Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan #1

 photo ST2-1-Thumbnail.jpg

Beyond the darkness, beyond the human evolution... is Khan. And a pointless adaptation of a great movie.

NOTE: Yes, I know I accidentally said the nephew's name is Pressman when it's Preston. My mistake.

Ahh the comics vs mice argument.
You know I would just love to have a long discussion with you about this. Probably involving beer, whiskey and debating V for Vendetta. Yes I went there.
I've never understood the point of direct conversion from film to comic or vic versa. There is just no point in it. We have one, why do we need the other? An adaptation on the other hand deliberately changes the story to fit the medium. Films are written for watching and comics for reading. I could go into movie theory and how it interacts with an audience opposed to comics (and, of course, novels).
Almost all tie in comics like this one are useless. you pointed out why at the end of your review, before threatening "Linkara Pi"
speaking of you really need to get your priority alert system sorted. A psychotic alternate dimension robot taking over a Star Destroyer class ship with a thirst for revenge. After all the stuff recently that should really be reclassified as SNAFU.

Good review and good shout out to SF Debris. He deserves it

Just finished watching this on blip.tv.

Hmm... why do I get the feeling that this story arc is going to end with Comicron-1 being destroyed in the same manner that the Enterprise was destroyed in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

Speaking of which, what do you think of Star Trek II: The Search for Spock?

We've heard your thoughts about Star Trek 1, 2, and Insurrection, but what are your thoughts on 3,4,5, Generations, Nemesis, and others I might have forgotten about (sorry, not that big a Star Trek fan).

Could you possibly make a big post about it

I got to agree with the person on blip that said it was stupid to worry about review and not ship. The movie is awesome but comic is okay. Sort of interesting that this review is happening as recently talk of Khan (even casting) will be appearing in the next Trek movie. I forget who was rumored to play him but I have no idea if it has been denied or if is true. Also there was even IDW comic with Khan story of his time on the plane.

To be fair, there ARE worse people to steal from than SFDebris. Like Rick Berman! Or the little devil on William Shatner's shoulder that told him he COULD flip off God on camera!

One aspect of TWOK that a lot of people ignore, but I actually love, is how much it just FITS the Original Series mythos. Most of the other movies in the Star Trek mythos were just made as movies disregarding the character arcs in-universe (I'm looking at you, Nemesis and Final Frontier.) TWOK not only featured Kirk's best opponent in the series, it also had his reappearance fit the story progression, patch up the major plot issues, AND addressed a lot of the concerns Kirk had in his run as captain. *prepares to be pissed off at the "no-win scenario" rebuttal later on, as there's no doubt that the comic will butcher it*

I personally like the "Chekhov was on the john" explanation, miself. XD

Truthfully, this was not your best review. Your main complaints did not stem from the comic itself, but rather how the movie was better. The biggest complaint you had about the comic was the the artwork was erratic. Maybe it's just me, but I would rather here about a bad comic than a good movie.

Nice review, although the cheery music in the credits felt a bit off putting compared to the tone at the end.

I'm pretty sure the reason why would anyone want to adapt a Star Trek movie into a comic book in 2009 was because of the J.J. Abrams movie released that same year. Goes to show we don't need unnecessary comic book adaptations like to promote a new entry of a franchise. We have our DVDs, thank you very much.

Speaking of which, I heard there was another 2009 Star Trek comic that attempted to bridge the gap between Star Trek: Nemesis and the reboot. Any good/bad things about it?

Well at least you didn’t yell, “Why didn’t you tell me?”

You do realise, you just said you’d be willing to blow up Comicron-1 in front of Nimue right? I know you installed ‘honesty and ethical guidelines’ so she wouldn’t take over Earth but her job is to run and protect Comicron-1 and you just threatened that. Maybe it’s just the fact that HAL 9000 terrified me as a child, as I do love Nimue, but that does seem like a stupid thing to say.

(Sorry if this posted more than ones. I just got two error messages.)

I'll disagree with you somewhat on the thing about comics not having acting--the difference there is that the acting is all on the artist who draws it. Look at, say, how much acting George Perez, Amanda Conner, or Nicola Scott put into their comics sometime--you can get just as much of an emotional read on the characters from their artwork as you could from live-action actors. That said, the performance level is NOT the same without the ability to have the delivery of the dialogue. (This is why, to me, a writer truly succeeds in writing a comic when I can "hear" the dialogue in my head as I read it. Perfect example would be Paul Dini's run on Detective Comics, where I "heard" all the character voices from BTAS delivering the lines.)

And Jarkes, I'm pretty sure that Comicron One will NOT be destroyed. Think more like the ending of Star Trek II...

By the way, I *love* the meta of getting to see who's operating your camera now, Lewis!

good review. I have to admit, like you, I have my own favorite sci-fi movie that goes beyond all other movies that I love, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. I understand your love for Wrath of Khan, I've seen it and it is great. Its one of my favorites of the Star Trek movies, right next to First Contact and The Undiscovered Country. By the way, I may not be the first to notice this, but, if you are attempting to do a parallel between you and Mechakara as opposed to Kirk and Khan (and possibly Picard and the Borg), then all I can say is: That would be a great shout out to the movies.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I'm in agreement with you about the movie needing a comic adaption. Lord, what a butchered mess...

As far as stories involving the Kobayashi Maru go, one of the Brave New Worlds short story collections has one where Nog takes the test...and proceeds to crash it by hailing the attackers and haggling over the cost of the Maru and the people aboard. That one happens to be my favorite.

I call foul on the Holodeck having exterior shots too.

I mean, who is looking at them? Is there a corner of the Holodeck running the "exterior shot" corner that we the audience can occasionally look at from our places on the other side of the 4th wall, or do the people actually taking part in the simulation suddenly find themselves standing in open space watching as a miniature cube blasts a miniature Voyager, and then find themselves back where they belong in the simulation once the little cut scene ends?

Statute Regulating for Commerce was probably his most read book, since it was the biggest. :D

Though I admit to not really being a Star Trek fan, I've seen "Wrath of Khan"...it's an alright movie but I guess I didn't' take away as much as a Trekkie...or someone way more knowledgable...would. Regardless, you made a lot of valid points on what the comic screwed up and it really does feel like this was just a rush job to say "we have every Star Trek movie as comic books" than anything really notable or important. Then again, the whole bit with muffled Khan was hilarious.

