«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 362 of 362Honestly Linkara, you are much less calm than I would be over this issue. The way some people think they are entitled to ad-free videos makes me rage, especially after reading some of the comments on the TGWTG site.
Seriously, these people who get to watch your videos for free think that watching a 30 second commercial is too much to ask. It's literally giving you money for free! Heck they can mute the ad and surf reddit or something while it plays.
So congrats to you for coming out a calm video like this where you state the facts. I wish you luck in continuing your work.
"Wasn't me personally, but I applaud them anyway.
I don't want my videos on youtube."
Wow... way to make a guy feel guilty, Lewis. Guess I'll just delete that playlist.
i had a quick question. i use an ipad, its program allows me to skip ahead to the end of the commercials. as in i can skip to the last 5 seconds but not skip it all together. does that still count as watching the commercial, or do i have to let the whole thing play. if you could shoot me a quirk answer i would be glad to do whatever you recommend. thanks!
"Wow... way to make a guy feel guilty, Lewis. Guess I'll just delete that playlist."
Well, I'm certainly not trying to make you feel guilty. That having been said, the reason I don't actively try to stop it is because usually those channels that uploaded our videos are back up in a week under a new name. XD

I have no idea, sorry to say. ^^;

I have an idea on how to deal with the ad issue (you may have seen me tell you about this on YouTube and Twitter). How about, for those who can't stand ads and won't change their minds about it no matter what, a paid subcription option, and, for those who just want their videos for free and don't care about the ads, regular videos with ads?
Quick question:
Dont use an adblocker but every once in a while (around once or twice a month), especially in the middle of the video, it will fade to black to the ad, but go straight back to the video, im asuming that doesnt count towards ad revenue for u. Is that then a blip issue or an issue with my IP?
MY GOD. I just looked at the comments section on TGWTG site. Why are people so bunged up on the issue of having to watch 30-second ads? If it slows down the video, fine. But people are talking about how its not our responsibility to provide income. Talk about armchair quarterbacking. Furthermore, you explaianed your point in a calm, polite and tolerant manner. And yet people think you live some kind of life of luxary and should be kissing the asses of everybody who watches your videos.
THIS IS WHAT I HATE ABOUT THE INTERNET: IT GIVES THE PETTIEST ASPECTS OF A PERSON A PLATFORM!
I will tell my cousin to stop using adblock next time we watch one of your reviews which isn't often. I watch it more on my own with ads. But he should know anyway.
I know you've been getting A LOT of flack for making this video from a bunch of self-entitled twats, but just know that there are people out there like me that support what you do 100%! Haters be damned!!
No.
Find another revenue model. I suggest talking to Blip (or finding an alternative) about direct payments. I have no problem paying for what I enjoy--I pay for Pandora One, I have given money to everyone from Devil's Panties to xkcd, I belong to my local Public Radio station. I just hate ads.
I watch your videos for fun. If I have to sit through ads, I won't enjoy them and thus won't watch them. Either way you get nada. Contrariwise, if Blip (or alternative) offered a $35/year subscription (like Pandora) I'd do it instantly. Hell, get on Hulu--I might actually join their pay service if you did.
OMG ... I am so sorry that you have fallen onto such hard times that you have been reduced to begging for money. I am sure that you have been paying far too much in royalties of other peoples works,70% or so, of which your videos consist. You my friend are off my white list... :p
I AM glad that you mentioned the iPad app not playing ads correctly. They play on Brad's stuff, but not yours or Doug's for some reason. Go fig.
I know that you previously said that you like for people to read the comments before we write one, ourselves. But there are 208 comments at the time of writing this, and I have limited time right now. That being said, hopefully you or someone else can point me to a link to let Blip know that ads don't play correctly on their app and they need to fix it. They also need to fix a LOT of episodes that simply don't play - very frustrating.
I would watch your show on my computer, but it brings my broken-down, 2005 MBPro to about 84˚C - not a very doable temperature. So on my iPad it shall remain, sadly.
I've been watching AT4W for 3 or 4 years now, and I love it. Hey, you got me into comics, really. I am always glad to support you with watching a few simple ads. Just let me know who to contact, so I can do so without cooking my computer...
Someone who profits off ad revenue telling to avoid watching the ads yet he can still profit is a dick move. You show no respect to the people who PAY him.
Hey I left a comment on your YouTube appeal but I'll reiterate here.
"Hi Linkara. I admit to using AdBlockers for Blip, ever since I found one which would work to stop not the ads in the start and mid-roll . . .
But I use it to stop the banner popups which obscure part of the review and can't be removed. Yes, they do often have a tiny (X) button in them, but more often than not I've found it nigh impossible to hit it without activating the ad . . . and causing me to need to reload the video.
These are the ads I want to block, specifically as for your review videos, it's very important to see the whole of the screen. Having the bottom third vanish behind a popup ad meant I had to stop the video, hunt down the (X) and properly stop it, then scroll back. Often this meant it would pop up again, and . . . well I hope you see where that goes.
I realize you are doing this as a full time job, much like your friends on Channel Awesome. I wish I had the screen presence to do similar. I'll keep an eye out for the DVD."
By the way, you're one of the two people I need to figure out ways of supporting other than the ads. Supporting SFDebris is next, because that guy has a great mind and a talent for wordplay.
Hey Linkara,
I was actually thinking about getting ad blocker, mostly because I was getting sick of seeing the same ad over and over again. In light of your video here, and because I did not realize you just did this as your main source of income, I will not be getting ad blocker mostly do to the fact that I like you, Brad, Spoony, the walker Brothers, James Rolf and whoever else pours their heart into their work like you guys do. So because I like you, I will just put up with the ads for 30 seconds. I also plan on supporting your site because I really want to but a Young bloods disease awareness shirt, as well as the DVD set with all new material. Thank you so much for making me laugh Lewis, I've really grown to love this show. You have also taught me a ton about comic books that I would have otherwise never known so thanks for that knowledge as well. I will continue to support the show as long as you're making it. Thanks again man.
"OMG ... I am so sorry that you have fallen onto such hard times that you have been reduced to begging for money. I am sure that you have been paying far too much in royalties of other peoples works,70% or so, of which your videos consist. You my friend are off my white list... :p"
OMG ... I am so sorry that you failed to actually watch the video and therefore didn't notice that at no point in said video did I ever ASK PEOPLE FOR MONEY. Clearly your time has just been so busy making completely idiotic posts, of which 100% of your posts so far have been. You, my friend, are off my list of people who aren't stupid. :p
Sorry for another coment, just wanted to clarify my previous coment. I am talking about you saying people shoulod mute the ads and not watch them. These people with adsare paying you, telling people not to watch then while you still get money is pretty selfish.
BTW, you really should react to people's complains in youtube comment section.

Perhaps, but at the same time people can mute ads on TV, as well. It was really just a way to further explain why the 30 seconds really wasn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things.
As for youtube, I felt like the attempts at discussing things there wasn't really going anywhere. Hell, was half-tempted to disable comments altogether on the video on youtube, buuut hey, it's no skin off my back if they want to talk or argue about the issues there.
May I ask a serious question? I know that AT4W is your source of income & that you love doing it...but what are you going to do when people eventually stop watching your show (& internet reviewer shows in general)? I hate coming off as doomsayer but I'm genuinely worried about you. I mean nothing lasts forever & I have been encountering more & more people (some of which are good friends of mine) who don't like internet reviewers anymore.
So I ask again: What are you going to do when the Reviewer Bubble bursts & when/If AT4W ends? If it helps, I highly suggest going into the comic industry (preferably becoming an editor at DC). You love the DC universe so much & have so much knowledge on how it's characters work, that I think DC Comics needs people like you to save it by becoming one of it's editors to help writers stay on track with instead of derailing them like current editors at DC.

I have a few ideas, mostly in the self-publishing arena. I could certainly keep up reviewing in DVD form if the DVDs are successful or even move into reviewing in book form. Otherwise becoming more of a comics journalist, while not my favorite option, is a possibility. One does not just "become" an editor at DC or Marvel, unfortunately (although it sometimes feels that way).
Lewis, is your argument about how it's not fair to punish you for the system really fair? You choose to work with this system.
Also, somne people are upset over your presentation. That you present yourself as tired, grumpy, exhausted, and upset. That you don't smile throughout it (maybe once or twice) but instead whine and complain about how you are not getting money.
As someone who lives as far away as is humanly possible, there's no point in me enabling ads so i've chucked a few dollars your way and hopefully it will help out. Yay, Paypal!
"As someone who lives as far away as is humanly possible, there's no point in me enabling ads so i've chucked a few dollars your way and hopefully it will help out. Yay, Paypal!"
And it's certainly most appreciated!
Likewise, to anyone who has donated when you certainly didn't have to, thank you very much and thanks for watching! ^_^
Sorry for another coment, but you really should take back your advice. It is hypocritical and given that it's one o the reasons compannies are skeptical against internet ads, it's onnly gonna hurt you in the long term. MAybe if you said it differently, but it reall comes of ugly.

