The continuing adventures of people with really stupid, contrived nicknames!

Previous US-1 Reviews:
Issue 1
Issue 2

  1. The jokes in the credits are actually something of a Marvel tradition. I've been reading some of their stuff from the '60s lately and they have it in nearly every issue.

  2. Gotta have some AC/DC to go with something like this!

In the case of The Hobbit situation that I read on Twitter, I think it's a good idea to make it a December event to coincide with the third and final Hobbit film. I'm a fan of those movies, so I think it would be great to have the reviews in December!

  3. For a moment, when you said Ulysses Soloman Archer; I misheard you, so I thought you said “Ulysses Jonathan Archer”. ^^”

If this is Marvel and this Ancient Highwayman is suppose to be Devil like…does that mean he wants Archer to sell his marriage or something?

It’s quite surprising all the cameo’s that there are in this, but even then I got to appreciate that it doesn’t take itself too seriously and is treating this more like a comedy than it is a serious plot.

And it’s nice that you have a JewWario Cap on the Shelf too.

    Nice Review though, Linkara.
Looking forward to seeing more from you. ;3

  4. I had forgotten this series even HAD a supervillain, and now it has 2. please do issue #4 soon. I want to see all 12 issues.

  5. The editor was Ralph Macchio? As in KARATE KID Ralph Macchio?

  6. Liked what you did here with the review. Especially the song you used this week. Is this the first time you've used AC/DC for a review? Either way, I'd like to see you use their music a little more often.

  7. surprised you did not do a "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" joke

also, wasn't that character design based on Lee Van Cleef?

  8. I probably won't get a better opportunity to ask this: if anyone knows where I could find issues 6, 11, and 12 of this series I'd really appreciate it; those are the only three I'm missing.

And thank you, Linkara, for introducing me to this series in the first place!

  9. According to the credits in the comic, it was edited by..Ralph Macchio? For some reason that feels like it could have been worthy of a joke.

  10. AT4W just got better because of ACDC.

As for Flamer, it couldn't be an innuendo, maybe he's an internet troll.

  11. I feel like I should get into this series. Where else are you going to read a comic series with a trucker driving a truck with weapons and grenades?

Plus, your clip with Nimoy makes me wonder how you feel about him having lung disease.

  12. I totally called the old man secretly being the Highwayman. Even though it made absolutely no sense.

Also, was I the only one who noticed that this comic was apparently edited by the Karate Kid?

  13. I'm more surprised that you've done this show for five years, and you STILL haven't reviwed a comic starring Iron Man, Thor or Hulk outside of Secret Origins Month and Ultimates. It's quite frankly baffling. The fact that many of the Marvel comics you review don't even have Marvel characters in them (like Transformers, Brute Force or the upcoming A-Team) doesn't help.
Then again, you are more of a DC fan, so you have the right to not review comics that don't interest you.

  14. Oh US-1 your quality is near Shakespeare when compared to marville.

  15. Whenever I see a character with a bushy white mustache like that, I'm reminded of Dracula as he was described in the original book.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The whole Highwayman telling his origin to US is weird.
    SPOILER
Later in the series its established that the Highwayman was lying and he has no supernatural powers, he got everything from aliens, I am not kidding, aliens are involved in this. I have no idea wether this was the original plan or if it was a retcon.
However years later, a writer on Ghost Rider wanted to use the Highwayman and out of nowhere he was now a real demonic trucker and his original origin was now real, with no explanation given of how this works with the previous alien explanation.

  17. You could probably go through these series faster if you reviewed more than one issue at a time, just saying.

  18. Who else thinks that RE-Tread sounds like a name from GI Joe?

Also "Liar Lair Pant on Fire" come on Linkara that was an easy one.

  19. "Also "Liar Lair Pant on Fire" come on Linkara that was an easy one."

Couldn't think of a way to integrate it into a joke.

  20. Since I got the Doctor Doom/Doctor Strange graphic novel where Strange officially gets the title of Sorcerer Supreme, the Aged Genghis cameo made me crack up majorly. I'd like to imagine that took place on the very same day that both Doom and Strange visited him, that was like Americans wandering in for Banal reasons day.

"First some guy came in complaining about his face and he beat me up, then some guy wanted his hands fixed but he was nice and gave me some bandages... but the last guy he wanted enternal youth so he could drive trucks for ever I just laughed at him."

And truck based innuendo is obviously of a higher caliber, loved that MST clip, I hope we hear more of it (the innuendo in general not the MST clip) in future installments.

  21. Useless sidekicks who are more of a hindrance than a help to the heroes:

    -Retread

-The Cutie Mark Crusaders (from "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic")

-Zach the Fifth Turtle (from the 1987 "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" show)

-Jar Jar Binks (from "Star Wars")

    -Chibi-Usa (from "Sailor Moon")

    -Scrappy Doo (from "Scooby Doo")

-Kate (from the 2006 TV show "Robin Hood")

-Wheelie (from "Transformers", both Generation 1 and the Michael Bay movies)

    -Haymitch (from "The Hunger Games")

"I'm more surprised that you've done this show for five years, and you STILL haven't reviwed a comic starring Iron Man, Thor or Hulk outside of Secret Origins Month and Ultimates."

