Animinneapolis Stuff

Heyo! Stuff happened while I was at Animinneapolis aside from the Live Show and here are a couple of things. First up, I did another panel where I discussed with Madness Mark the New 52. Unfortunately, there's only audio of it, but you should still be able to listen to it and get the same idea.

So for those of you who want my most recent thoughts on the DC Relaunch (which I've been having a strange amount of new requests asking for them), here you go!

MarkMadness and Linkara discuss the New 52 HERE!

And for those who didn't listen to them before, you can recall my early thoughts back when I was doing That's All I'm Saying last September by clicking the "TAIS" tag at the bottom of the post!

Also, I did an interview where I answered some questions from the people! I still need to put together the questions from the Live Show, but here's some more fun for you in the meantime!

In the panel with MarkMadness, I could barely hear the questions the audience members were asking. I suppose that's understandable, but I had no idea what you were talking about when you said that your brother was trying to get you interested in something (about 45 minutes in).

Yeah, there isn't much that can be done in that situation. Some bigger cons have mics just for questions, but not tiny events like these. No lie, the mic Linkara was using was only $12. It's was a pretty awful setup.

Im still checking The interview but i came across with your comments on Batman: The Dark Knight, and I agree is a really dumb title but just for you to know Finch is no longer the writer of it, the new writer is Gregg Hurwitz, and is kind of a big deal now cause Hurwitz wrote a very recent miniseries called Penguin: Pain and Prejudice, and is incredibly good, is really depressing, fenomenal art, and excellent dialog and plot, is basically Penguin's Killer Joke, and this guy is taking over the title just last week with Issue 10 and a new reinvention on Scarecrow, Its a huge improvement on the quality of the book, though not as good as the penguin series, though is giving a lot of hope for the title, check it out

I just listened to your TAIS, and i just wanted to ask your opinion on which one of the dc reboot books would be good for a comic book newbie?

Also, I completely agree with your idea of a pokemon MMO being AWESOME!

Alright, this has been driving me nuts, but can anyone explain just what it is that makes people keep attaching Rob Liefeld to Hawk and Dove? I mean, attaching Rob Liefeld to anything is questionable, but when Hawk and Dove get brought back he's always either connected to it or on the list to be connected. What gives?

Jarkes said...

Anyway, in regards to the interview... The other Fighting Pokemon in Black and White you were thinking of is called Sawk, not Judo. And how is a living trash bag any weirder than, say, living toxic waste?

Just a little warning: you may have opened yourself up to some flames with your comments about the new Pokemon (although I'm surprised you didn't mention the ice cream cone Pokemon, Vanillite). The Gen V Pokemon are... divisive, to say the least.

And if you want real-time strategy style Pokemon, check out Pokemon Conquest, a crossover between the Pokemon series and the Nobunaga's Ambition series. Basically, it involves real people from the feudal Japan era using Pokemon to conquer feudal Japan. From what I've read, it's as awesome as it sounds. It's for the regular DS, so you don't have to buy a 3DS for it.

So, if I may ask about Pokemon Black and White, what do you think of the game's story, or at least as far as you've gotten in the game?

Adam Cordelle said...

I used to like Pokemon, but I could never get into it. I grew up with Digimon. I liked that the Digimon could talk and that there were evil digimon. Every Pokemon movie after the first I keep asking for pure evil pokemon, but nope. Even Darkrei and Giratina who look like evil manevolent beings, NOT evil. That always bothered me. So, Digimon forever.

you should still give it a chance,in the book Andrew becomes basically Vampire Jesus and is now the Lord of all vampires and on the next issue #11 all of the Vampires are going to fight NINJA ZOMBIES!

im not kidding, is this group that fights vampires and they get an spell on them so that they turn zombies when they die to keep fighting, Its gonna be sweet =D

and on a side note, Fialkov is probably one of the most underrated writers right now, and he is facing some of economical difficulties right now, and he still not getting a second book on DC, so when I,Vamp is gone it might be it for him there.

yeah, they give Liefeld 3 titles but not someone like him
just give it a chance you will not regret

Well, Darkrai's pretty evil in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness...

Speaking of Digimon, Linkara, are you aware that "Digimon: The Movie" was actually three of the Japanese movies crammed together into one, with the third one (the part with Willis) losing an entire subplot? Actually, only the first two are supposed to tie into each other; Jeff Nimoy, the guy in charge of the dub, wanted to just release those two together and release the third as a standalone TV special. Fox execs forced him to mash all three of them together, hence the "Willis created Diaboromon/Diablomon" BS.

