Meant to put this up last week, but been busy with lots of stuff and there were a whole bunch of other cameos and videos I wanted to put up sooo, here's Liz and I from last week seeing the Robocop remake 2 months after it came out or whatever.
To this day, I hold that Minority Report tells a much better story about crime and crime prevention than Robocop ever did, both for the 1987 and 2014 versions.
Hell, I think The Winter Soldier communicated about the importance of individual freedom in the digital age better than Robocop ever did.
I think tha the "city look good" is one point about the "perception", after all this time the media and the bussiness are really related. The need on the thougt must be created, being real or not.
I never saw the first Robocop so I barely cared when this movie came and went. I hear that while it's not a total train wreck, it's still unnecessary. But I hear some people also like the remake, so there we go.
On another note, I know this is unrelated, but what do you make of this recent Marvel anime released in Japan that essentially mixes Marvel characters with Digimon concepts?
Opening with the occupation of Iran and having the ED-209 obliterate an Iranian teenager for holding a knife that couldn't even scratch the robot if he had 10 years put me in a bad mood. I knew it would be one big political sermon from there.
I despise the drone program and targeted assassinations, so I agree with the film's anti-drone message. But if I want a sermon, I will go to church. I don't want it in an action movie.
i would say the thing about the family conspiracy could be explained by what i call "the retreat of the chosen one". the idea that someone non-important, for some unclear reason, has to be the one to save the day and bassically have the world around them. this happened with twilight with Bella, this piece of cardboard who, for some reason, is worth to other pieces of cardboard to fight over another bunch of pieces of cardboard. With the "fmaily conspiracy" that gives an explanation as to why the characters are involved in the events of the story. it is not a story about them but a story about their parents past that they get involved somehow. or that would be the idea i believe.
Am I the only one pissed that Linkara is talking about the Robocop remake when he should be talking about "Captain America: The Winter Soldier"?
And the fuck is Iron Liz doing here? Didn't Linkara dump her for Vida? Wasn't it official that Linkara pretty much replaced Liz with Vida? Isn't like like Spoony doing a vlog with Scarlet?
"Am I the only one pissed that Linkara is talking about the Robocop remake when he should be talking about "Captain America: The Winter Soldier"?"
I haven't seen it yet. I don't normally like going to see a movie on opening weekend - it's too crowded.
"And the fuck is Iron Liz doing here? Didn't Linkara dump her for Vida? Wasn't it official that Linkara pretty much replaced Liz with Vida? Isn't like like Spoony doing a vlog with Scarlet?"
I didn't "dump" Liz. Viga and I didn't get together until two years after Liz and I broke up. She and I are still friends.
"Seriously, Linkara, what the hell is going on?"
And finally, what the hell business is it of yours who I'm seeing and who I'm friends with?
I honestly had no desire to see this movie. The original film was fine as it is. Don't fix what isn't broken.
Now that isn't to say that I am totally against reboots. I am half/half on them, personally. For instance, I said once before that The Amazing Spider-Man was alright by me because Spider-Man 3 left such a bad taste in my mouth. It wasn't just a shitty sequel like Star Trek V or Thor 2, it was the culmination of 3 films worth of story, characterization and build up and what do we get? THE BUTLER DID IT.
Sorry about that tangent. Point being, that film needed to be rebooted. A reboot that I can't get behind is the Batman/Superman crossover. This isn't like the Avengers which has been built-up slowly over five years. NO, NO. This decision was made A WHOLE YEAR after The Dark Knight Rises came out, a film which while not perfect was an enjoyable and satisfying culmination of three films something which Spider-Man 3 wasn't. THERE IS NO NEED FOR THIS. IT IS TOO SOON. DON'T FIX WHAT ISN'T BROKEN.
Sorry again for the long and ranty post. Nice to see Liz back. I know she has her own life and that is why she can't be in the videos anymore. I am not holding that against either of you. My only regret is that we didn't get and IN-UNIVERSE explanation for why her CHARACTER is not on the show anymore. You thought her last appearance was satisfying. I didn't. But it's not that big a deal and I won't presume to dictate how you write your stories. Again, an opinion I needed to get off my chest.
I saw this one not long after release. As an update I thought it did well enough since it was looking at different issues than the original stuff did. How well it handled it, of course YMMV.
FYI Lewis, "Honest Black Angry Random Sins Guy" is most likely "The Fifth Cutie Mark Crusader" from the Doctor Strange review comments, as well as "Tofu Eggs and Bacon" from the Game Boy #3 comments. He seems to like giving himself long, weird names and then making extremely rude and condescending comments about your personal life. I know it's possible that it's just three different awful people, but it just looks suspicious to me.

