Animénia: Pokémon The Movie 2000

Suede, JewWario, and Linkara take a look at the second Pokémon film!

NOTE: Yes, I know I'm wearing the mobile emitter. This was filmed a while ago and thought it would be out sooner.

  1. I was asking myself where the promise of the rest of the pokemon movies was?

I suppose this things will be a yearly event?

  2. Great review!
Good (and hillarious) way to deal with the people that got offended last time with the intro.
The plotholes in your review set-up pointed out at the start, make me think that my hope of it actually turning out JesuOtaku was just messing with you may be true.
    Bu.. but I like Tracey..
Does the green haired girl's hair look like a mix of Nurse Joy and Gold to anyone else?

    NITPICKS AWAY!!!:

Moltres is fire- and flying type so the not very effective and super effective cancel out, meaning ice attacks have normal effectiveness against Moltres

Pokémon don't automaticly listen to you if you catch them, remember Charizard?

Speaking of Charizard considering how close the release of the movie is to the broadcast of "Charizard Chills", the movie was probably meant to take place after it, and even if it wasn't Charizard has listened to Ash before when he saw a strong pokémon and 2 Legendary pokémon probably constitute strong.

  3. Well worth the wait for me.

Maybe somebody asked this question before, but what happened to the beta tester representing the North? Did he get eaten by a polar bear? Trampled by a herd of Caribou? Impaled by a narwhal? An inquiring mind wants to know. ;)

  4. I thought the kids were two years older in the Japanese version. Apparently not.

  5. Also, from what I was able to dig up. I think Ash (Red?) and Misty (Kasumi) do end up together in the manga.

  6. Great review! I was wondering when you guys would do another one...

  7. The Gender aspect for most Pokémon wasn't introduced to games until after this movie was released world wide...

If Suede can go ballistic on Charizard obeying then that needs a comment too.

The review was ok but I agree with Jew Wario playing a girl is better because the Girls LOOK BETTER! Hey maybe he can come back that way again next time and Suede can admit to always having wanted to be Ash and any Female Pokémon trainer played by a guy is just messing with him in uncomfortable ways.

  8. Awesome video, God I haven't seen Pokemon 2000 since...... well right around 2000.

Hope the 3rd one comes sooner, I've been waiting since the first one for the continuation of this series.

  9. Oh my, that was the most fun I've had in a little while. This one was an absolute treat--you guys are awesome. I was laughing my ASS off the whole time.

  10. Personally I also prefer Tracey to Brock. Sometimes, watching Brock go gaga over every female he sees gets old to the point of embarrassing. Plus he's an artist out to draw every Pokémon, so he isn't a trainer and offers a different perspective.

I haven't all the movies since I'm not a huge fan of the franchise, but I rather enjoy this one and it's probably my favorite. There's a lot of action going on and my preference for Tracey may also factor in.

  11. You realize in the official manga Jesse and James are married with a baby girl living in some country side retired in Kanto.

  12. I was never into Pokemon as a kid (or ever), but I love this review just as much as if I had been. You guys work great together, the reference to "The Music Man" made my night and... well, I'd mock Suede's taste in pairings, but since I've got a few skeletons in my own fandom closet, I think I'd better not...

  13. Hmm... Luvhaug? I guess poor literacy is KeWl when concerning names too... XD

I really liked this movie when I was younger. I even recently purchased an Ancient Mew card from eBay, since they didn't release those in the UK, just the three Legendary Birds.

Wait... does that mean I'll have a whirlygig Fortress in the future? Sweet!

  14. I laughed really hard at this. 2000 was my favorite Pokémon movie until the release of the two Victini movies. I am an absolute Pokémon NUT, possibly even more into it now than I was as a kid. These movies are undeniably silly, but I enjoy them the same way I do the 1986 Transformers movie or the first two Ninja Turtles movies. Looking forward to Pokémon Black and White 2 next week, and the Keldeo/Kyurem movie with Vic Mignogna as Keldeo in December.

  15. "Pokémon don't automaticly listen to you if you catch them, remember Charizard?"

Charizard has an in-game reason for being that way. Ash got him from another trainer, meaning he counts as 'traded.' Though, when you think about it, Ash DID have all eight badges by this point, which was how that problem was fixed in the games...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. if memory serves, Ash got the Charmander from someone else. but Charmander was completely okay with him, so Charizard going nuts never made any sense. did he have the problem with Charmeleon, as well?

  16. The boat was my favourite character.

  17. Huh, Suede is a fan of Dj Pon-3

Boy, I remember the history of Pikablu rumor before Gold and Silver came out, boy does that make me feel old.