A review of Linkara.
Thanks for telling me I could white-list sites, I had no idea you could do that! AT4W and channel awesome white-listed now. Thanks.

This guy really is on your case Lewis. Are you going to call him out for this?
I think a compromise is whitelisting blip, so that in other sites, only the blip video would have the ads playing. Tried it on SF Debris' site and it works!
Actually I saw a lot of negative comments on the video, not just about the Ads but from several of the people who utterly despise you. I'm not trying to bring attention to them (which was pretty much their point) ,but Im just pointing out how even when you're trying to calmly explain a point, you can still get a lot of haters.
Also isn't not supporting a product became of advertising stupid? Because a lot of websites need to gain money from advertisements from other companies to keep going. You even said it in the video since TV commercials and movie trailers almost always use them. I mean wow! When did they suddenly turn into Ask that Guy with the Hat?
Thank you so much! I actually didn't understand how the system works, so thank you for explaining everything. I really do appreciate your show and I enjoy watching it (mostly because I really can't stand profanity, and yours is milder and more tolerable, and I feel like I learn things when I watch your show). I have disabled adblock for your site, although sometimes the ads don't play the first time and I have to reload it.
Dude, I had no idea that you were a Freeman's Mind fan. I've been following the show for 5 years now, I even I thought it was an obscure show on the internet. It's nice to know that he finally gets the attention he deserves after so long.
Now if we can only hire DCompose, then everything would be right in the world.
Lewis, will you provide some form of downloading de DVD or similar. Because I live in Argentina, Blip does not give me any ad on your videos and customs here are terrible. But if I can buy the DVD and download it's content then I don't need to pay any extra illegitimate custom tax. Thanks.
"Also, somne people are upset over your presentation. That you present yourself as tired, grumpy, exhausted, and upset. That you don't smile throughout it (maybe once or twice) but instead whine and complain about how you are not getting money."
I'm speaking calmly, directly, and not condescendingly. I explain the facts about how this works and how adblocking affects the ad revenue. When am I WHINING about it? And I smile at the appropriate moments, especially considering this is a video meant to be serious.
"Damn Linkara you pissed off your haters even more now"
Meh. Let 'em have their opinion.
"This guy really is on your case Lewis. Are you going to call him out for this?"
What would be the point?
Because poor literacy is for trolls
Okay I swear to god, we need to have our own version of David Letterman's Mean Celebrity Tweets with Internet reviewers.
Also (and sorry for my horrible grammar, my keyboard sucks), if you can't pay your rent due to this and you are short on money, then why are you trying to live off of these ad-payments in the first place?
And please Linkara, watch these video responces. Don't you hope that, as unrealistic as it would be, some writers would watch your show and did re-think their decisions?
"Also (and sorry for my horrible grammar, my keyboard sucks), if you can't pay your rent due to this and you are short on money, then why are you trying to live off of these ad-payments in the first place?"
I still AM capable of living off of them. My fear, however, is that more and more people would use adblock without realizing how it was affecting us. This video informed them and told them how it worked. Simple as that. And considering the amount of people who have commented and said that they didn't realize that was how it worked, I think it was worth it.
Like many others, I used to get the ads but now they come once in a blue moon and nearly never on the midrolls. (Ah, I would love to get something akin to the Starbursts ones again...) I guess that's due to living on the other side of the globe in Singapore. I guess I'll buy your DVDs and would be incredibly grateful if they came in download format as well.
I want to watch the Blip ads and support you show, but for some reason I'm not getting them. I've even gone as far as un-installing my ad and script blockers to be sure but I still don't even get the bumpers. Either my ISP is blocking the ads for some inconceivable reason or Blip isn't providing them to people in certain regions (I live in Canada, by the way).
Boy, after glancing through the comments on here and at TGWTG site(I don't dare look on Youtube, it's a Troll Haven) I gotta say-some people are really taking this way, way too personally.
"When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him".
I watched the video again, thinking maybe I missed something. Was Linkara being petty, or whining like some were saying?
Gee, no! The only thing I noticed was his slight Scandahoovian accent.
Oh, and for those that say to him "Get a 'real' job", let me share a brief story.
Me: I want to get a job that lets me work with children.
State of Florida: You have to get certified!
Me: [spends $300 on classes out at the community college so I can take a common sense, multiple choice test]
Day Cares: We can't hire you if you don't have prior experience.
Me: But I'm certified. Hire me, and I'll gain experience.
Day Care: [Baffled looks]
What's worse is Florida is a right-to-work state, meaning that if I do find a 'real' job, my employer can let me go without notice or reason. (Or like when I worked at Dollar General, accuse me of being short $100 in my cash drawer and telling me I can 'just put it back the next day' therefore forcing me to quit)
So Linkara's job may not be in an office, but at least he knows he's always going to have bad comics that need burning.
Proving on how much people don't give a crap about trolls....unless its something serious
This is off-topic and might sound impatient, but what is the status of Lightbringer?
Greetings Linkara and the rest of AT4W Blog.
I am here to talk a bit about my and others reasons for using ad blockers and why they may have started using them.
As someone who was big into the Live/Life streaming explosion of around 2007-2009 we found our live streaming services being infiltrated seemingly overnight with ads. Full screen ads, banner ads, text ads, etc. These ads would popup randomly and in the case of full screen playing ads they would happen to interrupt the stream people like me were watching and we would miss 30-90 seconds of a stream which we could NOT replay.
This is when many people like me started finding alternatives to those services or the ads completely. Enter Ad Block Plus and other similar tools. Which to many of us seemed like a god send to allow us to watch our live streaming content. When focus started to shift back to pre-recorded static video content naturally we kept using our ad blockers. However, this is not 2009 or 2007 anymore. This is 2013 where people are doing more than just have a web cam pointing towards them and them living their lives.
As such I think we should re-evaluate the reasons for using ad blockers on everything. There is a distinct difference in how ads are handled with live streaming content and statically produced content of say Atop the fourth wall.
On these videos that we watch we do not get interrupted randomly by a commercial. If there are mid-roll ads they are deliberately placed there by producers and of course like Linkara, most will handle it like a traditional television break. Where as streaming services will just interrupt content and play an ad without regard for the live content. Unlike 2008 these players and the ad techniques have evolved and as such ad blockers have as well. Pre-roll ads are not nearly as long or intrusive as they were in the past.
Another distinct difference is in the quality of web series like AT4W. Much like a traditional television show it is not being recorded in front of a computer with a webcam. These shows are filmed on expensive equipment for your benefit and lighting and scripted dialogue are likewise taken seriously. The simple fact that some producers do this AS THEIR DAY JOB is a testament to the quality of the work which creates fan bases and even have a NEED to display ads.
Unlike some services both live and hosted, the producers actually do get and need the revenue generated by ads. While I feel it is justified to block ads on a service that requires you the producer to pay to remove ads and especially when you have no control over how the ads are placed or what content the ads contain, not to mention the format of said ads. I over time have come to not support blocking ads across the board. I feel that as independent producers like Linkara have devoted their time and effort and bet heavily on producing content for us, we should not deny them their income like any other service based industry. They provide us a service and we using their product are expected to pay for it. And rather than us sending them money directly we sacrifice a minute or less on a few ads that do not interrupt the viewing experience and helps to ensure future content. Mid rolls handled well are not a hinderance and banner ads notwithstanding in this as they do interrupt the viewing experience and are hard to dismiss.
We have seen evolution with ads on many services. Some have become very acceptable and still less than ANY TV STATION.
Learn to use the technology you employ to watch content. Learn how your ad blocker works and re-evaluate your use of them. It can only help your future viewing experience because you can more fine grained settings and configurations you can equally protect yourself from issues while finding a balance that allows the people who really deserve it to still be financed by ads. I feel it is all about balance and give and take.
Peace,
Matt A. Tobin
I don't envy your tax situation, with all the forms you have to fill out. I don't envy "independent contractors" who have to pay the employer and employee portion of social security either.
As to the people complaining: Stop.
You are getting entertainment every single week, for free, by someone who almost never misses his Monday "deadline."
For this, you're asked to watch 60 or 120 seconds of advertisements in a 30 minute video. Talk about #FirstWorldProblems.
I guarantee you that that with Mr. Lovhaug's skill set he could get a job making more money than he does making this show, but he does this because he loves entertaining his fans.
As for the ads: I had a paid subscription to Hulu earlier this year, and even with a paid subscription the amount of ads could be really annoying.
On Spike TV's website, sometimes the ads will crash the player in the middle of the show, forcing you to start over - or at least watch all of the ads again.
The time investment in watching ads for AT4W is minimal compared to that.
I still think you should offer your longer vlogs as an audio-only pay-per-download. I would buy them.
:)
Your awesome Lewis. I recently did get a add blocker, though I made sure to white list blip. Oddly enough when I went to SFdebris site my blocker blocked the blip ads there, and I got the 90 second message. I white listed his site then and the problem didn't come up again, but so far that didn't happen with yours. I'm impressed how well you did this to explain things, and I find it funny when you add in your commercials into your videos. Keep up the good quality man.
"This guy really is on your case Lewis. Are you going to call him out for this?"
Asalieri is a known troll and a terrible one at that. He fails so hard Encyclopedia Dramatica, the ultimate trolling website, considers him an even lower wrung than the internet's entire crop of reviewers and video producers. He does not warrant a response; his spiraling self-destruction works far better than any external attack.
I dont have adblocker, yet still i dont see ads from blip. In youtube and in GT i do see, but i have never saw ads in blip videos. Sorry linkara, but there is nothing what i can do about it. It is not my fault if my country is out of blip.tv ads list.
"Asalieri is a known troll and a terrible one at that. He does not warrant a response; his spiraling self-destruction works far better than any external attack."
No he isn't. Despite being labelled a troll you can actually communicate with the guy if you try. He became friends with his 2 biggest haters Irate Gamer and Jfreedan. Hell he even became friends with some he had a falling out with. He would be man enough to apologize if he could if Linkara did about agreeing with Batdan. The man even calls himself an opinionated bias douchebag so I don't see what the problem is.
Basically what I was saying is, if he is approached diplomatically you can turn him into an ally even if he disagrees with you or you with him.
If Blip didn't rent out ad space to known malware proponents and users, then I would have no problem using the add-on's I use. That being said, I've added your site to my "exceptions" list.
God the amount of Likes and Dislikes on this video are crazy. Don't take the dislikes seriously, Lewis. It's the internet, haters gonna hate.
"No he isn't."
Asalieri has all but self-identified himself as one. Sure, he does not take himself seriously, but that doesn't mean he can use that as a "get away with being a terrible video producer" card. Just about every criticism he makes at TGWTG producers, whether it is legitimate or not, can be applied to him ten-fold.
The latest video he made where he basically makes the case that 'Linkara is a fat pompous douchebag who does not care for his audience.'? This is not the case of a pot calling a kettle black. This is the inside of a black hole calling the kettle black.
Do not trust a skinny chef. Asalieri could not make a worthwhile or genuinely entertaining video if he tried. His videos are all about his bitching and moaning about how other people are better than him. He is the Scott Preston of video reviews.
I don't have any adblock program, however since I live outside of the US (and outside of the Anglosphere in general), the ads do not play for me anyway, so sorry for that
When I went to watch your latest episode on the Blip site itself, I got the 'we cannot show this ad' message, but the ad played fine(if slowly) on here. (and I don't have adblock)
However, I do have a question. I usually wait a day or so to watch the newer episodes, since I've learned from experience that they'll run a bit quicker when there's less traffic. Does that affect your revenue at all?
I'll tell ya what. I'll order another shirt IF you change who you get your shirts printed by. They aren't good at it. I'm sure you can find better. Please do.
"However, I do have a question. I usually wait a day or so to watch the newer episodes, since I've learned from experience that they'll run a bit quicker when there's less traffic. Does that affect your revenue at all?"
Not really. XD
The only time it would affect the revenue is if, say, I release the episode on a 31st of the month and then the next day is the start of a new month, meaning it's counted for a different month, but I don't really mind that either way. ^_~
"Do not trust a skinny chef. Asalieri could not make a worthwhile or genuinely entertaining video if he tried. His videos are all about his bitching and moaning about how other people are better than him. He is the Scott Preston of video reviews."
This is just tgwtg fanboys angry with him not like particular video makers He has right to opinion just like you do about him. You do know the guy who written his ed artice was an angry joe fanboy and the irate gamer sucks blog. The Irate Gamer Sucks Blog can't win an argument against the guy because they always call him fat and gay or say what an abusive father he is or they say he used death threats against him. So yeah, Unfortunately he isn't just going to away and this problem with the man could end with Linkara just approached him diplomatically. Linkara earned Asalieri's hate when agreed with Batdannight, which is unfortunate because I'll say this again, he has buried the hatchet and ended feuds with people hated or he had fallings out with. Batdannight seems to the source of this problem.
Thanks for the clarification re: your revenue, Linkara. :D I didn't want to unintentionally deprive you of your money.
Also, something I've been meaning to ask ever since I heard you were a fan of Arthurian lore: Have you ever read The Crystal Cave?
"He has right to opinion just like
you do about him."
Did I say or imply otherwise? No. So this comment is irrelevant.
To expand, because you clearly do not get it, you have the right to say whatever you like. However, before you do say something, you SHOULD ask yourself three important questions (as told by Craig Ferguson):
"Does this need to be said?"
"Does this need to be said by me?"
"Does this need to be said by me - now?"
So if I were Linkara asking myself these questions as to whether I should respond to a sack of crap like Asalieri? NO, NO, NO. Asalieri is not worth it. Linkara not responding is not censoring whatever vile Asalieri wants to spew.
Additionally, free speech works both ways, son. If Linkara (agrees with somebody who) insults Asalieri? He does not owe him an apology. That is real free speech.
Lewis thank you for being an adult about all of this. Thank you for entertaining me for the last 4 or so years. I found everything at TGWTG.com BECAUSE of your first three History of Power rangers videos. I wouldn't have met so many awesome and geeky presenters if not for you. I have disabled my ad blocker for all of the websites with blip or any presenters in light of your earnest way of putting the situation your industry is in. I hope to get to watch you a lot more after this and look forward to you continuing to put logic and good old fashioned common sense into everything you do. That and thank you for being a true Superman fan. You are one of the few people i have ever known to GET the character and what he stands for.
P.S. If you haven't watched it yet I hope you check out the Young Justice cartoon. There are some events in it you will be happy to see and a certain character is in it that will make you smile to see exist again.
Still I do have to wonder: If the substantial arguement against adblocker is 'you can mute a 30 second ad'... surely it's not smarter to just have a 90 second mute wait? I mean both are muted, one means I have to fiddle about less and deal with a whole bunch of other annoying @#$^ (like having loud music suddenly blare at me whilst I'm trying to read an article as the video loads). If I can have them both muted, why not just keep using adblocker? Why should I go through the extra effort?
Also when ads start to run for 90 seconds (and they will, I can put money on this at this point), will you still be able to justify the 'it's only X amount of time' argument? I mean half the videos on the site have 60 seconds of ads, 30 of which that is intercut in the middle. Am I meant to mute these midroll ones to, waiting 30 seconds so I can unmute it and thus not bugger about making sure I don't miss anything?
If your big defending argument is 'you can always just hit mute', surely then it's more logical just to have the muted delay play anyway?
Linkara, my friend, I really wish you had never made that video with all the crap its generating. If you can take it you are better than I. Keep up the good work!
"Additionally, free speech works both ways, son. If Linkara (agrees with somebody who) insults Asalieri? He does not owe him an apology. That is real free speech."
Yes I agree, but ignoring Asalieri is a very bad, bad thing. I mean even Jfreedan even confronted him on Skype. Honestly, I'd swallow my pride even if I thought I was right and try to end this feud. Asalieri and Archfiend seemed to have hurt James popularity with the cheetahmen II rant...now look what is happening with Linkara with the ad revenue vid. just think about how Asalieri ended feuds with some people he hated and people he had a falling out with... despite being a douchebag, he would make a powerful ally.
"Linkara, my friend, I really wish you had never made that video with all the crap its generating. If you can take it you are better than I. Keep up the good work!"
I can take it just fine. ^_^
So if I watch one of your videos multiple times (and therefore watch the commercials multiple times) does that increase your revenue?

