Love the new look of the room! Shows off the many victories you have gotten, Lewis. Just be careful with Mechakara’s hand there. All in all, keep it up.
Also, I noticed Deadpool was created by Rob Liefeld. That really doesn’t matter, right? He’s still hilarious. Case in point: http://m7781.deviantart.com/art/the-shining-x-deadpool-328276462
Wait a second! This is like Live and Let Die! Tiger is Dr. Kananga, Fortune is Solitaire, That bad Mohawk guy might as well be Tee-Hee, and Vox must be Baron Samandi. What does that make Doom? James Bond?
"Wait a second! This is like Live and Let Die! Tiger is Dr. Kananga, Fortune is Solitaire, That bad Mohawk guy might as well be Tee-Hee, and Vox must be Baron Samandi. What does that make Doom? James Bond?
Tell me if you did noticed that too, Lewis?"
Ehhh, I think it's a bit of a stretch.
That having been said, I'm not interested in who's Sheriff Pepper in this scenario.
Why did you decided to redecorate in the middle of the month? Why not at the beginning of a story line? That being said, get the other book shelf it looks weird with only one. Also what episode is the Bridger clip from?
Bardock: Father of Goku Special. I asked KaiserNeko for the original raw audio, since otherwise the background noise for the clip was very distracting. XD
Doom 2099 is definitely one of my favorite comic series ever. I read in while in high school and it really convinced me of the potential of characters like Dr. Doom. Also the series gets absurdly awesome with Doom's righteous fury.
what 90's Kid logo? All in all Linkara this is one of your better episodes and with a good comic im stunned! Oh and when you looked at 2099's kid and he proclaimed sewing machine! I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. As well as the opening quote SAME EFFECT! Oh and the Shelves look Awesome!
Quick, somebody start a Kickstarter account to get a Mr. T vs. Doctor Doom comic going!
Maybe both depictions of Doom in Latveria are accurate and Doom has mood swings which decide how he treats his people, "Attention citizens of Latveria, your lord and master Doctor Doom is pissed off today please be advised that he doesn't care about you and will more than likely vaporize you if you so much as get within 12 feet of him today. Also we're going by imperial measurement today, those who use metric measurements will be shot by order of Lord Doom. The BINGO game is still scheduled for 4 PM."
Well Oscar Wilde is spelled with an 'e.' So the 'e' in the name doesn't really seem like a problem. Also, nice to see the Poor Literacy is Kewl being completed again.
Maybe psychic lady was predicting Final or Infinite Crisis instead.
Reason for Doom's time travel: "I must see the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who!" Unfortunately, his Vortex Manipulator wasn't calibrated properly and he over shot it by a ways.
Having not read the series, maybe the guy sitting in the chair is Chameleon 2099.
Do you make money off of the pop up ads? Just curious, a lot of them popped up in this episode for me.
Great episode Linkara, another series I'm going to have to look up. The shelves look pretty good too although I think you should back the camera up a little bit. The end shot really answered a question for me, the whole video I felt...well Doom around me and I couldn't understand why and then the reveal, the whole time Bear was staring at me.
In fairness, Wylde isn't that ridiculas a surname. Oscar Wilde already has the e, and it isn't unreasonable for a y to pop in there after 100 years (I'm fairly sure I've seen someone with the surname Wylde already).
Was a good review, and yeah, Doom is one of those characters who, despite being a villain, can hold a title role as the "hero" because of how charismatic (and hammy) he is. Witness his TV Tropes page.
Using "E1M1- Hangar" from Doom was a great touch, but I personally would've mixed it up with the Hangarmageddon version off the Dark Side of Phobos remix album. But that's just me.
One my favorite bits from this series was when Doom got replaced as the President of Future!America by (get this) an evil robotic drug-addict Captain America. It's as nutty as it sounds.
I gotta say, i'm rather surprised that no rabid fans have posted to say that putting shelves on the walls behind you has "RUINED AT4W FOREVER!!!!11!", or something to that effect.
An important detail not mentioned in this video is that Gipsy lady is not just a member of Doom's tribe. She's a descendant of Boris, Doctor Doom's most loyal servant, who knew Doom's parents, and is the only man Doom truly trusts as a friend.
So Doom sort of like CM Punk's Straight Edge heal gimmick? Knowing how much punk comic book i'm not surprised. I mean who straight edge being meaning he is better then you. Oh god stop fueling slash fiction Linkara. There is to much of it out there anyway. Yeah this was a good book and I'm glad it holds up over the years. I won't spoil what happens later in the series I wasn't to happy with everything.
Now that's one metal cover! Seriously, I'd print that on an album
Also, I know you told us not to name out examples of good series with a villain lead, but you maw have provided us with an excellent example right in the ending credits, without even realizing it Invader ZIM, the proof that you CAN make a racist, genocidal sociopath lovable
Hey Linkara what is that brown thing on the shelf above the porcelain bunny? It's been bugging me the entire episode I've been trying to figure out what it is.
I was going to mention Gene Wilder, but Lostshadows beat me to it. Also, Wyld is both a real last name and one of the craters in the moon. Maybe that's where the name came from? As a fan of Doctor Doom, i gotta say, there are quite a few comics that either show him as a competent and(sorta) caring leader for his nation, even the ones who don't usually mention that Latveria was worse off before he became it's ruler. Really like the shelves behind the couch, by the way.