BTW: yeah people more know the band for "Invisible Touch" but as a semi-Genesis fan, they are a really fun, interesting band. Try to look into some of the Gabriel-era stuff such as "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" or "Selling England By the Pound" sometime...also recommend "Duke" from the Collins era. (need to hear a few more from them, I keep putting off on "Nursery Crime" and the "Genesis" albums...)

I LOVE TWOK (who doesn't, it's an awesome movie!) Seen it like hundreds of times. It's a shame that lots of important scenes were left out in the comic. It wouldn't have even been hard to implement them into the comic.

I'm thinking that we are going to see another epic fight to the death with Mechkara. There is something that I wonder though. With everyone on Comicron 1 trying to stop Mechakara, how will Linkara be able to review the next comic? I doubt he would teleport off the ship just to review the next comic while one of his most deadliest enemies is trying to get control of his ship that could destroy the entire planet.

I'll admit that I'm not a Star Trek Fan, that's cool with me. I'm not going to comment on the comic review. I can't agree with your opinion or disagree with it. I might see it as movie goer. As for the story line. All I think is OH Crap!.
Linkara, your priority might be in wrong place at the beginning of the review. However,I don't think that it would've made a lot of difference if you gotten to the ship earlier in the review. Mechara 2.0 does work and move quickly now he's a 'bot. As strange as it sounds I think Mechara is weak in body, but is more powerful in strength. I think Mechara is going for Divide et Impera/Divide and conquer. He wants Linkara to himself and without any aid in a battle. I smell a nice Linkara vs Mechara showdown in the future.

This isn't the only time that a movie adaptation comic came long after the actual movie...

The first Marvel and DC colaberative project was "The Wizard of Oz" in 1975, a full 36 years after the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie was released in theatres... Of course VCRS were expensive back then, so a comic adaptation was maybe a good way for people to enjoy the film in between annual airings on TV.

This comic makes me wonder if IDW is just incomptent at doing movie adaptations however... their adaptation of the GI Joe movie was so condensed it made no sense if you hadn't seen the film... with entire sequences cut down to two panels.

Also I love the new interior halway and closing door shots on the ship... Great stuff.

Now I'm wondering what books Linkara left for Vyce to read in his exile. Probably "Statue Regulating: The Comics Adaptation" by Gary Brodsky & Rob Liefeld.

Hm good review, I loved that movie though it been awhile since I seen it. Not a fan of watching movie twice.

Hm I thought since you and liz broke up her character would be put on a bus and never spoken of again. Hm it's nice that the break up went well enough that she still makes apperences in your videos.

Wow, that was interesting! I've never seen the movie all the way threw from beginning to end, but I've seen bits and pieces over the years!
I've owned and read some pretty crappy comic adapts of movies and they normally do suck! The art most the time just looks like they just traced over a still from the movie. Like I got a comic adapt of Batman & Robin that is actually a million times worse than the film itself! You you got a copy I'd love to see you, Linkara, review it with the Nostalgia Critic! :D
You know what I'd like to see an alternate and/or parody of this movie with what if the books Kahn had were more Pacifistic! Like instead of the Old Testament he had a book on Buddhism? Instead of just having Dante's Inferno he had the whole Divine Comedy? Instead of Moby Dick he had Rick Van Winkle!? You know what I mean?
Cool the Mechakara story is moving along at quite a quick pace! Rise of the Machines!?

So are you trapped on Comicron-1 and need to continue the review in the hull of the ship? Perhaps you can make your way to the holo-deck so you can get the "proper background" for the review. Just a suggestion to help you with your script (don't take that as rude)

Also, put Buffo in the lime light for a little bit. I want to learn more about his character

As just a regular Sci-Fi movie and TV show watching I can give them an excuse for why they could have exterior shots of the ship. It could be an image on a monitor inside the ship for the captain to see. I don't know if that's something that happened in Star Trek, but I've seen it in a lot of space travel and battle themed animes and movies. One I recalled even showed the ship releasing mini-flying cameras so the ship could have a full 360 view of everything going on around the ship!

A couple of notes regarding Astronomy to clear up some of the plot holes in the Wrath of Khan: (yes, I'm also a science nerd)

1) While it seems unlikely today with telescopes, you can pretty easily tell the difference between, and identify individual planets with the naked eye. The Ancient Greeks and Romans certainly knew that Mars, Venus and Jupiter were not stars - it's why those planets are named after said deities (more recently discovered planets, like Saturn, Uranus, etc were extensions of those names). Given standard naming, the planet that exploded would've been right next to Khan's. An event THAT close certainly would've been noticed with the naked eye- it'd be like if Mars exploded.

2) There are a LOT of planets in space. Even with our primitive technology, we've discovered so many extrasolar (that is, planets that aren't part of our local solar system) that we abandoned naming them and instead numbered them. Starfleet surely has knowledge of TRILLIONS of planets. One exploding and slipping by unnoticed is definately not an impossibility. It goes even moreso for a relatively unimportant system, since the distance between stars is so incredible.

3) Any beacons or the like left in orbit would've been obliterated with the destruction of the neighboring planet. The amount of energy released from ANY planet exploding would easily destroy the Enterprise, much less any smaller satellites left in orbit. Even if they DID survive, the sudden shift would've knocked them all out of orbit with ease. As such, even if the enterprise did leave a warning, it sure as heck wouldn't still be there when the Reliant got there.

4) We don't know what the neighboring planet was like. A terresterial (rocky planet) exploding seems unlikely, but a Gas Giant? It seems somewhat likely given the right makeup - an extrasolar (originated in another system) capture made mostly of Hydrogen getting hit by a stray malfucntioning probe or the like could theoretically ignite it, though this is somewhat of a stretch, even to me.

PS: I'm not trying to nitpick you here (insert Douchy McNitpick joke here) I love science, and happily weigh in on such issues.

Jarkes said...

