First of your reviews where I actually tried to do some background research before the episode aired. I think I chose the wrong week to start doing that.
I liked the episode, though I have to note that you paid little attention to the name. Black Web is okay for a title, but its use in the comic is rather atrocious.
That was a good review, interesting, that you can put yourself in the shoes of the artistic team, and, I really understand you. I just had a look at my first fanfics, I wrote… Oh BOY. I doubt, that I am much better now, but those first tries were really, really bad.
But to the story of Blackweb No.1 – doesn’t it remind you of a mixture of spiderman, Batman and “the incredible hulk”? That guy, who looked like Harvey Bullock, reminds me of – what was the reporters name again? Jake McGee? Jack McGee? It was not Tim McGee, because, he works for NCIS. And didn’t they say, that the Hulk killed Banner? And furthermore: David Banner – D.B. – the initials of our Hero…
It's OK Lewis, confusing the Frankenstein monster with the name of the doctor has been a common mask since the release of Universal's Frankenstein in 1931. Since the monster was never given a name in both the novel and movies, I say just give him a proper name to help avoid the confusion. Me, I like calling him Frankie. It's a friendly name. For a monstrous name, I don't know!
The homeless guy doesn't really look like he is black, I'd say more of a grayish tone from living out on the street.
Also, just a suggestion, but have you thought of using Commissioner Gordon's line "Clever...Devilishly Clever!" from "Batman: The Movie". Just looking to keep the word diversified in its usage on the show.
"Wait, how did that punch scene work? You seemed to notice when it cut to a different camera angle. If it's to hide something then doesn't the regular shot do that fine already? And if it's from the perspective of the next villain, it just doesn't make sense for you to see it and know what it is."
The pullback was of the camera. The camera that was recording me from the other angle a moment ago.
Hilarious review and I also sometimes fell sorry for people who write horrible stories when they are young like some of your early work, though I thought your drawing was not that bad
Was the spider-man story that is often confused with the others, Spider-Man Disassembled which introduced The Queen. It was probably the worst spider-man story I have read, and definitely deserves to be on this show (one reason I do not hate One More Day as much as a lot of people is that it removed that story from continuity). Also the reason I recall them giving for the stingers was that he was subconsciously jealous of wolverine.
That was a very impressive redub of the "old Klingon proverb" scene, especially considering only one word (well, technically two words) was(were) changed. How did you do it?
So venom (the stuff that makes Bane super strong) gets injected into a guy to make him a combination of: Spider-man wall crawling, Wolverine Claws, original at night transformation circumstances of the Hulk, and goo on the body like Venom. Which all come from a single spider.
Of course don't you know anything about science.
By the way, what was that other Spider-man Comic that you said would be on the show someday?
That Spidey story was one that was arbitrarily tied to Avengers Disassembled, if only because Captain America made guest appearances. (Also, what is it with Captain America always palling around with Spider-Man?)
I liked the old Lightbringer ): However, I'm around the age you were when you started, and the quality has definitely improved with time and illustrators.
I know exactly what it is like to have old stories that you are not proud of...got quite a few on the web myself, but I keep trying to improve and make each one better than the last. Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up. If I didn't let out all the bad stories, then I wouldn't be able to know how to get better for the future. I am curious about your comic series, but I am slightly hesitant to go and look at it if you are self-conscious about it. I wouldn't exactly want people to look at my earlier things either, so without your say-so I think I'll hold off. Alternatively, is there a certain point in the comic that you would suggest reading from while still retaining vital plot and character information?
Anyways, I am looking forward to your upcoming works. Keep up the excellent job!
About the impossibly fast newspaper headline, I'm reminded of the milk carton you mocked in "All Star Batman", as well as the "Twilight Zone" episode "Printer's Devil".
About the latter, it featured Burgess Meredith as a mysterious man (turns out he's Satan) who saves a dying newspaper by giving it scoops about disasters before any other paper can get them. Turns out he CAUSES the disasters by typing them into a machine that makes his words real.
While I imagine the newspaper in Black Web was merely the product of bad writing, I for one think it's cooler if Burgess Meredith is responsible for the impossibly fast headline.
Odd thing to notice, but didn't Linkara walk the other way at the end? Usually he walks to our right, but this time he walks to our left. Anything's a clue these days. :)
*Sniffs* Sorry, but that scene with all the needles... my uncle went the same way, death by needles being forced into the skin by an explosion and all hitting him regardless of where they were positioned before the explosion.
OK, in all seriousness, totally digging Linksao's new role. The Continuity Alarm should watch its back, maybe he'll finagle his way into doing that job too...