I'll take garbage bags and ice cream cones over the generic "badass" wolf/raptor/dragon pokemon a lot of fanboys seem to want anyday. And I say that as someone who played every gen when it was current.

I mean, come on, look at this cutie:

My thoughts on a few titles you talked about:

Action Comics: Linkara, you must read issue 9. It should be able to win you over or at least check out issue 10. The series has really gotten good.
Aquaman: Brilliant series! Slow, but awesome and beautiful to look at. You must catch up with the arc since it is good and brought in Black Manta. Also, I heard Ocean Master will appear soon. Have no clue who he is, but I want to know!
Batman: The Dark Knight: Has gotten much better with the new writer. Worth a look now, if only for one issue.
Birds of Prey: Again, this title has gotten a lot better as it went along. Hell, it is much better the last Birds of Prey run.
Catwoman: LOVE IT. Everything you said was good about it before the sex scene in the first issue continues on. Selina, now, has went from a wild, thrill seeking burglar to a neat anti-hero who is now standing up for the lowest people in Gotham. In fact, this past issue, Catwoman actually turns down 3 possible heists just so she can train and ready herself to track down Dollhouse, this latest villain who is kidnapping prostitutes and runaways. This title has come a significant way since the first issue and you should at least check out the first trade.
Detective Comics: Tony Daniel is coming off this soon, so maybe we can get a new and good writer.
I, Vampire: See Anoldoaad’s comment. He says it best.
Justice League: Weird, I thought the story got better at the seventh issue. I love the Shazam backup. When Billy was a goody two-shoes, I found him utterly boring. Now I feel like there is something too him now. Plus, issue 9 shows the good kid side you were missing. To each their own.
Justice League Dark: Much better now that Jeff Lemire is on it (writer of Animal Man & Frankenstein). Really worth reading now.
The Savage Hawkman: Actually, Rob isn’t drawing it. Joe Bennett is and it looks marvelous. Cover art blows though.
Swamp Thing: Brilliant! Read it for the Animal Man crossover cause you can’t right Animal Man without it.
Voodoo: Turned into the sci-fi thriller after the first issue and then killed off a lot of its cast and became a regular scif-fi title. Weird shift, but what ya going to do when you switch writers half way through the first arc.

So if you are take anything way from my comment, please note that Catwoman and Justice League Dark are much better and really worth reading right now.

Barry Allen was the best of the silver age. Check out a glories podcast called Tom vs The Flash where he humorously recaps all of the Barry Allen stories.

And it's too bad about Firestorm. It's a genius concept; two very different people rely on each other to access an incredible power. If you got someone to explore that duality of identity it could be an amazing story.

Re: Flash

Ah, ye olde question since Flash: Rebirth: "What about/Where's Wally West?"

I do not have any believe that DC will ever bring the character back under the DiDio regime, particularly after editorial vetoed his attempt to include Wally in the New 52 Flash. Quite a shame but I remember what Kelson Vibber said on his blog, Speed Force, it was the sense of momentum that make Wally an interesting character. He took the baton from Barry after Crisis on Infinite Earths and his maturation under Baron, Messner-Loebs, Waid and Geoff Johns (to an extent but his run focused more on building up the classic Rogues than Wally) and there was a consistent flow to the story. Then DC shunted Wally to parts unknown in Infinite Crisis an broke the momentum of the character.

Then came the abortive Bart Allen Fastest Man Alive series that did not go well. Then they killed Bart Allen, which tied into Countdown so you know it was a horrible story, and brought back Wally but he was not the same. Partly because the Rogues became little more than an afterthought in Waid's second (or was it third?) run. What even irked me more is that Wally came off as more like Barry Allen-lite in personality and a guest star in his own book. There was potential; how would Wally deal with the Captian Cold and crew after Inertia "tricked" them into killing Bart? Waid could have brought back the supporting characters from Johns' first run (hell, why not some of the Messner-Loebs crew?) and I think that is where I stopped caring about Wally West. The character stalled and stagnated for all intents so I turned to Barry when they brought him back in Final Crisis and never looked back.

To bring Wally back and make him the primary Flash would essentially be an admission that DC does not know what to do with the franchise. Especially after what happened with Wally's clumsy return in 2007. That is not to say I hate Wally, far from it, but Wally's fan base has to "sell" on the character again because it is not impossible for him to regain momentum or even co-exist with Barry. If Geoff Johns could make an awesome saving throw by bringing Conner Kent and Bart Allen back in Legion of Three Worlds, a skilled writer can salvage Wally, Barry, and the Flash mythos.

