Animenia: Pokémon 4Ever

After an extended production period, the next in Suede's review series is finally up! Who is the mysterious guest? Find out, today!

NOTE: As always, a reminder - the Pokémon videos are made by SUEDE. Asking me when the next one will come out is pointless, especially since it's unlikely I will be contributing much to future ones seeing as this is around the point I stopped seeing the movies. You may return to asking me about History of Power Rangers. ‎

good point when is the next episode of History of Power Rangers coming out also what do you think about Super Megafroce(I still think that the name is stupid)

That was awesome. You guys did great.
I doubt I'll like Pokemon 4ever, but it was interesting to see it being suggested that there was more to the relationship between Ash & professor Oak. But damn it Linkara, that streampunk pokemon concept sounds awesome, by the second

Yeaaaah...a little uncomfortable the scene with Jewwario asking to go to the bathroom...

Anyway, to me this movie is proto "Lucario and the Mystery of Mew" which has a few similarities such as a character from the past, a sort of green aesop related with a legendary dying(it is...complicated, to say the least), technology from the past and a friendhsip between Ash and the new character, only done much better(something to note, it is one of those stories that suffers from "we cannot bother to hold a conversation for 5 minutes, explain things and so avoiding most of the movie's dilemmas" syndrome).

I don't know if you watched it or not(ince you said you only watched up until the fourth i would guess no) but if you decide to watch it for whatever reason, i do recommend it.

I do agree with Jesuotaku that the reveal of Oak as Sammy did give a new perspective to their relationship. and of the three scenes 4kids added, i am glad they added the last one. It was such a nice character moment for Oak that i am glad we got it.

I seen worse movies then this. In my mind Pokemon 2000 was worse then this. I feel like the 8th Pokemon movie did it better (if you ever will see that movie) the time travel there was done better. That movie I can remember better then this movie. Is it just me or did Sam sound like Kaiba's brother from the first Yugioh series. Its not cool Linkara to leave suede to review the next Pokemon movie. The sad part is that this Pokemon movie is way better then any of the Gen 5 movies. In fact the 14th movie actually has 2 different versions. They did it again but changed the legendary Pokemon. Also Linkara there is another Pokemon movie coming to Japan this summer. PS why did the admen sound different here then in the other Pokemon movies you reviewed, and did you put in the sound the Tardis makes from Doctor who cause I think I heard it here.

You want people to ask you when the next history of power rangers was again. That's kind of pointless also cause if anything it slows you down with that project.I seen them all and in your mystic force review, it sounded like you didn't care anymore. I don't think you will have that one ready till some time in May, June, or July. Tell me I'm wrong. Sorry if i'm sounding a bit harsh about it,you always do a good job with that. Its just as you seen some people keep on asking you. So its kind of pointless for you to want people to ask you about that again. Anyway great review and I hope you'll be in the next Pokemon review.

Will you review the yugioh 3d bounds beyond time? It was the last thing to do with the first yugioh series and GX. Like Pokemon 4ever that movie had a limited running time in the movies and only a few showed it. It even helped out for 5ds overall story but no one knew that till the near end of the series.

Hearing Jew Wario there again was a strange experience, especially considering the joke about him just going away for a little while like Brock. The strange thing is, it really does almost seem like he could "pop back up again" a few months or years down the line... feelings like that aren't too uncommon when you've lost someone, but it's still sad to realize that such a thing is not possible. In any case, although it's a touchy issue, I respect Suede's decision to keep the episode as it was, without any edits.
I'm sad to hear that you probably won't be returning to the show, Linkara. Considering that leaves Suede as the only remaining original cast member, it makes me a little nervous about future episodes. However, I do believe that Suede has done a really great job with the series so far, so it's likely he'll continue to produce quality episodes even if it is with an entirely new team of guest reviewers.

Not knowing too much about the Pokemon world, having not played any game after Yellow save the Smash Bros. series but reading up on it...

I wonder if the odd dark capture balls used by Leadhead or whatever his name was served as inspiration for Pokemon Colosseum and its sequel, Pokemon XD...where you have to capture "Shadow Pokemon"...

Curious where this story goes now due to the...sad real life circumstances, to put it mildly. Though I could also see Suede dropping this story altogether to just continue the reviews without that kind of problem.

Anonymous said...

Uh, yeah. Sorry but that is uncomfortable. However I do get that you couldn't remove that.