That is the one. The three Disassembled stories Spider-Man, Avengers, and Fantastic Four all came out around the same time but were supposed to be connected by theme not storyline. They were all attacked emotionally as well as physically leaving them all a mental wreck. Some worked better then other’s Avengers not that bad Fantastic Four was average and Spider-Man was horrible.
Oh dear, old shames. I am so thankful that I avoided the Internet when I was young, so that the worst thing I have floating around in public is a short story for a middle-school literary magazine. And my short attention span subverted so many more bad decisions...
I had to pause the video after the 'I am a MAN'-punch just to come and comment on how great it was. Highlights just how reality-breaking the punch actually is. (That would be a pretty cool way to intro a new villain, actually.)
I think this is your best video in awhile. Not to say the others were bad, just that this one *really* worked.
Wow this was badly done but I like what of this comic I've seen. It's like one of those if as larger company like IDW or Dark Horse was to buy the rights they could rewrite this into a good comic. The costume design I really like! It reminds me a lot of a design I did for a Spider-Man villain for a contest on DeviantArt http://boorat.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=24#/d3ceptz http://boorat.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=24#/d3bynza Now, I'm sure some one on here has already pointed this out but the bum in the alley wasn't black he looked to be quite white! The main character on the other hand seems to be black... but the art is pretty bad that it's hard to tell his race some times! Ok, the origins here does look a lot like Dark Man's! And, the villain looks a lot like the bad guy from that movie! I've heard of that Spider-Man comic a lot and it's just dumb as Hell! If they wanted to give Spider-Man more powers there's all sorts of comic book tropes they could've done to give him a power boost. Radiation, Toxic Waste, a natural 2nd mutation like they've done with the X-men, ect. I do love the title art art for this episode it does look a lot more painful than the comic's version of it.
"Odd thing to notice, but didn't Linkara walk the other way at the end? Usually he walks to our right, but this time he walks to our left. Anything's a clue these days. :)"
Nah, that one's just that I've flipped the futon around.
Official storyline stuff will begin again roughly around mid-late April.
The new Ultimate Spider-Man also has stingers, although I think they're much smaller in comparison and the only function I've heard is that they inflict paralysis.
I wish Lester B. Bum would show up on the show. He would make a fun addition to the cast, although I think 90's Kid has got the "comic relief" part taken.
I recall a debate on Twitter about the Frankenstein monster's name, and I really don't care what people call him. Linksano saying "He's a fictional character, so we can call him whatever the hell we want" was hilarious.
Right there with you on the cringe-worthy early fanfic. *shudder*
When I saw Angela webbed to the wall, the first thing I thought of was the weird bug cocoon transformation thing with Mohinder Suresh in the second (?) season of "Heroes." I don't know if you've seen it, but it was about as entertaining as Black Web.
Well, that comic wasn't so bad for what it was, I guess, but I can kind of understand why that company went under after only two issues of its first title. It would have been high end for a purely amateur work, done as a hobby by somebody else that had some other source of income. As a serious, presumably professional comic book, however, it wasn't quite polished enough for the open market.
All in all, a good review. It got me to thinking about a lot of interesting things, most of them not about the comic, but worthwhile all the same. Thanks for the great work, Linkara!
I noticed something else weird about when Blackweb chokes out the guard. Not only is Blackweb giving the guy plenty of room to breathe but it looks like the guard's shoulders come up nearly to the top of his head. Also it's pretty funny that Web calls the guy "old" despite him looking the same age as everyone else
Actually the more I think on it the mor this plot rings of the Guyver animes/mangas/movies! Evil company that uses humans that transform into freakishly weird monsters as hitmen and for corporate sabotage! Also I gotta admit I loved the SNL Sean Connery on Jeopardy skit! The funniest bits off that show!
I like old Lightbringer. Your art was getting pretty good before you went to other artists. :) This comic raises so many questions? What does the bad guy want with venom research? Couldn't he have just bought the research from our "hero"? Couldn't the carless guy who laid the bomb have stolen the research? He must have broken into the lab to set the bomb. How does the venom OD give him clothes? (Or is that supposed to be some kind of thin exoskeleton? Ewwww...)
Cool review. PSA month is gonna be hell (sorry, couldn't resist) XD
It's really nice of you to admit your Old Shame instead of just trying to cover them up or ignore them - but in this day in age I think just about everyone whose creative at all has something out there on the Internet that will embarss them if they ever get famous and it gets found.
For a moment I feared you were going to play Neil Diamond's "Heartlight" when you showed killer, gun-toating E.T. Now that is pure hilarious cheese.
I think all this comic proves is that just because you can make a rip-off of Spider-man doesn't mean you should. The whole ordeal just felt bizarre, silly and weird. And...your comment about the "third stinger"...yeah, probably expains what happens when he changes...though somehow I just got this weird Spawn feel from him.
