DOUBLE FEATURE!

A double feature of Atop the Fourth Wall episodes and the end of the "His Blue Soul" storyline!

Youngblood #4

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

NOTE: For those that dislike storylines, feel free to skip past the first eight minutes.

Also, due to the length of this video, a split version is available below.

PART 1:

PART 2:

  1. I need these. Especially to get through tomorrow.

  2. i am getting an overdose of you tonight with two videos and the Cameo you did in Diamanda Hagan review of the Next Doctor, what was that accent you were trying to do there

  3. (1) Why is your jacket suddenly leather?

    (2) Why does the background go black that one time in the Search for Spock review

    (3) STORYLINE TOTALLY WORTH IT

    ReplyDelete
  4. 2 Things

    1) I kind of thought that Vyce would be an ally against Mechakara. Oh well.

    2) Search for Spock at 23:00 "And without a Digivice to help out."
WHOO-HOO! LOVE THE DIGIMON REFERENCE! SEASONS 1 AND 2 RULE!

PS You should start bringing in that Digivice for the Story lines. Could be a good piece of equipment.

  5. Just for the record that is a sick Tom Servo robot (been watching mst3k for the first time recently and can tell you right now that looks to be about show quality). On a slightly more negative note I felt like the blood effect was kinda unnecessary in this episode, and came off as a kind of overkill for lack of a better wording. However thats just my opinion and no matter what these two episodes were beyond awesome.

  6. Can't help feel the end was a bit anticlimactic. The first battle with Lord Vyce was a lot better. Loved the review, I had that comic once.

  7. Loved it. Nice ending to this storyline, though I don't understand how this ties into the bonus ending for Suburban Knights on the DVD.

I see Youngblood is continuing to be just as god-awful as ever.

Wtf was with Diehard holding his crotch (or at least that's what the art looked like) when getting punched by that Darksied ripoff?

And in that Pitt comic, the artwork on the kid distressed me. His head was way too large for his body. DX

The Star Trek comic didn't seem that bad. You've convinced me that I really, really need to watch the movies - I've only see Generations, part of Trek IV, and First Contact.

  8. To expand on "Anonymous" (fourth comment from the the top) #2 question above, and to save you time searching the video for it, the missing background occurs around the 11 minute mark in the Search for Spock video.

  9. As one of your older fans(I was a teenager in the 90s) I remember rippin being slang for being really pissed off...but maybe it was just a boston thing

Just wanted to say that I cant get enough of you tearing up Leifeld. I love it when you truly HATE something..countdown, cry for justice, ultimatum

    ReplyDelete
  10. All I can say is, totally freaking awesome! My jaw dropped when Vyce made his return, although in a less threatening form.

So now the question is, will you be doing a review of Star Trek 4 (if there is a comic book adaptation) and what will we be expecting in terms of story line stuff?

    ReplyDelete
  11. *Claps* Bravo! Linkara you just explained why i love Star Trek 3 so much

    ReplyDelete
  12. Have you had that jacket for a while and I'm just noticing it now? Kinda looks like the number Xander wore in the latter seasons of "Buffy". Either way looks good.

Enjoyed the look at Krugg. After Chuck and Doug reviewed Trek 3, this unique angle is a refreshing new take.

    ReplyDelete
  13. "Beep beep, I am a robot". Yeah, maybe you need to sleep considering all you've been through.

I think everything that needs to be said about Youngblood has been said, but it's still to get a yearly intentional kicking of Liefeld's butt considering it got you into reviewing in the first place. And thanks for finally revealing why "Die Hard's Crotch" will never leave the opening...honestly I sort of thought before it should be updated but your explanation makes a ton of sense.

Didn't quite expect Vyce to be back as the evil Pollo, but it makes a lot of sense considering he manipulated the Mechakara hand and probably used it to try and pin it on him. With Mechakara causing a lot of other problems we sort of don't need him all the time anyway.

As for the "Search for Spock" review, honestly you brought a lot more to it than Nostalgia Critic did. I don't even watch him anymore but decided to see the Star Trek stuff after seeing the Insurrection review (which was fun BTW). He seemed a tad too obsessed in going on with a lot of his typical stuff while you more or less brought up some of the interesting aspects of III...though I almost expected a couple of his bits to maybe leak into this review in connection like the infamous "Genesis?" bit...I heard that weird alien's voice when I saw him in that panel, you know. And it's somewhat weird that Christopher Lloyd would play a Klingon the same time he did another alien in "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension"...yet before Doc Brown.

  14. Gareat Reviews of Youngblood and Star Trek III - I like the storyline and - honestly - I was thinking, that it would just be Pollo, returnin to his old body.

But - more disturbing - is Vyce just insane OR is the entity still out there? I mean - Linkara "killed" it, by challenging it to explore "what happened to an outer god when it dies" but... maybe Vyce knows it better?

And did I get it right? Pollo tried to contact Linkara? Somehow I did not see that.

So, I hope you did get a good nights sleep Linkara, your effort was worth it. Both videos were great.

    *bows his head*
    Well Done, well done.

  15. Sigh...Y'know Linkara, while it was funny, I have to admit I had mixed feelings for your "Youngblood" #4 review. Why? Because...I...actually...like...Youngblood. Oh, don't get me wrong, it SUUUUCCCCKKKKSSSS!!! But I DO get a good kick out of it, sort of a "So bad, it's good" vibe, y'know? Also, three more things:

    1. From what I can gather, Brigade #4 didn't have the Brigade team and the Youngblood team crossing over. It was just two different stories in the same book.
2.Apparently, ALAN FREAKIN' MOORE wrote Youngblood...for 2 issues. There WAS a third issue, but that was printed in another book.
    3. NO mention of the re-opening of Extreme Studios at Image Comics this year?! I AM DISSAPOINT, LINKARA!!!
    Please Respond!!!

  16. Not going to be able to watch and comment on the second video till later tonight, but I really liked the Young Blood review. You managed to use a few good jokes with different varitions enough that a chorus of "bad art, stupid fight, bad art, stupid fight" managed to stay pretty fresh.

Also? Biblical equivalent of Armageddon? As opposed to what??? Isn't the Biblical version of the Battle of Armageddon (a valley, a place) the default version?

    ReplyDelete
  17. There are two spots during the Search for Spock review where it looks like your green screen isn't working. One is a little over 14 minutes in and the second is at 41 minutes. Other than that (which can probably be attributed to rushing to get two reviews, one of which is twice the length of a standard review, done on the same day), great reviews.

    ReplyDelete
  18. If for crazy reason you decide to retire from this show, I am now convinced you could nearly pull off a one-man Star Trek show on the stage (I say nearly because I'd need to hear your Uhura, can't remember if its been done yet). Once again, you're proving to be better than TV these days (though facing strong competition from How I Met Your Mother, despite that being lighthearted in the arcs) and the reviews are the highlight of every Tuesday morning (Australian, in case you forgot).

OK, enough sucking up, but I also want to say I loved the use of ROTJ footage, not just because of the analysis of such a great scene but also for positively referencing the movie, especially since it often gets downplayed in favour of ANH and ESB (I'm kind of biased due to the fact that ROTJ is my fave of the entire series, mostly for Luke's character evolution and the introduction of another villain, reminding us that even with a galactic threat, evil's still going to exist in other forms and carry on in its debauchery). Though for some reason, I'm guessing you slide more towards ESB, not that it's a bad thing, just a guess.

