Love that episode of MST3K: The Deadly Mantis “Canada! Our mortal enemy!”
I’ve always forgot to mention how much I love the Sniper’s “We’ll be right back” sketch. “THAT PYRO IS A SPY! (Sounds of Pyro’s flamethrower) OH GOD! NO, HE ISN’T!
An underground nation of Mole people? OF COURSE! THEY WERE BEHIND THE APOCALYPSE!
Been awhile since we’ve seen “You magnificent bastard, I READ YOUR BOOK!”
God, that ending would have been good had the writers not ruined it by have Bearded Idiot (I’m with you, Lewis. I refuse to believe this is the real Superman.) on the cover.
At least on the upside to that cover, we're reminded that the new Superman movie Man of Steel comes out this Friday. Keeping my fingers crossed that it'll be the first good Superman movie in a long time.
Nothing cures insanity like Weird Al. Good thing I saw UHF on Epix the other day. The movie's funny whenever Al does something funny. May wait for eventual Blu-Ray.
I keep noticing the ad for Kalifornia on the back. I missed the days when a movie poster shows up on your favorite magazine that excites you. I used to tear them out and hang them on my wall like they're real posters.
That's okay Kamandi, I never cared much for you either.
Did you notice those chain guns on the side ofg Vile John's ridiculous ride? They're the same exact make as the giant ass gun that Supes uses in "Superman at Earth's End." The same design repurporsed for this comic's shitty sequel.
I think it's safe to say this mini-series was a pile. I mean, it's just so badly drawn, the story is moronic and plodding, and to top it all off most of it is completely pointless. I'd be fine with them building and showing off their world, if the world was interesting in the first place.
I mean seriously? A 40-Mile wide highway? A mass grave in the Grand Canyon? Stick to Fallout my friends, that's an apocalypse that at least isn't stupid.
Hey Linkara what is you opinion on the Web Serial Worm?
I am asking because it is a horror superhero story and so it seems to me like you would be interested in it. Here is the link to the first chapter if you are interested: http://parahumans.wordpress.com/2011/06/11/1-1/
Kind of Suprised that u didnt make a reference to the fact that the Guns on Vile John's Car look exactly like the Gun Bearded Idiot was using in Bearded Idiot at Earth's End...
"Waste of Time" is right. I didn't even know it was possible to be even worse than Superman: At Earth's End, but at least that was so bad it was hilarious since it gave us lines like "Of course! Don't you know anything about science?" and "I am am man!" (Punch). This? The art was horrible, the dialogue so stupid it offends me as a writer, and the story . . . What story was that? All I saw were some contrived cliches and unrelated situations.
Though is it bad I'm looking forward to seeing Kamandi and Bearded Idiot interact together? Just to complete the full circle. I bet it's hopeful wishing that this series will end with them both dieing horribly.
Great review as always, Lewis. Nice that you got to add another Thunderdome joke.
Question: Are you stil going to review that Duke Nukem comic from your opening? I remember you saying something about it a while ago, but I wasn't sure if you'd changed your mind.
Hey, Linkara! I've been digging through the AT4W archives of Image 90s comics, mostly the works of Rob Liefeld. I like your Youngblood's Disease bit but why stop there? The grotesque proportions of these characters, from their oversize muscles to their tiny feet, could either be classified as a second stage of Youngblood's Disease or a new disease of its own. I'm thinking "Rob Liefeld Disorder" sounds appropriate. Your thoughts?
Good episode and nice way to start off unitentional sequal months
Ok serious question, how did this series last all 6 issues? were people actully buying this thing? and it got a one shot sequal?
at least Marville was made by a big name in the industry, so i get why it lasted, but this
oh and semi related since this did involve a knock off of superman, do you have any thoughts on the upcoming man of steel movie, i know movies aren't your thing, but i feel like asking
kinda appropriate, seeing how this was posted today http://noha.gulas.sme.sk/48142/hrdinovia-este-nevymreli.html I know it's in Slovak, but as far as these things go, I think everyone in the world can agree that they'd like Superman to do the same thing for their respective government
I can think of more reasons why the Grand Canyon Mass Grave is a stupid, stupid idea.