Great review. You know, I understand how you feel about some of your early works, such as Lightbringer, those self-published novels, and of course Web of Dimensions, the one where you're this God mode Sue interacting with Pokemon, Digimon, and Sailor Moon.
I gotta be honest. I've never even heard of this comic, let alone INKS Comics, until you said the title. Even then, there hasn't been any information about this company, except that the book failed and the company failed.
So, what's the next major storyline going to be about?
Another excellent review, but you do bring up a very interesting topic when you talk about past work. With my passion to become an author, I know there are stories I've written that are complete crap. Honestly, no ones story could ever be as bad as my 4th/5th grade book The Forest Devil which involved magic elevators in a backyard, harmonicas that are used to stun demons and a random song about how a character lost their dog...yeah XD But, I always try to look at everything I've done positively so I can see where to improve on. From where I first got a good storyline down, to depicting emotions without dialogue or just explaining them to the reader, I always want to see the best in my past works. Heck, Forest Devil was my first real attempt at a serious story...which my god my challenge in life will be to write a actual serious book out of it instead of well...killing a devil with a football XD Overall, I think there's good things to find in all the works you've created and hell, in my opinion, you've become great at telling stories with what you display on Atop The Fourth Wall. Hope you feel inspired to continue Revolution of the Mask like you did Lightbringer (Though, I can no longer buy the two issues anymore. Wont appear on your link) and I hope you might one day get to read Rated R for I want my first published work to be as great as it can be (Yes, the title is intentionally cheesy XD)
That's a little harsh to call the evolution theory for the Spider-Man "Other" storyline a "stupid explanation" since a) YOU didn't think of anything ... not saying you had to, but you asked people on your twitter what they thought was the explanation for this and many had that answer, and to just harshly dismiss it seems a bit arrogant and b) evolution does have a predetermined course ... Pokemon? Spider-Man evolves into ... I dunno, Spider-Sabers?
It's not like Petey has those awesome abilities anymore anyway, so, who cares? <_<
Wait, I just realized something... you forgot to point out that they forgot the "r" in "control" when Black Web (I've already forgotten the character's actual name... go fig) is going through his first transformation.
That was a clever variation for the "I am a man" joke. Will there be a story line where you learn how to control the "gates" (lack of a better term) that you create from the punch, because I now have an image of you doing the punch to get an item you need to fight a villian. For example, the magic gun gets knocked to the other side of the room and you do the punch to reobtain it. That or use it to teleport.
"That's a little harsh to call the evolution theory for the Spider-Man "Other" storyline a "stupid explanation" since a) YOU didn't think of anything ... not saying you had to, but you asked people on your twitter what they thought was the explanation for this and many had that answer, and to just harshly dismiss it seems a bit arrogant and b) evolution does have a predetermined course ... Pokemon? Spider-Man evolves into ... I dunno, Spider-Sabers?"
After the twitter responses, I was reminded of that explanation in the comics - it's been a while since I read "The Other." It wasn't THEIR theory, it was the theory put forth in the story... and it's a stupid theory.
Also: Pokemon are not a true example of evolution.
So why exactly didn't this psychotic lame mix of Batman and Spiderman just go to the POLICE. There is nothing to suggest that the police couldn't handle it. He could have just given the guy's name and list of contacts to the police and they probably could have handled it with a minimum amount of murder. And apparently Angela is also an idiot. Instead of telling her nutjob coworker to just go to the police she actively encourages him about his criminal activities.
As for the villains, why do they care if the scientists are killed or not? They failed to kill them in the initial bombing, so the scientists clearly had plenty of time to tell someone like, oh I don't know, THE POLICE about the new guy who suddenly disappeared.
I really love the Linksano bits, a hilarious addition, glad he's pulling his weight on the show, I wonder if he's taken over most of Pollo's duties until he gets a proper body...
You know, I think it might actually be a good thing that your early bad stuff is out there for all the world to see - I mean, I know it must be uncomfortable for you (as the author of some low-quality fanfiction, I can empathize), BUT...
Most every creative-type person who's got some experience is unanimous: when you do it for the first time, you'll fail. A lot. But keep it up and you'll get good eventually. Now, it's one thing to hear people say that, but your career as a writer (if you can call something starting with fanfic a "career") actually demonstrates that - it's like "if he used to be 'Web of Dimensions' bad and he got 'Entity storyline' good, then maybe I can..."
I dunno if I'm what I want to here, but I hope I am. You're kind of a success story if what I'm saying.
Wait someone is seriously calling the pokemon evolution thing actual evolution? Yay, I get to use my evolution information rant.