The thought HAD crossed my mind, but I try not to throw out those kinds of accusations without proof.
I liked the movie and I liked this review, so thank you. Just two things:
1. The suicide bombers in the beginning weren't saying they don't want to hurt anyone - they said "our goal isn't to kill Americans, it's to have people see us die on TV" or something to that effect. It's not that they don't want to kill people - it's just that having people see what they did is a higher priority for them than body count.
2. I was surprised to hear that Liz thought the anti-corporate message wasn't as clear as in the original. This one didn't even have "good" corporate guys like the original - they were all greedy and willing to do anything to get their goal.
The Cinema Snob said that this movie doesn't really take a position on drones. Really, I don't know how the movie could have been any clearer about any of these things. It's actually blunt to the point of being distracting, which is one thing that made me like it less than the original. Then again, in a world where people think Wolf of Wall Street glorifies its protagonists, I can understand - if not condone - directors being a lot less subtle than before.
Okay, I'm sure Liz didn't mean it this way, but that whole "I don't like comics anymore because I've grown up and matured" spiel came across as condescending and insulting, not simply to Lewis, but to his fans. I mean...geez. That's some Grade-A sneering right there.
I just wanna point out one thing about the TMNT movie, is that well Bay isn't exactly making this movie, I mean he's only producing it. An the fact is, honestly screw those 80's movies and that Cartoon with it. Just, it's clear this is trying to be more based on the comic, rather than the movies. So ya know, I'll welcome that compared to that 80's crap.
Why does everyone act like Jonathan Liebesman is some visionary genius that is gonna rescue the Ninja Turtles movie from the clutches of the evil Michael Bay?
For fuck's sake, people, Liebesman made "Battle: Los Angeles" and "Wrath of the Titans", do you honestly think him directing instead of Bay is gonna make this movie good?
Hell, is there any real difference in "Battle: Los Angeles" and the tone and style of your average Michael Bay movie?
I thought this movie was good. It's better than I expected it to be (I thought it would suck) and I'd be fine if they turned this into a franchise. And as to whether or not this is better than the original Robocop...it's a draw for me.
I'm glad to see Iron Liz once again. I always loved her videos both on her own and her work with you. The internet is at a loss with her not doing it anymore (though understandable as she focuses on her career.) I'm quite glad you two still get to hang out and see movies together, though.
The problem is that we nowadays think more of the 80s/2000 turtles when talking about TMNT, rather than the comics.
Bringing the franchise closer to its roots also is a bad move because those roots are a parody of overly melodramatic wannabe-noir comics along the lines of this blog's old buddy Frank Miller's Daredevil run. Bringing them back to their roots would be VERY jarring for modern audiences.
And lastly: They are not doing that. The origin of the turtles is different from all previous incarnations, so this will be pretty much a Micheal Bay take on that.
And now finally about this Robocop:
Yeah, it sucked for what it was but could have been. Honest to Thor, first time I saw the new look I dismissed it as some new G.I. Joe knock off. It was that unrecognizable to me. And if the movie starts with getting the look wrong and then proceeds to make every possible mistake* the remake could have made aside from being directed by someone like Micheal Bay or Frank Miller, then it fails on all accounts and should be ashamed to call itself Robocop.
Also, Hollywood, get some non-adaptations off the ground. Seriously, the people working there can't be as creatively bankrupt, now can they? Regardless, they are going to run out of name-recognition stuff within the next decade anyway.
*(Spiffy-clean crime-ridden environment, main actor being robotic and wooden long before he becomes a cyborg, half-assed satire and not enough action scenes to make up for it and MANY more)
To this day, I hold that Minority Report tells a much better story about crime and crime prevention than Robocop ever did, both for the 1987 and 2014 versions.
ReplyDeleteHell, I think The Winter Soldier communicated about the importance of individual freedom in the digital age better than Robocop ever did.
Lewis, were you suffering from allergies or something? You were blinking practically every second.

When can we expect your Vlog on CA: The Winter Soldier? In 2 months, or soon?

Hey, I was wondering what happened to Liz. Good to see her back. Would be cool to see her and Viga as a few kick-ass Valkyries in a future episode.
ReplyDelete"Am I the only one pissed that Linkara is talking about the Robocop remake when he should be talking about "Captain America: The Winter Soldier"?"

Wait, Liz was in a suicide bombing?!