I'm not surprised that they would resort to mass graves after something like that, since they are going to need to do something with the bodies beyond letting them rot where they fell. But using the Grand Canyon is just going above and beyond when it comes to dumb.
You're going to want to cover the mass grave once its full. So the were just planning on filling the canyon with corpses? There aren't that many people living out there, and you'd be hard pressed to fill it, even if you had and army of Eric Idles wandering the planet and calling for corpses to fly back to the US to be dumped.
And to put a final cap on this plan, the Colorado River runs through the Grand Canyon, and now they've just contaminated everyone who uses river water downstream from there. Good job!
Aw, I was *SURE* you were going to make a Spoony joke when they said they were going to Arizona...
And as for shoving all the victims into the Canyon - let's not forget that the Colorado River is the primary water supply for a good chunk of AZ, never mind what clogging up the river would do for the power production of the Hoover Dam! (Yes, I lived in AZ for 20 years.) MORONS!
Speaking of backgrounds, I'm a bit surprised you didn't comment on the fact during the "I found a communicator" scene that whassername, silhouetted by the car, looks like those "check me out aren't I hot" silhouette shapes you often see on the backs of trucks.
Please, PLEASE let some insight come up as to why this exists, why writers are so obsessed with Kamandi, why this got a sequel, just...why? I'm not expecting an intelligent answer (that went out the window with the first issue), but still it must be asked: WHY?!?!?!?
Hey, this was probably the best issue out of the series!
It basically turned into a Warhammer 40000 comic, and that's always awesome!
If there's a franchise that proves that you CAN show the horrors of war and glorify it at the same time, than it is Warhammer 40000, and this comic captured it's spirit pretty damn well
Remember, Linky-boy, it does not have to make any sense, as long as it is bad-ass!
You don't think, you just WAAAGH! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7b7XB_yyBg
Great review as always! You know, given all the DC Elseworlds you've reviewed, I think it would be interesting for you to review a Marvel What if...? comic. They're diggerent from elseworlds in that usually only one thing is different, but it causes a butterfly effect that shows a different world. One I recomend is the What if Spider-Man Back in Black. It asks what if Mary Jane had been shot and not Aunt May? Answer: Spidey kills Kingpin, Aunt May disowns him, he's arrested arrested. What a load of crap http://spiderfan.org/comics/reviews/what_if_one_shots/190.html
Ah, The Long Awaited Return of Bearded Idiot! I am actually surprised you didn't make a "I AM A MAN!" joke in this review, considering it was Bearded Idiot who spawned that phrase in the first place.
Also, An Underground Nation of Mole People? I thought the Moleman was Marvel?
How many Kamandi issues are there, anyway?
Still, Good Review, Linkara! ;3 Looking forward to seeing more from you.
So the ridiculous triple-chaingun Beared Idiot would later find in the Batcave was apparently rather popular before and after the Apocalypse O_o
And I don't know what's worse: That these giant dragsters look like toy cars designed by Rob Liefeld, or that they don't actually offer any more seats than normal cars.
The lack of backgrounds is really something that puzzles me about the 90's: Artists spent so much time on drawing overdressed and overmuscled freaks with impractical guns, but doodling a wall behind them was apparently too much work?
Huh stupidity aside it's kinda funny to see Canada as one of the bad guys. Normally in American media that takes place during apocalypse times we are either cannon fodder, goody two shoes, big damn heroes or never mentioned at all.
The mole people did not only cause the Apocalypse, they also caused the end of every decent superhero show that was ever canceled! (I have a personal vendetta against the mole people, it's better not to ask questions.)
Yikes, more of Headache at Earth's End, huh? There was so much pointlessness in this issue, it makes it hard to see straight. Why did anyone think this series should've been made again? I feel like someone just wanted to show off their own mental image of what a post-apocalyptic America would be like, and this foolishness was the result.