    Anyway, once again, outstanding work.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ahah! So that's why Tom Servo was missing at the end of Youngblood #4. Great forethought there. And I loved the throwback to your first Power Rangers review at the end. Poyo reviewing things is gold, but must be hell to process due to having to run it through a reader, thus why he hasn't gotten a full review episode.
Well, you've reformed one Viewer of Star Trek 3 on their view of Kruge. Nearly every damn role Christopher Lloyd Portrays is gold, even the bad ones.
Did honestly not expect VICE of your small rogues gallery to show up. But it does show his madness. I wouldn't be surprised that the reason he was aware of the Entity in the first place was he was the one that allowed it to come into being. What was that Batman Phrase: You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain? I think Vice qualifies for that at this point. No real savior would want statues erected in his honor, no matter their ego.
Loved the Digimon References, even though they seemed a bit out of place, organic versus artificial life and all. Come to thunk of it, the way vice is now, and from his explanation of how the entity came to be, they sound more like some of the XANA constructs from Code Lyoko...Which considering your age, I'd say even odds on whether you had seen that series or not.

From your bit about IDW, I'm betting you are already aware of their Star Trek TNG/Doctor Who Crossover coming in May.

  20. I can't wait for the Portal 2 fandub later, the audio from that game mixed in with footage of this video is expected. Also, you should have said, "Say hi to Wheatley for me," before kicking him into space.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The stinger: Somehow I doubt Pollo-Vyce will return. Great twist, by the way.

There's something I've been meaning to ask: Was the title for this arc, "His Blue Soul", a reference to the Batman: TAS episode "His Silicon Soul"?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Was honestly expecting the space core from Portal 2 to fly by in the last shot.

    ReplyDelete
  23. (1) Why is your jacket suddenly leather?

So Linkara can go door to door telling people that he's selling fine leather jackets.
I hope someone gets that reference.

    In-verse/story/plot elements:
    I KNEW it! *Sing~song*
While Linkara (the character) thinks he fully defeated the Entity, he really didn't.
Lord Vyce would know that wasn't the end of it since he has experience fighting it before. Who wants to bet that Lord Vyce also tried using the same means Linkara did to just throw it off for a while?

Many of the fans thought you killed it, but I've always taken what Linkara said to the Entity to be easily misinterpreted. So in hindsight, the Entity is keeping itself really busy going after another being like itself to test Linkara's question. If it succeeds, it will come back.
Only to be thrown off again by Linkara or pitted against something that could fully destroy it (Which would turn around and become another menace to deal with).

I think you mentioned my screen name in the recent Q & A video, right? I was wondering if I misheard it or not. About how the Entity was a man-made eldritch abomination? And wasn't truly exact Lovecraftian horror?

Since Lovecraft horror is about the great vast unknown aspects of nature and that man is unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Something man-made like the Entity kinda goes against that ideal. Doesn't mean it isn't scary in it's own right.

  24. All I can guess about why Rob working at DC is because of Jim Lee. Remember they used to work together. He probably owes Rob a favor. You think about that? I'm sorry, but I usually do not blame the company so much than I do the people running it. Jim Lee is power mad and deluded about his creative ability and Dan Didio is a complete and utter idiot who is slowly killing the company he runs. I hate Dan Didio. Rob is honestly just skating on Jim Lee's favor to him. I recommend just blaming Didio for it and everything that has gone wrong at DC.*sigh* Why is Rob working on Hawkman now? It will be a wonderful day when Rob, Dan, and Jim are fired. I would think after the book he is working on fails, he should be canned immediately.

On the first comic: I think Die-hard had a wedgie and the purple woman and the firehead guy (even I don't know or care about their names) noticed it. Then again, he is a robot so he shouldn't have a wedgie. Wait I thought Die-Hard was a robot. Why is he bleeding?! Pitt was dumb, 'nuff said. And... Vyce is back. AWESOME.

On Comic #2: Star Trek 3 was actually the first Star Trek movie I ever watched. And I like it. I think that it is a good movie. And yes, Christopher Lloyd is awesome, as always. I wouldn't blame DC for wiping out that other comic from continuity since, well, I do not think anyone thought Star Trek 3 was coming out. Kruge is a pretty interesting villain when you stop and think like you said. I think that giant hand is actually very unintentionally funny. Glad Pollo is back.
I actually feel sorry for Mr. Leonard Nemoy and his current career. He is known only for a gimmick and he can't escape that gimmick. I wish he had a better career after Star Trek than he had. I know that has nothing to do with the comic, but that is just how I have felt about him for a long time. Also, I know this is also off topic, but I have gotten into the Monthly Big Finish Doctor Who audio dramas and I wanted to know if you had any recommendations. I have the Sirens of Time, Omega, and Project: Twilight, all I like. What else do you recommend?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Great double feature, Linkara! And good reviews, too! But one question, thought. Whatever happened to your magic gun? At the part where you, Harvey, and Linksano get on the ship, you're wielding a generic laser thingy...

    ReplyDelete
  26. GENESIS?!

Nice analysis on Star Trek III. Did you know that Christopher Lloyd had a heck of a time with the scene where he says "Beam me up."? Before the final take, he would always spread his arms up, throw his head back, and bellow "BEAM ME UP!!" to the heavens. TvTropes' words, not mine.

    ReplyDelete
  27. so.... the new Pollo will get arms?
A hint to the Contest Winner? :3

There really were two scenes were you forgot to put in the background I guess, but it was an awesome storyline finale indeed!
Stayed up till 5am just for seeing it - totally worth it!
And I really, at no point, expected Lord Vyce. Well done!
Can't wait to see him showing up again to be honest x3

    ReplyDelete
  28. Admittedly, I know nothing about Star Trek, but maybe the Klingons didn't just beam down because it wouldn't be honorable to just teleport on top of someone? Like, maybe he thought it'd be cheating? Oh, and one more thing - dude, I TOTALLY didn't see that twist in the beginning coming! VYCE?! That made my day.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Boy, Lewis. You are a real champ for getting these videos in on time with no sleep. :)

Boy, I didn't think Lord Vyce was going to come back this way or this soon since I clearly remember you saying once that you are not sure what to do with his character now. I believe that was around the time of your "Electric Tale of Pikachu" review. You said you plans your stories 8 months in advance. Judging by the math, you had Vyce's return in mind for about 4 and a half months around that point. Maybe I misquoted you.

I also like how you emphasize character relationships in your storylines and the lengths you go to humanize Linkara while keeping the humor and snark intact. Personally, I think you were a bit harsh when you referred to him as "kind of an asshole" in your Sonic commentary. Maybe I am more tolerant of his childish behavior or maybe I am overanalyzing. Who's the windbag now eh? :x

Anyway, great review. Star Trek III is one that I like more than II because the photography and music is better and I love the idea of a friend risking everything to save another friend.

Last thought: I will be seeing that blue box in my nightmares now thanks to that voice. Hope you're happy.

    ReplyDelete
  30. "very little risk of that, I can assure you!"
that is probably one of my favorite lines on this show ever.
wait. no. "havin' some trouble there, lordy-loo?"
    THAT was my favorite.
also loved every second you do a Bones-voice.