So... TWOK is the best Star Trek movie in your opinion... What's the second best? And besides Final Frontier, which movie is the worst?

First Contact is a close second for second-best, IMHO. Worst is Insurrection, in my humble opinion. Final Frontier is bad, but there's a cheesiness to it that makes it a guilty pleasure for me.

To nit-pick on the Lieutenant thing - from what I recall, cadets going through Officer Training in the Napoleonic era were given the rank of Lieutenant 3rd Class.

Why is this applicable to Starfleet - because Nicholas Meyer (and Gene Roddenberry - his other description of Star Trek, aside from "Wagon Train to the Stars" was "Horatio Hornblower in Space") was a fan of the Horatio Hornblower novels, where this comes up. (Hornblower starts as a Midshipman, and then while in Officer training, he gets the rank of 3rd Lieutenant).

The "exploding console" style of Starship combat in this, and in the original series with episodes like The Balance of Terror was also meant to be a nod to how ship combat was depicted in the Hornblower novels, with rigging getting shot off the masts and so on.

on your question on how Khan knows about ceti alpha 6 exploding it is explaned in the Eu book "to reign in hell" by Greg cox which deal with Khans time on ceti alpha 5.

In it Khan witnesses the explosion at night when he was looking up at the night sky as the explosion was so big it made the sky as bright as day and then the shock waves started to hit the planet. so it was quite obvious for Khan figure out that a planet exploded.

Its only if youve seen the film like a thousand times and can repeat the dialog in the same mannor as the actor but even, like in this for example, they cut a load. Im looking forward to how this pans out and how the KHAAAAN! splash page will look.

Lewis Lovhaug said...

"2) Those cuts to Pollo during the end when you were making your speech seemed a little... odd. Maybe something, maybe nothing, oh well"

I can tell you why right now.

The paint used for Pollo's blue color scheme is very felective, so he doesn't screen very well in front of a green screen. I tried a few different lightning techniques, but nothing seems to work. As such, I cut out a still image of him for those shots, since I needed to cut away to him to both establish that he was there as well as just have something to cut to for a few shots. I forgot his rotational axis is supposed to be lower, because that's where the puppeteer should be operating him, so he looks off because his movement is unnatural.

I'm thinking of constructing a quick 3-D model of him to use in the rest of this storyline to avoid these green screen headaches, but we'll see if I have time.

ShadowWing Tronix said...

I reviewed this when it came out, and it's where I decided I just don't like the painted art style for a comic because of scenes where the characters are supposed to emote or do something action-y.

Admittedly, it does have some faults; it needed more than three issues and I said as much at the time. It was the only Star Trek film left to be adapted as a comic because nobody had the license at the time. (I believe that's the reason.) I think it could have been a lot worse that it was, but I still recommend the movie over most comic adaptations. Novel adaptations are more hit and miss.

So this is like the Watchmen movie, only in reverse?

John C. Kirk said...

As a general point about the purpose of adaptations, I think they made more sense 20 years ago. In those days, I didn't have my own VCR, and buying a novel was cheaper than buying a VHS tape, so the adaptation was the most effective way to actually repeat the film "on demand".

@Orion_II

Okay, i can let that passing by unnoticed:

Star Fleet's cartography screwed the Genesis Project and create a plot hole the size of a mildly average black hole on that movie :

A) How a Starship crew could didn't have notice the changes in the Star System ?

B) If was the case of a Gas Giant exploding then the whole planetary system was screwed, depending on the position of the object like related to Neptune you have a wave of impact moving almost everything closer to the star even in a slow rate, and if like Jupiter the other Gas Giants will be pulled away in increasing larger orbits while the interior planets move faster in rapidly shrinking orbits according to their respective positions when the cataclysmic impact wave hits the planet. And that means systemic entropy that can't be ignored by any starship.

C) In case of the explosion of a rocky planet like Earth, how do you explode a planet without a Death Star Station, a Galactus Entity or Lewis Lovhaug's Ozzy Osborne impersonation performing an high pitch note ? If you have something like 6 planets and one of then explode for some reason destroying it self and spliting one of the near by celestial bodies in two how much big the explosion must be to :

A) Affect Alpha Ceti V orbit pushing it closer to the Star and made it a desert planet;

B) If was the case of pulling the planet away from the Star how big enough was the strenght of the explosion to affect other near by celestial bodies in case one of them split in two leaving six bodies in orbit of Alpha Ceti ? Because cartography still find six planets in orbit of Alpha Ceti, how do you explain that - not Orion II of course,i am asking how Star Fleet explain that ?

And yet how do you explode a planet by natural causes that doesn't involve singing and one exposed tanned latino muscular chest ?

Dear Orion II, the explosion of a Gas Giant is too over the top for the necessary effects occur at the necessary rate to not kill everybody instantly and a high pitched note can't move in the vacuum so we can consider Lewis innocent in this case.

Star Fleet Sucks !

Putting all of the storyline videos together would be several days worth of footage. Unless you meant just the storyline material, but as Linkara has said, the review material is just as important, and usually ties into the storyline material. So, he probably won't do that. He MIGHT make another blog post with all of the storyline-relevant videos thus far, like he did near the end of the Vyce arc... updated to include all of the Entity episodes, as well as these episodes.

Jarkes said...

By the way, Linkara, would you consider the current arc a "breather arc," since it's a short arc coming right after the Entity arc? Or is it going to be a bit too serious for it to be a real breather?

Unfortunately, it's not going to be much of a breather arc since I think January is the only time nothing will actually be happening storyline-wise.

However, with the constant stream of storyline stuff from October through February, we'll probably take a month or two off after that to take a break from storylines and give everyone a chance to relax after everything that happens.

...Seriously? A Galactica 1980 adaptation? O.o

...WHY?

Ozaline said...

Okay I just rewatched Wrath of Khan on netflix, and yeah I can see why it's top Trek for most people... I used to be a bit put off by it cause my brother was obsessed with that movie.

Still I don't know that it's a perfect film, I have two very small quibbles with it...

I don't think the fact that Savik wore her hair down and wore a tunic with a very low neckline contributed anything... well maybe, I think the intention may have been that she was attracted to Kirk and Kirk's subsquent line to McCoy about not noticing her hair... showed us he felt too old to be seducing alien babes.