And damn, what IS it with the movies and constantly breaking their own lessons?
First movie (American at least) had 'fighting is wrong' in a series where the most of the premise (and controversy) is about fighting.
Pokemon 2000 went on about how everyone could make a difference when in reality the story had a Chosen One who was the only one who could really do something. Add to that a clear message about how the Collector was so wrong for collecting Pokemon when that's the OTHER premise of Pokemon (plus they really promoted those useless Mew cards to get people to see the movie).
Now this movie outright says "it's wrong to catch Celebi" because... the guy is doing horrible things like using more than one Pokemon and wants to sell the Pokemon (which is clearly so different from all the other Pokemon we've seen who were clearly sold in the games and show).

And really, that's it. When the kid yells at the guy in the intro, I don't remember anything mentioned about Celebi being vital to the environment or anything. As far as we know, there is no reason for it to be wrong, but the kid is clearly meant to be in the right.

The Plane Pokemon, oh come on Linkara Latios and Latias are some of the coolest legendary Pokemon ever!
No seriously, do you have a problem with them?
Anyway, i say its worth your time sticking to this series up through the sinnoh movie trilogy they actually get better then most of the early ones.

Seeing how Sammy had to actively grab a panicked Celebi to be flung through time, I don't exactly think it is that dangerous to NOT stand around when one hears Celebi.
(Isn't this warning a bit pointless anyways if that lady insists on being cryptic for no reason?)

What is up with these movies teaching hypocritical morales?! That's just... bizarre o_O

Steampunk Pokemon... Mmh... I wonder how the mechanical Pokemon looked back then...

Huh, so the guardian of the forest turns into a nightmarish monster? This is basically a poor man's Princess Mononoke with time travel instead of demonic disease-worm-thingies.

P.S.: When will the next HOPR be ready? Have you already begun with Jungle Fury? What are your thoughts on Super Megaforce? Do you also think it's ridiculous they call everything from the morphers to the MegaZord "Legendary", even though everything screams "PIRATE!"? Have you finally started to watch Super Sentai?

Dear Time Travel Crunch Bear:

No, I'm not posting your horrible comment regarding JewWario.

No, I'm not posting your horrible comment concerning JesuOtaku and Spoony's leaving Channel Awesome (the events of which have been refuted by HIM PERSONALLY).

In other words: welcome to my blog, where all comments are read and approved by me prior to posting. Normally I allow all comments through. I refuse to let you take a dump on MY space, though, so kindly go to hell, where such remarks are tolerated.

Um... yeah, that scene with JewWario was a bit uncomfortable, but it was necessary since he did have a hand in this review too. But regardless, it was nice hearing him again.

I'm loving the art for your new avatars although I am seriously hoping that you might one day sport that costume as well. I'm a bit on the fence with this movie since I kind of dislike 2000 much more. You guys did a great job with the review.

In regards to Mr. Lovhaug's letter to the charming fellow known as Time Travel Crunch Bear...

*Applause* Well said, sir!

Dear Time Travel Crunch Bear:

The choice of words you used to refer to JewWario's death was insensitive at best, horribly offensive at worst. If you had merely mentioned that it was a bit awkward to see JewWario, that would be one thing. You did not.

There was absolutely no reason to bring up the twitter incident. It was literally years ago and everyone has moved on from it, including all relevant parties. Bringing it up serves absolutely no purpose in relation to a review about the fourth Pokémon movie. I shouldn't even have to tell you why she is not the "catalyst" of anything.

"Erasing my comment is a lot like Disney deleting Sunflower from "Fantasia" and then they acting like she was never in the movie. It's an ugly issue, but ignoring it won't make it go away. Unless you sincerely believe there is nothing awkward about seeing the two teaming up for a review, and you can't really believe that knowing what happened to these two."

No one has "ignored" anything except in relation to the above stuff with Spoony that has long since been resolved. And no, my decision not to let your post through is NOT like Disney deleting something from Fantasia and pretending it was never there. For starters, your post wasn't ever on here because I didn't let it go through.

"It was NEVER my intention to "take a dump" on anyone or anything, I just wanted to adress the elephant in the room."

Whether you intended to or not, your choice of words was inappropriate. And in the last few months, I've had to deal with assholes trying to troll things, state outright lies, or try to dredge up old issues for drama. I'm sure that wasn't your intention, but I'm on defensive mode and I'm not taking any chances.

I'm not exactly sure what the elephant you're referring to is. If it's the awkwardness of seeing JewWario in material, people have already commented on it. If it's concerning JesuOtaku, I've already said why that's a non-issue.

And even then, it is not YOUR job to "address the elephant in the room."

That being said, if other commenters want to see what your posts were, I will be happy to post them and let them see for themselves.

On the added Tracy and Rocket scenes, I suspect it was because Tracy isn't liked in the West and Rocket is popular. Of course that's not really a good move in a movie that's already struggling.