I could've sworn there was one instances in either the movies, like 1-3, or the TV show, before 3rd generation focused, where that black part of Jessie's shirt wasn't black, and actually showed some boob. I forgot until I was watching this and saw that part.

Personally I liked Tracy, sure Brock's constant love poison was fun in nearly every episode, spawning the ever so awesome Jenny oh jenny song, but as a replacement, I never missed Brock during the Orange island. Honestly, Tracy was, IMO, a good addition to the crew. Sure her was underused, but I didn't know how underused thanks to 4kids compared to the Japanese originals.

I completely forgot about how they revealed Oak and Ash's Mom's first names, but I'm pretty sure the professors' last names are still wood related, other then one professor apparently.

But yeah, I agree the movies, and show, pulls some really stupid reasons to make us believe Ash is apparently the messiah to all pokemon, where he's somehow tasked with quelling all incidents either prophesied or pulled out of their butt.

I hope Movie 3 comes sooner, since it's was my least favorite of the 3, since I stopped seeing the movies after that one.

  20. The Fire-Ice-Lighting Trio could have also referred to Entei, Suicune, and Raikou. Yes, Suicune is classified as a Water-type, but seeing how it learns Ice-type moves and how prolific Fire, Ice, and Lightning seem to be in pieces of Japanese fiction (Megaman Zero/ZX's Fire > Ice > Lightning > Fire triangle, Okami's God powers, Fire Emblem's Trinity of Magic, the Three Admirals in One Piece (even though Kizaru uses light-based powers since lightning was taken by Enel), etc.), I'd like to think that Suicune could have been classified as an Ice type as well.

For the bird trio, here's how it works: for the Japanese, Lightning > Fire > Ice > Lightning. Why? Well, lightning overpowers fire in terms of heat. It also creates fires. Fire melts ice (obviously), and ice diffracts light(ning). In the case of Zapdos, Articuno, and Moltres, the same rock-paper-scissors triangle applies since, as one commenter mentioned, Articuno does normal damage to Moltres, and though Zapdos is Super-Effective against both birds, it runs a risk when it fights Articuno with ice type moves that freeze Zapdos's wings.

    @Evan Forshage
Simple: it was a game mechanic. That said, Pikachu also didn't listen to Ash either when he first got him, and there were a few other times when Ash's most obedient Pokemon disobeyed him (remember that touching scene when they all came out of their Pokeballs to keep him warm?). However, in terms of battle, the trading argument seems to be the most reasonable one. I guess bonding, synchronization, and coming to terms with one another fulfills the role of badges.

So if they let Suede keep his katana, does that mean they'd let Linkara bring his magic gun along (I'd like to think that this review takes place while Holo-Linkara was still in Linkara's stead but before he "turned against everyone" so he doesn't have a magic gun on him, but if Linkara says otherwise, then I'll roll with his answer and just reply with "Plot Hole". Thank you To Boldly Flee for the answer to life, the universe, and everything!).

    Guys...guys...this is 4Kids you're dealing with...just be glad they're gone now...

Well, the 14th Movie has pseudo-trainers from ancient times. They weren't kept in Pokeballs, but they obeyed their "trainers" nonetheless.

Wait..."I have Krabbys"...how the $#!! did that make it past the 4Kids censors?!

A little late on the trigger there, ain't ya Slowking? Geez, and he's supposed to be the intelligent one of the Slowpoke family...

If there's one thing Japanese anime has shown us, it's that everything can take a huge beating, lose massive amounts of "blood", and still come out relatively unscathed. Case and point: the boat's keel. Sure it didn't bleed, but it should have been annihilated
    after all that skidding.

So mentioning gods and anything Christian related is a no-no for 4Kids...but naked ANGELS, which are of Semitic decent, and that "Krabby" joke are a-ok...4Kids: the greatest hypocrites in the world, only rivaled by Mewtwo.

While you can argue that some snakes can swim, you're more likely to see a Snorlax doing the Butterfly than an Ekans/Arbok swimming in the middle of the ocean due to the lack of Surf. And speaking of Surf, too bad Nidoqueen, Tauros, and Nidoking aren't capable of learning it. Nope! That's not what the game says AT ALL. That said, sucks to be Rhyhorn. It was probably two levels away from evolving. Then it could learn Surf.

Wait, why are Golbat, Magnemite, and Magnemton on the lookout? They can all fly/float (technically, Dodrio could too, but only for in-game purposes).