Wow. That was surprisingly better than I had imagined. Hmmm, still wondering if X-men 2099 was any good. I was also curious of Ghost Rider 2099. The premise sounded kind of cool. Anyway, looking forward to the last part of 2099 month. Will you be doing this again next year? I hope to see 2090's Kid again...
The panel of Doom making a fist with the new armor reminds me of Dr. Claw, I think it's the spikes. You have any plans of ever looking at any other VillainProtagonist comics?
Out of curiosity, how did Linkara get a Lord Vice helmet when he banished Vice to another planet (still in corporeal form)? Were there just extras on the spaceship?
IS Blake's 7 any good? I'm curious because a lot of the fans of one of my favorite shows, Farscape, say they're pretty similar. On another note, the new background looks nice. I love that the porcelain bunny makes its return. The cybermat is cute too. Are you going to make cybermites now that that concept has spawned up?
I guess the 'Doom is isn't a racist' thing was in reference to the racist Doombot (how the hell did that get past quality control?) that was in Hudiln's terrible Black Panther run.
This comic looks interesting. I always like when you do review stuff that is rather good it keeps your show fresh if the comic doesn´t suck every week.
Also i think the shelves look great behind the couch. But it bugged me that the camera was to close. I think the zooming out at the end looked better.
Re: "fairy tale kingdom". To be fair, they never said it was a *nice* fairy tale - most of the original fairy tales were actually kinda mean-spirited before they got cleaned up and sanitized in more recent years.
Doom 2099 really kicked into high gear in its 3rd year when Warren Ellis took over the writing, but the first two years by John Francis Moore weren't too shabby, either.
doctor doom is one of my favorite villains in all of media, i do admit, though my first exposure was of that crappy ff4 movie version. he is a kind of villain i rarely see. ambitiuos, dangerous, yet with a code of honor, in the right hands. i really like the idea that the villain is only a villain by proxy. i prefer the idea that doom does care for his country and its citizens, and is incredibly protective of both. and if you oppose him or in any way theraten his people, he is then your enemy. it both gives him a sympathetic edge, him being greedy yet protective of what he has, yet also gives him a great weakness if a hero is desperate enough to exploit it. taht is a great villain, when the creators have that mindset. but i find him boring if they depict him as ruthless and hitler like. the image of him being able to walk the streets of his own country, and the people are silent not out of fear or terror, but deep seated respect, is a powerful thing i would say. ................. eh linkara, has there ever been a storyline where doom invited mutants to be citizens of his country? like when the mutant registration act came up, he realized he could gain the loyalty and support of many superhuman beings if he gave the safe haven. considering he has a gypsy background himself, he would have an understanding of being an outcast.
though admtiably i find him a little overpwoered at times. and that whole doom bot i find kinda stupid..... actually isn't he supposed to be a sorcerer too? why didn't he fall back on his magic when eh fought that cyborg?
Actually Lewis, Doom doesn't just want to take over the world because he thinks that he's better. One of the biggest things in Doom's life is trying to resurrect his deceased mother. By taking over the world, he's trying to prove something to himself. So that when he brings back his mother. she can come back proud of her son.
I quite like the shelves. It makes things a bit more appealing to the eye. I don't know if adding more would be overdoing it or not. :/ I guess I'd have to actually see it to make a comparison.
So, off topic, I've been wondering what your opinion is on the Batman: The Dark Knight New 52 comics. I started reading them and now I'm hooked. :)
I also stumbled across a copy of One More Day while at the comic book store the other day. I started looking through it to see its stupidity first hand, and the sales person that was helping me look for something said "No, just... just put it back." And then started suggesting other comics. XD
Oh and also Linkara Wylde is a proper Surname, for example Ozzy´s former guitarist Zakk Wylde is spelled like this and i´m pretty sure there are others too.
"Hey Linkara what is that brown thing on the shelf above the porcelain bunny? It's been bugging me the entire episode I've been trying to figure out what it is."
The Absent Grimoire, AKA the book about the Entity.
"Out of curiosity, how did Linkara get a Lord Vice helmet when he banished Vice to another planet (still in corporeal form)? Were there just extras on the spaceship?"
Yep, and various models of it. Naturally, Linkara gutted them of any electronics before he put it on his shelf to help ensure Vyce didn't try to transfer into them after the last incident.
"IS Blake's 7 any good? I'm curious because a lot of the fans of one of my favorite shows, Farscape, say they're pretty similar. On another note, the new background looks nice. I love that the porcelain bunny makes its return. The cybermat is cute too. Are you going to make cybermites now that that concept has spawned up?"
Blake's 7 is AWESOME. ^_^ It's definitely a precursor to shows like Farscape and Firefly - you can check out my review of a comic of it from last year.
Nah, not going to make Cybermites. Too tiny to work with and I still prefer Cybermats.
"I guess the 'Doom is isn't a racist' thing was in reference to the racist Doombot (how the hell did that get past quality control?) that was in Hudiln's terrible Black Panther run."
Pretty much, yeah. Was tempted to specifically reference it to point out that it was a Doombot. XD
Me and the rest of the Touhou Family are stil concerned about Nimue's behaviour. Xegito keeps insisting that it's Mureas' work and that we need to protect the Gunslinger and prepare for the incoming invasion, but I'm not as rash as her in jumping to conclusions. Both Cameron Phillips and the computer in Nitori's lab are working just fine, so the problem must be localized in your neighborhood. I could ask the Rosarios about it, but that family seriously creeps me out, and I doubt they would be of much help anyway.