Great review though to be honest I do prefer the old designs for your characters better since I don't watch anime. But they didn't detract from the writing so no worries.

I am glad you included a nod to JewWario. It was kinda depressing to see him but at the same time, honorable. His contributions should be acknowledged.

I wasn't uncomfortable with Jew Warios appearance, it was great you kept him in. Its how I'd want to remember him leaving the show, with a funny joke and a smile. RIP Jew Wario the world is a little less funny without you.

Hello Linkara.

I have two questions for you:
1) What do you think about the other PR-esque shows like Beetleborgs and Mystic knights of tir na nog?
(I know that you don't remember about VR troopers, but I'm just curious)

2) Since HOPR is taking it's time (not rushing it, of course), I just wanted as a teaser to know: what did you think about the first two episodes of OO ?

BTW, is it safe to take a shot each time someone asks you when HOPR is coming out ?

Dear Lewis Lovhaug
fun fact because of this movie the GS ball in the anime, became useless as in an interview with Masamitsu Hidaka in 2008, it was explained that the GS Ball was originally going to contain a Celebi that was to be the star of a large arc of the Johto saga. However, it was decided that Celebi would be the star of the fourth movie, so the story arc was viewed as redundant and shelved. The ball was left with Kurt with the hopes that viewers would eventually forget about it. (But most of us didn't forget)

and not only that but the Dark Ball concept was used to make Shadow Pokemon (Pokémon that are being used for wrongful acts because they had the doors to their hearts shut artificially, a process created and carried out by Cipher (One of the villian teams) in the Orre region.) in the games Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness (Which included Shadow Lugia which is AWESOME)in which you have to purify all the shadow pokemon after Snagging them

Ness Prower said...

He could still be beaten by any competitive player. And Celebi...granted, it was Uber in Gen 2, and Legendaries are overpowered in the anime, but it still has 7 weaknesses...

Jermey said...

@DMaster I know about Mokuba and Sam having the same voice actors, I only said that to continue Linkara's jpke about him looking like Jaden Yuki from GX. That was not the point of my comment. The point was that this movie to me was better then 2000 but not by much, and the the 8th Pokemon movie had did a way better job with the time travel story.

Interesting bit about the added scenes here there are a few North American adaptations of anime I know of that have had added scenes to them.

Saber Rider and the Star Sherrifs has two completely original episodes for the North American release that completely change several facets of the series lore.

Robotech the movie (in addition to fusing footage from two unrelated shows), adds a new Ending to Megazone 23 where the hero is victorious instead of slumping off in defeat at the end.

I'm very much a purist when it comes to adapting works but for some reason when adapters go far enough that their adding extra scenes I become less angry and more fascinated. I don't mind the Oak scene at the end, though I do prefer the Japanese version but on the added Rocket scene. I haven't seen this movie but from your review it looks like Jesse and James disappear from the movie in-between the first run in with Iron Mask and the second? So I guess they wanted to explain that? And there's nothing wrong with a scene that's purely whimsical as long as it doesn't throw off the pacing.

Also flying boats? I suppose in a fantasy setting it makes sense that the Boat part would take less energy to use especially if that's what you're going to be doing for most of the trip? Though I'm reminded of Teddy Ruxpin's airship.

Anonymous said...

I have to STRONGLY disagree with JO, Suede and some of the commenters on the whole "Sammy is Oak" thing with the extra scenes being a good thing. I mean, consider that 4Kids had new scenes commissioned solely to shove it down our throats as a definite fact, while the Japanese version was far more subtle and gave a feeling of "maybe", allowing the viewers to decide for themselves what the deal is. But of course, in 4Kidsland, "subtlety" is an alien concept and everything has to be pounded into the dummy American kids' heads with sledgehammers. I fail to see how 4Kids treating the audience like idiots, forcing us to believe something that was left entirely up to us to view as truth or not, and going about their usual mindset of "subtlety is bad" is awesome or positive in any way. I'm with you, Lewis, 4Kids can bite my ass for blowing thousands of dollars on doing that.

Also, on a design note, lemme just say that Vicious' Sneasel looks ugly as sin. Seriously, what is with that squashed head and those way-too-long arms?

Well if you do Pokemon hero's, why do it in a musical form. If you like the rest of them try make it fun for yourself. You seem to like singing so why not? Yea I know your not going to stay with these review's so just say the admen hated your idea of singing so he kicked you out of the M M O.

