Okay, since I've already received a half-dozen e-mails about this, YES I know Disney now owns Marvel. If I have something to say about it, I will say it.
Otherwise, the only Marvel-related news I have for you all is that Nightcat #1 will be released in a few hours.
I certainly hope that Marvel won't be altered because of its new ownership. It's always frustrating when a company suddenly does a 180 because of its new employer, such as the example that Dena gave for EA Games' dick move of scrapping Thrill Kill.
ReplyDeleteI suspect Marvel, which always seemed to me to be a bit wiser than DC in terms of business decisions(then again, I'm not a business expert so I could be wrong) and also always seemed to take greater care with their properties, wouldn't enter into a deal like this without some sort of zero/minimal interference clause in the deal. Though maybe Disney will have enough sense to force the undoing of One More Day(and hopefully not much power beyond that).
ReplyDeleteHow was it a dick move when the game would have been unsellable due to it's AO rating that would have been slapped on it?
ReplyDeleteCompanies are out to make money and an unsellable product that would cause trouble for the company isn't something you want.
Bad publicity is bad publicity and can often kill a company.
The Marvel Disney thing quite frankly isn't a surprise. Universal Studios has had Marvel themed rides, stores etc for years.
The worst possible outcome of this would be if Disney made Marvel cut their movie deals so THEY could produce all their future movies...
ReplyDeleteWhat scares me is that I can picture Disney doing something like that (Jonas Brothers as X-Men, perhaps?).
Let's hope they'll limit themselves to reaping the money off Marvel, instead of doing any executive meddling.
ReplyDeleteBut it's Disney, so you never know!
When someone takes over a company, how much really changes?
ReplyDeleteGoffy is "The Punisher".
ReplyDeleteI hope this dosen't mean good bye to the punisher (Yes, I know his a hypocrite, but he's still a badass)
ReplyDeleteMaybe this is the horrible deal Joe Quesada had to make with the devil when he needed help in ruining a great character.
ReplyDeleteHouse of Mouse meets House of Ideas? All I can say is I wish I'd known Marvel was for sale! I'd have dug up those penny jars in the yard!
ReplyDeleteI smell a vlog entry in the future after it becomes clear what this will entail, in greater detail
ReplyDeleteanyway cant wait to see the nightcat video later
People still read Marvel?
ReplyDeleteHouse of M(ouse)!
ReplyDeletewell, it would certainly be fun to play with spider-man in your party in kingdom hearts 4.
Disney own mirrmax and that hasn't harmed there creative output. but i wish the would get rid of Quesada he's so patronizing to the fans but has a great business head he did get the rites to marvel man. so probably just don't let him near the creative areas in marvel.
ReplyDeleteI'm of two minds.
ReplyDeleteIt bothers me that so much of the entertainment industry is being consolidated under four or five massive corporations because monopolies are bad for consumers and the market.
But at the same time, I hope this means that Disney will place some kind of oversight on Joe Quesada and maybe undo some of the damage he's done, especially to Spider-Man.
CZ: That actually sounds like a funny idea.
ReplyDeleteYou poor thing. My second reaction to that news was "Oh Lord, Lewis is going to get EIGHTY THOUSAND EMAILS."
ReplyDeleteAs far as the news itself, I'm not versed well enough in company buyouts to really know what kind of impact this will have on the end product. What I am wondering is just how much of the Marvel line Disney bought. See, Time Warner owns DC, and whenever DC wants to make a movie, it has to go through all kinds of T-W BS, and that's why aside from the Batman films, we rarely see a decent DC movie. But Marvel Entertainment has its own in-house movie studio and retains every bit of creative control, which is why Marvel films are so applauded. (Note that the X-Men movies were done by Fox.)
I reserve judgment on what this will mean for the comic line, but I do have reservations about what it will mean for future Marvel movie projects.
Why would disney would want to buy Marvel with such anti-heroes like Punisher,Ghost Rder and Deadpool.Since we all know that disney is family friendly. And if they only take money its fine but if they start messing up the movies i will give up on my favorites heroes.
ReplyDeleteI just hope guys like Deadpool don't end up being censored and "kiddified".
ReplyDeleteSpiderman and X-men might fit, but dang it, what's gonna happen to Deadpool?!
Sorry, I just have to say it...
ReplyDeleteLILO AND SNIKT!
I don't know how I feel about this yet ... I'll just wait n see. But in the back of my mind, (you know that little hamster running on its wheel) I seem to remember when Disney took over ABC for awhile in the 90's. On 770WABC radio at the time was a host I liked by the name of Bob Grant. He was very out-spoken and very controversial and when the mouse took over he was very quickly fired. (I know everyone says it was because of the Ron Brown remarks, but Grant has said far worst in the past and remained on the air.) To me it seems Disney does not like controversy and will change, alter or get rid of anything that is likely to cause a fuss. Maybe Disney has changed since then ... I'll just wait n see.

ReplyDeleteHopefully Spider-man won't do anything so blatantly product placement-y
Though, Truce, I find the idea of Dark Phoenix becoming a Disney Princess and The Mighty Duck Avengers interesting. Who is PK again?
what is worse spiderman making a deal with the devil or marvel making a deal with disney? oh well at least i can kick wolverine in the balls next time i go to Disney land.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anything will change, Disney will just make money off it.
ReplyDeleteBlake - I doubt anything will be worse than that Itsy Bitsy Spider singing Spider-Man doll I saw in a store once. And this was months ago.
ReplyDelete&
PK is the nickname Donald Duck's superhero identity, Paperinik, amoung many other aliases he has been called. I know him as PK from the PS2 video game they released about the character.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paperinik.
but yeah I remember when Full House decided to go to Disney World, and had 2 episodes there. A very odd thing. Hope Marvel don't do the same!
Maybe this means Disney Channel will finally have some quality programming ^_^ Also it could be nice to see a return of the PK magazines which could be a possibility since they now have a company known for superhero comics in their fold
ReplyDeleteI don't think they'll get rid of the mature content; Disney produces plenty of that under Touchstone. They did the right thing letting Pixar do whatever it wants when they bought it, so I think whoever their CEO is now knows how to acquire properly (can't remember his name now)
ReplyDeleteEh, I believe Madfather of Deviantart said it best; "Anything Disney could do to ruin Marvel, Marvel has already done to themselves at some point." It's really not something we need to worry about too much. Also, there have been some "mature" projects funded by Disney, so that's there's no need to worry about that.
ReplyDeleteSo Marvel is now a subsidiary of Disney... So what's the big deal?
ReplyDeleteDC has been a subsidiary of Warner Bros. for YEARS!
DC and Marvel are corporate rivals...
Disney and Warner Bros. are corporate rivals...
If you ask me, it's a match made in heaven!