But if this was their intention I think they might have been a bit too subtle about showing Savik's interest (then again for a Vulcan she was postivly dripping sex signals).

But more to the point... since Star Trek III was clearly set up with the life from death bit and the "remember" scene (though I understand this was added into the film near the end of production when they learned that they were going to be able to make another film)... It seems odd that in Star Trek III Kirk would have been ignorant of Vulcan funeral rights (bringing the body to mount Seleia(sp?)) Why didn't Savik say anything? Though maybe you'll address that in part three of your review.

Other than that... pretty much a perfect film.

@Rowdy C, no Galactica 1980 wasn't by IDW... IDW has produced some top notch books...

The Galactica 1980 comic was by Dynamite (here's the cover for issue 2) http://cdn3.iofferphoto.com/img/item/205/518/326/galactica-1980-comics-on-dvd-d5081.jpg

Dynamite has produced a lot of bad slocky, and down right mysognistic and racist comics...

Their work includes Athena and a comic about Connor McCleod on a quest to find Rameriz sword... which seems totally unnecessary.

1980 is probably a step above some of there other work.

The Comic: Uuuuuuugh... Like you, I'm a major Trek fan. This one hurt, particularly since the people who made this one, and the next 2 issues, have easy access to the movie. They just need to get their hands on a copy of the DVD and go from there. That said, I do agree that the artwork was nice... in some parts.

Your Arc: ... Ignoring an intruder alert on a ship capable of destroying a planet isn't a good idea when the intruder might... I don't know... find the 'fire' button very quickly...

Fiery Little One.

In fairness, Dynamite has done good work work on properties like Army of Darkness, and were inventive enough to get Kevin Smith to adapt his unfilmed Bionic Man and Green Hornet scripts, and I think it says something that Steve Bissette and Rick Veitch wanted them Dynamite to publish Alan Moore and their Silver Age Marvel tribute series "1963" (which could be arguably be the first truly great series to be put by Image and a series that I highly recommend Linkara and everyone reading this blog to go and out check out if they haven't done so already).

Fun review, though the 'well the movie...' bits did get a little grating. The comedy and laughs when they were there were quite good though. Maybe you shouldn't have selected the book though if you couldn't stop yourself even when you recognized it might be problematic.

As to the plot...Interesting. I really didn't expect the return of Mecha-cara I thought instead we were going to deal with your increasing power and magical armory. Maybe you would grow to think you were 'protecting' the world and began subtle machinations or at the least a foundation to be able to take it over. Your deal with Link-sano really does seem along this line. Would be quite interesting if you became the biggest threat to Earth thanks to your very existence and massive amounts of overpowered magical and scientific weaponry...

Something totally unrelated: With all the cosplay you've been doing I can't help but think it'd be funny to see you do a comic review of something very feminine manga or comic and dress up as one of the female characters therein. You really haven't done a 'GIRRLLL POWER' sort of comic, so could be funny. I mean just think what the slash-fic writers could do with that material! You'd jump to the front of the charts!

quoting : "Poor Linkara =( He never gets to use his cool things before an evil robot takes them over".

He don't have the budget for it.

quoting : "Ignoring an intruder alert on a ship capable of destroying a planet isn't a good idea when the intruder might... I don't know... find the 'fire' button very quickly"

Our Hero ladies and gentlemen, a sample of Starfleet finest, only Khan could be more obsessed than him with the task ahead to ignore the obvious danger.

Quoting the first line from the Battle in the Mutara Nebula :

[hailing Khan] "This is Admiral Kirk. We tried it once your way, Khan, are you ready for a rematch? Khan...? I'm laughing at the "superior intellect."

And as everybody knows, there he goes, boldly foll, facing off his certain doom.

And quoting Khan about the planetary explosion matter :

Khan: [shouts] THIS IS CETI ALPHA FIVE! Ceti Alpha Six exploded six months after we were left here. The shock shifted the orbit of this planet and everything was laid waste.

Okay, so in this case Starfleet cartography can argue that at the moment of the U.S.S. Reliant's arrival Alpha Ceti V was in the planetary path were Alpha Ceti VI was supposed to be and since Alpha Ceti V was supposed to be a M-Class planet the wasteland they find at the surface could not be the same planet because the Reliant's crewmen never bother to check the the cartographic and astronomic data banks to see if the stellar system match what they saw.

Therefore we can conclude and point the fact the Starfleet Academy gradutes are stupid in the 23rd Century and that was the true fact behind why Captain Kirk and the Enterprise original crew were IRREPLECEABLE.

Further evidences of stupidity after that Era are : Captain Picard and the Federation/Cardassian Treaties, Captain Janeway promotion to Admiral after commit several crimes against humanity and all sentient beings in general, Promote a Schizophrenic Hobo as Captain of the allegedly first starship called Enterprise in the 22nd Century and back Atop the Fourth Wall keep a compulsive comic book reader obsessed with bad comics who supposedly burn a few in charge of what can only be considered as a weapon of mass destruction in orbit of the planet Earth and that never goes anywhere else or even can landing on the planet.

Jesus, the man not even have a crew: just a robot, an artificial intelligence and a willing capable photogenic girlfriend who is never allowed to do anything else than be the proverbial helpless damsel in distress, again "OUR HERO LADIES AND GENTLEMAN, gentleman-feminist extraordinaire".

Well at least in his defense Linkara is a 23rd Century graduate so could be worst...hey wait a minute, it is worst.

Here, the Q-Continuum is prosecuting you Mr. Lewis Lovhaug a.k.a. Linkara for indulcing a mentally unbalanced universal supreme entity into suicide and so be responsible for it's murder.

Please if you survive the impending peril please proceed into the Celestial Temple of the Bajoran Prophets and face the charges against you, the prosecution already contact Captain Benjamin "Don't F@#k With" The Sisko to be your defense attorney but in case he can't be available for any reason the Q-Continuum will be more than happy to provide "Any" sentient being available to defend you, and we really mean "ANY".