I'm glad you talked so much about Lloyd's character; I never looked at him beyond being a generic Klingon, I'll definitely pay more attention to him next time I see StarTrek III.

    That ending was great XD

yes, Mccoy. HE lost all those arguments. just keep telling yourself that.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think this is the first time you ever referenced Star Wars (besides quotes).

Very good reviews, but dude next week you might want to cut it down to about twenty mins or so. Seriously you're on the verge of burn out.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I was never a Star Trek fan, but your review of Wrath of Khan did get me to check out the movie. Guess I need to go see Search for Spock now too.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I guess you missed but there were two times in review that I saw black background. I'm guessing because of how long you worked on these episodes you missed it.
What a twist at the end of Youngblood #4 review. Didn't see that coming.
I don't totally hate Star Trek 3 and I said when NCritic was reviewing the movies I actually liked it better then 4.
Leather jacket I realized was tribute to the one Kirk was wearing during the movie wasn't it?
Thanks for the all hard work I know you put in as mention on your Twitter and I hope you getting some sleep finally as I type this.

    ReplyDelete
  34. So Darkseid - I mean Darkthornn - comes from Apokolips - I mean D'khay - and travels between worlds using Boom Tubes? I mean Crash Tunnels?

I got it! Youngblood is the store brand knock off cereal of comics!

    ReplyDelete
  35. LOL. I noticed that after you comment on Kirk suddenly changing into his uniform, so did you. Kinda subtle but well played.

Also, with how things played it, it makes me wonder if Vyce and/or the Entity will make a comeback. I kinda hope not. This doesn't really seem like the type of show that needs recurring enemies.

    Another great episode nonetheless.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Nice end to the storyline, but I'm looking forward to you getting back to shorter reviews, maybe more slice of life stuff.

Your next story arc being based off of something from Doctor Who Or Booster Gold's adventures in time might be nice. I dunno-A future Linkara coming back? Just something to think about.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ooooohh, Vyce. Nice plot. Also, the book is Revelation, not Revelations. I am also baffled as to how Leifeld is still employed. Also, Armageddon is in the Bible; it's the site of a battle during the end times (thank you, Wikipedia!). So, yeah. Leifeld fails at plot, characterization, exposition, artwork, and research now. *clap, clap*

    captcha: exceriat. Seems appropriate.

    ReplyDelete
  38. By "Crash Tunnel" they mean "Boom Tube," right?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I agree with you (and James Rolfe) that Christopher Lloyd's performance as Kruge is the highlight of Star Trek III. When you think of Christopher Lloyd, you instantly think of his most famous role as the lovable Dr. Emmett L. Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy, which he usually reprises in the live action segments of the animated series, different commercials, and the (now tragically defunct) Universal theme park ride. But somehow he succeeds in playing incredibly intimidating villainous roles, no matter how good or bad the movie is.

Besides Kruge and Doc Brown, he's also best known for playing the very intimidating and frightening Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (by BTTF director Robert Zemeckis). Most of us who has seen it when we were younger may remember the character as an intimidating figure of justice with his grand plan of wiping out Toontown with his green acid he calls The Dip. Then there's the frightening side, when he turns out to be a murderous toon with glowing red eyes of death and a high-pitched cackle that will make your ears bleed.

The reason I want to bring him up was because compared to Kruge, Judge Doom was more intelligent and more precise with his desires. Sure he does have his minions of dumbass weasels to do some of his dirty work, but the man still has his brand of justice with wanting to punish the toons his own way by killing them all. The man is sadistic and terrifying that as a kid, it's difficult to watch this movie whenever he's on screen especially during the intense climax at the Acme warehouse. That's why he's one of the scariest and most remembered villains in nostalgia memory. Believe me, it's been so long since I saw that movie that I'm not sure as a 26 year old that I may handle this movie as much as when I was 6.

Oh and quick note since I'm on topic, I discovered on Wikipedia that there's a comic book sequel to the movie titled Roger Rabbit 2 : The Revenge of Doom. In it, a group of weasels find a cel containing an image of the evil toon and somehow got him back to life. I don't know if that's interesting or stupid, but if you have a copy of it, what do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yeah, so you're willing to destroy yourself just to prevent a ship from being taken? You have to understand that, from my perspective and probably a couple others, it also means that you were willing to sacrifice yourself when you do not need to. There will be other threats that will require the expertise you have, and its not wise to simply die when you have more to do. Never liked that idea in Star Trek when you also have stuff that's important.

Also, you were potentially getting rid of the ship, which limits your capabilities immensely. I'd figure you'd want to try and find a way to prevent its destruction so you're still capable against later opponents and not at a disadvantage, which happened to a number of color-coded superheroes I could mention with giant robots.

    ReplyDelete
  41. You're saying a lot of your fans, fans of a guy reviewing comic books, aren't COMIC BOOK FANS? That's a pretty big assumption there. That's like saying fans of The Simpsons aren't really big on the color yellow.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Youngblood #4

The Comic: Another Liefeld ... masterpiece... Ugh.

Your Arc: I did *NOT* see that coming, but it does explain why he was able to hide in the ship as well as he did.

    Star Trek 3:

The Comic: For actually being produced when the movie was, this one's not too bad. A few things they changed that they really shouldn't have, Kruge's motivation for trying to steal Genesis for example.

Your Arc: He'll be back, sooner or later, he'll be back, don't care what Linksano thinks about the limitations that body has.

    Fiery Little One

    ReplyDelete
  43. Your greenscreening seems to go black at several points. I'd suggest that you don't rely so much on special effects anyway...

But in all seriousness, your reviews are great (Though I disagree with your take on Kruge, you pointed out several things that completely went over my head when I watched the movie), and your plot is quite enjoyable.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I almost feel bad for Vyce. His constant battles with the Entity seem to have deluded him to the point that he can't even accept the possibility that it could be defeated by anyone other than himself. It's almost torture to see this seemingly tragic character survive to fight another day rather than face death. Then again, it's a good thing that Comicron-1 wasn't blown to bits. It's much too soon to dispose of such a good ship.

Also, props to that leather jacket. It reminded me of the Power Ranger outfits from the MMPR movie: same style, better polish. :D

    ReplyDelete
  45. DS9 fleshed out the Klingons more, creating more of a balance between the calculating Klingons of TOS and the space Vikings of TNG, making them a much more believable race. Plus they had General Martok, the best Klingon character in Star Trek.

Also, I always thought that Klingons were a genetically engineered slave race similar to the Jem'Hadar. But they rose up against their creators and destroyed them.

That would explain their creation myth, which states that the Klingons rose up against their gods and destroyed them. Plus, their physiology seems to be specifically designed for war and hard labor with lots of bones protecting their body and redundant organs.

It would also explain why such a warlike species in which scientists are shunned and disrespected managed to become so technologically advanced. They simply stole the technology of their creators.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I liked the Youngblood review better, if only because of some of their were more jokes that I liked. The Star Trek review was great though, and I've been expecting that you would do one for a storyline finale. I especially love how you integrated elements of the film into the storyline, particularly near the end.

This was a great storyline, although I felt that there could have been more build up to this double feature finale, if only because there were storyline episodes in January, but I understand that you need a break every once in a while. The twist legitimately surprised me and was well done, although I'm curious how it affects the end of the Zeo review.