Evolution is probably one of the most misrepresented scientific concepts in fiction, despite it actually being surprisingly simple. First, lets discard the stuff about genes, the origin of life and the influence of the divine on the world. These things matter little, at least for understanding the basis. Instead, we make two assumptions that people can mostly agree on: Animals and/including humans die, there are differences within a species and Children are somewhat like their parents.
Depending on which parts of a species survives, the overall species changes over time. For example, imagine a herd of buffalo. Of these buffalo, a few were born with a shorter neck. When a large flood flooded the valley the buffalo lived in, most buffalo managed to survive. However, those with short necks could not hold their necks above water and drowned. Since the children of the long-necked buffalo are also likely to have long-necked children, the average neck-length of the species has permanently increased.
This is the basis of evolution. It is not about what species is better. Its about what species manages to survive. If the disaster hadn't been a flood, but, say a fire, the buffaloes with a short neck would have the same survival chance as those with a long neck. Instead, the buffaloes with the worst condition would have died (or all of them, depending on the severity of the fire). As you can see, changes in a species are not pre-set. It depends on events in the world itself. Because there is no pre-set path, and there is a degree of randomness, there are no 'evolutionary levels to speak off'.
Now, we've seen how animals with disadvantageousness traits may die off. What we haven't talked about is how these traits came to be in the first place. This comes about through a process known as mutation (nothing to do with the x-men, really). Mutation, more often than not, results in very bad traits, such as being born with no skin (which is why its a bad idea to live in an irradiated area). However, very rarely, a trait can be advantageous, or at least harmless, which means the owner has a chance of surviving long enough to have children who have the same traits.
"Eh Linkara, I dont think JMS deserves to be bashed for One More Day. That story was very obviously editorial mandate just like Sins Past."
Sins Past was his idea to begin with. The only thing editorial changed was that Peter was originally going to be the father of the twins and they struck that down for that stupid "him having children ages the character!" nonsense.
He was completely on board with One More Day, as well. He was just pissed off that when everything got changed around, he had a plan in place to explain exactly what in continuity had been altered and Marvel rejected it, instead stating that "it's magic, we don't have to explain it."
Did Linkara just punched the 4th wall or just knocked over whatever he has been punching at for the "I'm a man joke?. I do like Linksano's new role in the series other than being Mr.Mad scientist.
I actually own a copy of this one. You can say what you want about it, but it is a FUN read. I interpreted the bad guy going from in the shadows to being not in the shadows to meaning he also had some kind of nocturnal transformation going on. It doesn't quite work the way it was done, though.
One thing though, given the fact that JMS got Peter and Mary-Jane back together from their separation, what evidence do yoy have that he supported One More Dat
I can't find a comment here that says this, so I'll just quickly say that I think fire trucks often respond to emergencies other than obvious fires, at least in my town. I say this on the basis that one time two fire trucks and a police car - but no ambulance - came to take care of a drunk that was passed out in the playground. True story, bro.
This was another great review, I laughed out loud several times, mostly at Dr. Linksano. ("Also Frankenstein's not real... yet.") I feel better than I have in a while. Thanks for all your hard work on this show. It means more than you know.
I think I know where that comic was heading storywise: The evil company wanted to create superhumans to take over the world and Baylor was the only scientist in the world working with spiders but did not want to work with them/they knew he would never work with them, so they went to steal his data and kill him.
You can always look at it this way, Lewis: Even if the creator of this comic happens to watch AT4W, hopefully he can watch this episode and laugh along with everyone, saying to himself, "what the hell was I thinking?"
Hey, I like Lightbringer. Sure, eary stuff was a bit too pretentious, but you got better at writing and art. Plus, weren't you the primary creative force behind Crossoverlord? At least I think it was basically your story. That was an awesome comic. And while your art is poor (not going to sugar-coat that much), it is both not unheard of in webcomics to have a good comic with bad art (or else xkcd would not be popular) and I could see where you were moving in your improvement. I would just reccomend a bit more variety in the sound effects (it was a little annoying to read so many "Fzew"s).
On that note, I hope you can update the comic soon. It makes me wonder if you're shopping around for an artist again (I know how hard it can be to find an artist who is willing to work on a superhero comic--I don't know why there's such a prejudice against the genre online).
Nice of you to admit your own Old Shame before criticizing someone else's, Lewis. Personally, I am annoyed by people who look at stuff like that and complain that it shouldn't exist just because it isn't as good as the rest. So only talented people get to write or draw anything? Bullcrap! There's plenty of "pro" stuff that reads like bad fanfiction already, heck terrible B-movies are a market all of their own!
However, the true difference is, as you said, when you have to PAY to read or watch some of that stuff, THEN you can demand your money's worth (assuming you weren't warned about the quality ahead.) But fan fiction and fanart on the web? Nobody forces people to look at it, so why complain about it? It's like going around looking at other people's houses and mock them for not being as stylish as the ones on Lives Of The Rich And Famous! Sheesh!