I am starting to think the Admin is not really an Admin, but some guy that has a grudge against Linkara, Suede and JW. I mean what worse torture would it be than to dangle a new game in their faces but put it beyond a 13 movie distance. Luckily for me if there was a Legend of Zelda MMO I am glad Nintendo's uptight about their movie and tv rights. I would have to endure the tv series. I also agree that the mechanical Pokeball is awesome. On a more serious note, it's very sad to see JW go, but who better to take his place than JO. Just don't mention Tai X Sora or TK x Kari around her. NC learned that one the hard way. That Spoony clip was out of nowhere, but funny. I just realized Celebi's ressurection looks similar to Day of The Doctor. Maybe it's in a different context but I think Celebi copped a leg feel on Misty. Great review as always.

I didn't write it, which is what ties in to your next question: I don't write, edit, upload, or do ANYTHING with the videos aside from watching the movie with the others and record my bits for it and so I get tired of people asking me when the next one will be out when they ARE NOT MY VIDEOS AND THEREFORE I DO NOT KNOW.

"2. Why would you want people to ask you when the next history power rangers is? With what you said, that it bugs you so why ask that. Its done when its done and I get that."

I DON'T want them to. But since people still ask, I have accepted that that is my lot in life and will make a joke out of it.

2.The 8th and 13th Pokemon movies do use a time travel story like this one and both of those movies did a way better job with it. (Forgot to say that)

3. Thanks for the explanation of the game of chess.

4. As for the history of power rangers, good luck with the next one, and what do you think about power rangers dino charge that's coming out next year. I'm just shocked that this one won't have a yellow ranger for the first time.

I really don't know if Suede can continue the Pokemon movies reviews after Jew Wario's tragic death. I mean, Jesu Otaku did a fine job looking at the positive aspects of Pokemon 4ever, and I suppose she can appear in future Pokemon reviews, but it won't be the same without Jew Wario . . .

Anyway, good crossover episode.

That was a great review Linkara I've been waiting almost a whole year for this but these reviews probably take awhile to make especially with the tragic passing of Justin.

I have to admit when I was a kid I really liked this movie...but now I kind of see some of the plot holes of Mr. Maruader's little plan to take over Team Rocket.

Oh by the way I'd like to point out a mistake you made in the review about Mr. Iron Mask not just going back in time and killing Giovanni as an infant. That wouldn't work because Team Rocket existed before Giovanni became Leader a Japanese CD drama that tied into the First Movie revealed that the leader of Team Rocket before Giovanni was his mother, Madame Boss...yes that was her name.

Anyway you also mentioned Ash's parents. Currently I'm half way through plotting out a Fanfiction storyline I'm writing that reveals what happened to Ash's father before the first episode of the anime and I'm going to try and make it as sad, depressing and tearjerking as I can make it. I was wondering if when its finished, you could take a look and tell me what you think of it.

Also do you know if JesuOtaku has a PO box or something? If she does do you what its address cause I'd like to send her some fan mail at some point.

Anyway this was a great video even if it may be your last one with Seude since you mentioned on Tumblr that Heroes bored you to death.

See you tommorow with A-Team #1

You know, I think the term "Evil Pokemon" could be taken to mean Shadow Pokemon. I know that Shadow Pokemon weren't made until Gen 3 and this movie is a Gen 2, but the idea of a malicious or "heartless" pokemon that is superior to normal pokemon, sounds an aweful lot like Shadow Pokemon from the Orre region. Perhaps The Iron Masked Jeffery stole the Shadowification technology that Team Cypher used and that is why it works that way

Also back when you reviewed the third movie you said "am I strong enough to get through the advanced generation" and know it looks like you not doing a single movie from the advanced generation. There is a plot hole right there. I now that sounds a little strong, it just it doesn't make seance to bring it up, and not go into it.

Linkara, my personal opinion on the matter is you should continue the crossovers. I mean, think about it: starting with the fifth one, it'll be pretty similar to what you're doing with H.O.P.R right now. Think of it more as an opportunity to view the movies you haven't seen yet. Now, I'm not saying that you should. I'm just saying you should consider the thought. It's just my opinion.

Good luck with the next history of Power rangers. I seen overdrive and I think it is one of the worst power rangers seasons. But I think mega force is worst then overdrive. Also when you reach samurai will you do it as 2 different seasons like mighty morphin?

I know how old Ash is,(or how old he should be.) If you go on you tube, and type in how old is Ash you will find a video showing how old Ash should be. He's actually supposed to be 16. I do think making him 10 years old is just pushing it. Anyone who had seen the short in the third movie know at least a year went by. Also what do you think about the dubbers returning to fix the first movie. Remember when the got the names wrong in the first movie? They fixed them. I guess the people working on the show saw your review of the first movie and fixed them. I like that they did that. I hope you stay for the 5th movie and good luck with your next bad comic
