You know, from what I've read, Liefeld didn't create Cable's background either. He just drew up a character and nothing more. All his background came from later writers, much like Deadpool's personality.
90s kid is still awesome. And this is somthing I get just watching you're reveiws. It seems all of Rob Leifeld's characters have one personality, and one power (as far as powers go some slightly varey in power, but the titular characters are besides the costumes are clones of one another) and that power and personality are BADASSness.
Great video! Love your stuff. One minor note though, the 'e' in 'forte' is silent. It's actually pronounced fort. (5 years of French has to be good for something. :-P)

Dear heavens, this review made me think of manga I've read several times. Let's just start:
1. Hands flying off as missiles? That's an old super-robot standby. It's shame he didn't fire missiles out of his chest right afterward, though. 2. Who names their kid Cain? Well, as Yuki Kaori tells us, a parent who hates their child and tries repeatedly to kill them. Did the Marvel version get a happy back story like that? 3. No dialog, no plot, just a guy with a gun shooting things? That's not "BloodGun," that's "Blame!" (okay, to be fair, it has a plot, but it's damn hard to follow with minimal dialog) 4. Ellipses.... so... freakin'... sick of those... in so many... manga... series...
So never fear; America and the 90s do not have a monopoly on either weirdness or badness.

1. Kind of. After my upgrade to Windows 7, Microsoft Photostory stopped working, so now I'm editing the panels directly in Adobe Premiere Elements 7 instead of as separate files.
2. SPF 2500. Thing shoots like a hose, but I hadn't played with it in years.
I really preferred Cable's story arc from the 90's X-Men cartoon where his main goal was to stop Apocalypse from living long enough to take over the world by killing him in the past.
Also, I've got say that Spoony makes a better Squall than you make a Cable.

I managed to pick up this issue from the quarter bin at the now-defunct God Mine Comics & Cards at Victoria circa-1999!
I went to Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy (The 7959 Fredrickburg Rd. location) at San Antonio on July 14, & checked out their quarter bin. I got these books: "Mai The Psychic Girl" #28 (Eclipse; July 12, 1988. This is a great example of the early days of translated manga!) "Phaze" #1 & #2 (Eclipse; 1988; A 1988 book more retarded than The New Guardians!) "The Rovers" #1 & #2 (Malibu; 1987; This is one of the earliest Malibu comics. It is about a pair of high-school students who have after-school jobs as bounty hunters!) "Tales of the Champions" #3 (Heroic Publishing;This book introduced a new version of Heroic's Tigress character. While the original Tigress was a typical 'bad girl' of the early 1990s comic book 'Dark Age', this new version was more 'lighter & softer': The new Tigress' alter-ego, Kassady Farrell, was a fun-loving high-school graduate who is granted the powers of the Tigress when she was bitten by a snake!This would have made a nice series, but the only other appearrance this Tigress made was in the next issue, a back-up in 'Flare' #36, & in 'Champions' #40! Apparently, the current version of Heroic Publishing dropped the all-new stygma in favor of shoving reprints of early-1990s stories! The most gregarious offender wa 'Flare Adventures', which stasrted out with lost stories set in the past, but quickly turned to reprinting shoddy 1992-1993 Flare, plus some new Chrissie Claus stories! Other books that went this road are: Witchirls, Inc.; Libery Comics; Flare; & Champions itself! Even some of the recent new series were terrible: he 'All-Girl Hero League' had some of the silliest chick to ever don spandex! 'The Sensational G-Girl' was a horribly drawn book about a 15-year old girl drawn overtly sexually, & 'Fantastic Girl', which might become the worst thing they ever published! 'Tigers of the Luftwaffe' #1 (Antarctic Press; August 2001)
To be honest, I was never really a fan of Cable. I don't really like most characters like Cable actually. I know he's not just a future character, but that is what he was originally and forcing him to be the son of Scott and Madelyne Pryor didn't do anything to remove that fact that he is just another character from a different time/reality stuffed into one of the X-comics. Rachel Summers is all we need. At least she can be a really cool character at times and even if she is played off a Jean-lite at times, she does have enough of a personality when attached to the right writer.
I liked some of the stuff done in X-Man as well. Anytime where he was forced to be involved in big plots (Onslaught, The Tweleve) pretty much sucked because he doesn't belong. And don't get me started on the whole "Nate created Onslaught by ripping Xavier out of the astral plain" BS. Then of course the infamous Six Month Gap came into play and the character was ruinedm stripped of everything that made him interesting and eventually killed off.
Kind of amusing that Cable went from DEATH BLOOD AND GUTS to this almost messianic must save the world type guy. Or at least he was in Cable & Deadpool, haven't read the Messiah War stuff.
Hrm, it was a good review as usual, but I wish you had talked a little more about how Cable turned from...well, this...into a more popular character that's still around.
I'm pretty sure I have this comic(ellipses)maybe even the first 5 issues or so. You leave me wondering if this storyline got any better. Now I must go dig through my boxes at my parents house.
Also, great use of the Bugs Bunny cartoon, I laughed my ass off.

Although I've read only a few comics up to now (Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns, the usual obvious stuff) and I'm not familiar with most of the characters you mention, your reviews make me laugh. I think Bloodgun's first mission should be to destroy all of the evil magic of egypt. Clearly, it's the source of all evil.

This is the one time I've disagreed with a review. I was a big (POST-Liefeld) Cable fan, and enjoyed this two-parter. It was a lead-in for X-cutioner's Song, and helped put a lot of stuff into context for those who didn't follow X-force.
Now I have to admit, after all this time, the dialogue is a bit... over the top Die-Hard-ian, but that was part of the charm back then. I mean, Silver Age writing was even cheesier, but we tend to forgive it because it was an earlier era.
That being said, nothing forgives the costume design. Shoulder pads? And Stryfe may have been a bad-ass villain during his short career, but that armor... Why, God, WHY?!
It's about time I ask: why Nirvana of all things in the background whenever the '90s Kid appears? I'm a long way from the US, so I guess Smells Like Teen Spirit was a tremendous hit there back then. It was raging here as well, but peeps like Billy Idol, Offspring, Green Day and M.C. Hammer were storming Serbia in those times, hence the question :B

This is the one time I've disagreed with a review. I was a big (POST-Liefeld) Cable fan, and enjoyed this two-parter. It was a lead-in for X-cutioner's Song, and helped put a lot of stuff into context for those who didn't follow X-force.
ReplyDeleteNow I have to admit, after all this time, the dialogue is a bit... over the top Die-Hard-ian, but that was part of the charm back then. I mean, Silver Age writing was even cheesier, but we tend to forgive it because it was an earlier era.
That being said, nothing forgives the costume design. Shoulder pads? And Stryfe may have been a bad-ass villain during his short career, but that armor... Why, God, WHY?!

ReplyDeleteLoved the end sequence where you actually face the 90s anti-hero himself (ellipsis) and outwit him, getting his BFG in the process.
It's about time I ask: why Nirvana of all things in the background whenever the '90s Kid appears? I'm a long way from the US, so I guess Smells Like Teen Spirit was a tremendous hit there back then. It was raging here as well, but peeps like Billy Idol, Offspring, Green Day and M.C. Hammer were storming Serbia in those times, hence the question :B