In any case, as per your requests, we are not gonnna act until you have a clear idea of what's wrong with Nimue and why. In any case, I advise you to watch out for any strange behavior from her.
-Patchouli Knowledge, leader and den mother of the Touhou Family.
Don't forget Thunderbolts...the GOOD Thunderbolts who's premise was bad guys gone right.
Also, Dr. Doom kinda lost points for me when he, well...
***Spoilers for Children's Crusade*** Killed Cassie Lang and got away with it. Seriously! What the hell! He flat out murdered her, and only Scott Lang is trying to find a way to put an end to doom! Even her own team doesn't bother to avenge her! ***Spoilers for Children's Crusade***
Seriously, hate Dr. Doom after that dick move!
(The moment I'm talking about: http://i47.tinypic.com/2uruxpz.jpg )
You know, I'm starting to wonder, is there a Linkara 2099? Is he some guy from the future who was inspired by the 90 year old vids that he found on the net and started carrying on the legacy of reviewing bad comics (though not burning cause I'd think they'd all be digital by then)? Is he the one who's currently dealing with 1990's Kid? Is Channel Awesome a giant media corporation in this time that is also evil for the sole reason that this is a cyberpunk future? How many reboots has DC done by 2099? So many questions left unanswered for the next episode!
Anyway, great review, Linkara. That actually did look like an interesting book. Might need to check it out sometime.
Have to say that the costume at the end is sadly unimpressive. Doom should have something that invokes 'monarch of steel and blood' not 'generic doomsday villain'.
Anyway the execution of the comic also feels like it wastes the good premise. Latveria is... even more of an unhappy place, Doom returns with effectively nothing and is casually defeated and discarded. That's fine. But then convenient thing after convenient thing appears so he can survive the fight, get allies with nothing more than promises and a letdown new appearance. I'm not saying the basic idea is bad*, just that the execution wasn't what it could have been.
*Alternatively they could have had Doom forced out of power via some betrayal and he's been spending all these decades getting free of their trap and setting up his return to power.
I find villain-centric series to work best either when the characters are doing something comparatively noble (such as Doom here trying to win back his country), or when it's thoroughly a tragedy. By the latter, I mean the villain is treated as a tragic figure whose character flaw ultimately leads to their doom (pun intended). It's why I liked Death Note so much, despite finding Light to be unsympathetic.
Though also like Doom, Light was charismatic enough to keep our attention.
I talked about Punisher 2099 weeks back, having read the first issue and found it just as bad as Linkara stated. Coincidentally, Ravage 2099 #1 is the OTHER book from this line that I've read. It is also not all that good, and I await the review with baited breath.
First of all I should point out nice shelves. You got so much stuff to show off now, but for some reason I can't help but feel I should be looking for Waldo. Second there is actually a legitimate reason for gauntlet spikes. Joking aside i noticed many hero/villain struggles in comics often involve the hero grabbing the villain by the forearm and wrist area. Doom is pretty clever by putting the spikes there. Third not jumping to any conclusions but wouldn't Vyce's helmet give fans the impression that he is an alternate version of you?
I've read opn these a long time ago and what I read I'm still not sure if he's Doom or not!? But i do like the character Doom is one of the few examples of an Anti-Villain! A villain with heroic qualities! I do wish to see a movie adaptation of him that gets that part right someday maybe if Marvel/Disney ever reacquire the rights!?
I wish there was like a Captain America 2099 I can see that working some how like he got frozen again and was re awakened in this future where America is no longer the way he remembered it and he becomes a freedom fighter trying to restore it to the way it once was kind of thing!
Ravage 2099 I don't know much on as I never could wrap my head around it as I couldn't tell if he was all original or a remake of an old character that some how got past me!!
I think it is sort of a Batman beyond return of the joker deal where doom left a clone or something with his memories to reclaim latveria, man I like your reviews, perhaps an animated movie review could be interesting.
Sewing machine review Lewis! Like I've said before, Doom 2099 was one of the highlights of the 2099 line. Dr. Doom is a very versatile villain (arguably the most versatile villain in comic book history), and he does have a very sympathetic backstory, which is tempered by the fact that his arrogance and hubris is what led to his initial disfigurement and expulsion from university. The scene where Doom rebuffed a request to double check his new armor's systems because he's in a rush reminded me of the scene where Doom damaged his face further when he put his original armor's mask on before it cooled off.
Lewis, the other half of Tyger Wylde's conversation with Tyler Stone was in Spider-Man 2099 #2. Tyger Wylde was one of Alchemax's elite bounty hunters, just like Venture from Spider-Man 2099 #2 and 3. The markings on his face are supposed to be reminiscent of tiger stripes. As for his name, Wylde is probably his given name, and Alchemax probably had his first name legally changed to Tyger for trademark purposes. (You know, to sell Tyger Wylde action figures?)
Does anyone know if Marvel has collected Doom 2099 or put it on Comixology? It was a great series, with two awesome writers, John Francis Moore and later on Warren Ellis. I highly recommend trying to track down back copies if it is not available in a TPB or on Comixology.
They actually did introduce Cap in the 2099 Universe. Twice, in fact. One was the story I mentioned in my first comment about the evil robotic Cap that replaced Doom as President of the 2099 U.S. (in a storyline written by Warren Ellis, no less). And the other time was the real deal, this time showing up in the "2099: Manifest Destiny" story.