So, are you actually going to review Red Hood and the Outlaws later this year, or was that just a throwaway gag?

Keep these storylines going! I really do love them, but these future episodes should help give people a nice reprieve.

    ReplyDelete
  47. okay now I've watched the second review and really loved the plot stuff and found your insights into the movie/comic um... insightful?

About the decompression bit, is there a story reason why you wern't being pulled off the floor? Like some kind of magnetic device, or was it just an inability to do the practical effect of you being pulled off the ground while holding on?

Also since you echo the plot points of the the Star Trek movies you review in your storyline, can we expect a Star Trek IV review where you travel back in time to find some extinct animals or a Star Trek V review where you answer the question "what does god need with a star ship?" Just kidding.

Seriously great plot line and I loved the bit with Tom Servo/Pollo reveiwing at th end... "And yet your arms move!"

"the only thing I can do... review a comic book" great line.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Fantastic episode Linkara, I loved all the action shots in Comicron 1.

One side note besides the obvious black screen glitches, you missed Airplane II: The Sequel in the credits. A damn fine scene though, love that movie.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Um dude, Dale Keown is awesome. YOu can call the Pitt poorly written, but that doesn't mean Dale sucks. In fact, most Hulk fans consider the period where he was on the book as the high point of Peter David's run on Hulk.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You know what this video needed?

    BALLSACK!

I'm sorry, but now it feels wrong to have a "Search for Spock" review and not have Ballsack in it. If you are not letting Doug co-review, the least you could do is put Ballsack in it.

Also, I was wondering "why is Lord Vyce still evil if the Entity was destroyed?"...and I got my answer.

So, does this mean Mechakara is gone for good? Or at least, until someone rebuilds him?

Come to think of it, what happened to Red Lantern Ultimate Warrior and the Guardian? Where did they go? Nobody took care of them! Hmmm....

    ReplyDelete
  51. The ending made this story-line episode particularly enjoyable. While I did find it, and previous episodes, to be a tad 'talky' at times in terms of dialogue, the way that this wrapped up was very well done. A bit hard to explain, but for me, it had a very 'classic' feel to it.

    I couldn't help but laugh. Just...yeah.

    Well done, good sir.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I was almost expecting a "I'm selling these fine leather jacket" line as a distraction to the enemy.

Loved the big damn hero moment in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  53. So is this the Storyline that will lead into the 4th Anniversary?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think I can explain that Anonymous

    1. It's because Kirk's jacket in the movie was leather, and Linkara is the captain of Comicron 1, plus it looks badass, considering he's fighting against Vyce

    2. Either Vyce's meddlings with the ship did something with the interior lights, or Lewis forgot to edit in the backgrounds, and unless he wants to fix it up and repost the episode, I'd probably stick with the lighting thing

    ReplyDelete
  55. I guess I got a bone to pick on these story lines, though I do like them. You complain and complain whenever a heroic character openly kills or tried to kill in a comic book with no attempt to find a better way even in mind. Yet this is essentially the sixth or seventh time the Linkara character has done just that. You play the Linkara character straight faced so calling it a parody doesn't suffice. Why doesn't it ever cross Linkara's mind to try to find a better way?

Yes, I myself am a rationalist when it comes to extreme evils, I'm just asking because of the tone your show.

    ReplyDelete
  56. So Lord Vyce is back...didn't see that coming. Also, Pollo should really stop saving you otherwise he'll take over the show. It'll be interesting to see a Pollo with working arms and am still looking forward too seeing his new body.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Love it. Awesome episode, felt like a movie, especially with that music for the ending credits. I can see this one was a pain to edit, it was well worth it I assure you. One of your greatest yet in my opinion. Week after week you never fail to impress me, all that extra work you put into your videos really shows, even above mostly everyone at TGWTG (not to say I don't love them too lol)

I love that your episodes are this length too. It's not padded or anything, in fact I'm sure you had to cut a lot out, its all gripping storyline, insight(you had Christopher Lloyd's character perfect), or hilarity.

Fantastic review, easily 6 out of 5 stars. I can't wait to see what else you have up your sleeve.

I don't like the leather jacket btw :p well.. it's not that bad, I just like the old one better :D

  59. 1) Youngblood review: hilarious and great.

    2) zOMG the leather jacket and all of my laughter.

    3) Search for Spock: LONGEST COLD OPEN EVER. But it was awesome.

    4) Background going black randomly? Why? Eh, whatever.

    5) I'm not sure I'll be able to wait until September for a Red Hood and the Outlaws review, either.

    6) When Lord Vyce was floating out in space, I half expected Legendary Frog's version of Lord Sauron to float by in a starchild bubble.

To sum up, this double feature was par for the course in what might be the most awesome Monday I've lived through.

  60. Young Bloods #4
Wow this comic is getting really bad! That ending bit with the current story picking up in another comic is something that really pisses me off about the 90s Image comics! I was a huge Spawn fan back then and nothing pissed me off more was when a story ended the character was perfectly healthy and doing nothing major but the next one picks up with them half beaten to death with a caption box in a corner somewhere saying if you want to know what happened read this book and these books and find out!
You know that Captain America bit there reminded me of a few comics i'm curious if you own or read or heard of!? Agent America(another Liefeld character) and The Fighting American(actually created by Jack Kirby) that Liefeld bought the rights to so she could have a Captain America style character in his book and NOT be sued! But, he was sued anyway because he gave the character a shield... and that led to basically an agreement that the he could use that character as long as he never threw his shield like Capt!! Would you be willing to review those!?
Ok, from what I gather the writers of this comic couldn't keep or tell aliens, future people, cyborgs, and old super-soldiers apart!?

Ok I get that Shaft is suppose to be like Arsenal from Teen Titans, Badrock is like The Thing, Die Hard is Capt. America(with some Deadpool suit design thrown in), bbut who all are the reast suppose to be stole characters of!? Also the Iron Man guy!

Also, beside Watchmen you forgot Mysterymen!

So, Vyce is a robot this whole time!? I thought the be reveal with him would be he's an alternate reality version of yourself?
I like the fact that Harvey's character is using a normal gun!

  62. Linkara you are one of the most finest comic reviewer out there, and yet you can make a funny / entertaining show of too.

Have you seen Star Trek 2009? And did you read the prequel comic?

  63. "Loved it. Nice ending to this storyline, though I don't understand how this ties into the bonus ending for Suburban Knights on the DVD."

My exact words were - "it will all make sense" at the end. I didn't say anything about it tying into that. ^_~

    ReplyDelete
  64. I can barely believe you had time to do all this! Excellent!
I was pleasantly surprised we'd get to meet another past villain again. I much prefer the idea of a rogues gallery, to the DBZ bigger and bigger/join the team.
As of now, I think you have the strongest storylines of anyone in the family, by now far surpassing your comics (also I would like to have them back at some point).

    ReplyDelete
  65. "So now the question is, will you be doing a review of Star Trek 4 (if there is a comic book adaptation) and what will we be expecting in terms of story line stuff?"

I'll be getting to Star Trek IV later this year, but there won't be any storylines for it. XD There are comic adaptations of every movie through First Contact (no adaptations of Insurrection and Nemesis, what a shocker).