I'm hoping he tackles something from the Heroes Reborn experiment, where several prominent Marvel characters (including Iron Man and Thor) were sent over to Image Comics to be rebooted by Rob Liefield. From everything I've heard, that was a clusterfuck of epic proportions.

  23. For the old man art, remember what a design does for the creator. Balding emphasizes age when a face might not, the mustache makes the face distinct with something easily drawn and mustaches can be used to either make a person seem more respectable or villainous.

  24. As someone who lives in Wisconsin I have to say, yes he was.

I know this seems silly to point out, considering this is a world with a truck that fires grenades, but flares are usually single use devices.

I always knew that US1 was part of the Marvel Universe since I first heard of it in the pages of She-Hulk. Incidentally, they used that issue to tie up some loose ends for US1 so you may want to look at that issue too. It would be appropriate considering that run of the She-Hulk had her routinely breaking the fourth wall.

  25. Gloriously hilarious. US-1 gets more absurd by the issue and I think they're just rolling with it now. (though from what I hear that's different from how bizarre Team America got around the same time; another toy-line Marvel made comics of that was way more infamous and worse) And some funny bits there...though somehow I imagined the random "You're pants are on fire" Statler and Waldorf bit thanks to the pants bit.

Oh and its never bad to have a Patton clip in this show.

  26. I think that "devil" figure didn't look like Mephisto. I immediately thought he looked like Nightmare. Now, that doesn't make any sense, but that's who he looked like.

    ReplyDelete
  27. My only regret about this issue...

You didn't make any mention of the Kool-Aid Man ad on the back of the issue.

Speaking of, ever gonna tackle his comics again? There is at least one more issue, with a villain with the catchphrase "Roast My Toast".

    ReplyDelete
  28. No but now I want rewatch a review of the game Big Rigs.
What kind of ending was that comic. I mean I was enjoying this till the issue ended.
    Keep up the good work.

  29. US-1 -- a bad comic that is still ten times better than Marville, Bill Jemas's atrocity against mankind that dares call itself a comic book.

I mean, a truck with a trucker with gagdets and weapons straight out of James Bond and a demon trucker with his army of henchmen -- this is a defining example of over-the-top epic silliness.

  30. Seeing the three US-1 episodes back to back got me rather interesting in what happens.

So I took a look at what's to come for the remaining 9 issues. Let's just say that the story goes into quite unexpected territory. And while the true identity of Midnight isn't surprising, the true identity of the Highwayman is.

    ReplyDelete
  31. So, good review. Really liked the old man Withers part, if only because I'm a sucker for that cliché bad guy reveal. And the hilarious innuendo suggestions with retread.

Anyway, quick question out of nowhere, why does Welshy seem to hate you?

  32. "Anyway, quick question out of nowhere, why does Welshy seem to hate you?"

Welshy doesn't hate me! We kissed three times at Magfest!

    I'm not even joking. XD

  33. Hey, don't diss Wide Load so easily. In Avengers and the Infinity Gauntlet, she actually got Doctor friggin Doom to stand down.

This is a stupid comic, but is it any less stupid than a lot of what Marvel was making in the 80's? After hearing about Team America (not that one, the 80's comic) I wonder.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm inclined to agree with the above.

US-1 does get plenty more stupid in some of the later issues, but from reading up on the tail end of the run I find it actually does get a little gripping. Well, gripping as far as US-1 goes.

I just feel that perhaps saying it's crap, even if its enjoyable crap, may not be the best way to describe it by the time its through.

  35. You know what I have been missing for a long time.

Superman vs. The Terminator #2, I honestly want to know what happens in the next issue. Or do you have to wait until the next Mechakara arc.

  36. This needs to be turned into a movie with a big budget. We NEED insane truck-fu action on the silver screen.

And since this in continuity with the Marvel universe, does that mean we might see a Ghost Rider crossover?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Grenades?

    Is U.S. 1 Mega-weapon?

    Mega-weapon! Mega-weapon!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Ha! The Highwayman really must be the best trucker of all time if he was able to drive to the Ancient One's temple...in the Himalayas.

  39. Are we going to see the last two forms of Pollo in the next storyline?

It's been so long since you started building them

  40. "Are we going to see the last two forms of Pollo in the next storyline?

Yep! You've seen Ground Pollo once already, just haven't needed to use him yet, but Combat Pollo will definitely premiere in this storyline. ^_^

  41. Sorry to go off-topic, but the idea just came to me: Have you considered doing a review of Grant Morrison and Dave McKean's "Arkham Asylum?" It'd make a fantastic April Fool's Day review.

  42. I wonder if US-1 ever lost sales, because people mistook them for reprints of the first issue.

This was a pretty fun one. I love high concept and ludicrous stuff.

Also, at 6:45, the highwayman -does- look a bit like Max Buck, now that he mentions it, though he's obviously a classier dresser. I wonder what epoch it was when truck drivers typically wore vest and collar shirt-with-tie combos.

  43. Different Ralph Macchios. Both have Wikipedia pages. The comics one is apparently nicknamed "Karate Kid" because of the other. :)