Reading your posts makes me feel as though I am talking with someone through the looking glass.
1) There is a difference between swallowing pride (something Linkara has done on more than one occasion) and bending over for someone.
2) Asalieri and Archfiend have no actual clot. When people agree with them, they already had that opinion beforehand (ie. anyone could tell that remaking Cheetahmen II was stupid and a lot of people love adblock). They do not change anyone's minds.
3) If Linkara losses fans because of something some mouth with a mic said about him, who cares?
4) Evidence of Asalieri being a nice guy is entirely unfounded. Even if your premise that Asalieri is willing to be a great diplomat is true his general behavior is still deplorable. He is the one who starts/prolongs these shitstorms instead of swallowing his own pride. He may think his is some polecat who is trying to create discussion by saying provocative things, but we all know this is strictly personal for him.
4) I am done talking about this.
"Evidence of Asalieri being a nice guy is entirely unfounded."
Than this is the last time I'll give you a response. All I was trying to do see if I can could help end this in someway. But I see I couldn't. And again, you pretend like ignoring him and giving him such hate is going to fix the problem.
"Evidence of Asalieri being a nice guy is entirely unfounded"
Wrong. Maybe if you'd try to talk with him you'd understand. I used to fucking hate the man until I PM'd him.
The main reason tgwtg fans hate Asalieri was because he decided to apply the same criticism to every reviewer.
"but we all know this is strictly personal for him."
It became personal when Linkara agreed with Batdan. The same guy who said Asalieri sent him death threats over no longer being a fan of avgn or tgwtg with zero proof. That is really the only reason why he attacked Linkara and Liz.
I block ads and if you feel that takes money out of your pocket I'll simply stop that then. I will no longer view your videos. Sorry to steal from you.
By the way, if you don't have an ad-blocker and get the 90-second page, try refreshing the page. It could just be a browser malfunction.
I repeated myself. to bad. I hope you do well Linkara despite whatever you may think of me for defending Asa. best of luck. :)
Fuck my last point. It was incorrectly listed and I can keep talking about this if I want to.
"All I was trying to do see if I can could help end this in someway. But I see I couldn't. And again, you pretend like ignoring him and giving him such hate is going to fix the problem."
You are under the delusion Asalieri making terrible videos is a problem. The real problem is giving him attention. He has no actual influence on anyone (I said this before, didn't I?). Those who are rallying behind him did not like Linkara's appeal to begin with.
"Maybe if you'd try to talk with him you'd understand. I used to fucking hate the man until I PM'd him."
Less importantly, this is not actually evidence. Evidence is verifiable. How about a screenshot of these messages with your name and his clearly visible, hmm?
More importantly, you are extremely naive. See, you should not get respect by being an asshole first and waiting for a private, amicable agreement. You get respect by being OPENLY respectful.
"It became personal when Linkara agreed with Batdan. The same guy who said Asalieri sent him death threats... ...really the only reason why he attacked Linkara and Liz."
Linkara agreed with Batdan's opinion, not his death threats. If I happen to be mistaken about that, two wrongs do not make a right. This comment also throws out your "the same criticism to every reviewer" bullshit. When things get personal, undeserved or not, we call that bias, son.
You also seem to have forgotten my previous posts. When I say what Asalieri does is "strictly personal", I mean this is not an isolated incident as EVERYTHING he does is strictly personal. You would know this if you read the article on ED, but of course you did not because you claim it was obviously written by a TGWTG fanboy (and here you are arguing everyone's opinion must be heard). You make this claim despite the fact ED is a collaborative wiki that goes after everybody - "Uncle Linky" included. Further, what did Iron Liz do to him to warrant personal attacks?
You are the most diluted thinker I have ever met. Have you ever considered a career in politics?