THAT said, this comic had plenty of problems. Besides the art and story, I couldn't tell what race some of the characters were supposed to be, heck I'm still not sure if Blackweb is supposed to be Black! (Which would make his name even more unfortunate.) I'm surprised you didn't make more comments about that.
Overall I'd say that the only true crime of this comic was that nobody warned the writer and artist how bad it looked next to even the 90's collection of crappy comics.
And Lewis, aren't you overreacting (pre-reacting?) a little about nitpicks in the comment sections? I mean it was funny, but you still came across as if it was a big deal. Or is it?
Wait... If Black Web is supposed to be in his birthday suit when he transformed, then when he leg-choked the security guard he's actually..... Eeeeewwww.
And he also cry acidic urine to boot. (Now THAT'S a superpower you don't see every day. ;p )
Hey Linkara, when are we gonna see another "History of the Power Rangers"? I've stopped watching Atop the Fourth wall months ago, so I don't really keep up with news on your stuff
"On that note, I hope you can update the comic soon. It makes me wonder if you're shopping around for an artist again (I know how hard it can be to find an artist who is willing to work on a superhero comic--I don't know why there's such a prejudice against the genre online)."
I'm waiting on the last pages of the storyline so I can at least finish it all up before going on hiatus again. XD
"Wait... I think I attended your Pokemon message board back in the day. If it was a "Groupboard" chat room, and the name was "Mr. Charizard" something or other, then I think I may have met you before."
It does sound vaguely familiar. XD
"hey, I think JSM's run was pretty awesome, until the editors started messing with it
plus, he insisted on his name being removed from One More Day"
He wanted his name removed from One More Day because he disagreed with how they didn't plan anything out after the deal, and Joe Q convinced him to keep his name on it anyway.
"One thing though, given the fact that JMS got Peter and Mary-Jane back together from their separation, what evidence do yoy have that he supported One More Dat"
They were brought back together because of overwhelming fan dissatisfaction with the implication of her death by airplane and that it was handled even worse there than in One More Day.
As for evidence, I recall reading an interview with him at the time that said he was fully in support of it, partially because of some of the bullcrap reasoning Quesada and other writers have used about "not knowing what to do with her" and the like. He was just angry at the lack of planning for afterwards. Where do you think "It's magic, we don't have to explain it" comes from?
Thanks a bunch. Now he's going to have a five minute disclaimer at the start of his next Power Rangers video about how he doesn't have a set schedule for this project and how he makes this very clear in every single Power Rangers video he makes.
Great review! I actually enjoyed the idea of this charecter, but his origin was rediculous and the story was stupid! (What were all those syringes pointing in his direction, needles up?) Good luck with PSA hell month, that is going to hurt.
Now, how to work "spidacious" into conversation///
Good old old shame. My sentiments on that, for I too wrote... subpar stuff in both original fiction and fanfic.
On the art in Lightbringer... uhm... yeah, you said all about it. You did, however, improve immensely before you got an artist. Okay, the shading is a bit pillowy, and someone really liked his advanced graphics program's blur tools, but other than that, the art has improved greatly. An dang, you sure are better at drawing poses than I am. (Okay, I can't draw at all, unless I can...)
One thing I've always wondered about Lightbringer: Mouse or tablet?
About the comic... uh. There's really nothing more to say about it. It's weird, but not Silver Age weird. Actually, it's kinda bleh. Stuff happens, people do something, but as a whole, we've got nothing, and I don't feel like I could get invested in it.
OK, I'm re-watching some of your older stuff while home sick and had to add this...
At 11:04, when Dr Baylor says he's caught in some sort of dark... Black Web. What jumped into my head was this image from High Anxiety http://www.doblu.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/highanxiety3608.jpg
Where Dick Van Patten's character says he feels like he's trapped in a web.
1: Way to go for basically dumping on a biblical name 2: Adam is a good name especially given the symbolism. 3: The inheriting of the sir name may be a decent argument for this, how ever given that as soon as 'Adam' comes to life Victor freaks out and abandons him. This combined with the other events that happened I'd doubt he'd even want to use that . 4: He may not be real but the fact is, the book had a major emotional effect on me that it is my second most favorite book ever. Also because of this effect he feels almost real. Yeah that may sound weird but I don't care I'm passionate about this book.
The thing is if you had just made the reference and bin done with it I probably wouldn't be leaving this. Buuuut, in an attempt to keep people from leaving comets about who's whom. You came off as a jerk.
First of your reviews where I actually tried to do some background research before the episode aired. I think I chose the wrong week to start doing that.