So you finally realized the one thing that was holding you back, the one thing that almost all great reviewers have. Shelves. with these, the time has become nigh, and soon you shall ascend to glory. Just be sure to add more swag as time goes by.
After reading a few of the comments here and Twitter and TGWTG all I can say is this... "Wylde Thing, you don't make my heart sing, You make everything...KEWL, Wylde Thing, Wylde Thing, I loathe you."
It's late when I write this okay, you want gold do it yourself.
But on the plus side, one down, fourteen to go for the next Top 15 Screw-Ups.
Oh I love this review... I was reading this book as it came out but I actually didn't read the first issue at the time I think I came in about issue 5 or 6. This really makes me want to track down the whole series and give it a re-read.
I think one of the greatest moments comes when he tavels back in time to the present, and attacks the Doctor Doom of that time.
90s Doom: "What you claim to be Doom but you struck me from behind, you have no Honor you are not Doom!"
2099 Doom: "The code of honor dictates our dealings with others, it says nothing about how we treat ourselves."
And then it leads to 90s Doom and Namor teaming up to fight 2099 Doom... AWESOME!
Doom is one of my all time favorite Marvel characters, I'm actually not a fan of the Fantastic Four at all... but you can bet if I see Doom on the cover of it or any other Marvel comic I'm bound to pick it up.
When you mentioned how awesome a Mr T vs Doom battle would be, I was kind of hoping you would take your copies of the Doom comic and the Mr T comic and start waving them around and banging them into each other like a kid playing with action figures.
Actually, there's something funny that happened with ads in my area for this video. One of the ads that's playing quite often for me is a PSA about wearing your seat belt while driving. It just so happens to use something very similar to "At Doom's Gate.
Somehow pop culture futures from the 90's are way funnier than pop culture futures from earlier decades. They're always saying VR is a huge thing in the future when it was never even a big thing in the present, we just kept thinking it would be. Then again maybe people who grew up in the 60's and 70's feel the same way about their made-up futures now.
And maybe I never noticed this but it seems like fanciful futures from earlier decades never thought they needed to make up futuristic slang while everything from the 90's did. Hence "freestyle" as a laughable term for hacking, whereas in Phantom 2040 hackers are "skaters," and I guess hacking is called skating. Back when the average person was just starting to become computer literate and hackers were even more of a mythical beast than they are now.
Interesting. A 2099 comic in this "Month" series that actually does something with its premise besides waste it almost completely. It's nice to see one that breaks from what we think the pattern is going to be. Of course, it does make me wonder what you'll say about Ravage 2099, but that's for next week.
I like the shelves behind you. It's a nice addition. I know it's kind of ass-ish of me to be like this, but I'd have to actually see what your set would look like with the four book cases behind you before trying to judge. I've just never been very good at imagining things like that.
First SIERRA/Jareis, now Reed Richards/Doom in drag?! Why are you giving the slash fic writers material!? Gah, everybody betrayed me, Im fed up with this world!
Erm.... the Hanged man is an indicator that some-one is at a crossroad in their life and that a decision needs to be made. It's also about a change in internal perspective and "letting go". it is NOT about "DANGUR!!" (sorry. it's a pet peeve of mine when people screw up Tarot card meanings)
OH NO! SHELVES!!!! THIS SHOW IS FALLING APPAAAAAAART!!!
Oh yeah. And get another bookcase. because I need one but I don't have room right now so you might as well get it instead.
Spidey 2099 and Doom 2099 are probably the best of the series. I always loved the way Doom named each issue after a literary or poetic quote they would leave at the end like they did with this first issue. Thanks for the review, even though it isn't usually your policy to showcase good comics!
Afternoon Linkara. I have been a fan of the show for several years now and I'm writing in to express my support of the show. I am an aspiring writer and your show has helped me to know what to do and what not to do when working on my stories. I just want to write about how much you've taught me and how greatful I am. If you ever have the time I recommened you go and see Geekvolution which is a channelon youtube. The webmaster, Captain Logan does great analyis videos on superhero movies known as Superhero Rewind. Also he is a very big Star Trek fan and you should get together. Lastly he is working on a project known as Spawn Year. It started The first day of January this year and in it Captain Logan is forced to review one Spawn related item a day or be buried with all the remaing items should he fail. Currently he is reviewing the Spawn animated series and is on season 3. I recommend you start at day 1. I've been enjoying it since the start and I think you will also.
To tell you the truth Linkara, I liked it better when you zoomed out at the end then the close up. You really get to see the shelves, plus I felt like you were a little too close the camera.
Also 2090's Kyd is the Kewlyst addytyon to your cast ever! (Not sure if I got that last sentence correct, I was never very good at that time period's Grammar.)
Excellent review, and nice shelves. Sad there's no lamp.
I always liked Doom 2099, which along with Spider-Man 2099, were the bedrock of the 2099 universe. Both had strong storylines and sub-plots that built upon themselves and showed actual progress as time passed.
So looking forward to the coming Ravaging!

Sorry, I know this is off topic, but it's so gorram stupid: http://www.news.com.au/world-news/superhero-games-banned-in-us-pre-school-after-childrens-imaginations-become-dangerously-overactive/story-fndir2ev-1226648231636
Loving the new backdrop, Linkara. As a Power Rangers fan, I am especially fond of your Legacy Morpher (having just gotten one myself). The porcelain and the Doctor Hat. Nice. Big fan of your work. Please keep it up. You're part of the reason I want to go into story writing.