I'm tired of this and say you win. I was trying to be neutral in this but I guess I came off as Asalieri sympathizing douchebag. I'm sorry dude. would that do? I guess I look to into the asa side of things.
Wow, butthurt smells bad with this one.
Not only you sound like an idiot bigger than Ig about which you love to talk on igs, but also like a douchebag. Are donations not enough? It's still a payment. You act like an asshole and hypocryte. I won't comment on how idiotic you sound in this video, but I will say this - you should be thankful that you have a lot of fans and not make a video bitching about 10 guys who use adblock or other things.
Also not enough money, and you want to sell DVDs? So what's the point of this video other than sounding like an idiot and douchebag? by acting like that you will loose your fanbase fast. Congrats.
"Wow, butthurt smells bad with this one.

Sooo, let me get this straight - a polite video explaining how the revenue works and the affects that adblocker have on it makes me butthurt? And apparently you're not aware that the donation button is NEW and only being implemented because FANS asked for it. Also, you're bringing the Irate Gamer into this for some reason even though he has nothing to do with anything associated with this video or this discussion. You've also not looked at any other comments on this page or the various responses I've made on twitter where I thank fans for their support, regardless of how they do it. But that's fine, keep trying to hurl insults at me on my own blog, which by the way I moderate the comments for and therefore can decide when I've grown bored of your own idiocy, anonymous user.
"Also not enough money, and you want to sell DVDs? So what's the point of this video other than sounding like an idiot and douchebag? by acting like that you will loose your fanbase fast. Congrats."
Hmmm... checking my statistics, my viewership numbers remain the same that they were before the video. Yeah, not really seeing a mass exodus of my fanbase that you are apparently predicting.
And the point of the video was to explain how the revenue worked and to respond to various reasons people use the adblock and humbly request that people let the ads play and then not actually insult people if they decide to continue doing so. And to offer alternatives if they wish to support me in other ways, say through merchandise I will be spending my time working on and producing for them.
You know, doing that instead of going to someone's blog, posting anonymously and attempting to insult them. Because that's what makes ME the douchebag.
I get the podcast, so I don't see the adverts. Should I start watching them on this site or Blip instead?
I am suddenly glad I forgot to turn off my computer the other day. I think I had your blip channel playing for about 5 hours while I was running errands. I don't run adblock so I hope it helped.
Wow the backlash of this video O.O
I mean when you posted it I thought it was a great idea you get your opinion out there explain a little bit of what goes on with the Ads. And there you go. Come back a few days later, and the Trolls, Haters, and Biggest, Dirtiest people on the net are Cyber Bullying you. I remember talking with you with a group of others at Animinne last year, and how you gain money through your videos, and it was amazing how difficult it is to do the taxes, and have to budget it all out was.
We the AT4W fans, and you will ride out this tornado of hatred.
I hope Asalieri, and all the other Trolls get their IPs Banned from their respective sites they post on to Cyber Bully other people on the net.
On a different note Can't wait for the conclusion of 2099 month, And then I'll just have to wait till Animinne this year to see ya, and if there is time get a Duel in with ya. Till then take care.

I wouldn't say I'm being cyberbullied. XD I'm just getting a few people posting stupid things, usually with bad grammar and spelling.
Most people have been perfectly calm and reasonable.
We all have our own views and opinions Linkara, and to me I just don't like hatred, and trolling as it gets old.
"checking my statistics, my viewership numbers remain the same that they were before the video. Yeah, not really seeing a mass exodus of my fanbase that you are apparently predicting"
So what's the point of this video if viewership is so high? Because I don't get it then. You want more? How about doing something else?
About hypocrite and douchebaggery
You say whitelist the ads, for which showing YOU are paid, so for YOU it's ok to say to hell with them as long as YOU make money. So you are going adblock for them and it's okay AND you encourage people to do that, but when someone adblocks your videos than it's suddenly wrong and you are making video about it. Who cares if you get money, right?
"So what's the point of this video if viewership is so high? Because I don't get it then. You want more? How about doing something else?"
Because you're still operating under this impression that view count = exact revenue. No, there's views and then there's MONETIZABLE views. See, if someone watches the video with an adblocker turned on, that's not counted as a monetizable view. If over 2/3 of my audience isn't monetizable, then suddenly the majority of my audience isn't getting ads and I'm getting considerably less revenue. And I'm telling you I haven't seen a change in the number of people watching the videos, but since I put out the "Please Let the Ads Play," I HAVE seen a significant increase in the amount of monetizable views.
"You say whitelist the ads, for which showing YOU are paid, so for YOU it's ok to say to hell with them as long as YOU make money. ...Who is this "them" you're referring to? I'm assuming you're referring to other websites that rely on ad revenue. See, here's the thing: this video is not some blanket moral response to the use of adblockers or attempting to make some larger political statement about people utilizing them. It's a video about how adblockers affect ME. And because my fans seem to care about how I am affected by it, that's the priority. There is nothing stopping other websites that rely on ad revenue to make similar remarks, but I'm not here to become the spokesman of the Anti-Adblocker Organization or whatever. If you look through the comments here and on TGWTG, you'll see that a lot of people didn't know that we got money from ad revenue and thought they weren't hurting anybody by using it and now they realize how it works.
The video is meant to INFORM people and make a polite request. That is all.
Dear Mr. Rob Green,
Man up, would you? People are going to call you not nice thing online and offline no matter where you go. Do you remember this phrase back at kindergarten? "Sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you." Trolling and hatred, whatever those two mean anymore since they are constantly misapplied to 'that thing people do that I don't like and/or find amusing', are not as bad as anyone makes them out to be. You are no longer in grade school - act like it.

"Man up, would you? People are going to call you not nice thing online and offline no matter where you go. Do you remember this phrase back at kindergarten? "Sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you." Trolling and hatred, whatever those two mean anymore since they are constantly misapplied to 'that thing people do that I don't like and/or find amusing', are not as bad as anyone makes them out to be. You are no longer in grade school - act like it."
Aaaaand here's where I step in and call complete and utter bull.
That phrase? "Words will never hurt me?" It's utter and complete garbage, encouraged to children in an attempt to frighten off bullying, but is a complete LIE.
Words will ALWAYS hurt people because words are the most powerful weapon in the world. Words are communication. Words are understanding. Words are language and art and thought. Words have the power to inspire, crush, bring hope, or cause terror. The use of the right words at the right time can forever be sewn into the tapestry of history and the wrong ones can bring death to the innocent.
You want to see him act like he's no longer in grade school? Fine - you can start by understanding the significance of words and the way words can be used to hurt others, because only a grade schooler thinks that they don't matter.
Please do not misconstrued what I mean. Words are powerful, yes, and I value them too. Whenever I write something, I always choose my words carefully even if it is an anonymous comment on a blog. The world would be a better place if everyone did the same.
BUT - we do not live in an ideal world. People are going to use words to bully or instigate others, and you cannot always rely on someone else to get them to shut-up (when you can, there is no shame in doing so). The phrase "sticks and stones" refers to how when someone uses hurtful language, you ignore them and/or laugh it off, but when they use violence the physical damage to the body cannot be simply ignored.
I am not trying to say following this adage is easy, but over time this does make you stronger and more resilient to harsh language. Whining about it when it happens simply empowers the instigator and makes you look thin skinned. I do not support bullying or instigation, online or offline, but there are good and bad ways of handling it.