ReplyDeleteI liked the episode, though I have to note that you paid little attention to the name. Black Web is okay for a title, but its use in the comic is rather atrocious.
Also, looking forward to PSA month
That was a good review, interesting, that you can put yourself in the shoes of the artistic team, and, I really understand you. I just had a look at my first fanfics, I wrote… Oh BOY. I doubt, that I am much better now, but those first tries were really, really bad.

ReplyDeleteA Dr. Derek and no Trauma Center reference?
ReplyDeleteThe homeless guy doesn't really look like he is black, I'd say more of a grayish tone from living out on the street.
ReplyDeleteAlso, just a suggestion, but have you thought of using Commissioner Gordon's line "Clever...Devilishly Clever!" from "Batman: The Movie". Just looking to keep the word diversified in its usage on the show.

ReplyDeleteI wish *I* could get superpowers by being jealous of people.
So how long until you assemble enough Doctor Who clips to have the Cybermen do an entire review on their own?
ReplyDeleteSo venom (the stuff that makes Bane super strong) gets injected into a guy to make him a combination of: Spider-man wall crawling, Wolverine Claws, original at night transformation circumstances of the Hulk, and goo on the body like Venom. Which all come from a single spider.
ReplyDeleteOf course don't you know anything about science.
By the way, what was that other Spider-man Comic that you said would be on the show someday?
I don't know why, but this episode seemed incredibly spontaneous and lively. It's like you really had fun making it and it shows. :)
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work!
@RAF
ReplyDeleteThat Spidey story was one that was arbitrarily tied to Avengers Disassembled, if only because Captain America made guest appearances. (Also, what is it with Captain America always palling around with Spider-Man?)
I liked the old Lightbringer ):
ReplyDeleteHowever, I'm around the age you were when you started, and the quality has definitely improved with time and illustrators.
Yet another amazing review Linara.

Good evening, Linkara.
ReplyDeleteAbout the impossibly fast newspaper headline, I'm reminded of the milk carton you mocked in "All Star Batman", as well as the "Twilight Zone" episode "Printer's Devil".
ReplyDelete*Sniffs* Sorry, but that scene with all the needles... my uncle went the same way, death by needles being forced into the skin by an explosion and all hitting him regardless of where they were positioned before the explosion.
ReplyDeleteOK, in all seriousness, totally digging Linksao's new role. The Continuity Alarm should watch its back, maybe he'll finagle his way into doing that job too...
@Marc
ReplyDeleteThat is the one.
ReplyDeleteI had to pause the video after the 'I am a MAN'-punch just to come and comment on how great it was. Highlights just how reality-breaking the punch actually is. (That would be a pretty cool way to intro a new villain, actually.)
I think this is your best video in awhile. Not to say the others were bad, just that this one *really* worked.
Hey linkara, have yo seen the PR zeo reunion at lexington video?
ReplyDeleteand if you have, what would you think about a darker power rangers series or movie?
the whole spider stingers thing I think they're over explaining it
ReplyDeletethey can just say "hey if organic webshooters appear on your wrists instead of out your butt, why not spider fangs on your wrists too?"
Wow this was badly done but I like what of this comic I've seen. It's like one of those if as larger company like IDW or Dark Horse was to buy the rights they could rewrite this into a good comic. The costume design I really like! It reminds me a lot of a design I did for a Spider-Man villain for a contest on DeviantArt http://boorat.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=24#/d3ceptz http://boorat.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=24#/d3bynza
ReplyDeleteNow, I'm sure some one on here has already pointed this out but the bum in the alley wasn't black he looked to be quite white!
Yay more of Edcational Linksano! I love that bit. I hope to see more of him... But not too much...
ReplyDelete"Odd thing to notice, but didn't Linkara walk the other way at the end? Usually he walks to our right, but this time he walks to our left. Anything's a clue these days. :)"
ReplyDeleteNah, that one's just that I've flipped the futon around.
Official storyline stuff will begin again roughly around mid-late April.
The new Ultimate Spider-Man also has stingers, although I think they're much smaller in comparison and the only function I've heard is that they inflict paralysis.
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of curious about that Pokémon RPG you mentioned. It's the only one of your listed old shames that I haven't heard of.
Looking forward to next week's review!
90s Kid is still fun, good to know he had no lasting effects from having Missing No. in him.
ReplyDeleteThe Spoony Bum sure was nice in this comic. Too bad he's dead... or is he?
Right there with you on the cringe-worthy early fanfic. *shudder*
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw Angela webbed to the wall, the first thing I thought of was the weird bug cocoon transformation thing with Mohinder Suresh in the second (?) season of "Heroes." I don't know if you've seen it, but it was about as entertaining as Black Web.