I do think those insanely huge cars might make a neat toy, though. They're just so over-the-top that you know that people would want to play with them.
Wow. This comic is just awful. What did these people have against Jack Kirby that made this awful "Kamandi" series? I realize that Kirby's original "Kamandi" stories were an attempt to cash in on "Planet of the Apes", but they were an inventive take on the post-Apocalyptic, animals take over genre. (Plus it tied into "OMAC" in some nebulous way.)
Karl Kesel wrote a homage to "Kamandi" in "Superboy", where Superboy (Conner Kent, Kal-El's clone) is trapped in a world run by anthropomorphic animals, without his powers! "Batman: the Brave and the Bold" also had some episodes where Kamandi and Dr. Canus traveled to the present, or Batman traveled to Kamandi's time to stop Gorilla Grodd. Of course that Kamandi was brave, clever and resourceful, albeit ignorant of ancient technology, unlike the cowardly moron who calls himself Kamandi in this idiotic "Elseworlds" comic!
Well they finally got to Bearded Idiot...about time too. Took them a whole bunch of wasting time just to get to the moment and I get your rage. I sort of wonder how much further this will fall considerign we still need to get to the point of 'Superman at Earth's End'...
Then again "UHF" is an awesome movie; great usage of the "Spatula City" bit.
I find it somewhat hilarious that the Earth's End version of Kamandi shows up in an episode the Batman: Brave and Bold cartoon series. It was one of those short pre-credits adventures. And somehow, in those few minutes he was a much more interesting and well-rounded character than his comic book version.
As a native Arizonan who has always lived near the Colorado River, I was going to make a comment on just how stupid it is turning the Grand Canyon into a mass grave, considering how its the primary live support for much of Arizona and southern Nevada, but I see others have beat me to the punch.
Seriously, that part made me want to throw the writer of this stupid crap off the edge of the Grand Canyon...ah wait, if I did that he/she might contaminate the river with their stupidity. Never mind.
Lysander: The version of Kamandi seen in Brave and Bold was based on the original Jack Kirby version. Later, he ended up getting a full team-up episode. It was a fun episode. (Including a tribe of Man-Bats living in the future ruins of the BatCave.)
Those interested in a much better Elseworlds take on Kamandi should check out the collection of WEDNESDAY COMICS, which features an awesome reimagining of Kamandi as a Hal Foster style adventure strip.
Great googigly moogly is this comic bad! Now granted it went from only dumb in the first issue to drooling idiocy in this one, but still...this is BAD.
How is Kamandi even surviving out in the real world? He grew up in isolation with no one but his Holo-Slut(can't be bothered to remember her name) and Jewish Mother HAL for company. He should be a social cripple!
Why bother with the whole 'we have to get this severed finger to Lord Vile(subtle, comic, *real* subtle) or there will be a huge fight' if the huge fight is already happening?! What, did the Plot Hole decide to screw with comic reality now?
So there's a 40 mile wide highway stretching across the country. Great-how are they supposed to refuel their Monster Trucks? I have the feeling gas is in very short supply. Or do the trucks just run on feces?
As another comment pointed out, using the Grand Canyon as a mass grave is incredibly dumb-there's this little thing called the Colorado River! Good job, you just gave the remaining population the Plague!
here is a bigger question. how can super santa's costume be sooo clean and neat? it is a sad, sad day when in a post apocalyptic setting, a god damn superhero has a more reasonable attire.
still not as ridiculous as this character i recently learned of, called First Son of Zeus. some wonder woman villain. he wears the hide of a slain sea serpent, wears a sheet of its scales as a cape, has a pair of pants ala aquaman with scales, and two of the monster's fangs as punch spike things......... he looks less like a greek god and more like a dinosaur themed 60's batman villain.