    ReplyDelete
  66. "And did I get it right? Pollo tried to contact Linkara? Somehow I did not see that."

I fear I only included one shot in the show proper, but in the Top 15 Personal Favorites video, you can see the Tom Servo's head looking at him and in any cameo I've done over the last two months I've done it in front of that area with Tom Servo looking in either direction.

  67. Star Trek 3 Search for Spock Comic
I actually like how this story arc turned out! The whole Vyce as Pollo instead of Mechakara and Pollo's mind being in a Tom Servo toy puppet!

I think you got a continuity error or unfinished effects because your back ground goes from pitch black to your basic ship haul wall design between scenes!?

I'm surprised the Critic didn't mention or make fun of that worm choking/crushing scene! Hell i can even hear him making a tentacle hentia joke!

I always thought why people didn't take the villain seriously was the fact he was being played by Christopher Lloyd! A guy best known for lighter more comedic roles!

I would think the death of his only (acknowledged) child would've been more devastating than that but... ok!?

On that DVD you got with all these comics on it does it got all the movie adapts up to a point!? Like up to like Generations?

I still want a review of that big crossover event that had Zombies appearing in the Star Trek comic universe!

Ok, I've forgotten and am far, far too lazy to go back and look it up but what happened in that comic that was mint as a sequel to the 2nd movie that was contradicting what did happen in the movies afterward?! You know what I'm asking?

Why does Vyce's final line make me think he's going to say, "Next time, Gadget! NEEEXT TIIIME!!!" (Cat screeches)

  68. "Also, I know this is also off topic, but I have gotten into the Monthly Big Finish Doctor Who audio dramas and I wanted to know if you had any recommendations. I have the Sirens of Time, Omega, and Project: Twilight, all I like. What else do you recommend?"

The eighth Doctor stuff is fantastic, starting with "Storm Warning." There are several good ones in there, but probably the best is "The Chimes of Midnight." Some other good ones include "The Apocalypse Element," "Jubilee," and several more that I can't remember off the top of my head.

  69. I know you dislike Red hood and the outlaws...but honestly...From my view The book is good...Sure the whole Star fire being well..yeah was bad...but since the first issue she hasn't really been that way... I mean it's one of my favorite books to be honest.

  70. "At the part where you, Harvey, and Linksano get on the ship, you're wielding a generic laser thingy..."

Actually it's a phaser from Star Trek III. XD And don't worry, the magic gun will be having a big comeback in the next storyline... in two months, since I need a break from storylines. XD

  71. Wonderful! I liked the solution to 'where the heck did Pollo go' bit. I forgot entirely about the other robot chassis you have just, you know, hanging out.

I do have to admit, I'm a little bummed it wasn't Mechakara's return. Lord Vice is cool and all, but Mechakara's past with an alternate Linkara makes any confrontation seem much more personal and, therefore, dangerous. Lord Vice has interesting motivations, yes, but he doesn't seem as dangerous.

I do like any time you whip out the fake blood, though. Good work! I hope you got plenty of sleep, thirty hours awake is NOT FUN.

Yeppers. I figured it'd make a good minor reference to the movie.

  73. "Also, with how things played it, it makes me wonder if Vyce and/or the Entity will make a comeback. I kinda hope not. This doesn't really seem like the type of show that needs recurring enemies."

Well, I'm happy to report that the next storyline will have a new, original villain (and it won't even be played by me!)

    ReplyDelete
  74. PS: So, Vyce is Hank Henshaw isn't he?

  75. "You're saying a lot of your fans, fans of a guy reviewing comic books, aren't COMIC BOOK FANS? That's a pretty big assumption there. That's like saying fans of The Simpsons aren't really big on the color yellow."

Oh, it's not an assumption at all. I've gotten TONS of e-mails, comments, and even meeting people in person who freely admit they love the show despite not being comic book fans.

    ReplyDelete
  76. "About the decompression bit, is there a story reason why you wern't being pulled off the floor? Like some kind of magnetic device, or was it just an inability to do the practical effect of you being pulled off the ground while holding on?"

Pretty much couldn't do the effect, so the best explanation I can give you is that Linkara was holding onto the metal grating of the ship's floor. I tried to substitute it as best as I could with the dust flying around.

    ReplyDelete
  77. "I guess I got a bone to pick on these story lines, though I do like them.

Yes, I myself am a rationalist when it comes to extreme evils, I'm just asking because of the tone your show."

Well, I don't like it when a superhero kills, I think it's wrong, but it doesn't REALLY ruin a character or book for me (unless they're doing it really maliciously or something). The Linkara character is a bit more pragmatic and practical about his circumstances. He'll most likely kill in self-defense, and bear in mind it looked like he was willing to let Mechakara surrender and then exile him like he had with Vyce. Hell, he would have been willing to exile Vyce yet again (though stripping down the body a bit so he couldn't use any of its tech to escape), it's just circumstances make it more difficult, especially with someone like Vyce who has shown the ability to circumvent security precautions on the ship and gain control of it.

But I had to grab his solo effort. And it's good to see Damian as a good and healthy buffed out teenager. Now I know my history of comics is limited to...October, but I do believe Damian is/was a preteen. So...yeah. correct me if I'm wrong in that.

  81. I worry what I'm going to say may sound negative so let me preface it with the statement that I loved these videos. However I have different feedback:
    1. This was the first time that the Youngblood segment was better than the 'Surprise' segment but this may well be because after the critic's start trek month I am pretty much sick of hearing about a franchise I despise (sorry, but the Insurrection crossover was cool at least) unlike the last two years where Doctor Who and Power rangers made to reveiw interesting and the tone of the video interesting, for me.
    2. I know a lot of people are saying this was anticlimactic I think its more that you made the setup to GOOD for a 'no one could survive that' ending the reavl of vyce was perfect and at he beginning I was pleased to see the shades back and the Character pieces were supperb, this was like an RTD 3 parter great setup and character, but people are alwasy going to whine about the conclusion.
    3. Also there's a bad habbit in both the trek comics in this ark, don't have the storyline segments be out and out copies of the story you are reviewing it makes it predictable, and say what you want about the previous arks predictability was never something to be leveled at them.
4.You know what? this ark kind of is like how trek 3 compares to its predessor, its not bad, it's adequate but compared to the previous major arks it just seems kind of the weakest. That the 'weakest' is still at the worst adequate is a testiment to just how good your stories are.

I'm sorry but ever since the running gag in my head that you get fatter every review it was sort of funny for a while....

but when Harvey Finevoice looks like he's undoing his coat because he's too big to fit in it you really should just work out if only so he looks like it fits again.

maybe set a goal to look good in that green ranger suit and see how far you can get. Hell how you looked in the first video review may be a good goal too.

  85. A lot of those extra scenes in the Star Trek III comic: Kruge's moping on his bridge, the "cloaking device has been destroyed," line, Kirk and Bones' encounter in the turbolift, all that actually shows up in the Star Trek III novelization. It makes me wonder if both the novel and the comic were based off an earlier draft of the script.

This movie also has a few quirks regarding the Klingons that aren't seen again. For one, the bird of prey bridge has an oval shaped-door, whereas all the later doors on Klingon shapes will be wedge-shaped. Also, Kruge is addressed as "my lord," a title you never see used on Klingons again.