Oh yes, about the planetary shifting : how do you scourge the planet and shift it's orbit without killing everybody in it in a matter of years instead of days ?

The accusation/defense/whatever rests.

I'm actually pretty sure the Kobiyashi Maru test takes place outside the ROMULAN Neutral Zone.

Since it's the Neutral Zone between the Federation and the Romulans, neither side can be there. But nothing is stopping the Klingons, who may be helping the Romulans, or just being punks just because they can.

That said, I think the reason this was adapated is because it never had an adaption before. As you said, Star Trek #1 took place just after Wrath, but came out 4 months before Search for Spock. THAT said, I completely agree as to its non necessity. I hope it becomes a pattern to review the rest of the adaptations. They can be goofy at times.

I had a look on wiki for more information about the no win scenario and I found an interesting one you didn't mention and wanted to share it with your other viewers.

In the Star Trek Novel Sarek in which Romulans replace the traditional Klingons Kirk's nephew challenges the leader of the ships to a fight to the death because the actual battle is put on hold until the ritual is resolved, while going to the teleporter he instructs the crew members to beam up the survivors and immediately escape (the only downside is that he is left to his death).

The reason I wanted to mention it and think it is the best of the "wins" is that it doesn't require any tweaking of the software to win , it relies on what would happen in a real situation instead of relying on the fact that it is a simulation so some details may differ and it succeeds in saving both the ship and the survivors from the planet below.

I know that the "outide" shots of the simulator irked you Linkara, but to me they seem reasonably justified.

Whilst it isn't explicitly stated, to my imagination if the bridge simmulator is only ever used for the K-M test it's a large waste of resources for the Starfleet Accademy. To me it would seem more likely that cadets are trained using the simulator as part of their studies. In that case the K-M test could be "sprung" on cadets whilst they were still familliar with the simmulator setup.

Based on my assumption that the simulator is a normal part of cadet training it becomes a pretty easy leap to imagine that the footage of a cadets decisions could be reviewed by their instructors and the cadets themselves to help them analyse their own process of command decision making. Such analysis could be done later using a 3D rendering of the time in the simmultor.

To me the "outside" shots from the simmulator sequence are acceptable as they represent such a proposed 3D rendering. The graphics would look realistic as we have already established from the holodeck that 3d rendering is highy advanced. I know that my scenario isn't stated to be true either and I'm just speculating, but it doesn't get my goat as much as it got yours.

Oh dear God. Destroy the ship? Considering that the AI you made was given the sole purpose of protecting it, that may not go over very well with her. Hmm, that could be an interesting twist toward the end, either her joining mecha-kara as the logical way to protect the ship, or simply trying to get both you AND him out. Whatever the case, this should be interesting.

"I'm actually pretty sure the Kobiyashi Maru test takes place outside the ROMULAN Neutral Zone."

No it has traditionally been outside the Klingon neutral zone.

However I do remember reading somewhere that once the Klingon Empire joined the federation the enemy ships and neutral zone was changed because Klingon enemies were no longer thought to be appropriate and although I don't recall exactly I think Romulans were used as replacement enemies.

Can you Annoyingnimous people and teasers a like stop suggesting the ship will explode at the end of the story arc ?

I already played in the realms of SPOILER ALERT territory and i assure you all is a lot more fun waiting to see the Enterprise explode in the theater watching the movie than watching in the trailer.

Now back to "Let's Explode A Planet Week" :

In the Tv series Space 1999 Humanity had been storing its nuclear waste in vast disposal sites on the far side of the Moon.

Due to an unknown form of magnetic radiation???, the accumulated waste reaches critical mass (really ???) and, on 13 September 1999 (how convenient) , detonates in a massive thermonuclear explosion.

The force of the blast propels the Moon like an enormous booster rocket, hurling it out of Earth orbit and into deep space at colossal speed (add face palm here), thus stranding the 311 personnel stationed on the Alpha Moonbase.

The runaway Moon, in effect, becomes the 'spacecraft' (with artificial gravity included) on which the protagonists travel(somehow), searching for a new home(roll eyes).

During their interstellar journey, the Alphans encounter a vast array of alien civilizations, dystopian societies, and mind-bending phenomena previously unseen by humanity (like the ratings for Lost first seasons and Michael Bay's profits at the box office).

Thanks wikipedia.

So in fiction radioactive waste explode spontaneously thanks to the weirdness of science fiction drama, not thanks to science fact.Okay.

How do we blow up Alpha Ceti VI ? Made the core more radioactive than the gravity able to contain (okay this maybe sounds stupid but let's keep going this way) it's strenght and Boom, enough energy to blow a Krypton in theory, probably not enough to actually evaporate the planet like a dead Death Star but enough to propel the crust and portions of the mantle into the space creating a field of debris and a impact wave strong enough to pull Alpha Ceti V out of its orbit and scourge the atmosphere but not destructive enough to kill all life on the planet immediately, acting more like a side effect of the main event than anything related to the main event it self.

Still doesn't explain why nobody in the Starfleet cares to send a exploration team to keep an eyes on the Civilization of Augments in development.

Did they have any budget cuts in the 80's ? Should we blame the Star Wars Project for the lack of care with the Genesis Project ?

Not really, as my friends in the Irish Ninja Community explained to me the real problem with the Starfleet at the time was the lack of budget destined for the Air Supply Project.

Check this: Air Supply - Making Love Out of Nothing At All

P.S.: At the end of 24th Century making something out of nothing at all was the main motto for the development of the self-replicant mine field project and as well the infinite triple quantum torpedos cache. But at the beginning of the Dominion War the Air Supply Project did already started to sound like this :

Air Supply- Teach Me To Run

End Credits.

In re. to Mountain King

Adaptations on their own are not necessarily bad. There have been many good adaptations of books to movies and vice versa like the Hogfather or James Bond (a case where the movies are actually far less racist and sexist), not to mention good adaptations of comic books to film like The Dark Knight. Admittedly The Dark Knight isn't based off of one comic but the point stands.
The problem is when the people making the adaptation either don't bother with making it good because they are relying on a fanbase to automatically buy it and when they simply don't understand what it was that made the original work so successful.

