Good stuff. I love Frankenstein: Agent of SHADE when it was running (too bad not enough people bought it to keep it around) and I'm very happy that at least Lemire is kept Frankenstein around on Justice League Dark, so the character could continue on past the series.
I have two questions though. Do you have the second volume that collects the remaining issues? Also, did I perhaps see a copy of the original Resurrection Man series trade in the opening? If so, good choice. Great book and one of the best from the 90s that DC put out.
Oh yes, Frankie strikes again! For all the whining about the New52 there are some weird and nice gems among them and Frankenstein was a really weird and interesting book. And since he turns up in Justice League Dark, he isn´t lost in cancellation! I´m afraid the Longbox will be my financial grave again this year....
Comic looks like a fun read. Though it makes sense to include the main theme from the original 1931 classic, I think this song would've accompanied the awesomeness of the comic! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOM4no5C8EU
Also, funny ending! No mortal should take away money from Moarte!
So, would say this story is something that actually benefited from being told in the reboot? I'd have to figure with the sheer number of DC titles, that at least some of should had something from it.
With a premise like that, I feel like I have no choice but to not only track down this comic, but also whatever else these characters were in before the reboot so I can figure out where this... incredible concept came from (I know what came before the reboot is most likely radically different from the current book, but I still feel like I should track it down). It's that sort of premise. It's the same as when I picked up a Deadpool comic and saw Deadpool hanging out with Benjamin Franklin's ghost; you simply have to find out how the hell any of this happened.
On another note, exactly why does Moarte have to be taxed? Does the federal government even recognize the undead? Is there a special form he has to fill out? And why does he have to pay taxes in October anyway!? Oh man, I'm not going to get any sleep tonight!
The Creature Commandos go back to the 1980s and can be found in "WEIRD WAR TALES #93, 97, 100, 102, 105, 108-112, 114-119, 121 and 124," according to the blurb for the trade that's going to be released next January.
And Moarte is truly fearless--even the Joker balked at taking on the IRS.
I love this comic to death and looked forward to every new issue. Nina and Frank were even OTP for awhile. Seriously I loved everything about this series and it was nice to see Moarte give it its due. Buy it people, you will not be disappointed.
For those sad about its cancellation, I recently met the writer, Jeff Lemire, at fan expo in Ontario. He told me to look for something coming next year when I told him about how much I hated how this thing got cancelled. So who knows, maybe Frank and Creature Commandos shall rise again, just like Moarte.
Great episode and looking forward to the next one.
Ah, Frankenstein... This was the comic that got me back into collecting! Seriously, a friend gave me the first couple issues as a present, and I was hooked! Save for that whole 'Rotworld' nonsense (seriously, that was just a waste, and an incoherent one at that!), I adored this series, and looked forward to it each month.
Yeah, I knew it wouldn't last, but at least we got a fun, creative 16 issue run to enjoy. For that, I can only be thankful to both Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt.
Love seeing the Longbox return, and even better yet that it highlights one of my favorites! Go forth Moarte, and beware the papercuts as you battle the tax collecting fiends!
That was a great video. I loved Longbox of The Damned when it came out last year. I even got some of the comics (meant to get more). And the ending was so wonderful. Go Moarte go!
@Anonymous: As to why he's paying taxes in October, the IRS can give a six month extension for tax returns, in which case the deadline would be October 15th.
I've always kinda liked to think as if he's in Linkara's basement :3 So my mind keeps putting Moarte's laugh and just random things he may be screaming into old October reviews I have been watching over. Just think, A undead Hungarian reading horror comics in a comic nerd's basement TRUE HORROR XD ...... Anyways glad to see Longbox back
This comic hits a little close to home for me, since it wasn't so long ago that I tried my hand at writing a story similar to this, gathering a ton of movie monsters and monster-types together and seeing how successfully they could be turned into a super team. I think it turned out pretty well.
I'm not sure if I agree that the monster's name -is- Frankenstein, but what I will say is that -calling- the monster Frankenstein is not -false.- The book version remains my favorite version, yet even in the book, where he's never really given a name, exactly, he often refers to Doctor Victor Frankenstein in the capacity of a maker, creator, or even a father. What else would his family/last name be, if not Frankenstein?

Great episode. Any chance of seeing some of the old Tales from the Crypt or Vault of Horror comics?

I want that to be my battle cry!
ReplyDelete"FOR THE LONGBOX!" indeed.
Faster Moarte! Kill! Kill!
ReplyDeleteWait, why does Moarte have to pay taxes if he's undead? :p
Oh my god I love comic books!
ReplyDeleteFor a just over 4 minute skit, this was a ton of fun. Holy crap that comic looks cool.
Moarte vs. Tax Collector, the battle begins!
@dragons_dusk

ReplyDeleteDid I hear you correctly: he "has been turned into a warwilf"?
ReplyDelete:D
Awesome as usual.
ReplyDeleteDC Frankenstein kicks major butt.
Would be awesome if you'd consider the first volume of Aquaman, the Trench for the Longbox.
It's practically Aliens underwater.

Accent aside :p I am really starting to like this. Good job and thank you for all the hard work that you obviously put into it.

On an unrelated note, I was looking for Dracula vs. Zorro at The Source last weekend (no luck, alas) and spotted a Dracula vs. King Arthur series.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know anything about this? Would it be better suited for the Longbox or for burning Atop the Fourth Wall? :)
Tax collectors are the scariest monsters of all.

That ending makes Moarte almost look like a member of the Addams Family.
ReplyDeleteSomehow, I can also see Moarte playing violin in his spare time.

Wait, wait. In that page introducing the cast, it says Nina transformed herself using "cutting edge eugenics"

Thank Rotbama (unfortunately that is the only Treehouse of Horror-esque name I could think of)