Even though the Klingons are definitely militaristic, they haven't gone to the "space Viking" image yet. Actually, if you look at Star Trek VI, the contrast between those Klingons and the TNG era is even more striking.

You are doing all that right, what you said, that Identity Crisis made wrong – you planted little hints here and there, so that the viewer can come back and watch those clues, when he has an Idea, what is happening there and where to look at.
But that really takes time to prepare all those things. Again – I salute you.

By the way, what kind of an accent is it, you use as Harvey Finevoice?

Rob once again on a classic Image character, a real chance of re-living my childhood!

Also, do you intend to review the Youngblood issues that Rob co-wrote with Alan Moore?
Apparently they spent half the time bickering, but the result is a rather unique experience for the curious comic reader

And also, if you'd like to see a really awesome take on the "superheroes as celebrities" concept, you should check the anime "Tiger and Bunny"

Not only is it an awesome superhero series, but it also satirizes and deconstructs the American comic-book industry

And I want to thank you for inspiring me on several fronts. First: Starting Starman (Omnibus 2 just came in today) and actually watching The Wrath of Khan and starting TNG.

I noticed in the comments a question regarding the Doctor Who audio dramas. (I have the Eighth Doctor Collection vol 1) I have one on my amazon wish list, "The Time of the Daleks" and was wondering if it is worth purchasing.

Is Lord Vice being in denial, or does he know something you don't?

Plus, Red Hood and the Outlaws seriously gets more hate than it deserves
As someone who actually stuck past the first issue, I have to say it's a pretty enjoyable ride, with some nice character moments for Jason Todd and Roy Harper, and in the most recent issue we are getting some insight into Starfire as well
Most of the complainers seem to have only read the first issue, seeing as they only complain about Starfire being sexualized, which didn't occur beyond the first issue, but don't mention the flashback of her while enslaved, brutally beating up a guy for pitting her - one would expect the complainers to jump on this one, but I haven't seen one of them mentioning it yet, which kinda confirms my theory of them never going past issue 1

Remember what you said in your Top 15 Worst Heroes Becoming Villains video about him mishandling the Scarlet Witch? Yeah guess who Marvel to write for that character again?

I'll look into this anime and manga if there is one... there normally is! The Pepsi bit in that opening was funny!
The part about "What if superheroes were the employees of large companies" does remind me a lot more of The Boys(a comic Lewis has admitted to hating) and Marshal Law(a comic I'm not too sure if many people remember). Both of those for the most part are about corporations that use them as mascots and basically weapons! They also treat them like they do the characters in their books. Most noticeably in The Boys when they force costume changes mostly on female characters. But the part like like in both if a "hero" is killed they're normally "brought back to life" but the companies just hiring a look-a-like or promoting another "hero" that just kind of looks like the old guy!
Also, I mention before a good exsample was the Mystery Men movie! I'm one of the few that actually liked that movie and the short lived live action Tick TV series!

  96. There's only one thing I don't understand. How did Lord Vyce transform himself into living data? Is it like when Polly transferred his A.I. conciousness into the Tom Servo robot?

P.S. I still need to try out MST3K but I don't know where to start. :(

  97. The thing about Kurge is that's he's right. The Genesis would have allowed the federation to conquer the Klingons. Just not in the way everyone thinks they would.

There's a reason that space exploration and colonization are seen as important. Its said that there comes a point where a civilization's needs will out-way its resources. You can invent ways of conservation, but that only slows down the process.

    Those spaceships aren't cheap either.

And despite space being really REALLY big, the number of inhospitable planets outnumbers hospitable ones by untold millions (or billions). So "prime real estate" is important to get resources the civilization needs.

What Genesis essentially did was make everything cheap. Any planet could have been terraformed into a new livable world. And the Federation would probably have a say in who would get to go to those new cheap planets, and what they could be used for.

They could devote whole worlds to the production of food, medicine, machinery, etc. Planets close to dangerous zones could be heavily fortified essentially making them giant military bases. The Klingons might have woken up one day to find their space surrounded by a well supplied, Federation that had grown exponentially large.

That's what Kurge's quote about living under a Federation flag sounded like to me. Not that the Federation would have used Genesis as a weapon and attacked the Klingon home world, but essentially crowded them out OF SPACE!

But what do I know, I'm just an anonymous poster with a theory.

  100. Whenever Nimue says, "Information:" I keep flashing back to The Host from Doctor Who's "Voyage of the Damned" and KotOR's HK-47 and probably other droids.

Love the Indy Jacket, by the way, although it does reflect your lighting a bit in some shots, but that can't be helped really.

Glad you're leaving it open for Vyce to come back rather than killing him off. Although because he's in the tiny body, he's a lot less threatening. It's kind of like when a Dalek said, "Would you care for some tea?" in Doctor Who Season 5; I can't take them seriously after that because that's all I hear. I just end up snickering at them.

Also, when you overlapped Linksano and Finevoice, it looked a little weird; I think they looked too close together to me. However, those kinds of shots are really complex, so kudos to you for a job well done.

Also, I noticed this earlier in your review of Power Rangers Dino Thunder with your analysis of Tommy's character. When giving your analysis of a situation or character, NEVER say you might wrong. It is your interpretation and you need to stick by it. Instead of saying, "I might be wrong" you can say, "This is just one interpretation of the scene/character". Stick to your argument; they're interesting and intriguing. More than one person can be right when it comes to analyzing literature, comics, film, etc.

I always look forward to your reviews and your stories.

  101. Storywise, I actually like this review more then the entity one, which was one of my favs.

then again, this one was longer...

    ReplyDelete
  102. Two reviews at once, and right after a crossover? You spoil us, sir!

Storyline: Okay, first thing’s first. That was one hell of a teaser, short simple, very dark and drew my attention. Exactly what they need to be and it kept me wanting to see what would happen later on when the characters went onto the ship to investigate.
The sudden plot twist at the end was also well delivered, it certainly surprised me for a number of reasons. The first being that due to its elaborate design and detailed look, I thought we’d only see Vyce in full form again. Combined with the buildup towards it being the final showdown against Mechakara, it reminded me a lot of another effective plot twist from the Justice League cartoon.

The only criticism I’d give is that it did seem somewhat obvious that Pollo would turn up in the Tom Servo prop. I didn’t notice the head moving in any previous episodes but the second it was gone in that shot of the first episode I just thought “right, he’s going to show up in that.”
Still, that’s only a minor thing and I enjoyed the storyline for being unobtrusive to the reviews while being well detailed and thought out.

Reviews: Youngblood is always a goldmine for references so no real criticisms positive or negative there. The only small one I have is I didn’t quite understand the direction you were coming from with the Ultimate Warrior and Return of the Jedi comparisons.
The only surprising bit was you didn’t comment upon where the female character in Youngblood, sorry I don’t know her name, was looking in the Diehard’s Junk page.

As for search for Spock – pretty good. It’s nice to see an adaptation getting some good comments for once and I did enjoy the fact you focused on something new with a subject which has been so heavily criticized and analysed by others lately.

One question though - Is NIMUE’s habit for saying “Information” prior to announcements a tip of the hat to Zen and Slave from Blake’s 7?