So my question to Linkara and the others is this: how do you want Wally West to return? Especially in the scheme of the New 52 where we still have Barry and Bart Allen as Kid Flash.

"Where did he get the gi?"

Where did Hitmonchan get his boxing gloves? His shoes? His tunic?

How is the garbage bag Pokémon any different from the toxic waste Pokémon? Or the magnet Pokémon? Or the the one that's just a ball with eyes? Or the OTHER one that's just a ball with eyes and a mouth.

Where did people get the idea that Pokémon is supposed to be realistic? Where did people get the idea that they were always a stand in for animals until "Generation this many after my childhood"? Pokémon has always been like this, I don't get why people are acting like it's such a heinous thing for the series to be what it's always been.

No argument here that we don't need new Pokémon but does it never occur to anyone that they like making new Pokémon? I find it very selective to take a handful of the more bizarre Pokémon, pretend that's all the new gen has, pretend they never had weird Pokémon before, and then say they're running out of ideas when I see a lot of creativity in the new designs. Plus Gen 5 has Samurot. If they keep making things that awesome, I don't care how many of them we go through.

Sorry if I came off as snarky but I've heard that argument so many times, and it's so easily defeatable.

I'm confident we'll get the games you described eventually, if you take a look at the spin off series it's obvious they're willing to go out of their comfort zone, just slowly. Poképark Wii seems to be a step in the right direction, now they just need to work in trainers and give it a main series atmosphere. And people have already talked about Pokémon Conquest so I don't need to.

I'm not saying you must love every new Pokémon either, I accept that I'm the only one who thought ice cream Pokémon was a hilariously brilliant idea. It's just that Pokémon is like certain comics, it's supposed to be silly, it was always supposed to be silly. Just some food for thought.

Have you tried Justice League Dark since Jeff Lemire took over? It's gotten a lot better. It feels more like a team book now.

Also, I really like the new Shazam title. I understand that Batson is supposed to be a bright and happy kid, but the fact is, that's not easy to relate to, especially in these more cynical times. He is still a good kid and you can tell he wants to care, but he's had a hard life and it has made him distrustful, which is obviously something he's going to overcome with time. It's standard hero's journey type stuff, but I think it works for this character. Yeah, I know they tried something similar with the new Action Comics title and it didn't work, but I think it can work here.

i kinda like the blue beetle title. to be honest, there were times were i was about to drop it(to be specific, when he stab his friend and when he leaves the city). but i kind of like it. maybe is the fact that i like this kind of...i would say "powers" for the lack of a better word.
Batwoman...i'l not gonna lie. i read it because lesbian action, keep rading because i love the charcter, and drop it because i didn't like where it was going after issue 4 or 5...and because i'm not reading night of the owls(long story short, i'm reading brightest day, and i want to be focused when reading "night of the owls").

Demon Knights, what can i say? it is just plain awesome. to be honest, THIS is the book that got me into comics.

btw, you have any opinion in Dial H?

Wait, I thought they did comment on I, Vampire? It was in between Hawk and Dove and Justice League, but they didn't actually mention it by name and their discussion of it was that it was "Meh," unless they were talking about Justice League then.

I was kind of hoping to hear about The Culling, even though I wasn't expecting to hear about the Second Wave.

So what do you have against Dan DiDio?

I've had a busy week + so I'm a bit late to seeing this. Thank you for posting the interviews, I really enjoy hearing your opinions on things.

This is take 2 at making this comment something went screwy when I requested a new image for the captcha and it deleted the message the first try.

I'm so surprised to out of the blue hear another idea for a CastleVania Pokémon Crossover.

My idea that I discussed with friends involved taking Super CastleVania IV stripping out the weapons other than the whips and replacing the enemies with wild Pokémon. You could defend yourself with the whip and play that way but you could also capture and battle with the Pokémon along the way. Collecting empty Pokéballs and Pokébucks along the way. Replacing the Mid boss and level boss battles with trainer battles.

Your idea seems to have had some good ideas for control mechanics. I just wish I knew someone programming for current game systems because I think it could be really fun to play if it ever got put together.

Just surprising I'm not the only one not just wanting this kind of game but was drawing on the same series for game environment ideas.
