe even the first 5 issues or so. You leave me wondering if this storyline got any better. Now I must go dig through my boxes at my parents house.

Also, great use of the Bugs Bunny cartoon, I laughed my ass off.

I really like your reviews and this one was great, too. Although I've read only a few comics up to now (Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns, the usual obvious stuff) and I'm not familiar with most of the characters you mention, your reviews make me laugh. Thank you for telling me which comics I have to keep away from.

Oh, and that Patton joke you're using: I don't think it will ever grow old.

    Kind regards from Germany.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think Bloodgun's first mission should be to destroy all of the evil magic of egypt. Clearly, it's the source of all evil.

Excellent as usual. I loved your Cabel Scowl as the narration played near the end. By the way, is something wrong with the RSS feed, if you know anything about it?

Cable & Deadpool issue 32. I'm sad for knowing straight away but still

  56. Wait a second, isnt it spelled BlÜDGÜn?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm curious how bad Loeb could have screwd-up with the Ultimates 3.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm still wondering, what the colouring of the military man's camouflage suit is good for (@ 8:56). I don't suppose he has to be invisible in a flower shop ot something...

    Great review as usual.

I would have loved a reference to Sex machine from From Dusk till Dawn though. Firing guns from crotches is definitely his special subject. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  59. This is the one time I've disagreed with a review. I was a big (POST-Liefeld) Cable fan, and enjoyed this two-parter. It was a lead-in for X-cutioner's Song, and helped put a lot of stuff into context for those who didn't follow X-force.

Now I have to admit, after all this time, the dialogue is a bit... over the top Die-Hard-ian, but that was part of the charm back then. I mean, Silver Age writing was even cheesier, but we tend to forgive it because it was an earlier era.

That being said, nothing forgives the costume design. Shoulder pads? And Stryfe may have been a bad-ass villain during his short career, but that armor... Why, God, WHY?!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Great job on your review of Cable. (ellipsis)

Loved the end sequence where you actually face the 90s anti-hero himself (ellipsis) and outwit him, getting his BFG in the process.

  61. It's about time I ask: why Nirvana of all things in the background whenever the '90s Kid appears? I'm a long way from the US, so I guess Smells Like Teen Spirit was a tremendous hit there back then. It was raging here as well, but peeps like Billy Idol, Offspring, Green Day and M.C. Hammer were storming Serbia in those times, hence the question :B

I love the info on the creators you tend to share. I didn't know that Rob Leifeld created Deadpool, for instance.

    ReplyDelete
  62. "It's about time I ask: why Nirvana of all things in the background whenever the '90s Kid appears?"

To me, Nirvana and particularly that song help personify the 90s.