    ReplyDelete
  103. To be fair, the character Linkara doesn't actually know that much about what the planets were like before Vyce. It's entirely possible that he left them in much better shape than they were previously and he doesn't seem to have any interest in worlds that don't have the Entity on them.

Also, it is rather reasonable to assume that the Entity is still alive. Between believing that a guy who barely beat you went on to kill a physical god* or that it was a ruse I know which I would believe.

In any case I will admit it was a good switch between Mechakara and Vyce.

*And I don't think that Linkara ever told Vyce that the Entity was convinced to kill itself, so it would sound even less likely.

  106. The "Crash Tunnel" being a ripoff of the Boom Tube has already been commented on before, but I wanted to mention about another aspect in the Youngblood comic.

The scene where Die-Hard is knocked back with the blood flying would have elicited a different reaction from me. I took it in line with other things he's done--hits somebody with his crotch and holds himself inapproriately in this issue--and get the idea that he's just a big pervert and that scene reminded me in manga and anime how people will get nosebleeds when turned on. Die-Hard just finds Darkthornn too sexy and is knocked back by the force of the nosebleed.

And I own this comic. It really does suck. Heck, I also own Prophet #1 and I still don't have a good idea who Prophet is or how to differentiate him from all the other gritted-teeth Liefeld characters. He certainly doesn't seem like a capable fighter, that's for sure. And since Liefeld is all about fighting, that's not good.

Still, since the videos always take so long to load (my computer really hates Blip), I was stuck on the Die-Hard crotch scene in your opening and got to thinking. If you look long enough, it actually looks like he's double-uppercutting the guy. You know, if you try to rationalize intention over presentation.

  107. "Well, I'm happy to report that the next storyline will have a new, original villain (and it won't even be played by me!)"

What about Will? Or would that be also kind of redundant since he's Vyce? Still, I'm looking forward to a new villain, although it's nice that your show embraces that it's about comic books and always gives villains the opportunity to came back. If Vyce does end up coming back a second time, I'm curious how that works.

  108. "Actually, it probably isn't. One of the features of the Bird of Prey is that its wings can go up and down."

cool fact about the wings but linkara the two big round bumps on the top of bird of prey are on the bottom instead of the top where they should be thus making me think the artist goofed.

  109. ok I liked this story arc alot but I have a few questions

why did vyce say he was stuck on that planet for three years?
I mean he was just exiled there over a year ago.
so did time move faster on his planet?

If vyce felt that sending a distress single would take too long but transporting himself digitally did not as long why?

was vyce talking about other cosmic threats that he had destroyed in other realities a referance to stuff like apollo z's nerdpocolips?

will we ever visit a other realities
perhaps one that vyce had conquered?
as I think it would be cool to see vyce'verse versions of you, spoony, and doug.

thank you for taking the time to read these posts.

  112. Youngblood 4:

It seems everytime we see more of the infamous Youngblood, it looks more terrible. You know, there are writers who can do dark and edgy -- Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Mark Waid, Neil Gaiman, Mark Millar, Warren Ellis, Geoff Johns, Todd MacFarlane, Robert Kirkman, and everyone who has worked at Vertigo Comics. Rob Liefeld is not dark and edgy -- he's just a moron who thinks to be dark and edgy means you have to be scowling and extremely violent. How is it possible that he keeps getting work at DC Comics and Image Comics? It's bad enough Hawk and Dove were suffering from Youngblood's Disease -- now he has infected Grifter, Hawkman, and Deathstroke? We've got to find ways to stop him!

Anyway, nice beatdown. The surprise ending where Lord Vyce is back was not what I saw coming.

    Star Trek 3 Special:

Pollo returning, I saw coming a while back and it's good to see the robot back again. I eagerly await Pollo's new body.

Also, great review on this comic adaptation of this underrated film. The storyline bits at the beginning and end are reminiscent of actual scenes from Star Trek 3.

I wonder how long will it be before Lord Vyce returns for revenge against you -- I mean, the maniac can't accept the fact that his hated for, the Entity/MissingNo, is actually dead (I could be wrong. . . ) I think Vyce is obsessed with you for defeating him. You might want to prepare for round 3? or is it round 4?

Anyway, can't wait to see Mechakara return for real -- and whatever new storyline you've got planned.

  113. Hey Linkara, this is slightly random (but on the topic of Star Trek) did you hear about the Doctor Who/Star Trek cross-over comic?

  114. I just realized something. Linkara's insurance to keep Linksano from double crossing him was the threat of NIMUE imedeatly teleporting him to the world Vyse was exiled to. Now that Vyse isn't there anymore, Liksano doesn't have as much to lose. Could our hero be in store for a double cross?

  116. How come only some people showed up to stop Mechakara, I mean, it's Mechakara. Sure it was really Lord Vyce, but that's outside the point.

  117. Have you ever thought of doing storylines that mainly focus on some of your other side characters. I would love the crap out of a Finevoice focused story arc.

Also, feature Buffo more on your show, I want to know more about him.

  118. Is the villain of the next storyline going to be another serious character, because I'm starting to get sick of those. Don't get me wrong, I love Vyce and Mechakara, but if you keep doing the same personality over and over, its going to get repeditive

Like Linksano I wonder who teleported earlier off the ship. Also,I'm suprise by the revelation of who/what is controlling the robot body.Vyce either knows something about the entity that Linkara doesn't know or Vyce's ego and pride is bigger than Comiccron and he can't acknowledge that a mere human can make a cthulu level God go boom. Go Pollo! and nice jacket Linkara.

  125. It's sad to see how a single ill-conceived issue can damage the reputation of an awesome series

Red Hood and the Outsiders is probably one of the most enjoyable titles out there at the moment, but people aren't willing to give it a chance to to a bunch of naggers constantly bitching about that one issue
The rest of the series meanwhile continues being awesome

Glad the series quality was enough to keep it afloat despite the weight of public opinion, and rescued it from cancellation
It would be a terrible loss otherwise (the first time in YEARS Jason Todd's been written correctly)

Be sure to read the author comments too.

I couldn't help but think of AT4W when they posted it. :)

Also, you did really great on these two reviews and I really enjoyed the whole 'His Blue Soul' story line. I especially liked how you finished it with a review of "The Search for Spock" but I guess that's only fitting. :)

  129. If I remember, Strikeforce: Morituri (Marvel comics) also covered the aspect celebrity superheores and that was in the late 80's (1986-1989). While it was more of a backdrop plot thread, the heroes were highly publicized, got their own comics series, a soap opera based on their exploits and one even had a romantic relationship with a popular actor.

While I've only read the really early issues, it did a good job with the subject. You'd probably like it, Linkara (I suggest issue 4).

    ReplyDelete
  130. The exposition dumps, such as Vice's lengthy description of how he escaped, slowed the momentum of the story even if they did show you thought of the details.

    ReplyDelete
  131. So if Lord Vyce is now living data, does that mean he will return around the the conclusion of Miller Time: Robo-cop vs Terminator?

    ReplyDelete
  132. To provide exposition is a difficult task in a story. And hence, exposition dumps can be necessary. I have the same problem right now in Chapter 21.1 of my fanfic...

plus, some times, major cases of writers block.

Linkara, how do you cope with that? I mean, with writers block? For an artist, who makes a living out of that, I can imagine, it is twice as hard. What do you do, when writers block says "Oh, hello, its me again, long time no see?"