I was all for you putting shelves behind you, but, man, the camera feels a too close. I know it's probably due to the height of the shelves (or maybe you were just trying to obstruct them for a reveal), but it still bugs me.
I'm old enough to remember when floppy discs were cutting edge technology. I can still remember our first computer-the OS was Windows 3, and it didn't have a mouse. No Internet access, and the only games on it were the usual(solitaire, hearts, Minesweeper). We had the very first SIMs, MYST Version 1, and an adventure game that was all text. So the idea of there being a resurgence in the 2080s is pretty funny.
*Looks at next week's episode* Ravage 2099? They gave one of Soundwave's cassettes his own comic? AND in the future? I'm probably wrong on that, but hey, it's the first thing that comes to mind with that particular name.
Nice Legacy Morpher there, by the way. I keep the Triceratops coin in mine, though. I've also got the Legacy Megazord.
Out of curiosity (and off topic), might you consider coming to Boston one year, either for ComicCon or Anime Boston? I'd love to go to one of your live shows, but at this time, I've not the money to travel.
Does the "Henry V" quote at the end of the comic have any sort of significance in future issues? Or is this the authors referencing the medium of sequential art? Because that scene in "Henry V" is all about the limitations of theatre (as in, wouldn't it be great if we could use an entire kingdom to stage our play, but we only have this little theatre, so use your imagination). Basically, it seemed really out of place with the rest of the comic.
"Does the "Henry V" quote at the end of the comic have any sort of significance in future issues? Or is this the authors referencing the medium of sequential art? Probably more a "let's put in a fancy-pants Shakespeare quote to make us sound cooler." XD
Thoughts while watching the video: When the Doom music played over the title card, I got super hyped and pumped and started flailing my arms about because Doom is an awesome game. Also, I too would love to see Mr. T vs. Dr. Doom. That would be pure awesome. "Rap Freestyle or Breakdancing Freestyle" Swimming Freestyle? And, as I watched you review the comic, I found myself coming to the conclusion that it was good as well. Nice review Linkara--and I was not expecting the Trinity Gun joke to go the direction it did. Nice.
A bit behind but just a simple one to get to the Ravage review: loved the "Starbucks and Wal-Mart joke" and the usage of the Brigadeer in the "be quiet" bit...and (20)90s Kid weird "sewing machine" response. Fun episode. (have to catch up, with vacation prep last week I didn't get the chance to see this until now)
There's a chain of media stores most popular throughout central/mountain US called Hastings. I don't know if it's an exec there, or how they do comics, but I swear someone there in charge of comics at either the local or regional level watches this show. Last time I went there, the 25th, there were about ten or so different issues of Doom 2099 in the top areas, (not the back-issue cabinets below.) I also picked up a few US-1 issues that were displayed next to the new releases.
Oh, this is the only 2099 comic review that made me want to buy the comic. As for the back ground shelf, it isn't that distracting and I'm glad that the dangerous items have been gutted or disarmed. I was worried when I noticed them for the first time. It looks like Tiger Wylde got spliced . Wow, now that You've mentioned it and I started thinking it, Dr.Doom Vs Mr. T concept would make good fanart
The shelves are cool, I like how they look like the speakers from the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy tv series (the ones that play the songs of the band whose ship the guys steal and whose lead singer is spending a year dead for tax purposes.
Doom seems cool, I'm very much a fan of the amoral monsters who happen to be on the good side and I guess a good old fashioned villain really would bring out the heroes in a corrupt corporate age.
Wow, this comic is actually awesome! I mean, it's Doctor Doom in 2099, attempting to retake control of Latveria.
Anyway, great review. Actually, loved the shelves with trophies and various books. Say, Linkara, you still considering putting a "wall of shame" for the worst comics featured on the show?
Love the new look of the room! Shows off the many victories you have gotten, Lewis. Just be careful with Mechakara’s hand there. All in all, keep it up.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I noticed Deadpool was created by Rob Liefeld. That really doesn’t matter, right? He’s still hilarious. Case in point: http://m7781.deviantart.com/art/the-shining-x-deadpool-328276462
P.S. Nice use of ID Software’s theme to Doom!
well linkara mentions about Leifield and deadpool in previous video and technically leifield didnt really create him
ReplyDeleteWait a second! This is like Live and Let Die! Tiger is Dr. Kananga, Fortune is Solitaire, That bad Mohawk guy might as well be Tee-Hee, and Vox must be Baron Samandi. What does that make Doom? James Bond?
ReplyDeleteTell me if you did noticed that too, Lewis?
Wylde is a real last name. So is Wilde. (See: Oscar Wilde)
ReplyDeleteProps for the the Doom theme though.

ReplyDeleteMaybe both depictions of Doom in Latveria are accurate and Doom has mood swings which decide how he treats his people, "Attention citizens of Latveria, your lord and master Doctor Doom is pissed off today please be advised that he doesn't care about you and will more than likely vaporize you if you so much as get within 12 feet of him today.
ReplyDeleteGood review though
Nice to see the room change. Looks cool.
ReplyDeleteWas a good review, and yeah, Doom is one of those characters who, despite being a villain, can hold a title role as the "hero" because of how charismatic (and hammy) he is.
ReplyDeleteThese...let's call them flaps on his armor (under the belt) look like metal shorts on the cover. o_O
ReplyDeleteNow THAT'S an intriguing premise!
