Longbox of the Damned: Blackest Night

Longbox of the Damned 30.

  1. I didn't quite read *all* of BN, but I read quite a lot. I have to admit to being somewhat disappointed in the Batman tie-in. I really felt "Batman vs. Space Zombies" should have had more going for it.

On the other hand, the main series was very enjoyable, as were both of the Green Lantern books that tied into it. I also loved the Question tie-in, as well as the gimmick of "rising" cancelled series from the dead. Very clever, DC.

Now that we're almost at the end of October, I'm curious; were there any big-name horror comics that you wanted to review but were unable to? (That we might see next time around, perhaps?)

  2. I am guessing the next one is Frankenstein: Agent of Shade since it seems to be the next book in the opening. I have to agree, that Blackest night was a great book, I got it for christmas 2 years ago, and last Christmas I got Long Halloween and the three halloween books written by Jeph Lobe.

  3. I think my comment got lost. I got sidetracked and couldn't finish the captcha process. I didn't know it times out and I guess I forgot to click the last button before checking on that thing in the kitchen.

The short version is this is nice but I can't avoid thinking about how much fun Black Lantern Spoony was and I would like seeing it happen again. So much so that I was thinking about that and have almost no comment on the actual comic event.

  4. I LOVED Moerte's distain for the Black Lanterns. It made sense and gave me that good old fashioned Halloween feeling.

I really want to get the main Black Lantern series now, and I might take a look at the some of the tie-ins. I already loved the Wonder Woman issues.

Of course, I'll need to remember to read while wearing my Black Lantern Ring ;)

  5. While I have not read the comic I did enjoy seeing Krypto and Martha Kent beating up a zombie earth 2 Superman in their corn field.

Krypto is the best dog ever.

That and watching Beast Boy rip Terra apart as a bear was fun.

  6. Moerte is obviously a Yellow Lantern at heart

and for some reason, I have the strange feeling that the current Third Army event over in the Green Lantern corner, and the Rot-World event in the Dark corner of the DC Universe are ultimately just attempts to re-capture the feel of the Blackest Night

Now, don't get me wrong, love both events, and I'm getting every single tie-in, but it does feel as if it was already done before

At least they aren't taking so long to find their weakness this time. In the pages of the Red Lanterns, Atrocitus finds out that the members of the Third Army can be killed through their eyes
Of course, seeing as some protagonists were already assimilated (as seen in Green Lantern Corps.), the other heroes may want to find a cure instead

  7. I'm going to miss this segment.

  8. I'm surprised that Linkara got all the spin off comics. I did the same (because I seriously underestimated how many there would be and asked my local comic book shop to hold them all for me) and my comic book bill for blackest night alone was enormous.

Out of all the tie ins the one that stands out the most in my memory is Blackest Night Catwoman. It builds on previous events and informs later ones but is still a good stand alone story despite the fact that it is an event comic.

I can't really remember much of what happens in the other tie ins.

  9. Now this is another awesome comic that looks and sounds great.

Black Laterns who want to kill all life in the universe and it's the zombies who do it? Count me it because that sounds like a damn fine story.

Well, one more until Halloween. Quite exciting, huh?

  10. With Blackest Night I've only read the tie ins and not the main book (though I plan to get around to it)... and the tie-ins all work wonderfully on their own, and that's what makes BN a great crossover IMO. The tie ins play with the concept and deliver satisfying stories all of their own... The only other crossover that comes close to that is Marvel's "The Infinity War" where the tie-ins mostly just played with the concept of the Dopplegangers (The best of those IMO being Silver Sable having her annual diplomatic dinner with Doctor Doom and being received instead by his Doppleganger).

As for BN Tie ins, ones I liked in particular were the Teen Titans tie in where Cassie help Conner overcome the ring, because I felt that had the best character development, Katana fighting against her husband and children, and hell the Superboy Prime tie in, he's an aggravating character but I laughed all the way through that one.

  11. Well... just one more to go. :(
I'm curious, how you will end it!

And I wonder how many people will dress up as Moarte tomorrow. :3

  12. Why doesn't DC include the tie-ins in the trade collection? Let the readers get the full wallop.

Also, does Moarte's description on Nekron make anybody else think of Judge Death? Actually, if DC and Rebellion kindle good relations again, that could be an awesome epic crossover - Black Lantern Corps commanded by the Dark Judges? Drokk yes!

  13. "Why doesn't DC include the tie-ins in the trade collection? Let the readers get the full wallop."

In this case, all the tie-ins and miniseries got their own trades. If you look near the bottom of my shelves, you'll see I've got them all.

  14. Oh boy I was waiting for this one ever since I saw it inside the long box during the opening!

I am not a comic reader. While I do have interest in them, I mostly stick to watching the animated works and reading wikipedia articles. However the premise of Blackest Night was too good to pass up. I also read everything the event had to offer and I loved it.

I especially love the parts where characters revive as Black Lanterns. The way they show that character's life story as the ring 'downloads' the memory really helped a guy like me who had no idea who most of those people were before hand.

Such an epic event and if I only read one comic series, I'm glad that was it.

  15. Oh man. Necron's oath always sent a chill down my spine when I heard it in DCUO, and Moarte's delivery had the same effect. Awesome work there.

  16. Ah, The Spoony Black Lantern reference a while back now makes more senses to me as non comic book regular reader. Back than, I only figured out it had something to do with a GL storyline with the Undead being involve. This is a great way to show off and inform this comic book crossover. By the sound of it, it's a fantastic collection of comics that doesn't deserve to be shown on the Atop of the 4th Wall. I wonder if any of the many ghostbusters comics will appear next year if the longbox is resurrected. Halloween is coming very close and I wonder what will be the final comic. But, I'll find out

  17. I've actually lost count of how often I've seen the trade for this one. Might pick it up the next time I see it.

  18. Moarte of Earth, you have the ability to instill great fear. Welcome to the Sinestro Corps! Will you serve?

I absolutely loved Blackest Night, especially how they resurrected cancelled series for an extra issue, including James Robinson's Starman. I never read a tie-in to Blackest Night that I didn't like, making it my benchmark for a successful crossover event.

  19. Ooh, I liked this comic. My knowledge of the DC-universe is still sketchy at best, but that wasn't a hindrance.

Only BN tie-in I read (before I ever read BN itself), was Booster Gold's. Damn near broke my heart.

  20. could you make a new ongoing series where once per week you share withe us the best books you've read currently... like a that's all i'm saying session, but with less spoilers and only about good books! kinda like your cristhmas special but in smaller sacale!

  21. God I hated this story. Characters that died for no reason just to die. Then the characters should have come back don't.

  22. I happily forgive any silliness of the main BN story because I got to see Scarecrow being all sad that he's not being chased by Batman. And oh the joy he felt when granted the yellow ring! Totally worth everything

  23. Hey Linkara, Thanks for the recommendation, I think it was a breezy read for me and i enjoyed every moment (even the nods back to Identity Crisis), I just got started reading Brightest Day and was wondering what do u think of that book ?