A question for Linkara. Since Mountain King mentioned V for Vendetta do you have an opinion on the film? I ask because I found myself surprised to learn that people around me praised it. Am I out of step with the viewers on this?

Capt. Sake "Hancock" Mangusto said...

@Gyre

Not that really matters or anybody cares about my opinion and i have no idea about Lewis opinion in or out of character but anyway in my own opinion V for Vendetta's movie is a big piece of crap and as general rule the book is always superior to the movie.

The only exceptions to this rule so far are :

- Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick in comparison with his cinematic adaptation Blade Runner by Ridley Scott;

The book is crap and the movie is Awesome, Ridley Scott made gold from a turd and that's amazing.

and

- The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien in comparison with the The Hobbit by Peter Jackson;

Trust me, the movie was not released yet and still the Hobbit stands among a few books in my top 5 list for worst book i read in my whole life so far, the movie can't be worst than this.

And don't worry, the Wachowski brother's audience are so out of touch as the same audiences paying to see the Michael Bay's movies.

Not so fast boys, please check the Kobayashi Maru's scene again, those are D-7 Class Battle Cruiser and despite this model be available in both Klingon and Romulan fleets, at the time period of this story the Romulan Empire were in decline and reclusive inside their own borders while the Klingon Empire was a lot more active and aggressive until the events of Star Trek The Undiscovered Country.

If that isn't enough at the same scene the ship's computer vocally informs about three "KLINGON" cruisers are closing fast:

quote from the original script

COMPUTER VOICE "Alert. Sensors indicate three Klingon Cruisers, bearing 316, mark 4, closing fast".

And if this is not enough evidence :

SAAVIK "Inform the Klingons we are on a rescue mission"...

UHURA "They're jamming all frequencies, Captain"

COMPUTER VOICE "Klingons on attack course and closing".

And about why the Klingon would be there, a few words from Admiral Ackbar :

"It's a trap!" ― Admiral Ackbar

P.S.: Why did the Starfleet Admirals agree with the formation of a Neutral Zone where the enemy can keep heavily armed and protect "FROM THE INSIDE" but we can't even step one finger nail in it without be nuked with photonic torpedos a thousand times until the next sunday morning ? Serious guys are you really that stupid ?

Personally: The early part of V for Vendetta is likely Moore's slowest, most padded, most over written pre DC work. The early part is also where almost all of his political commentary lies. (Outside of the first third, I think the Valerie short story is the last of his political commentary.) Personally, the only part I really have grief over is the colour change on V's roses. Other than that, I think they're both really good for the respective mediums.

So, you say "Calhoun" as I would say it "Cal-houn" and not "Calluuun", which I have heard, too. And I like Calluuuuuuun, he is a badass captain, and has the most funniest crew in the galaxy. Okay, he is written by one of the best writers - Peter David. And although I read on Wikipedia, that that other character of his, that he had written, some Quentin Stone, would be based on Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon, I think, that Calluuuuun is the only Riggs in Starfleet. ^^

By the way: The first time, I saw the movie, I saw it in german, and I was a bit confused, when Saavik made the "Captains Log" entry and said that she was Captain Spock. No, I am not kidding.

CaptainCalvinCat said...

By the way - just two cents to two topics:
First: Dubbing:

I said in one post earlier, that Saavik was saying - in the dubbed, german version - that she was Captain Spock. That is of course bullcrap and one could argue, that some dubs are falsify the intention of the original text. That is true - there are some dubs, that do that, and in germany we have the discussion, if there should be dubs, or if we should do it like norway (or finland), that doesn`t dub the english movies, but puts subtitles on them.

Just a question: What would you say, because I think, that dubbing has benefits, because therefore a movie can be understood by a broader audience.

the other thing, I'd like to discuss, is not comics made from movies, like here, with star trek II (although I read a horrible star wars - a new hope comic, once. *shudders*) but movies made from comics.

There are people, who are saying, that the movie "league of extraordinary gentlemen" is shit. I have to say, that I read the comic much later and say: it is a good one, but the movie was not that bad at all.

No really, I liked the movie.

Comic adaptations of movies can be as painful as novel adaptations: I have to admit, I liked the enterprise-pilot "Broken Bow". And when I read, that there would be a book, I bought it and ... was immideately disappointed. It was just... ugh. Bad grammar, bad layout... *shudders*

The novellization of "Wrath of Khan", was actually really good, there were some additional scenes in it, although I had to laugh really hard, as I read one Typo.
They wrote "Krig" - not only, that they didn`t get the order of the letters right, for writing "Kirk", they put a G, where has to be a K.

I guess, the proofreader was not available. But I laughed really hard. And there is the point, that in the book the Kobayash-Mari-Scenario was written as it would have happened, not as "scenario", but as a real life-and-death situation. Knowing, that it was just a scenario, I thought "Gee, Saavik, you are taking that whole situation waaay to seriously." ^^

By the way, you seem to have read the "Kobayashi Maru"-book, where Kirk, Chekov, Bones (we call him "Pille", which is the german word for "pill"), Sulu and Chekov are in a shuttle talking about how they dealt with the Kobayashi Maru Scenario... My favourite story in that anthology is the "Chekov-Story", the scenario on the moon-base. What about you?

Adaptations don't always mean they are redudand or useless. There actually was a novelization of Wrath Of Khan, which instead of leaving out scenes, added them. He was apparently escorting Khan when they dropped him on the planet, before he got assigned for the main crew, explaining the off scene stuff. Of course it was a mistake originally but they corrected it in the novel.

A couple of notes, Captain Sake Mangusto

A) Maybe they weren't looking? They were sent to survey a specific planet in an already explored system. Why would they survey the entire solar system when they just want to look at one planet?

B) That's why I said extrasolar capture. Gas giants existing within the "life zone" of a system are rare, but it can happen. An explosion originating from there could easily knock

C) You're assuming the planet was destroyed utterly, like Alderaan. I'm not - I'm presuming at most a large chuck broke off, and the rest simply fell apart. The first part actually happened here - it formed the moon. (Also note, that it takes FAR less energy to break a planet apart than to utterly destroy it. BOTH would be classified as "THE PLANET EXPLODED!" by anyone nearby)

CA) Who says the planet's ecosystem had stabilized? Immediately after a mass extinction event, as would've happened in this case, the surfice of a normally life sustaining planet looks pretty barren. Such things have happened in our own case.