That's true, but at the same time psychological effects of it can be just as damaging for a person, especially if the effects end up the same - an inability to accomplish what they had done before the damage.

And this is true as well. The point is more really that people need to be more careful with their words due to the power of them. And while it's true that a thick skin IS necessary, especially when deluged by abuse, all people are different and one doesn't know how others will react to this stuff. I'd be lying if I said things people have said to me have never gotten under my skin. I just wanted to make it clear that it's not always easy to simply say "oh well, this isn't going to affect me today."
Okay, I did some digging and found (on the Ad Blocker forums, no less) the urls you can whitelist to see the ads.
ad.auditude.com
ads.static.blip.tv
I whitelisted those urls and the ads play as normal. I also very quickly discovered that Blip likes to toss pop-up ads in the videos every 20 seconds or so that I have to click through, which truly aggravates me.
Alright, This website and That Guy With the Glasses are white listed for Google Chrome. Same goes for my Firefox. Oh, man that Dvd sounds pretty cool. I'll have to wait till I know what's going to be on it.
Hey Linkara! I've been a fan of AT4W since before the Vyse arc, and I would just like to say that I thought this video was well done: except for a few big things, but I'll get to that later. First, the good stuff.
Firstly, I have NO idea where people get off calling this video "condescending" or "whining" like I've seen. Honestly, those people are seeing things in this video that aren't there to begin with. This video was strait to the point about how AdBlocker affects you as a pro internet reviewer, and it gives fans that use AdBlocker for legitimate reasons (myself included) ways to support you in your job. I also liked your professional tone: you weren't condescending in my opinion, mainly because you explained things in a calm, even voice that said "you might know this, but it bears repeating." Also, I liked that you thanked your fans for making the effort to view the ads despite their issues. I think that through that, you made it more than clear that this video wasn't some ploy to grub money, and although you will undoubtedly be getting more revenue as a result of this video, that fact is NOT a direct result of you asking for money: you simply made people aware of thee issues. (By the way, now that I'm aware of their existence, I will be contributing to your Paypal and purchasing the AT4W DvD.... Once I get the money, that is. Being in college sucks sometimes.)
Now, onto the qualms I had with this video. For starters, something kinda rubbed me the wrong way about how you suggested for people to "mute the ads." I hope that little statement and its sentiment won't be picked up by people that matter to your ad revenue, because the practice you advocated sounds uncomfortably close to ad fraud to me.... (I'm no expert on this, and I may be completely off base, but I don't think I am here.) Now, don't get me wrong: I have no love for ads. In fact, I despise ads with a burning passion (and no, that's not the main reason why I use AdBlocker, but it does add icing on the "the offensive ads really put me off due to my religious choices" cake, with a delicious siding of "My computer cannot function for hours after I view an ad on Blip" chocolate fondue) but I don't want to see you be harmed later by making statements like that. Plus, it seems.... Disingenuous to suggest such things in the first place. Almost like your saying "These guys help me make my living. I'm going to tell my fans to not support them." Yeah, I know, I know. "Look at Scott, standing up for the evil corporations that shove annoying ads into our videos! They make too much money already, it doesn't matter! Tar N' Feather him!" I'm just calling it as I see it. Take that criticism as you will, Linkara and know that no offense is meant.
Secondly, I think I'll need clarification before I continue on. So, a question: Do you believe that people who view your videos with AdBlocker, and do not donate, nor have plans to donate, are stealing money from you? You didn't mention those kinds of people in your video, you only mentioned people who can't (or don't, as in my case) see the ads and have tried to do all they could to help.
Lastly, and this really is insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but you didn't answer one of my big questions I had about this AdBlock stuff. If you had to make a guess right now, at risk of having your most precious possession smashed with a sledgehammer, about how much money do you lose out on when people use AdBlocker? Just give me a ballpark estimate on any measurement that you think is telling, I'm not asking for you to calculate it exactly, that'd just be dumb.
I'll be eagerly awaiting a response, if it should come. If not, I hope you take my words into account, and know that it comes from a fan that, while not in any way outspoken, appreciates you and your work immensely. Keep it up!
-Scott
(Yeesh, long comment is long....)
"Do you believe that people who view your videos with AdBlocker, and do not donate, nor have plans to donate, are stealing money from you? Depends on their attitude about it, I suppose. You've probably seen a few posts here and there who are downright rude about their actions and in many ways are simply trying to get a rise out of me for their own amusement. Others? Couldn't say for certain. Everyone has their reasons and they may simply be planning to do something later about it.
"If you had to make a guess right now, at risk of having your most precious possession smashed with a sledgehammer, about how much money do you lose out on when people use AdBlocker? Well, hard to say. I don't like to be public about how many people watch and how much revenue I get out of fear of alienating my fellow reviewers. What I can tell you is that when blip revised its system for monetizable revenue, 2/3 of my audience were no longer monetizable. Now previously 1/3 of my audience wasn't counted due to being in foreign countries or various other reasons, but when you lose THAT much of the audience and you're really damn certain that the majority of your audience is based in the USA and UK, it's cause for concern.
Hope that helps and thanks for watching and giving polite feedback! ^_^
Hey,
Long time fan, first time commenter. Just wanted to say that I have never used adblock. I already knew about how the ads gave you an income.
Honestly, I'm totally fine with sitting through them each time because all the work you put into your videos is easily worth 30+ seconds of ad time. In fact I would sit though 5 minute long ads lol
Just want to finish up by saying I think you're awesome! And here's to many more years of AT4W :)
I feel sorry for you. Two of the biggest douchebags on the Internet (Asalieri and The Archfiend) have ganged up on you and are trying to make you look bad.
The real problem is that everyone in this supply chain considers the next step higher up to be a "necessary evil." Viewers consider ads a necessary evil in order to view content. Linkara considers bad ads a necessary evil to allow his business to make money. Blip.TV considers quality content a necessary evil in order to get their advertisements out there.
This results in viewers using adblock, Linkara telling viewers to just mute the ads, advertisers actively trying to prevent content from loading if the ads don't load, and Blip's clients further up the chain absolutely violating viewers' computers any way they can using mallicious code.
Everyone involved in this process has apparently decided that some or all of the other parties want insane, impossible things and therefore their input should be ignored.
Take me, for example. I don't give a damn about the new Swiffer. I will NEVER give a damn about the new Swiffer. It doesn't matter how many useless Swiffer Ads Blip WASTES MY TIME showing me, I will NEVER purchase a Swiffer. Not for myself. Not as a gift to others. Every time I am shown a Swiffer ad while surfing the internet, everyone's time and resources were WASTED, not just my own. Yet companies like Blip want to fight tooth and nail to force me, trick me, or beg me to voluntarily watch Swiffer ads. Why? For the love of god why?
The answer is that nobody involved cares about me as an individual or as a human being, they just see me as a number. I am an outlier on a statistical graph in some suit's business model, and that's all that counts. Even if they're not trying to reach me-- even if it's IMPOSSIBLE or MEANINGLESS for them to reach me, they don't care. They just want to keep ramming ads down the throats of people who, apparently, hate ads as much as I do, yet will go out and buy a Swiffer if they are shown an ad of one.
(If these sorts of people actually exist, then I am deeply sad for our species and the future. Fortunately, I'm pretty sure people that dumb DON'T exist, but are merely a conceptual way marketers have of modelling the effects of ACTUAL advertisements so that they can understand how they work.)
There is a way to fix this, but it involves consensus and, y'know, communication, rather than just all parties involved saying "the bad thing I'm doing is fine and totally justified! You other guys need to stop doing YOUR bad thing!"
I think Linkara actually made a good first step by at least opening an honest dialogue with this video. But as long as Blip treats content creators, viewers, and advertisers as obstacles to their bottom line, and clients treat Blip, content creators, and viewers as obstacles to their bottom line, and viewers keep treating Blip, content creators and advertisers as obstacles to their free entertainment, things are just going to keep getting more and more aggressive and dysfunctional as the bottom continues to fall out of thing thing.
¡¡I'm watching ads here in Argentina on Blip now!! I can now contribute to your enonomy Lewis :)
I tell you, a guy calmly tries to explain to his fans how something they may or may not be using could cause some problems for him in a calm, collected, and polite way, and the trolls, haters, and ignorant just start coming out of the woodwork. It gives me solace to know that those folks are probably a very vocal minority.
Either way, I give you props, Lewis. The ability to keep a cool head no matter how stupid people are being is something I can respect in anyone. There are times when it feels like it's an oddly rare trait in this day and age.
But more on-topic, I'll admit, I've never used adblocks before, but this certainly does give context to the commercial breaks, and makes me all the more glad that I do sit through them. For what it's worth, you shall have this fan's continued support! ^_^
How about no? No, I will continue to use Ad Block, especially when Ads are still being viewed even with Ad Block, and will not take it down for your e-begging ways.
'E-begging?' Lewis(if I may call you that) has said numerous times in these comments that he added the Paypal button because the fans asked him to. They wanted it, not him. Not once in the video did he BEG for money. He politely explained how the system works, and gave alternatives for those people that still want use adblock for whatever reason.
Lewis-I'd also like to commend you for the mature way you are handling the negative people. You are a true gentleman.
This video made me disable adblock. Unfortunately, Blip's horrible scheme (especially pop-up ads. I hate them with a passion) made their hosted videos unwatchable to me.
Stuck between the choice of my entertainment being lowered by advertising, blocking advertising and depriving Lewis and other content providers of well earned income, or not watching videos, still depriving Lewis of income, but not being a hypocrite, I chose the latter.
This is not meant to be read as "I'm leaving because you suck" to Lewis, but a note to others that they're not being forced to watch anything. They are however, intentionally being jerks.
Maybe someday Blip will fix things to be more watchable (hey, ads that aren't getting watched are ads that aren't doing their job!), maybe some new site that will allow a different way to monetize videos will crop up, maybe I'll get used to ads and come back, and maybe pigs will fly. Who knows what the future will bring, but for the present, I refuse to be a hypocrite and demand free quality content.