There are -so many- problems with building cars like that. For one thing, you'd need a jack the size of a scissor lift to do so much as change a tire, and don't even get me started on what the gas mileage would be for a car -the size of a house.- I mean, if they're in the future, and materials are scarce, not to mention the fact that I don't think any industrialized factories survived, wouldn't they have to worry about stuff like that?
Well, anyway, I can see we've got some really bad ones in our future, and I think that's for the best. These reviews are often improved when there's lots to complain about.
"man... how do you survive all these comics every week???" He survives them with Strength, Stamina and a will of Steel, and most importantly with Klingon Blood Wine.....no wait that's only for Marville.
Forgetting for one moment most of the stories involving this premise I think that the idea of Superman in a post apocalyptic world is an interesting one. Hear me out for a moment.
With his themes of hope and aspiring to be better, along with his nickname "Man of Tomorrow" Superman represents the promise of the future, best evidenced in the comics and other media themselves by the Legion of Superheroes.
In my mind, putting Superman in a post apocalyptic setting is interesting because in such a story you at contrasting the promise of the future with a possible future where that promise failed. In such stories you can explore the question of "in such a situation do you chose to still fight for a cause that seems dead"
In that sense an ideal post apocalyptic Superman story would be similar to "what's so funny with truth justice and the American way?" In that it would have Superman defending his ideals when it seems possible that the world has turned against those ideas.
Hey Linkara, I just want to tell you something that I think you could mention in your next Miller Time this July.
Holly Robinson the character that you said you know nothing about in your Countdown Prologue video she was in Frank Miller's Batman Year One book which was her debut.
The way she was debuted was as a 13 year old prostitute living with Selina Kyle...just thought you might want to know this in case you talk about Miller's problems with woman.
Anyway great review and Bearded idiot is here...how happy are we all...
i love vile johns costume XD has an 'over the top ww2 hero' vibe to it XD
Regarding the over the top highway, I prefer to imagine some mad scientist like professor Zee just went crazy with a growth ray and sized up everything under the sun from roads to cars to guns in a hilariously doomed plan to take over the world.
Gosh, an underground bunker that extends from the east coast to arizona XD its impressive that the whole country didn't cave in
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't most of humanity die out in this comic's universe? If so, then where is Mother Machine getting power for her computers. There aren't any people to run/operate the power generators and batteries can only last for so long. If anything, she should be commanding her muscle-bound moron to find her a new power source.
By the way, Mr. Lovhaug, when are we going to learn the correct answer to the riddle that Linkara received at the end of the 2099 storyline?
*No rush, I just wanted to know how long we have to try and figure it out.*
you know, seeing you rage over this comic, I feel like I should suggest the comics based of the Warhammer 40000 franchise for you'r reviews
every single gripe you had with this comic, Warhammer 40000 has as it's basic premise
ridiculous and out-of-place outfits? check! pointless megalomaniac structures and impractical colossal vehicles, wasting precious for no reason at all? check! blatant disregard for safety and lives? DOUBLE CHECK! story-lines that end with nothing ever being achieved? check! violent disregard for common sense? SO check!
here's a little list of titles to pick from http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Category:Comics_and_Graphic_Novels#.UbttoecVOa8
Hyperion, you wouldn't happen to be the person who was trying to argue Warhammer was Star Trek as done by Rob Liefeld last time were you?
Just asking because you seem to be similarly hell-bent upon throwing the entire franchise under the bus. Limiting it to a bad mockery of any halfway decent writing.
There is a anon comment that's buggin' me because it reminds me of the Missing No arc's comment sections. Ya know when Missing No was "commenting". It's been showing up for some time now. Its message this time is barely visible, but I can read it. It said in this review You will suffer the same fate soon enough. Creepy message. I think it means Linkara will be dealt with and die in the same fashion as it was. But, I'm just speculating . Everytime I see that anon message in that format in some of the reviews it reminds of seeing the Silence and fills me the need to remember where I've seen these Anon comments As for this comic book series. It sucks because its not that good of a post apocalyptic story and I'll leave it at that because someone probable said something that I agreed with by now.