CB) Again, they probably weren't looking. Why would they re-explore a known system? Planets exploding aren't exactly a common phenomenon.

It's unlikely, but not impossible. Do also remember that during the initial impact event, they could've taken shelter inside their ship. Assuming the point of impact was on the far side of the planet, there could well indeed be survivors.

Unlikely yes, but impossible, no. Do also remember how weird the universe as a whole is - such as the recenetly discovered "diamond planet"

CaptainCalvinCat said...

You are right, LeoTCK , the novelization of TWOK was actually really good, besides some minor errors in spelling (like I said: Krig instead of Kirk)- but they have the Lewis Carroll Thingi about Boojums and Snarks (if I remember correctly, those were the names of those creaturs) from - I suppose - Alice in Wonderland, they have actually quite a few very good additional scenes (e.g. the relationship between Saavik and young Peter Preston) so... if they had used that book as groundwork for the comic to base on, I bet, it would have been very good.

As a good sci-fi fan I've tried hard to like Wrath of Khan but I still can't get in to it. I appreciate it's more nuanced than many movies of its era and genre but I find its attempts at literary allusions are shallow, saying little that isn't fairly obvious. More, the movie is just extremely plodding and the sets tend to be very oppressive, dark and confining. Now, granted, to anyone who followed through from the other movies this might be an unsettling, atmospheric tonal shift but on its own rights it's quite an ugly, closed off movie with all the grandeur of Skaro circa Genesis of the Daleks. (I love GoTD, it's a different show on a much smaller budget though.)

As far as the review goes I can appreciate the attempt to show the shortcomings of directly transplanting a film to a comic but... that's really all this seemed to be about and perhaps that's what it should have been. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking it'd be genuinely interesting to see you compare comics to other mediums, (books, movies, tv shows) and see how the mediums differ, how conversions either way have triumphed and failed.

@Orion_II

A) Just because you find a planet in orbit of a Star at position "A" that doesn't mean it's the same planet you find before at the same said position "A", things may happen and messed up with the system even if any change may be very unlikely to happen like for some reason a planet exploding and another taking his orbit for some period of time because of the event.

B) An Extra Planetary Gas Giant captured by a Star and taking place in orbit inside the life zone ? I suggest you take a look at Neptune, is the smallest Gas Giant we have and is huge. Get a tractor beam and pull that Hack closer to our Sun life zone and you are gonna kill us all without any need for an explosion, there is no space for a big fat ball of hydrogen any where closer to our Sun.

C) The formation of the moon was the result of a colision and what happened on Ceti Alpha VI was a explosion visible and viewed by witnesses and the result was a shock wave able to scourge part of the atmosphere and somehow changing the orbital alignment of the planet moving it slowly away from the life zone, a few more years or maybe months an all life would be dead by the time of Reliant's arrival.

CA)Ceti Alpha V was dying, not stabilizing, we never had this kind of event on Earth yet and it's very unlikely that may happened the way it did on the movie.

CB)You arrive an old already knew star system, if you stop to check your map and you will discover a few things are wrong and your map doesn't match the system you are then you need to investigate before anything else : did the pilot screwed things at the helm and didn't follow navigational instructions ? No ? So some unknown phenomenon must have happened here, we are in the right place, why the system doesn't match ?

CC) There was no comet or asteroid impact at the opposite side of the planet, the event was a planetary explosion and was a visible event.

CD) Sorry but say the universe is weird is not exactly a scientific explanation for the event on the Ceti Alpha System, it's like saying Linkara Websode series is the way it is because Lewis is weird, and no, that's not an inteligent, reasonable or even closer from a scientific expanation. Linkara's Show is the ways it is because the limitation Lewis have to deal with on a daily basis in real life, say something is weird is not an real explanation.

It could force her to be a more competent Captain, than the actual Captain. Not that unfamiliar. Saw it on a german star trek parody called “highlander”, where the complete crew was more competent, than the Captain would be, saw it on “Galaxy Quest”, wrote it in my Fanfic, where the Captain “Cal” is an idiot, and the rest of the crew is extremely capable, but doesn`t point that out to Starfleet, because, if they would actually send someone, who IS competent, they would not have that kind of leeway, they have now.

I wouldn’t call Cals XO Agatha a damsel in distress, wouldn’t call commander bradbury of the highlander a damsel in distress and I wouldn’t call Gwen de Marco (from Galaxy Quest) a damsel in distress.

Well I guess, that is something, that you can talk about with the creative staff of AT4W, i.e. Linkara.

However, for some reasons I honestly doubt, that there can be
a complete crew-compliment abord Comicron 1. And I tell you, why that would be, IMHO. First reason would be: Money.
It is pure business economics and political economy: You have a certain amount of money, and have to gain the biggest possible outcome with it. I know nothing about Linkaras financial situation, but he has said, that he gets paid for the videos by blip. So - I doubt you can get rich with that kind of job, I think it would suffice to make a living, but - you cannot get rich.

And with the money, that he actually has, he has to make a living, to buy food, clothing, etc. and to buy comics. There is technical maintenance to Computer, Video-Camera etc. and I honestly doubt, that he has enough money left, to hire a few more actors for the comicron 1 bits. Even if he had, pure based on business studies and econimical thoughts, it would be not the smartest thing to do, to hire, just for a few bits, a few seconds, a couple of other actors.

However you can argue, that he could ask his neighbours, friends, if they could help him, but I think, not everyone would be saying "You want me to play a part in your internet-video-reviewing of crappy comics, where I am going around on a blue screen and am in post production copied on a starship I have never seen? I have to remember lines, which could be more technobabble-laden than Star Trek Voyager, and I don`t get paid for it, it is just for fun? Sure, count me in."

That is the spirit, that only a few have, because - lets be honest - the majority wants to gain something for their actions.