You are actually reading this? Fine. You are one reason why I really got into comics and began to appreciate old comics from the 90's, I think that you actually address your audience in a very respectful way and you also think that Quesada is a hack. I dislike part of the New 52 but I like some of the comics being published (Red Hood and the Outlaws is seriously stupid in my opinion). However I think that Marvel NOW is a better alternative because some of the books are very good, really (Spider-ock notwithstanding) and I greatly disliked Green Lantern (film). That said, I'm a loyal fan and I have no qualms about watching the ads, you are my favorite reviewer and I admire what you do each week. Thank you Linkara!
"This is not meant to be read as "I'm leaving because you suck" to Lewis, but a note to others that they're not being forced to watch anything.
Who knows what the future will bring, but for the present, I refuse to be a hypocrite and demand free quality content."
You're not demanding free content, though. As I said in the video - I perfectly understand the problem you face and don't hold it against you if you're completely unable to watch the video without disabling the ads.
If you're not making enough money, change your business plan. You knew the risks of the world you where coming into when you decided to do this full-time. The business reacts to the consumer, the consumer does not react to the business. You have to adapt to the world, and not the other way around. If this series doesn't have a big enough audience - make another one, make more. If this is your day job - working on these videos 9-5 - you should be able to think of other revenue streams. CGR does it, other producers do it, this is a competitive world, and unfortunately if you're not succeeding, that is your fault, not your viewers. Oh and also, don't tell people just to skip the ads. You're living of off the ad companies success, if they see videos like this they will put even less value into internet advertising. Oh and you say whitelist you but not everyone else - are they not worth it then?
To be honest, Linkara, this does come across as e-begging, and I agree with Archfiend on that angle. HOWEVER, and this is a major however, because I am such a big fan of your work, I honestly have no problem with that. You're the sort of entertainer I would willingly give money if I had stable access to it (hence why I'll most likely grab the DVD when it comes out), so I'm perfectly fine with letting the ads play.
I had a feeling, after looking at the comment you made on the VLOG, that you were confusing him for someone else at that point (I go through some of that myself, so I understand). I understand fully why you didn't want to get into a debacle and respond directly to him, given what ended up happening.
I would highly advise however, as I don't want to see any more undue stress fall your way about this kind of e-drama BS, that you try and think things through a bit better next time, just so you won't give people reason to be as douchy as Archfiend was.
Hi there Linkara.I can see the ads, so you can count on my support. Keep being awesome good sir.
And after those haters are sent to damnation, there's a nice man in white that'll be more than happen to seal you in a box filled with horror and madness for all eternity :D
K don't know if that joke was necessary or not
When did all of them start following Stan Lee's logic: http://youtu.be/hKcSy8C-4CU
Oh but I kid, Stan Lee :D
Lewis, you should not have put up this video. It does not make you look good at all. It makes you look whiny, greedy, and self entitled. I have been watching since you started your show on channel awesome and I have never used any form of ad blocker on your videos or that of any video maker on channel awesome or otherwise. I have done this because I do want to help support you and people like you who I think deserve to make money off of hard work and providing myself and others with entertainment. That said, I nor anyone else who watches you, does not owe you a living. A person who uses ad blocker does not respect you or the work that you do? It certainly sounds like you do not respect the right of your fans to enjoy their computers and internet that they pay for the way they want to. More and more users are using ads at the beginning of the video, at the end, one in the middle, and smaller ones that pop up frequently, and it gets very annoying. If they don't want to see a commercial that's their right and you complaining about that makes you look like a jerk. And if your having money troubles, with all do respect Lewis, get a second job. You don't get any sympathy here. You have a job I would kill for. You sit around reading comic books all day long, you get to act and perform, have fun, and you get an international following, some recognition, and attention. You know what I do for a living? I'm a security guard. I waste 40 hours of my life a week watching neighborhoods. It's very tiring, unbelievably boring, and every now and then someone comes up to me and tries to kill me. And I don't complain. You can't pay your bills? There are plenty of people in your position who have two jobs, support children, and a family and still have time to post a videos. Somehow they manage and I'm sure you could too. And if I recall I recall Rob Walker himself has gone on record that you should only make videos if you really enjoy it and would continue to make them if your were not paid and their was no money in it. I think you need to seriously rethink your career choice if you are having doubts. I doubt that many people are using ad blocker; at most your losing about 10 bucks from the people that are savvy enough to use it. Furthermore, if you are to continue in the attitude that people should stop ad blocking you and other users on the grounds that you are losing money, then I better not see you or any other Channel Awesome members in Washington D.C. next time SOPA or some other bill like it that threatens to shut you down is in debate because the supporters of SOPA and the DMCA have the same argument, that people that use copyrighted images and clips under Fair Use like yourself are costing their industries millions of dollars, and likewise those alleged millions are pennies compared to their overall profits. Complaining about ad blocker and yet ignoring and undermining those copyright holders would make you and others like you hypocrites and I expect better of you. I would lose all respect for you and Channel Awesome the next time you champion for internet rights under those circumstances. I am very disappointed in you for uploading this video. I was so angry about it that I have now started to notice and be annoyed by the ads on online videos and now I am considering installing ad blocker and I'm sure I'm not the only one. By making this statement you are encouraging people to ad block yourself and others by pissing them off. It was a mistake of you to put this video up. I am not saying this to be rude or to disrespect you. I am saying this as a long time fan. I would like to know that the person I have been watching for the past four or five years, a man who I do respect and admire the work of, is not a bum asking for a hand out.
"Furthermore, if you are to continue in the attitude that people should stop ad blocking you and other users on the grounds that you are losing money, then I better not see you or any other Channel Awesome members in Washington D.C. next time SOPA or some other bill like it that threatens to shut you down is in debate because the supporters of SOPA and the DMCA have the same argument, that people that use copyrighted images and clips under Fair Use like yourself are costing their industries millions of dollars, and likewise those alleged millions are pennies compared to their overall profits. Pretty much everything else you brought up has already been addressed in other comments, so I'll get to this one:
See, obviously you don't get why we were fighting SOPA. We have no problem with combatting piracy. Our problem with SOPA was the range of powers it granted and the lack of a fair system, to the point where any shmuck or troll could have filed a copyright violation without proof that they were even the copyright owner and then be shut down permanently.
Here's the problem I have with the ads. Even with adblock putting blip on the whitelist it still displays the error and doesn't display the ads. Tried it on Firefox Chrome and IE ads don't display on any of the three even though I don't have adblock installed in the last two. Guessing my hosts file is eating the ads. I only rarely see ads on Youtube and I've got it whitelisted as well.
Hey Linkara,
Thanks for the message. I always thought adblockers just diverted the ad, I, like many others it seems didn't realise that they meant views were discounted and actually cost people money. Obviously will whitelist sites I support that rely on ads in future (as long as they don't have tons of popups or autoloading video ads- hate those things)
I do think there are problems with ads. Blip player is incredibly buggy, streams badly and can crash after watching ads and in many cases it seems like the same ad gets played over and over (a major problem on TGWTG- if I have to watch that car advert about "elegant and practical" one more time it's really going to put me off the site in general).
Hey I just wanted to let you know that I think some of your problem may be server-side? I watch your show at work via Firefox, and that little 90 window has come up a few times without me doing anything, for about a month or so.
I typically re-watch older content from my house too, so I don't think I'm costing ya too much dinero, but I just wanted to let you, to let blip know, that some of this may be some sort of issue with the code, firefox, and whatever firewall some places of business choose to use.
so when people pirate from you thats bad but when your brother pirates from the bbc thats cool makes sense
"so when people pirate from you thats bad but when your brother pirates from the bbc thats cool makes sense"
You did hear me repeatedly tell him multiple times not to encourage piracy, right? =P
I know Linkara doesn't really care that much about the negative comments he's getting ,but personally this is driving me nuts on how people seem to misinterpret or distort what you were saying in the video.
At this point I have no choice ,but to direct all those commenters to this video: http://youtu.be/NZN1HowUV5Q
However I must admit, there are some that are trying to sound mean ,but are just unintentionally hilarious. One of them being that "the stories of the comics you review are better than the ones on your show". Yeah, because a story where the Justice Leauge loses their powers supposedly because of god and acts like idiots, is just SO much better than a story about a glitch who turns into an outer god that wants to consume reality!
I'm sorry, I had to get that off my chest
Wow Lewis, just wow. This is just amazing. The wailing and gnashing of teeth when you proceed to make a pretty reasonable request is frankly amazing to me.
I laughed, not at you, but at some of the people getting on your case about it.
I wonder how they would have felt if you went all Harlan Ellison on them? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj5IV23g-fE
And for the people who complain "you're a hypocrite for marching against SOPA and not wanting people to pirate you" umm, despite what people who support SOPA insists, it is not just about piracy. I think that the comparison can be made to using a cannon to kill mosquitoes. To stop piracy, we go after every claim of copyright infringement, regardless if it is an actual claim or a false one. Voltaire has been caught on the bad end of this, despite the fact that he does all of his original work. Are you really going to trust legislation from the people who thought that listening to a song on the radio is piracy?
Keep up the awesome work, Lewis. And I hope you get many more years on the couch.
Wait. That did not sound right...oh well.
Also, I am not sure if you would do them, but would you have baby or kid sized t-shirts? I know that your show is not geared towards kids, but I do think that a Youngbloods Disease or Pollo Lives T-Shirt would be adorable on my kid. If not, I will just have to settle for the adult sizes. Le sigh
A little man sits up way high
Way up above the crowd
Can you make them dance real fast?
Can you make them cheer real loud?
Money doesn't talk it swears, it sounds like a big machine.
A voice on high says you reap what you sow just keep your own nose clean.