We knew it was going to happen. The Bearded Idiot has finally arrived. And now to see all the bad s--t that makes up the last two issues.
This is a waste of time. No backgrounds, plot points that end up being pointless, those huge cars roaming a 40-foot highway across the country, a mass grave in the Grand Canyon. Good God, Weird Al Yankovich made more sense than this?
Great review as usual, Lewis!

I realize that Kirby's original "Kamandi" stories were an attempt to cash in on "Planet of the Apes", but they were an inventive take on the post-Apocalyptic, animals take over genre. (Plus it tied into "OMAC" in some nebulous way.)
ReplyDeleteKarl Kesel wrote a homage to "Kamandi" in "Superboy", where Superboy (Conner Kent, Kal-El's clone) is trapped in a world run by anthropomorphic animals, without his powers!
"Let's have a secret facility underneath important infrastructure!" What are they the umbrella corporation?
ReplyDeleteWell they finally got to Bearded Idiot...about time too. Took them a whole bunch of wasting time just to get to the moment and I get your rage. I sort of wonder how much further this will fall considerign we still need to get to the point of 'Superman at Earth's End'...
ReplyDeleteThen again "UHF" is an awesome movie; great usage of the "Spatula City" bit.
I find it somewhat hilarious that the Earth's End version of Kamandi shows up in an episode the Batman: Brave and Bold cartoon series. It was one of those short pre-credits adventures. And somehow, in those few minutes he was a much more interesting and well-rounded character than his comic book version.
ReplyDeleteAs a native Arizonan who has always lived near the Colorado River, I was going to make a comment on just how stupid it is turning the Grand Canyon into a mass grave, considering how its the primary live support for much of Arizona and southern Nevada, but I see others have beat me to the punch.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, that part made me want to throw the writer of this stupid crap off the edge of the Grand Canyon...ah wait, if I did that he/she might contaminate the river with their stupidity. Never mind.
Lysander: The version of Kamandi seen in Brave and Bold was based on the original Jack Kirby version. Later, he ended up getting a full team-up episode. It was a fun episode. (Including a tribe of Man-Bats living in the future ruins of the BatCave.)
ReplyDeleteThose interested in a much better Elseworlds take on Kamandi should check out the collection of WEDNESDAY COMICS, which features an awesome reimagining of Kamandi as a Hal Foster style adventure strip.
Great googigly moogly is this comic bad! Now granted it went from only dumb in the first issue to drooling idiocy in this one, but still...this is BAD.
ReplyDeleteHow is Kamandi even surviving out in the real world?
*Waves tiny flag* Haroo, it's Bearded Idiot.
UHF is hilarious.
here is a bigger question. how can super santa's costume be sooo clean and neat? it is a sad, sad day when in a post apocalyptic setting, a god damn superhero has a more reasonable attire.
ReplyDeletestill not as ridiculous as this character i recently learned of, called First Son of Zeus. some wonder woman villain. he wears the hide of a slain sea serpent, wears a sheet of its scales as a cape, has a pair of pants ala aquaman with scales, and two of the monster's fangs as punch spike things.........
he looks less like a greek god and more like a dinosaur themed 60's batman villain.
Not gonna lie, I immediately googled Spatula City.
ReplyDeleteSilly Linkara, that's not Superman, that's Bearded Idiot. Silly Linkara.
ReplyDeleteWell, anyway, I can see we've got some really bad ones in our future, and I think that's for the best. These reviews are often improved when there's lots to complain about.
Dat's it! Dese oomies been makin' a rite grot's eer of fings! Nowz dey gots ta go an' make a mockkry o' propa orky dakka trukks!
ReplyDeleteGather da boyz! Times we showz 'em what a reel WAAAGH! lookz like!