That's ADMIRAL Captain Redundant to you!
ReplyDeleteWell, that comic wasn't so bad for what it was, I guess, but I can kind of understand why that company went under after only two issues of its first title. It would have been high end for a purely amateur work, done as a hobby by somebody else that had some other source of income. As a serious, presumably professional comic book, however, it wasn't quite polished enough for the open market.
ReplyDeleteAll in all, a good review.
ReplyDeleteActually the more I think on it the mor this plot rings of the Guyver animes/mangas/movies! Evil company that uses humans that transform into freakishly weird monsters as hitmen and for corporate sabotage!
ReplyDeleteAlso I gotta admit I loved the SNL Sean Connery on Jeopardy skit! The funniest bits off that show!
I like old Lightbringer. Your art was getting pretty good before you went to other artists. :)
ReplyDeleteThis comic raises so many questions?
ReplyDeleteOff topic, but in case you missed it, this happened in Thunderbolts last week.
ReplyDeletehttp://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com/tumblr_m1clfxpyOM1r8sujeo1_1280.jpg?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAJ6IHWSU3BX3X7X3Q&Expires=1332897240&Signature=w5FBXtHN1qLzHLE4c0z65GqK1UU%3D
For a moment I feared you were going to play Neil Diamond's "Heartlight" when you showed killer, gun-toating E.T. Now that is pure hilarious cheese.
ReplyDeleteI think all this comic proves is that just because you can make a rip-off of Spider-man doesn't mean you should. The whole ordeal just felt bizarre, silly and weird. And...your comment about the "third stinger"...yeah, probably expains what happens when he changes...though somehow I just got this weird Spawn feel from him.
So, nobody mentions how Blackweb's "uniform" looks a lot like Spider-Man 2099? Or is it just me? :)
ReplyDeleteWhy was he talking about Short Round @ 19:42?
ReplyDeleteGreat review. You know, I understand how you feel about some of your early works, such as Lightbringer, those self-published novels, and of course Web of Dimensions, the one where you're this God mode Sue interacting with Pokemon, Digimon, and Sailor Moon.
ReplyDeleteI gotta be honest.
ReplyDeleteThat's a little harsh to call the evolution theory for the Spider-Man "Other" storyline a "stupid explanation" since a) YOU didn't think of anything ... not saying you had to, but you asked people on your twitter what they thought was the explanation for this and many had that answer, and to just harshly dismiss it seems a bit arrogant and b) evolution does have a predetermined course ... Pokemon? Spider-Man evolves into ... I dunno, Spider-Sabers?
ReplyDeleteIt's not like Petey has those awesome abilities anymore anyway, so, who cares? <_<
Wait, I just realized something... you forgot to point out that they forgot the "r" in "control" when Black Web (I've already forgotten the character's actual name... go fig) is going through his first transformation.
ReplyDeleteAlso, you responded to a comment about the punch thing... that isn't on the comments page. Confused.
ReplyDeleteThat was a clever variation for the "I am a man" joke.
ReplyDeleteWill there be a story line where you learn how to control the "gates" (lack of a better term) that you create from the punch, because I now have an image of you doing the punch to get an item you need to fight a villian.
ReplyDeleteAfter the twitter responses, I was reminded of that explanation in the comics - it's been a while since I read "The Other." It wasn't THEIR theory, it was the theory put forth in the story... and it's a stupid theory.
Also: Pokemon are not a true example of evolution.
"Also, you responded to a comment about the punch thing... that isn't on the comments page. Confused."
ReplyDeleteI think they may have deleted their post. XD
You referenced Fletcher Hank! Oh gods, I hope you do a review of a Stardust the Super Wizard comic.
ReplyDeleteSo why exactly didn't this psychotic lame mix of Batman and Spiderman just go to the POLICE. There is nothing to suggest that the police couldn't handle it. He could have just given the guy's name and list of contacts to the police and they probably could have handled it with a minimum amount of murder.
ReplyDeleteAnd apparently Angela is also an idiot.
ReplyDeleteEh Linkara, I dont think JMS deserves to be bashed for One More Day. That story was very obviously editorial mandate just like Sins Past.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I think it might actually be a good thing that your early bad stuff is out there for all the world to see - I mean, I know it must be uncomfortable for you (as the author of some low-quality fanfiction, I can empathize), BUT...
ReplyDeleteMost every creative-type person who's got some experience is unanimous: when you do it for the first time, you'll fail.
ReplyDeleteEvolution is probably one of the most misrepresented scientific concepts in fiction, despite it actually being surprisingly simple.
ReplyDeleteSins Past was his idea to begin with.
ReplyDeleteI actually own a copy of this one. You can say what you want about it, but it is a FUN read.
