As I said on twitter just a moment ago: Good thing you choose designs that don't deviate from Pollo's classic look. After all, even his shadow still says Pollo.
If he's backlit, you can instantly recognize him. With some of the more rounded shapes (and yes, I originally had a "football/tennisball" pollo in mind as well as entry #270 from the final montage), you would probably ask "who's that" instead of instantly going "Hey, it's Pollo, here to save the day."
That aspect of "instant recognition" (I'm sure there's a technical term for it, but I can't remember it, probably something like "pattern recognition") was ultimately what led me to abandon the "curved" appearance and go with the "angled" look. (Not that it made me a better artist - but that's a completely different story.)
(Sorry, I didn't mean to turn this into "Behind the designs", Linkara. It just happened.)
But seriously: Those designs picked are pretty awesome and I kind of wish I had a bit of the creative skills those designers have.
Congratulations for winning this contest, dear winners!
First congratulations to everyone, and especially to the winners, they were well deserved in their places!
Second: Awww, I love how you go trough so many designs and give props/honor them to the very last. It was worth the wait.
#269 I like VERY much for several reasons and is my fav, even if I see why it never had a chance due to practicality of propmaking. It is just so slick and organic while being still a robot, things I always love. I also love the very first of the runner ups, it's just so cute!
Also I am of course imature and giggle about you trying to say my surname, it's okay, our alphabet works differently. Even the people at the news fail at it.XD You can laugh at my spelling in return, it's a lot worse...
I smiled big when I saw your choice for the battle Pollo. As for the standard model, there were some in the runner ups that I thought looked better and I was wishing you had picked instead, but great visuals don't always equal great function and I can't argue with all those notes schematics that came with the model you chose, Linkara. I can't wait to finally see Pollo back on the show.
So, since you'll now have Pollo back, and since you've also got Tom Servo, what do you think the chances are of you doing another MST3K-style riff like you did way back in the day?(wish I could watch that, but all I can find is just some trailers on Youtube).
Interesting designs. The one that had the TARDIS for a body almost made me do a spit take. 3 or 4 of the honourable mentions looked like they were going in a similar direction, but a bit more complicated than I had in mind for what I was going to submit.
What I like about the battle Poyo is be cause of the torso look to it. It almost looks like it was designed to have arms and legs added to it make it like a Gundam or Megazord.
Also to picture that that Fernando guy made was very well done, though I'm not sure if it was to be a floating like moldel or not cause it just kind of looks like a statue (to me at least).
I wish you would still make the chicken redesign. The Linkara character argues with everyone he works with, and Pollo could be threatened with the chicken body if he acts up too much. Could use it as punishment for when he does do something bad or used as a mockery for Mechkara.
Heya. It's Andrew here. Hey wow, thanks Linkara! That's awesome.
I'm not an engineer, just for the record I'm a (currently unemployed, yay), cartoonist/comic artist.
My webcomic is here: http://www.townsvilletale.com.au/
It updated every Wednesday (Australian time). I'll post the drawings to the blog on the site this upcoming Wednesday (Australian time), if anyone's interested in seeing them more clearly, or hearing my thoughts on them.
As I am Ryan Hewitt, I would like to note that I did NOT use any Transformers parts in my miniature - it's all modeling wood, tape, and GI Joe components. Yes, even the collar is built from two pieces of a GI Joe figure's jetpack - what figure it was escapes my memory, sadly, as almost all action figures I purchase are bought solely to be taken apart for custom projects. I don't exactly take time to memorize the figures.
And for those who may have been wondering(yes, you, Michael McDoesn'texist), yes: The collar was inspired by a Vorlon encounter suit.
Oh, the head is also a Halo 3 Spartan Recon head with the eyepiece and beak added. That figure was not purchase for dissassembly as with GI Joe figures - It was a poorer quality run that fell apart on it's own and I salvaged parts.
Thank you for the chance and for the mention! XD I'm glad even the joke entries left an impression! XD
I like the Battle mode the most! Reminds me sort of of the ABCRobot form Judge Dredd! The "steampunk" one I like and the reason it looks kinda steampunk-like is it's textured to look like forged metal like iron or steel!
I'm curious now of how you're going to use most of these design like the battle one as a suit or a static prop on green-screen?
Now Pollo has his own Knight Gallery and if you ever get some one who can do large scale CGI graphics you can have your own version of "Batman: Brotherhood of the Bat" style story! Incase no one gets the reference http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_Knight_Gallery "- 50 years into the future, Batman is dead, and the planet is within the grip of a plague set off by Ra's al Ghul. He uses Bruce Wayne's rejected costume designs to create a league of costumed assassins, who are eventually confronted by Tallant, the son of Batman and Talia al Ghul.
Is it sad I forgot all about this contest until I saw this on TGWTG this morning!?
Thats mighty odd 232 (the version I sent) Isn't the final design I sent to you...something must have gone rather odd with the file since it had text and few other do dads on its noting it's design with features....how peculiar and slightly annoying.
Ah well. Kudos to the winners with some great designs. Look forwards to seeing them as real puppets soon.

To me, the head looked like Shockwave's head. When Lewis said that he thought it had parts from a Transformer, that's what I thought he was going to point out.