That pun could have been worse...drying pans could have been included.

Pretty entertaining review guys. Can't wait to see the next one up. That one, the fifth one, and the sixth one are my top three, though for all different reasons.

  21. Someone needs to tell jewwario hes wrong i just fact checked the team rocket thing and the show doesnt even back up that fan translation

  22. Hope these won't be only annual events, or else you guys'll NEVER finish them!

I was a little disappointed that you guys didn't review the UTTER MINDSCREW that was the short that ran before the feature, but maybe they didn't include it on the DVD. I could have easily seen it as ending up rather similar to the Nerd's first Pokemon the Movie Line of the Week. (Seriously, what DID they give the writers before they made those shorts?)

I was just hoping that J-Dub would have brought the Lara Croft defense when you guys ragged on him for playing as a girl... (for those not familiar, there's a persistent, though probably apocryphal, story that says that Lara Croft is a female character because, when shown an early test build of Tomb Raider, an Eidos executive directed that they make the main character a woman because "If I'm gonna look at an ass all day, it'd better be an ass I *enjoy* looking at.")

As a result, when I saw your post come up again, I thought it was just a duplicate (it happens often that blogger will send me a duplicate e-mail for approving a comment), so I deleted it when I saw it, sorry to say.

  24. Oh, if only our brave heroes knew about the fan-made Pokemon MMO that's in alpha right now. Granted, it's not very good at the moment but neither is having to watch ALL the Pokemon movies.

Happy to learn that we share the same favourite, though.

  25. Re-edit of an old misspelt comment:

Great review guys. The analysis was spot on and the banter between the reviewers was hilarious. Although I must say something.

Incoming rant on Ash Ketchum (Disclaimer: This rant is based on my hazy memory of a show I haven't seen in nearly a decade so feel free to correct me if I made mistake).

I completely agree with Linkara on Ash Ketchum. Why is he so special? Not just in this movie, but in the whole anime series? Ash is in my opinion one of the most incompetent Pokemon Trainers ever. Why?

    1. He constantly needs saving all the time (As Linkara pointed in this review).

    2. His Pokedex count is a joke. I've caught more Pokemon in the first game alone more than Ash has in his entire career and I don't even focus on catching them all, only the badass ones.

    3. Most of the time he never lets his Pokemon evolve (through Evolution stones) cuz not because it's early for him to use them but because he doesn't want them to change, meaning he forces his pokemon to never grow up. What kind of moral message is that? O_o

    4. He has never won ANY Pokemon League tournament ever.

    5. Whenever any of his Pokemon do evolve, become badass or do something awesome...he immediately abandons them. Butterfree, Kingler (I think), Primeape and Charizard (who is my favourite Pokemon BTW) after going through so much trouble finally tames the thing, especially since Charizard cost Ash the Indigo Plateau League. He even tries to abandon his God-Like Pikachu at one too.

Hey linkara, out of curiosity, what is your personal favorite Pokemon.

Also the review was awesome, even better than the first one in my opinion. :)

  27. Wooo! I was afraid this series would be forgotten. Glad to see it since I never saw any of the movies but the first.

  28. So will you guys keep doing this or will Seude continue it on his own, I hope it's the three of you b ecause you guys work really well together at this. I also loved how you made the character models more descriptice and emotive from the last time. On an unrelated note, something bugged me about your 200th eppisode ... no literal burning of OMD occurred- Ethank 14

  29. I honestly forgot how much I enjoyed Suede's reviews. And this was a great crossover to remind me of what I've been missing. I hope we see #3 soon, because 2000 was hilarious.

  30. Hey Lewis please respond back to this.

Please go easy on Molly Hale in the next movie.

Reply back and i'll explain more.

  31. Man I am so Jelly. I'd give a leg or an arm to be able to talk about the Pokemon movies with you guys, the jokes, the nostalgia, the cartoon-ness. Also the third one's my favorite too.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I enjoyed this review. I was never huge into Pokemon. I have a bunch of the cards but couldn't find anyone to play with. Had someone try and teach me once but that hadn't gone so well.

I do love the animation for Linkara's hat when he was sad, the hat 'drooping' with him.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh god.

I remember being 14 and enjoying it.

Now that I think of it I would still enjoy it now purely for nostalgia.

Oh to be young again. This was a joy to see it again from this angle and nearly every problem has been detailed here in the review.

BTW, ever heard of Chaos Chess by chance?

  34. Because Moltres and Zapdos are flying types, ice does normal damage to Moltres and electric does normal damage to Zapdos.