ReplyDeleteI interpreted the bad guy going from in the shadows to being not in the shadows to meaning he also had some kind of nocturnal transformation going on. It doesn't quite work the way it was done, though.
I haven't got a clue what that cyberman was supposed to be saying in that clip...
ReplyDelete"I haven't got a clue what that cyberman was supposed to be saying in that clip..."
ReplyDelete"Clever. Clever."
very funny stuff
ReplyDeleteOne thing though, given the fact that JMS got Peter and Mary-Jane back together from their separation, what evidence do yoy have that he supported One More Dat
ReplyDeleteThis was another great review, I laughed out loud several times, mostly at Dr.
ReplyDeleteYou can always look at it this way, Lewis: Even if the creator of this comic happens to watch AT4W, hopefully he can watch this episode and laugh along with everyone, saying to himself, "what the hell was I thinking?"
ReplyDeletehey, I think JSM's run was pretty awesome, until the editors started messing with it
ReplyDeleteplus, he insisted on his name being removed from One More Day
Everyone gets like that with their early work. The stuff I've written makes me facepalm and hate myself for being an idiot to this day.
ReplyDeleteAt first glance, I thought the guy was flipping me the bird on the cover. The dagger thing is placed in just the right place to make a rude gesture.
ReplyDeleteThe "I am a MAN!" punch involving the camera angles made me laugh, as did Dr. Linksano.
And I know I was going to put more in this comment box, but I forgot what I was going to put in. Curses.
Y'know, I'd take Liefeld over this guy anyday
ReplyDeleteHey, I like Lightbringer.
ReplyDeleteOn that note, I hope you can update the comic soon. It makes me wonder if you're shopping around for an artist again (I know how hard it can be to find an artist who is willing to work on a superhero comic--I don't know why there's such a prejudice against the genre online).
Yeah I have mixed feelings about Lightbringer (mostly the "Before CR" artwork)
DeleteNice of you to admit your own Old Shame before criticizing someone else's, Lewis.
ReplyDeleteHowever, the true difference is, as you said, when you have to PAY to read or watch some of that stuff, THEN you can demand your money's worth (assuming you weren't warned about the quality ahead.) But fan fiction and fanart on the web?
Eeeeewwww.
ReplyDeleteAnd he also cry acidic urine to boot. (Now THAT'S a superpower you don't see every day. ;p )
Speaking of "The Other" - "One More Day" seems to have erased that story from continuity.
ReplyDeleteAlso, apparently BlackWeb has the same modesty powers as the Silver Surfer.
Hey Linkara, when are we gonna see another "History of the Power Rangers"? I've stopped watching Atop the Fourth wall months ago, so I don't really keep up with news on your stuff
ReplyDelete"On that note, I hope you can update the comic soon. It makes me wonder if you're shopping around for an artist again (I know how hard it can be to find an artist who is willing to work on a superhero comic--I don't know why there's such a prejudice against the genre online)."
ReplyDeleteI'm waiting on the last pages of the storyline so I can at least finish it all up before going on hiatus again. XD
"Wait... I think I attended your Pokemon message board back in the day. If it was a "Groupboard" chat room, and the name was "Mr. Charizard" something or other, then I think I may have met you before."
ReplyDeleteIt does sound vaguely familiar.
In re. to Anonymous.
ReplyDeleteThanks a bunch. Now he's going to have a five minute disclaimer at the start of his next Power Rangers video about how he doesn't have a set schedule for this project and how he makes this very clear in every single Power Rangers video he makes.
on a very loosely related note of amateur work
ReplyDeletecongratulations Linkara!
you are now a pony!

NEW DOCTOR WHO MMO, Linkara

OUT NOW
What do you think?
P.S. Pokemon World ain't got nothing on this
Great review! I actually enjoyed the idea of this charecter, but his origin was rediculous and the story was stupid! (What were all those syringes pointing in his direction, needles up?) Good luck with PSA hell month, that is going to hurt.
ReplyDeleteNow, how to work "spidacious" into conversation///
Good old old shame. My sentiments on that, for I too wrote... subpar stuff in both original fiction and fanfic.
ReplyDeleteOn the art in Lightbringer... uhm... yeah, you said all about it.
And finally... best I AM A MAN punch ever.
OK, I'm re-watching some of your older stuff while home sick and had to add this...
ReplyDeleteAt 11:04, when Dr Baylor says he's caught in some sort of dark... Black Web. What jumped into my head was this image from High Anxiety http://www.doblu.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/highanxiety3608.jpg
Where Dick Van Patten's character says he feels like he's trapped in a web.
XD
Love this review...still good stuff Linkara.
1: Way to go for basically dumping on a biblical name
ReplyDelete2: Adam is a good name especially given the symbolism.