...wut.
He seemed no different from the rest
Just a healthy normal boy
His mama always did her best
And he was daddy's pride and joy
He learned to walk and talk on time
But never cared much to be held
And steadily he would decline
Into his solitary shell
As a boy he was considered somewhat odd
Kept to himself most of the time
He would daydream in and out of his own world
But in every other way he was fine
He's a Monday morning lunatic
Disturbed from time to time
Lost within himself
In his solitary shell
A temporary catatonic
Madman on occasion
When will he break out
Of his solitary shell
He struggled to get through his day
He was helplessly behind
He poured himself onto the page
Writing for hours at a time
As a man he was a danger to himself
Fearful and sad most of the time
He was drifting in and out of sanity
But in every other way he was fine
He's a Monday morning lunatic
Disturbed from time to time
Lost within himself
In his solitary shell
A momentary maniac
With casual delusions
When will he be let out
Of his solitary shell
"A momentary maniac
With casual delusions
When will he be let out
Of his solitary shell"
Okie dokie, just FYI: this is the last of these I'm going to let through. I try to keep the comments sections of the blog on-topic and poetry slams are not the subject of the blog, so either explain yourself or move on.
Google the title it's right there in the chorus.
"Google the title it's right there in the chorus."
"Solitary Shell" by Dream Theater. You still have failed to explain what it or its full lyrics have to do with a video about letting advertisements play.
Read it then carefully and then do a lyrical analysis of it in your head.
After you do that get back to me.
"Read it then carefully and then do a lyrical analysis of it in your head.
After you do that get back to me."
The implication of the lyrics, especially in regards to being a "Monday Morning maniac" is in relation to the day and time in which I release new episodes of Atop the Fourth Wall. As such, it seems to be describing me.
Now admittedly this could be in relation to Linkara the character and some other deeper meaning in regards to who HE is within the show. If that's the case, it's interesting, but still doesn't relate to the subject of this particular comment thread and even then I don't appreciate posting the full lyrics to a song as a post.
However, SINCE it's posted here, the other interpretation of it in relation to me is that it's referring to me personally out of character - that I am delusional, introverted, lacking socialization, paranoid, and am a danger to myself and others.
In other words: a big, convoluted way to insult me.
If it is, I have to roll my eyes, especially tonight of all nights when I'm going to watch movies with friends tonight, wake up every day reminding myself how lucky and happy I am to be where I am, and am looking forward to a bunch of conventions this summer where I interact with lots of fans, answer questions, and get them to laugh and be entertained. And subsequently I am reminded just how fortunate I am to have such wonderful fans who took the video's message to heart and have now improved the statistics of videos in terms of ads viewed, so in the end the video was still worth creating and releasing for people to see.
Feel free to enlighten me which of the interpretations is the more accurate one. If it's the first, thank you for the interesting thoughts, but please try to keep it more direct than just posting the lyrics. If it's the second, welcome to my blog, where I aprove every post and as such further attempts to troll me will be met with my general indifference and my decision to not let any other attempts go through.
"In other words: a big, convoluted way to insult me."
Pompous pseudo-intellectual twit.
"Pompous pseudo-intellectual twit."
See, if you're going to insult me, just do it and get it out of the way like this!
"See, if you're going to insult me, just do it and get it out of the way like this!"
Tudo bem, então.
Você é um pomposo auto-justos um bobo com toda a cultura e a criação de um lobotomized warthog e a urbanidade de uma ténia.
Agora vá ferver a sua cabeça.
For those who don't speak Portuguese (or do not have access to google translate, the fine gentleman above me posted this:
"All right, then.
You are a pompous self-righteous a fool with all the culture and the creation of a lobotomized warthog and urbanity of a tapeworm.
Now go boil your head."
Points for effort in that regard. You're really going out of your way to troll me.
That having been said, I have lost interest in this conversation and therefore will not be approving any more insult posts. Good day.
Aww, look at the anon commenter trying to get under Linkara's skin. It's almost adorable. *Pats on head*
I don't blame you for getting bored quick, Lewis. I haven't encountered such rapier wit since I left Junior High.
"Good day."
Dismissive much.
"Dismissive much."
Oh, yes, it's very important I continue the conversation with the person telling me to boil my head. I shouldn't dismiss that at all. =P
Lewis, all this talk about boiling heads is making me want to watch the MST3K episode of Bloodlust..
Also, one of the catchpas is 'champion.' Very apropo.. ;)
"Oh, yes, it's very important I continue the conversation with the person telling me to boil my head. I shouldn't dismiss that at all"
When you listen to fools the mob rules.
Y'know what? I considered getting adblock at one point, but seeing many insecure little boys getting angry over having to watch a flipping ad (never mind the hypocrisy in not attacking other internet personalities who are in the same boat as Linkara), I'm not getting it and enjoying seeing you petulant little whiners crying over having to watch a stinking advertisement.
Also, from another internet critic y'all should check out: "Let's face facts. If it wasn't for the fact that you have to watch adverts before videos on Youtube, Blip and other streaming websites, you wouldn't be able to watch that entertainment for free. If those adverts didn't exist anymore, then the websites would have to charge people to watch the content, or pay a subscription fee to use the website. I don't use adblocker because I like to support all the people I watch. I also understand that adverts are how internet content providers make money so they can continue making content. Also...it's hardly inconvenient to sit through an advert. There are many adverts that you can skip after watching for 5 seconds. Are those 5 seconds really so horrible to endure that you have to block them so that the person you're watching doesn't earn money for their hard work? "
OK, so I did some thinking, and I came up with songs for your characters:(well...except for 90s Kid, 'cause he's got Nirvana)
Linkara: Either 'Holding out for a Hero' or 'Magic Man'
Harvey: anything by Sinatra.
Linksano: 'She Blinded Me With Science' (since Insano already got 'Weird Science')
Mechakara: Either 'O Fortuna' or 'Dies Irae'
Holokara: Not sure, to be honest...
You should read the band biographies of Motley Crue and AC/DC to find out what its really like to "suffer for your art".
You probably couldn't imagine what its like to play in a shitty nightclub for $50 and be performing in front of a hostile crowd of 150 people that doesn't want you there and throws things at you to try and get you to leave the stage before your set is over.
You couldn't even begin imagine what its like to go to the food bank for food or live with four other people in two dumpy rooms in a rundown apartment complex in a bad part of town sleeping on the floor for three years, or what its like to have your work rejected by every major record label four times in a row because it wasn't "commercial" enough.
Then having to resort to borrowing money from your grandmother like Vince Neil and Tommy Lee did to finance the independent release of Crue's first album which if it failed would not only have finished them off financially but would have also destroyed their families finances.
I don't know, Lewis. Linkara soup. The little troll could be onto something. I am not sure what that something is, but something.
How dare you inform people that to have content, you need the ads to play! How dare you get money for what you do at all! Such gall sir! Such gall!
Okay, I could not do that for five seconds with a straight face.
I am not sure if you answered this, and if I am annoying you, please let me know, but I was wondering if you were thinking of doing a line of shirts in babies/kids sizes. As I said, I know that your show is not geared towards kids, although I think parents who are also fans would love it. If you have no intention of doing it now or in the future, that is cool. If you do ever decide to do that, I have only one thing to say to you, sir:
Shut Up and Take My Money!!!!
While I don't get ads in the first place, I have, out of respect, whitelisted blip.tv. That way, if I actually start getting ads, I know I'd be contributing to the show.
Keep doing what you're doing, man. You're all aces in my book.
Unfortunately, although the answer was indeed clear, simple, and straightforward, there is some difficulty in justifiably assigning to it the fourth of the epithets you applied to the statement, inasmuch as the precise correlation between the information you communicated and the facts, insofar as they can be determined and demonstrated, is such as to cause epistemological problems, of sufficient magnitude as to lay upon the logical and semantic resources of the English language a heavier burden than they can reasonably be expected to bear.
As others have said, this isn't me denying you ad revenue, this is me denying some third/fourth/fifth/sixth party whom I will never know, nor ever be able to put a finger on in any way executing code locally on MY computer- and in order to do all the lovely things ads do, they MUST do this.
From an IT perspective, this is a VERY raw deal for the user. Terribly sorry that puts you in a bad spot, but as an IT guy, this is a rule I'm never going to break.
My machine, my rules.
Sadly, the way advertising is done on the internet (with an astounding degree of 'ignorance is bliss' mentality)is never going to change until someone successfully sues a big enough name (a second or third party).
I'm not holding my breath, frankly.
I think you have quite a bit of Foe Yay Haters from this because most of them won't seem to shut about it. And I think MrTardisReviews said it best.
Hey, I'm sorry for how some people are reacting. It's one thing to disagree with something, but some are REALLY blowing it out of proportion! I haven't seen this much issues with what a person on Youtube said since Feminist Frequency launched a kick starter on video games. I'll try to fix my ad-blocker thing now that I know the situation; keep up the awesome work Linkara or Lewis, which ever name is okay with you. I don't really comment on any videos, but I hope an anonymous comment is enough.
I made my own video response ,but I don't think that many people would be interested
I'm surprised I haven't snapped at this negative feedback from idiots who don't know why advertisements exist or why they are important to something called "BASIC CAPITALISM". So even though some people might care less, here is my response:
http://www.youtu.be/SoAlTkXuwj0
Hiya, Linkara. I apologise for posting on an old video, but I've been catching up (Long story, want to watch the Star Trek show and films, decided to wait on the Star Trek film reviews, realised I might be too busy for years to get far enough, decided to just skip to the story bits and save the review part for glorious rewatches. ^_^') and I have been bothered by something.
As was mentioned by Ryu Sensei, some places have a skipping button after five seconds. I get that often here in Denmark, but the strange thing is that I don't get a skippable 30-second ad, but 15 seconds to choose among several 230~ second ads and am utterly confused as to how this affects your revenue. I know you said you have no idea how it interacts, but I was wondering if you knew any channels I could go through to find out? I couldn't initially find anything on Blip, though I am willing to look again. ^_^
I do intend to make use of the donation button (I see it as giving a gift, so my apologies if that sounded bad. >_<) and possibly merchandise (Denmark, not unlimited money, &c. Sorries. ^_^', but I'd like to learn if watching all the ad does mean I can help pay more for the videos. Even if you can't help, thanks for reading anyway. :)
"just how fortunate I am to have such wonderful fans who took the video's message to heart and have now improved the statistics of videos in terms of ads viewed, so in the end the video was still worth creating and releasing for people to see."
So conning the mugs worked then, did it?
"So conning the mugs worked then, did it?"
What exactly did I "con the mugs" out of, exactly?
"What exactly did I "con the mugs" out of, exactly?"
Cor blimey, either you're a right bellend or you're soft in the head.
But then again pikey twats like you generally like to pull on thier own plonkers rather than face the real world.