"man... how do you survive all these comics every week???" He survives them with Strength, Stamina and a will of Steel, and most importantly with Klingon Blood Wine.....no wait that's only for Marville.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you have been asked this before, but what is your opinion of "Teen Titans Go" so far?
ReplyDelete"I'm sure you have been asked this before, but what is your opinion of "Teen Titans Go" so far?"
ReplyDeleteMy opinion is: Boy that sure is a show I don't watch because I don't have regular TV.
there is a comic called teen titans go
ReplyDeleteWait a second Bearded Idiot caused the "Second Apocalypes"?! WHAT?!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteForgetting for one moment most of the stories involving this premise I think that the idea of Superman in a post apocalyptic world is an interesting one. Hear me out for a moment.
ReplyDeleteWith his themes of hope and aspiring to be better, along with his nickname "Man of Tomorrow" Superman represents the promise of the future, best evidenced in the comics and other media themselves by the Legion of Superheroes.
Oh wait, I just described Kingdom Come, my bad.
Hey Linkara, I just want to tell you something that I think you could mention in your next Miller Time this July.
ReplyDeleteHolly Robinson the character that you said you know nothing about in your Countdown Prologue video she was in Frank Miller's Batman Year One book which was her debut.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the over the top highway, I prefer to imagine some mad scientist like professor Zee just went crazy with a growth ray and sized up everything under the sun from roads to cars to guns in a hilariously doomed plan to take over the world.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, Mr. Lovhaug, when are we going to learn the correct answer to the riddle that Linkara received at the end of the 2099 storyline?
*No rush, I just wanted to know how long we have to try and figure it out.*
"By the way, Mr. Lovhaug, when are we going to learn the correct answer to the riddle that Linkara received at the end of the 2099 storyline?"
ReplyDeleteYou've got a while. ^_~
is the puzzle related to the next storyline at first i didnt think it was since storylines continue in first week of july
ReplyDeleteadmit it, this comic would make an awesome video-game
ReplyDeletein fact, it IS already a videogame!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6chxuovrbCI
I know this has no relation to the video but what's the news about Lightbringer, is it going to become public domain?
ReplyDeleteyou know, seeing you rage over this comic, I feel like I should suggest the comics based of the Warhammer 40000 franchise for you'r reviews
ReplyDeleteevery single gripe you had with this comic, Warhammer 40000 has as it's basic premise
ridiculous and out-of-place outfits?
check!
pointless megalomaniac structures and impractical colossal vehicles, wasting precious for no reason at all?
check!
blatant disregard for safety and lives?
DOUBLE CHECK!
story-lines that end with nothing ever being achieved?
check!
violent disregard for common sense?
SO check!
here's a little list of titles to pick from
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Category:Comics_and_Graphic_Novels#.UbttoecVOa8
Hyperion, you wouldn't happen to be the person who was trying to argue Warhammer was Star Trek as done by Rob Liefeld last time were you?
ReplyDeleteJust asking because you seem to be similarly hell-bent upon throwing the entire franchise under the bus.
ReplyDeleteWill you make a vlog about Man of Steel any time soon?
ReplyDeleteI just want to note that among this comic many failures, it also fails at French at 10.29 one of the Canadians says.
ReplyDelete'Qu'est-ce que?' which is like saying. 'What is who'.
If these guys can't speak/write French why bother with it? While Canada is bilingual it is comprised mainly of English speakers.
We knew it was going to happen. The Bearded Idiot has finally arrived. And now to see all the bad s--t that makes up the last two issues.
ReplyDeleteThis is a waste of time. No backgrounds, plot points that end up being pointless, those huge cars roaming a 40-foot highway across the country, a mass grave in the Grand Canyon. Good God, Weird Al Yankovich made more sense than this?
So I take it you're not a fan of the standard first episode cliffhanger for daleks and cybermen then?
ReplyDeleteI must have missed issue 3 that or it didn't leave a lasting impression!?
ReplyDeleteWhen the world ends I'd head to AZ mostly because of the Mad Max style setting!
This is cool!