ReplyDeleteBut I'm kinda disappointed Wylde's not called "Tygar Wylde"...
Linkara, how could you not remember Oscar Wilde?
ReplyDeleteAnd you call yourself an English major.
Tsk, tsk.
So, after reading all this technobabble, I have a whole new appreciation for "nanomachines".
ReplyDelete>Also, I noticed Deadpool was created by Rob Liefeld.
ReplyDeleteLiefeld may have created him, but Fabian Nicieza and Joe Kelly are the ones who actually made Deadpool into Deadpool.

ReplyDeleteI second on putting a fourth shelf behind you.
ReplyDeleteI gotta say, i'm rather surprised that no rabid fans have posted to say that putting shelves on the walls behind you has "RUINED AT4W FOREVER!!!!11!", or something to that effect.
I thought you were going to do a "Juggernaut Bitch" reference instead of "Goddamn Batman"
ReplyDeleteFeels kind of awesome for I remember asking for Porcelain Bunny and behold it is on the shelf. Though probably a bunch of other people asked too.
ReplyDeleteHey Lewis do you know which item on the shelf was the most requested I'm curious?
An important detail not mentioned in this video is that Gipsy lady is not just a member of Doom's tribe. She's a descendant of Boris, Doctor Doom's most loyal servant, who knew Doom's parents, and is the only man Doom truly trusts as a friend.
ReplyDeletehttp://marvel.com/universe/Boris
Dang... Now I'm curious about the rest of this run! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSo Doom sort of like CM Punk's Straight Edge heal gimmick? Knowing how much punk comic book i'm not surprised. I mean who straight edge being meaning he is better then you.
ReplyDeleteOh god stop fueling slash fiction Linkara. There is to much of it out there anyway.
Yeah this was a good book and I'm glad it holds up over the years. I won't spoil what happens later in the series I wasn't to happy with everything.
Hey, you DID manage to slip in a Doom (the comic) reference in! THAT must be good.
ReplyDeleteNow that's one metal cover!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, I'd print that on an album
Also, I know you told us not to name out examples of good series with a villain lead, but you maw have provided us with an excellent example right in the ending credits, without even realizing it
Invader ZIM, the proof that you CAN make a racist, genocidal sociopath lovable
So, Linkara's an Obelisk? Interesting.
ReplyDeleteHey Linkara what is that brown thing on the shelf above the porcelain bunny? It's been bugging me the entire episode I've been trying to figure out what it is.
ReplyDeleteAnd really looking forward to next week.
Great review as always
The shelf is a bit distracting. I think it's a good idea to have it, just going to take some getting used to.
ReplyDeleteI was going to mention Gene Wilder, but Lostshadows beat me to it. Also, Wyld is both a real last name and one of the craters in the moon. Maybe that's where the name came from?
ReplyDeleteAs a fan of Doctor Doom, i gotta say, there are quite a few comics that either show him as a competent and(sorta) caring leader for his nation, even the ones who don't usually mention that Latveria was worse off before he became it's ruler.

ReplyDeleteYou have any plans of ever looking at any other VillainProtagonist comics?
Out of curiosity, how did Linkara get a Lord Vice helmet when he banished Vice to another planet (still in corporeal form)? Were there just extras on the spaceship?
ReplyDeleteIS Blake's 7 any good? I'm curious because a lot of the fans of one of my favorite shows, Farscape, say they're pretty similar. On another note, the new background looks nice. I love that the porcelain bunny makes its return. The cybermat is cute too. Are you going to make cybermites now that that concept has spawned up?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one to notice that you said "room" instead of "rum"?
ReplyDeleteI guess the 'Doom is isn't a racist' thing was in reference to the racist Doombot (how the hell did that get past quality control?) that was in Hudiln's terrible Black Panther run.
ReplyDeleteThis comic looks interesting. I always like when you do review stuff that is rather good it keeps your show fresh if the comic doesn´t suck every week.
ReplyDeleteAlso i think the shelves look great behind the couch.
ReplyDeleteDoom 2099 really kicked into high gear in its 3rd year when Warren Ellis took over the writing, but the first two years by John Francis Moore weren't too shabby, either.
Concerning the adblocker fiasco, you might want to look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPxc0IDydso
ReplyDeletedoctor doom is one of my favorite villains in all of media, i do admit, though my first exposure was of that crappy ff4 movie version.
ReplyDeletehe is a kind of villain i rarely see. ambitiuos, dangerous, yet with a code of honor, in the right hands. i really like the idea that the villain is only a villain by proxy. i prefer the idea that doom does care for his country and its citizens, and is incredibly protective of both. and if you oppose him or in any way theraten his people, he is then your enemy. it both gives him a sympathetic edge, him being greedy yet protective of what he has, yet also gives him a great weakness if a hero is desperate enough to exploit it.
taht is a great villain, when the creators have that mindset. but i find him boring if they depict him as ruthless and hitler like. the image of him being able to walk the streets of his own country, and the people are silent not out of fear or terror, but deep seated respect, is a powerful thing i would say.
................. eh linkara, has there ever been a storyline where doom invited mutants to be citizens of his country? like when the mutant registration act came up, he realized he could gain the loyalty and support of many superhuman beings if he gave the safe haven. considering he has a gypsy background himself, he would have an understanding of being an outcast.
though admtiably i find him a little overpwoered at times. and that whole doom bot i find kinda stupid..... actually isn't he supposed to be a sorcerer too? why didn't he fall back on his magic when eh fought that cyborg?