You're a very stupid person and I no longer feel like conversing with you.

University education, you just can't beat it.
Especially if you're a pompous self righteous pseudo-intellectual pillock with delusions of grandeur and an inferiority complex.
"University education, you just can't beat it.
Especially if you're a pompous self righteous pseudo-intellectual pillock with delusions of grandeur and an inferiority complex."
Well, if you're going to have delusions, you may as well go for the really satisfying ones.
And with that Babylon 5 quote out of the way, it's obvious that your only interest is in insulting me and carrying on your own delusions about me and the people who watch my videos. Insulting me on my own blog is foolish enough, but going after the people who I greatly appreciate for watching week after week stepped over the bounds.
From my own conversations with you, it appears to me that your own character as a person is to be overly judgmental, unwilling to alter your own views even when they are presented calmly and reasonably, and far prefer the words of hateful individuals.
Your presence is no longer welcome here. If I see another post by you, it will be rejected.
"it appears to me that your own character as a person is to be overly judgmental, unwilling to alter your own views even when they are presented calmly and reasonably, and far prefer the words of hateful individuals."
I do believe that someone's a more than little up himself.
"From my own conversations with you, it appears to me that your own character as a person is to be overly judgmental, unwilling to alter your own views even when they are presented calmly and reasonably, and far prefer the words of hateful individuals."
Not even Michael Schmacher is that pridefully arrogant, Nelson Piquet perhaps, Lewis Hamilton certainly but not Michael (or his brother Ralf).
I'm not sure this helps, but I have a few observations about where the ads don't play and a workaround (well assuming you consider the ads not playing in certain regions a bug and not a feature), glad to hear your ad numbers have gone back up.
I live in Canada, watch Channel Awesome, at4w etc. and barely noticed when the ads stopped running a few months ago. I wondered about it found your post/video (I only started watching relatively recently and am still about 70 episodes backloged on AT4W). I have since been traveling and in the US, Italy and UK when I run the same laptop the ads DO run, so nothing on the software side I can do.
BUT Having returned to Canada I tried something different I went to blip.tv directly and logged in with their facebook/My Blip option and now as long as I am on Blip.tv logged in to facebook/My Blip or not the ads run there (well actually UK ads run genius!). So now I will try and make sure to watch on blip.tv to maximize your ad revenue seems like the least I can do.
Anyway, enjoy your show, will buy the DVD anyway.
Just an addendum to my previous comment, I'm not sure logging into blip via facebook makes any difference to me getting ads or not, the ads come and go at random with little rhyme or reason (but when they do play they are always British).
Glad to hear that your ad views went back up, hope that continues. I also hope Blip manages to pick up some new Canadian advertisers.
In the meantime I've bought your DVD and its arrived. So now I just need to watch it.
Wow, great article, I really appreciate your thought process and having it explained properly, thank you!
About the reposting on YouTube thing (mentioned in the video description, though not mentioned in the video itself)
Well, although I would love to view you videos, for whatever reason, Blip.tv does not work on my computer and/or Internet connection. I have tried multiple browsers, different cookie settings, and of course, trying it with and without the adblocker and script blocker (some buggy ads are known to sometimes not load and make the video not load with it). Sadly, nothing I do works. :(
It's not just you, It's also Doug Walker's stuff, and pretty much anything on Blip.tv.
Also, a quick Google search shows I am not alone. There has been a mildly popular support post on this that was opened in 2010, and some people still saying they are having this issue as of this year.
This basically means my only recourse is to watch new episodes on YouTube. Is that a valid reason to watch on YouTube in your eyes? Especially considering I am going to get the DVD, because, DVD extras man! Also, it's always nice having an off-line copy of the stuff.
The only reason why some people use the internet to watch videos is to get away from the ads. Its not that some people don't always want the ads. However sum sights put in so many that it gets annoying. For example when I started to use HULU, there were only 2 ads 30 seconds long each. But as time went on, more and more ads kept on coming. They gotten longer. So when I wen on HULU last weak, I watch about 16 ads and they were about a minute each. Some people use ad blocker's cause the ads stop the video in the middle. The Pokemon 4 ever review gotten stop'ed about 3 to 4 times in the middle of it. Each one took about 30 seconds but there were about 8 of them. They use it so that way they can wast less time with it. Which would you rather have a pop up that takes only 90 seconds to get rid of or a dozen ads that takes about a minute each. I don't mind the ads, its just some people do.