  134. You really should give Red Hood another chance. It's actually been pretty solid so far.

And, since I don't have a Twitter account and don't want to make one, I'll say this here: I as a big fan of the last Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle series... really LIKE this current one. Jaime in the Beetle suit hitting Brenda is actually understandable in the context of the issue since Jaime had to prove to the red Scarab (who was using Paco as a host) that the blue Scarab would be able to continue it's goal for the Reach. Jaime hit Brenda so Paco would be released from the red Scarab's control. Jaime wouldn't hurt his friends without purpose and he's been so freaked out by the whole thing, he's running away to keep them from the mess.

"We're leaving, bugsuit. We have to go AWAY."
    "Go where?"
"Far enough that the people I love will be SAFE."

Is it the same as the last series? No. Could I honestly say that if someone who liked the closeness the people in the last series had should read this new one? Not really, but I was sure you had more of an open mind. I kinda miss the old status quo from before the relaunch, but I do respect the book for going in a different direction, doing it's old thing. If it'd just be a rehash of the old stuff, it'd be like watching a shot-for-shot remake of "Psycho"... and we all know how THAT turned out.

    ReplyDelete
  135. "Jaime hit Brenda so Paco would be released from the red Scarab's control. Jaime wouldn't hurt his friends without purpose and he's been so freaked out by the whole thing, he's running away to keep them from the mess.

"We're leaving, bugsuit. We have to go AWAY."
    "Go where?"
"Far enough that the people I love will be SAFE.""

While I applaud that Jaime wants to run away after doing something like that... no. Just no. This is not a good story direction - it's more paranoia of superheroes nonsense, mixed in with an act that he would never in a million years do without consulting them first. He cares about Brenda too damn much to ever risk hurting her, either emotionally in putting a gun to her head after the hitting, or the physical hitting itself. He would be ripping the suit from his skin with his last breath to keep that from happening, because that is who Jaime Reyes is.

They explored the angle of the scarab going evil in the back-up stories. It was an interesting take on it... but not as good as when they're allies and friends. The scarab was developing its own personality, independence, and whatnot. I don't want to read a story about a kid struggling with an evil alien suit and trying to keep it a secret from his friends and loved ones. THAT is a clichéd story. You know what wasn't? A teenage kid trying to be a superhero while balancing his real life AND having friends and family who all knew about it and that it allowed them to better grow together and show how much they all truly loved one another and allowed their characters to grow.

If you like it, fine, but I find this book to be aggravating, exhausting, and just... not fun. One of the main reasons I loved the original series was because it was just damn fun, but to me there is nothing like that to be found here and I will actively discourage people away from it as a result.

  136. Wait a minute... Fridge Logic just set in. Why did Vyce try to blow up the earth by crashing his ship into it in the Wrath of Khan review? If it had been Mechakara, that would've made sense, but with Vyce it just... doesn't.

He wasn't. He was trying to gain control of other parts of the ship and created the engine imbalance to force Nimue to relinquish security lockouts on other areas. As she said, when the safety of the ship is in danger, she's programmed to disregard security protocols.

  138. Hey, don't be disprecting Rob Liefeld. It takes hard work and dedication to not improve the slightest bit after twenty years in the industry.

I have to say that Lord Vyce was a bit... chatty... but seeing Tom Servo arrive to kick butt was AWESOME. Also, the bit at the end with Pollo reviewing Red Hood and the Outlaws was hilarious, and I don't generally like the storylines.

P.S. Thank you for including so many MST3K clips in your shows over the years. Those clips finally convinced me to track down some episodes and I am so unbelievably happy that I did. MST3K rocks and so do you.

  140. "We live in a strange, strange world." Amen to that.

Darkthong? I want to see that as a villain in a parody now. That sounds amazing.

Wait... that kid with the hockey stick... the blond with the red and black striped shirt... I am so glad that he didn't have a stuffed tiger with him.

HOMG Vyce! I was expecting to see him again, but not like that. Honestly I was a little disappointed that he didn't become an ally when MissingNo finally revealed himself, but this is more complex and interesting.

One would think Vyce would have interrupted earlier in the self-destruct-sequence process. Y'know, laser-strike Finevoice or Linkara to keep them from finishing the codes. I suppose he's contractually obligated as a villain to not interrupt that sort of thing, though, just like with transformation sequences.

OH GAWD THE DOORS. I'm sorry, I know it would have circumvented the review, but it's a pet peeve of mine when spaceships can't be navigated without power. Manual override! Jefferies tubes! One should be able to get places to fix things if your ship loses power. D:

Your Sulu voice is awesome. I love Sulu's voice. And nice play on the costume changes.

Also, hooray Pollo! :D Can't wait to see the new body.

I do have to say I was disappointed about the decompression scene. I suppose it's not easy to look like you're a moment away from being sucked out into space, though. Maybe hook something to a wall, hang off that, and then alter it later to look like you're hanging off the floor? Admittedly I know little about effects, so I'll shut up now...

Also, an Anon mentioned side-character storylines, and I have to second that. I love 'Lower Deck' and 'Day in the Limelight' episodes, and all of your side-characters are really interesting. (I'm partial to Linksano, myself, but we already know more about him than pretty much anybody else.)

The captcha asks that I prove I'm not a robot. Are they discriminating against robots? Is Pollo not allowed to comment?

  142. From what I've heard, Rob Liefeld makes for an awesome companion, and bursts with enthusiasm for his work. So I can imagine companies hiring him just as an excuse to have him around.
Plus, I can see some appeal in his work.
    Best way to describe it:
If Grant Morrison is made of awesome and win, Rob Liefeld is made of MANLY! With only REAL MEN being being able to appreciate his work (which is why comic fans hate him)

Love you'r in-depth character analysis of Kruge. Always love it when people take their time explaining such underrated or misinterpreted characters.
It's kinda proving my point that the majority is almost never right when these things are concerned.

The "to survive, we must destroy" line something like the humans in the Warhammer franchise would say In that setting, humans are convinced that the universe is rightfully theirs, and that the other species are just infesting their property, therefore needing to be punished for their crime of living
Best part? Humans are the designated protagonists of the franchise.
At least in the older editions (1st to 4th edition) the franchise was largely morally ambiguous, with each race having their moral ups and downs, and having an equal share of heroism and savagery.
But since the hack that is Matt Ward started writing the 5th edition, humans are suddenly perfect and infailable in every single way, and completely in the right in their genocide of all non-human species in the universe (despite the previous editions clearly having this as a negative trait)
    http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Matthew_Ward
    but I digress

I would recommend you to give Red Hood and the Outlaws a second chance tho. Especially issue 6, which is basically a prequel (taking place before issue 1), and therefore the true beginning.
If you were complaining about how Starfire was depicted in the first issue, you should at least check this one out, as here she's basically the main focus, and receives a more in-depth characterization as well as explanation for her actions throughout the series.
On another note, remember the shitstorms the readers (and you) unleashed uppon the series for the supposed "objectification" of Starfire?
Well, that is NOTHING compared to what Jason Todd goes through in this issue (he spends the vast majority of the issue running around completely naked), yet nobody seems to even care.

yeah, comic fans are a bunch of filthy hypocrites