  35. 4Kids has been known for removing scenes for no damn reason in an anime they dubbed and changing lines just cause but O_O WOW JUST WOW 4KIDS....THANK GOD THEIR GONE! Why did they remove the scene of revealing Jesse and James(Musashi and Kojiro in Japan) are 15 years old when we all thought they were Adults? And I agree with one hundred percent with Linkara on the Moltres Articuno and Zapdos rant(Of the change from Gods to Titans), ESPECIALLY IN KINGDOM HEARTS DREAM DROP DISTANCE SHOWS QUASI'S WORLD AND KEEP THE LINES OF GOD IN IT and of course has gotten much DARKER as of late especialy with characters finally saying Death in the series thanks to Birth By Sleep(an excellent speech about Death said at one point by Master Xehanort in BBS I will admit)I mean....Wow 4Kids.....the editing and changes they did in this movie is a new low, even to their standards. Though who woulda thought Poke Balls are Monster Balls in Japan..

  36. I've been waiting for this ever since the first review was out, and I'm so glad you three are keeping it up! This is hilarious, I love you guys!

  37. Speaking of Pokemon fanfics, do you read any? I've never been too engrossed by it, but I have found one that I think you should check out as I've found it impossible to stop reading (all 300+ chapters of it.. ya it's a long read).

The summary he gives is better than anything I could come up with for it http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2987606/1/Tales-Of-Flame

  38. I have to wonder if 4Kids actually changed gods to titans.

In Japanese, there's a word kami, which applies to the majority of supernatural entities. The closest English translation is spirit, but is also includes grim reapers, gods, angels, some demons, forces of nature, and ancestor ghosts.

Anime fansubbers have a bad tendency to translate kami as god(s), even though this is usually inaccurate and Shinto priests, whose careers are based entirely around kami, have advised westerners not to call them gods because most of them aren't.

Based on this movie, if the original script just used kami, it looks like titan may actually have been a slightly more accurate translation, since the legendary birds act more like wild animals than deities.

That said, I find it a bit odd that you would compare the legendary birds to Greek gods and then object to calling them titans when the Titans were, in fact, Greek gods. See, the Greeks had three classes of gods:

*Protogenoi are the original gods, and are the embodiments of fundamental things like Earth (Gaia), Sky (Uranus), Air, and other things.

*Titans are the offspring of the Protogenoi; they include Chronos, Rhea, and various others. Chronos killed Uranus and exiles the Protogenoi to Tartarus.

*Olympians are the most familiar of the Greek gods, including Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, and friends. They were the offspring of the Titans; Zeus led a rebellion against Chronos, ousting his rule and restoring the Protogenoi, but establishing the Olympians as the rulers of the world.

  39. I really like your Pokemon reviews despite me knowing jack all about their world and such. I am particularly fond of the fact that the animation for your characters has become more expressive. It is just wonderful.

I also like how Suede acknowledged that the joke in about JewWario being a girl really backfired last time. Based on Suede's commentary, JewWario was playing a girl just because he was being a perv and wanted a pair of boobs of his own to fondle. How the hell were we supposed to surmise that??!!! It was just a badly written, badly executed and all-around bad joke.

I never get tired of you pointing out the ass-backward messages of these movies and how 4Kids screws around with them.

Couple of questions: Are you familiar with the Pokemon producer and voice actress Hilary Thomas? She is an acquaintance of mine. Also, what did you mean when you said, "So in trying to be politically correct, they created something nobody liked. Why does that sound familiar?"

P.S. 4kids, I collected films in widescreen VHS since I was eleven!! :-D

  40. Lol. That was a great video. Pokemon MMO eh. Sounds very intriguing.

  41. Tracey isn't all that bad. The worst pokemon companion is Max. He contributes nothing that another character or the pokedex couldn't already do, he has no pokemon of his own, and he spends all of his time on screen either fighting with May or expositing on how attacks work cause May wen into her journey knowing nothing. God have mercy and your souls Lewis and friends when you have to face the boring, aggravating, slow-moving, Max-centered train wreck that is... Jirachi: Wihsmaker.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hey, Lewis. I have a question for you.

Just like probably everyone else, I know that Justin has left TGWTG recently. What does this mean for the future of these reviews? Is he still gonna stick around for them, or is it gonna be just you and Suede from now on?

I'm really curious, since these two movie reviews have been a load of great fun. Or should I ask Suede instead, since he's the one putting these videos up?

Well, however it turns out, I'm certainly interested in hearing your thoughts on the next one, what with it being your favorite and all.
