  1. That was pretty BA.

    Never heard of Tomboy.

  2. Thanks for sharing this. That was indeed most awesome. Is there a site that has more of her stories since its public domain.

  3. That moment when a girl with no superpowers does the job fit for Superman. Truly awesome!

  4. On the one hand, great to see you're doing this "Moment of Awesome" bit again, and I do always love seeing non-mainstream superheroes do badass things like riding a plane on the outside.

On the other hand... did Tomboy just kill people? Well, I suppose it was the Golden Age, and there weren't a lot of options at the time, and her actions did save far more lives... uh, okay, I had an argument here, but it kind of derailed.

Point conceded; Tomboy's awesome. Kind of question the name choice, though.

  5. For a second there, I did think that she could fly. The Golden Age seemed to have a large proportion of badass normals. That, and seemingly omnipotent vigilantes who would inflict bizarre punishments on wrongdoers.

"The Claw"? No relation to the racist Daredevil villain, I suppose.

  6. Wow Clark Gable went over the edge in his old age.

  7. Oh, Golden Age. You never disappoint when it comes to punish villains and ruining their day.

  8. What's up with the villain there? He looks like he's trying to out-smile the Joker, but ends up looking more goofy than creepy!

  9. Cue Heavy Metal Music.

My day has definitely been made that much more awesome.

  10. *Cue Heavy Metal Music*

Just another day for Tomboy - Super BAMF. My day is now significantly more awesome.

  11. Why the heck haven't they brought THIS character back? This chick is freakin' awesome...

  12. She doesn't really look like a tomboy, though.

  13. Well that was pretty awesome. The Golden Age is a gold mine for decent plot ideas.

And hey, I found Tomboy's (brief) wiki page on Public Domain Superheroes. Which means, as far as I can tell, no one would mind if someone were to bring the character back. Internet, get one this!

Although she'd probably need an update or seven. Like maybe incorporating the fact that she's called Tomboy to make make some kind of genderbend character. Like that she in normal life passes off as a boy because of her attitude and less feminine physique. So basically make her a younger version of Cyber Six.

Just a thought. We can brainstorm.

  14. Is it ever explained why The Claw has wolf paws? Is that his superpower that made him decide to become a crime boss? Or are they gloves?

  15. Haven't seen one of these posts in about 3 years.

  16. Yor of the Future....you met your match

  17. Is that really the end of Claw? Or is it the reason he put on steel gauntlets and got a Cat to base a villainous organization logo off of? But that's just a MAD idea.

  18. I don't know who this girl is but that was simply awesome! Whoever owns her needs to leave her alone so that she doesn't fall victim to the idiotic updates (which normally leads to character degradation) that we usually see on this show.

  19. Man, that mobster boss sounds like Skeletor in my head

and seriously, are there more scans with this character?

seeing as she's public domain, one could actually do a series with her, without worrying about copyrights

  20. "That moment when a girl with no superpowers does the job fit for Superman. Truly awesome!"

To be fair, doing something like this without any superpowers would be physically impossible. Sure, in Golden Age comic books there was some weird physic (like salt giving you superpowers 50 years before Bioshock Infinite). But in present times, better to leave this job to Superman.

  21. I'm all for the internet getting ahold of her before DC or marvel. We all know they don't need more female superheroes to fill all of those 'fridges.

I'm going to start some fanart later today for this.
What's everyone thinking for costume update? Hit-girl meets robin? Super-powered hoodie of justice and comfy, easy-to-wear shorts? Keep the golden age garish color scheme and skirt and polo?

  22. Now I know who Alex Ross should use if they ever bring back Project Super Powers.

  23. It bothers me that she survives a plane crash by timing her jump to just before she hits the water.. momentum, nahhhhh, never heard of it!

There's actually a study in psychology of this fallacy. Apparently we are hard wired to believe this dangerous nonsense.

Well, let's face it, until recently our speeds were insignificant, and if you were falling any great distance, it wasn't like you had a parachute, you were going to die so you might as well get comfy!

  24. Of course, this was before she got accepted by a major superhero team and got demoted to secretary work and running a daycare for the kids of the more "active" members of the team.

Then the Silver age hit and she was revealed to be a giant mutant slug the entire time. Go figure.

  25. That guy's mouth is amazing.

  26. Yeah, Tomboy (and Captain Flash, for that matter) were heroes created in the 50s to test the water, seeing if the public were ready for superheroes again... they probably weren't, seeing as the comic only lasted for issues.

I myself am working on reviving them both - since 4 issues is hardly a grand mythos to come through. They're online in digital copy, so pretty easy to go though.

But yeah - Tomboy is seems to embody society's expectation of women in her civilian identity, but then she uses information overheard from her Police Lieutenant father to stop crimes (and she appeared 7 years before Batgirl)

and yeah - Claw is called Claw cause he has claws... distracts people from the face, I suppose

Another guy she fights, Soundwave, has a truck with a sonic canon

Golden age is all kinds of cool

  27. "Updating" Tomboy to be "modern" would probably ruin her. Part of why this is awesome is that it's just straight-up golden age. It's just pure (violent) fun.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Updating could work - have her civilian identity as some kind of Hilton type socialite

  29. You can get the comic book here (you need to download Comical to read it):

The Tomboy story starts on page 16.

  30. That...was awome!

The world always needs more badass female super heroes like this!

    ReplyDelete
  31. No wonder why Tomboy called that guy "mad" because his face is REALLY CRAZY!