Actually Lewis, Doom doesn't just want to take over the world because he thinks that he's better. One of the biggest things in Doom's life is trying to resurrect his deceased mother. By taking over the world, he's trying to prove something to himself. So that when he brings back his mother. she can come back proud of her son.
ReplyDeleteAlso, check this out for something less mean spirited: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ix7N5iMHP78
ReplyDeleteI quite like the shelves. It makes things a bit more appealing to the eye. I don't know if adding more would be overdoing it or not. :/ I guess I'd have to actually see it to make a comparison.
ReplyDeleteSo, off topic, I've been wondering what your opinion is on the Batman: The Dark Knight New 52 comics.
ReplyDeleteThe shelves behind your couch could have some DVD's on them. Just suggesting.
ReplyDelete"Hey Linkara what is that brown thing on the shelf above the porcelain bunny? It's been bugging me the entire episode I've been trying to figure out what it is."
ReplyDeleteThe Absent Grimoire, AKA the book about the Entity.
"Out of curiosity, how did Linkara get a Lord Vice helmet when he banished Vice to another planet (still in corporeal form)? Were there just extras on the spaceship?"
ReplyDeleteYep, and various models of it.
ReplyDeleteBlake's 7 is AWESOME. ^_^ It's definitely a precursor to shows like Farscape and Firefly - you can check out my review of a comic of it from last year.
Nah, not going to make Cybermites. Too tiny to work with and I still prefer Cybermats.

ReplyDelete"I guess the 'Doom is isn't a racist' thing was in reference to the racist Doombot (how the hell did that get past quality control?) that was in Hudiln's terrible Black Panther run."
ReplyDeletePretty much, yeah. Was tempted to specifically reference it to point out that it was a Doombot. XD
"Concerning the adblocker fiasco, you might want to look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPxc0IDydso"
ReplyDeleteThere is no fiasco and if you want to comment on adblocker-related stuff, keep it in the "Please Let the Ads Play" comments section.
Dear Linkara:
ReplyDeleteMe and the rest of the Touhou Family are stil concerned about Nimue's behaviour.
Rule (9) must be strictly interpreted!!!
DeleteDon't forget Thunderbolts...the GOOD Thunderbolts who's premise was bad guys gone right.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Dr. Doom kinda lost points for me when he, well...
***Spoilers for Children's Crusade***
Killed Cassie Lang and got away with it.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, great review, Linkara. That actually did look like an interesting book. Might need to check it out sometime.
Have to say that the costume at the end is sadly unimpressive. Doom should have something that invokes 'monarch of steel and blood' not 'generic doomsday villain'.
ReplyDeleteAnyway the execution of the comic also feels like it wastes the good premise.
ReplyDeleteThough also like Doom, Light was charismatic enough to keep our attention.
ReplyDeleteI've read opn these a long time ago and what I read I'm still not sure if he's Doom or not!? But i do like the character Doom is one of the few examples of an Anti-Villain! A villain with heroic qualities!
ReplyDeleteI do wish to see a movie adaptation of him that gets that part right someday maybe if Marvel/Disney ever reacquire the rights!?
ReplyDeleteSewing machine review Lewis!
ReplyDeleteLewis, the other half of Tyger Wylde's conversation with Tyler Stone was in Spider-Man 2099 #2.
This was more fun than I thought it would be. More good comic here and there wouldn't hurt.
ReplyDeleteI liked how Future 90s Kid(Kyd?) actually had a smart moment. Why? Not sure but it was fun.
Please tell me you are going to do One Nation Under Doom someday.
ReplyDeleteI was pretty amazed at how much I liked this comic.
ReplyDeleteAlso, love the stuff behind you and the review was really funny.
'What 90s kid logo?' maybe it's the future glasses.
@boooratt
ReplyDeleteThey actually did introduce Cap in the 2099 Universe.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading a few of the comments here and Twitter and TGWTG all I can say is this...
ReplyDelete"Wylde Thing, you don't make my heart sing,
You make everything...KEWL, Wylde Thing,
Wylde Thing, I loathe you."
It's late when I write this okay, you want gold do it yourself.
But on the plus side, one down, fourteen to go for the next Top 15 Screw-Ups.
Actually the gauntlet spikes are kinda' practical. Hit someone upside the face with those and it'll leave a nasty mark.
ReplyDeleteOh I love this review... I was reading this book as it came out but I actually didn't read the first issue at the time I think I came in about issue 5 or 6. This really makes me want to track down the whole series and give it a re-read.
ReplyDeleteI think one of the greatest moments comes when he tavels back in time to the present, and attacks the Doctor Doom of that time.
ReplyDeleteActually, there's something funny that happened with ads in my area for this video. One of the ads that's playing quite often for me is a PSA about wearing your seat belt while driving. It just so happens to use something very similar to "At Doom's Gate.
ReplyDeleteSomehow pop culture futures from the 90's are way funnier than pop culture futures from earlier decades. They're always saying VR is a huge thing in the future when it was never even a big thing in the present, we just kept thinking it would be. Then again maybe people who grew up in the 60's and 70's feel the same way about their made-up futures now.
ReplyDeleteAnd maybe I never noticed this but it seems like fanciful futures from earlier decades never thought they needed to make up futuristic slang while everything from the 90's did. Hence "freestyle" as a laughable term for hacking, whereas in Phantom 2040 hackers are "skaters," and I guess hacking is called skating. Back when the average person was just starting to become computer literate and hackers were even more of a mythical beast than they are now.