It did, but since I was in a rush to finish the video, I just right-clicked and copied the image file in the PDF, which didn't include the text or some of the diagram info. Don't worry, the full entry did arrive. ^_^
Oh phew that's a weight off my mind. XD I was kinda panicking thinking I had screwed up there.
Still, the winners deserved those places. And it seems an awesome idea of Pollo to have multiple bodies. Gives room for story and and simple comedy ideas.
The sheer volume of fans you have is astounding, these are dedicated folk Lewis, and it was a great opportunity to bring the AT4W community together. Some people like myself can't always see you at cons, so it's awesome that we can band all together and do something and be part of the show no matter where we are!
17 was the one i sent. Though I did not win, nor intended to in the first place, I am forever grateful that it was displayed none the less. When I saw a chance to display some creativity I jumped for it. Most of the design was for show such as the multiple eye colours and the chicken leg like features but what I was mostly proud of was the Blue soul and steel heart. I remember thinking about that during the mechakara storyline and thought "What if that was really not being poetic, but a literal sense." When I thought about how you did the "Piece of the world is missing." As a name rather than the prophecy it got me thinking of the steel heart and blue soul. The rest was inspired by both the meaning of pollo "chicken" In which I gave him wings and feet in a sense. The silent hill alternate endings were the inspiration for the coloured eyes and the hat was in reference to mechakara. I was thinking what if this univere's Pollo, becomes a good version of him.
Yes number 176, haha. But seriously I am looking forward to seeing the upgraded Pollo plural on the show, and while it may not have been intentional, I am kinda glad that some of the ideas I put in my submission, will be utilised. Still I must say to the designs before mine, some were awesome, others made me raise my eyebrows, alot were just the cutest little things, and one or two were just ones that looked like upgraded versions of what I put in (though to be fair since those ones came first, I should say that mine are downgraded versions of theirs).
Linkara wouldn't publish my original comment after I lost and didn't even get an honourable mention, so instead I'll say - congratulations to the winners.
Most of your drawings were awesome, and you deserve to win!
"Linkara wouldn't publish my original comment after I lost and didn't even get an honourable mention, so instead I'll say - congratulations to the winners.

...I don't think I ever saw it. ^^; The only things I've been rejecting lately have been spam comments or duplicate comments.
Congrats to the winners and really amazing work for everyone; it was pretty cool and fun to see the different ideas all based around Pollo and Linkara has the right idea to show off all the entries. I look forward to seeing them when they make their official appearance in the show.
That actually raises a question Linkara, will the new Pollo have the same voice, or will he be getting a new voice modulator, or are you keeping that a secret for the official reveal?
Congrats to the winners, and even the honorable mentions!
Now that that's done. I did come up with an idea of my own for all three. Use the blue color to your advantage, in a technical aspect, to give Pollo a 'cloaking device' of sorts. Blue is also used for chroma-key effects and it'd be useful for infiltration at some points, if called for.

I like the steam-punk Pollo the best. I can't wait to see it on the show!
ReplyDeleteI smiled big when I saw your choice for the battle Pollo. Holy crap! The winners look epic! I wish i discovered this show a bit earlier. I would have entered. But I need to know. When will we see the winners?
ReplyDelete@Mitchell Martinez Here ya go. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2-p7OEsck4&list=FLSSqdSyGE2JFbrq4DgJ57qQ&index=8&feature=plpp_video
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the winners! the designs look awesome! I can't wait to see them in action :)
ReplyDeleteIs it more or does the Ground Model Pollo vaguely resemble a Dalek? Makes me wonder if that factored into Linkara's decision. ;)
ReplyDeleteInteresting designs. The one that had the TARDIS for a body almost made me do a spit take. 3 or 4 of the honourable mentions looked like they were going in a similar direction, but a bit more complicated than I had in mind for what I was going to submit.
ReplyDeleteFiery Little One
Three new forms, none of them have working arms - Linkara you troll.
ReplyDeletePollo is gonna be pissed. XD
What I like about the battle Poyo is be cause of the torso look to it. It almost looks like it was designed to have arms and legs added to it make it like a Gundam or Megazord.
ReplyDeleteAlso to picture that that Fernando guy made was very well done, though I'm not sure if it was to be a floating like moldel or not cause it just kind of looks like a statue (to me at least).
I am just speechless, thank uou so much, I shall be emailing you soon.
ReplyDeleteAlso big props to all who paricipated, there were a ton of awesome designs in that show reel.
I think I'd heard of Fernando before.
ReplyDeleteThink 64, 26, 142, 185, 200 were best.
148 was great but would've been extremely hard to build.
159 seems like it wants to exterminate.
182 was K9.
185 was very simple, in a good way.
222 was a fun ground mode
231's hilarious and well illustrated.
261 was unusual.
265 looks familiar.
266-267 are great designs, but feel a mite serious.
128 was great but impractical and very little like Poyo in "feel"
196 is scary. It's like Bayformer Poyo. In a good way.
I will say that for ground mode, you might look at the droid-builder's group to get it functional.
Loved seeing all these designs.
I wish you would still make the chicken redesign. The Linkara character argues with everyone he works with, and Pollo could be threatened with the chicken body if he acts up too much. Could use it as punishment for when he does do something bad or used as a mockery for Mechkara.

There was no 'original comment', I was just implying I'd made a really nasty sour grapes one.