Awesome episode. Gotta love Doom.
ReplyDeleteAnd definitely get a 4th bookshelves. It looks odd with the gaps.... or maybe that's just my OCD talking.
Also that Invader Zim reference at the end of the credits made me smile. :D
Interesting. A 2099 comic in this "Month" series that actually does something with its premise besides waste it almost completely. It's nice to see one that breaks from what we think the pattern is going to be. Of course, it does make me wonder what you'll say about Ravage 2099, but that's for next week.
ReplyDeleteI like the shelves behind you. It's a nice addition. I know it's kind of ass-ish of me to be like this, but I'd have to actually see what your set would look like with the four book cases behind you before trying to judge. I've just never been very good at imagining things like that.
I'd definitely recommend filling your back wall with shelves. It will make the futon portions of the video feel more professional.
ReplyDeleteFirst SIERRA/Jareis, now Reed Richards/Doom in drag?! Why are you giving the slash fic writers material!? Gah, everybody betrayed me, Im fed up with this world!
ReplyDelete((Sorry I can't write in Tommy Wiseau's accent))
Erm.... the Hanged man is an indicator that some-one is at a crossroad in their life and that a decision needs to be made. It's also about a change in internal perspective and "letting go". it is NOT about "DANGUR!!"
ReplyDelete(sorry. it's a pet peeve of mine when people screw up Tarot card meanings)
OH NO!
ReplyDeleteNothri
Afternoon Linkara.
ReplyDeleteI have been a fan of the show for several years now and I'm writing in to express my support of the show.
Man, this comic was totally kleenex!
ReplyDeleteTo tell you the truth Linkara, I liked it better when you zoomed out at the end then the close up. You really get to see the shelves, plus I felt like you were a little too close the camera.
ReplyDeleteAlso 2090's Kyd is the Kewlyst addytyon to your cast ever! (Not sure if I got that last sentence correct, I was never very good at that time period's Grammar.)
Excellent review, and nice shelves. Sad there's no lamp.
ReplyDeleteI always liked Doom 2099, which along with Spider-Man 2099, were the bedrock of the 2099 universe.

ReplyDeleteLove the shelves.
Loving the new backdrop, Linkara. As a Power Rangers fan, I am especially fond of your Legacy Morpher (having just gotten one myself). The porcelain and the Doctor Hat. Nice.
ReplyDeleteBig fan of your work. Please keep it up. You're part of the reason I want to go into story writing.
I was all for you putting shelves behind you, but, man, the camera feels a too close. I know it's probably due to the height of the shelves (or maybe you were just trying to obstruct them for a reveal), but it still bugs me.
ReplyDeleteI'm old enough to remember when floppy discs were cutting edge technology.
ReplyDelete*Looks at next week's episode* Ravage 2099? They gave one of Soundwave's cassettes his own comic? AND in the future? I'm probably wrong on that, but hey, it's the first thing that comes to mind with that particular name.
ReplyDeleteNice Legacy Morpher there, by the way.
ReplyDelete"Does the "Henry V" quote at the end of the comic have any sort of significance in future issues? Or is this the authors referencing the medium of sequential art? ReplyDeleteProbably more a "let's put in a fancy-pants Shakespeare quote to make us sound cooler." XD
Thoughts while watching the video:
ReplyDeleteWhen the Doom music played over the title card, I got super hyped and pumped and started flailing my arms about because Doom is an awesome game.
Nice.
A fourth shelf would look good only problem is I can watch the older videos without thinking about the shelf...
ReplyDeleteVery Important Questions I just now thought of:
ReplyDelete1.Is there still an Office Max in the year 2099? After all, if Doom is the hero of his series, he's going to need a rubber band ball!
2. Does he gaze upon anyone's radiant beauty and despair?
A bit behind but just a simple one to get to the Ravage review: loved the "Starbucks and Wal-Mart joke" and the usage of the Brigadeer in the "be quiet" bit...and (20)90s Kid weird "sewing machine" response. Fun episode. (have to catch up, with vacation prep last week I didn't get the chance to see this until now)
ReplyDeleteThere's a chain of media stores most popular throughout central/mountain US called Hastings.
ReplyDeleteOh, this is the only 2099 comic review that made me want to buy the comic. As for the back ground shelf, it isn't that distracting and I'm glad that the dangerous items have been gutted or disarmed. I was worried when I noticed them for the first time. It looks like Tiger Wylde got spliced .
ReplyDeleteWow, now that You've mentioned it and I started thinking it, Dr.Doom Vs Mr. T concept would make good fanart
The shelves are cool, I like how they look like the speakers from the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy tv series (the ones that play the songs of the band whose ship the guys steal and whose lead singer is spending a year dead for tax purposes.
ReplyDeleteDoom seems cool, I'm very much a fan of the amoral monsters who happen to be on the good side and I guess a good old fashioned villain really would bring out the heroes in a corrupt corporate age.
Gordon: That would be Disaster Area, with lead singer Hotblack Desiato.
ReplyDelete...Damn I'm a geek.
Wow, this comic is actually awesome! I mean, it's Doctor Doom in 2099, attempting to retake control of Latveria.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, great review. Actually, loved the shelves with trophies and various books. Say, Linkara, you still considering putting a "wall of shame" for the worst comics featured on the show?