The second reason I don`t see that happen, is the point of "too many cooks...", because if Linkara says, that the can be on his show, I think, if they don`t get paid, they DO want another sort of compensation, and that might - I say: Might - be, that they want to be creatively involved. I could understand that, because - like I said - the majority of the AT4W-episode is revieweing crappy comics, and the minority is the actual storyline.

quoting : "I wouldn’t call Cals XO Agatha a damsel in distress, wouldn’t call commander bradbury of the highlander a damsel in distress and I wouldn’t call Gwen de Marco (from Galaxy Quest) a damsel in distress".

And please you and everybody else prevent yourselves from be so easily offended by the damsel in distress concept together with several other concepts of the so called "female exploitation", without females all adventures and peril scenes would be about a bunch of gay guys saving each other and it's nothing wrong with that but the girls can play that part too, i just wonder why they must be so up tight when the roles are reversed and the hero became a gentleman in distress.

And despite the fact i am a James Bond fan and had in the past a man crush about Pierce Brosnan until i tragically discover he has thin legs (Why God ? Why?) in my fan fics just like James in the movies i always save the girls in the end doesn't matter how much exploited they are at the end, i don't care what the feminists have to say about this. You are a bunch of 19th Century prudes with no place in modern society.

Excuse me, but did you just attempt to use the word "gay" as a derogatory general insult word?

Because I don't tolerate that kind of crap on my blog.

Capt. Sake "Hancock" Mangusto said...

I will not insult your intelligence Lewis and we both knew you would not allowed my previous comment to be posted if i did it.

On the George Lucas topic : that HACK formerly know as "ONCE THE CREATOR" of the Star Wars Universe, yes, once because i come from a radical faction of fans who no longer accept the kind of things he has been doing with the Far Far Away Galaxy.

We take the selective amnesia solution to the extreme of erase him from our minds and if any of us remind he exist we just erase him from our collective memories again.

If you allowed this minor Jedi Apprentice i would like to indicate to your fan base some interest old books to read from the acclaimed author E.E. 'Doc' Smith and Gordon Eklund came the popular book series of Lord Tedric :

-Lord Tedric;
-The Space Pirates;
-Black Knight of the Iron Sphere;
-Alien Realms;

the date of publishing may be a matter for debate but E.E. 'Doc' Smith did already created the original novelette in 1952, pre-dating Star Wars by more than 20 years.

George Lucas only had to change the names of the characters and twist a few things here and there because you know HE IS SO CREATIVE.(roll eyes)

If Frank Miller did with All Star Batman & Robin what George did with Star Wars i would no longer be his fan either, imagine the Miller equivalent for Jar Jar Binks in the Batman universe.

(long pause)

You can stop screaming now.

And briefly back to the female characters coming from George Lucas mind : Princess Leia, never allowed to wear a bra in the first movie, losing more and more clothes at each episode faster than let's say Indiana Jones losing his virginity and at the end reduce from action girl into the proverbial damsel in distress and she was the only woman in the galaxy until Return of Jedi introduce us to Mon Mothma, a Senator from a political entity that no longer exist, only two women in the whole Galaxy and none of them a Jedi, a General/Admiral or even a Captain or a Rogue ??? You got a problem George and don't tell about the women from the prequels, there are only dolls and mannequins in those excuses for wastes of film.

But you are right, Gay people even the evil ones or the annoying ones are always fun in fiction and George Lucas stop to be funny at the special editions, George Lucas can't be Gay because gay people are not hacks and GEORGE LUCAS IS A HACK !

I pay you for the use of your catch phrase later.

Have a nice day.

P.S.: on a second thought the goddamned Batman would crush any stereotypical annoying product placement in lest them 2 seconds so imagine the proverbial Jar Jar Binks death in anyway you want, i really enjoy it.

Capt. Sake "Hancock" Mangusto said...

@CaptainCalvinCat

I agree with everything you said but i think the problem we both share with this series, reasonable criticizingly speaking (an there goes another mouthful from the token foreigner - and at this point - resident guy) is the fact Lewis had scarcely used IronLiz as a character in his stories.

Taking the mordern incarnation of Doctor Who as an example the main hero is always the Doctor but his companions had been more than just companions and all contribute as major key characters for the story line development as my complain stand in this simple fact : IronLiz is just there, Linkara does all by himself or together with his holograms, robots or people doing characters in voice-overs.

Of course his friends have their own shows and cross overs are also scarcely done it and consume a lot of work out and in the end we still have this problem or at least i have with this series in my honest opinion.

But that's actually Lewis problem, we are just audience and i want to see what's gonna happen anyway even if the next new character was Lewis or any of his friends in drag.

@Le Messor

The only thing bridged nicely thanks to that comic was the Atop the Fourth Wall Show and the Star Trek reboot, that comic book is awful and bad as Star Trek Nemesis and i refuse to accept any of the TNG movies as canon and the reboot stands for it self as an action movie and that's it.

I'm still waiting to see a new Star Trek TOS movie on theaters, J.J. Abrams can do a second attempt before cancellation just like they did originally after The Cage in 1969.

He also said, in regards to your feminist views, and I quote: "You are a bunch of 19th Century prudes with no place in modern society." He also says that it doesn't matter how much a female "damsel in distress" character is exploited as long as she is rescued in the end. In fact, he basically says (contradicting the "problems" he had about Liz SUPPOSEDLY being little more than a damsel in distress) that the only roles women have to play in adventure stories are the helpless damsels who need to be rescued.

I think you should just block this guy already. I think he's beginning to get on everybody's nerves.

Gareth said...

@Jarkes

No Jarkes, i am not getting in everybody nerves and do us a favor and follow Lewis example : read all text and interpreted correctly, please don't take my words out of context and as well don't try to put words in my mouth.

About the 19th Century prudes, was aimed to people easily offended by any if not several creative ways women are portraited in books, comic books, movies and tv series and i guess you probably are one of those and in my honest opinion that's sad.

I don't care what the "feminists" have to say about action flicks like-James Bond and i put those feminists between " " just to clarified the fact most of the feminists have better things to do like defend real women from the exploitations suffered in the real world than just complain about any kind of story they dislike bitterly.

Concerning Lewis feminist views i already said in the past he is a gentleman feminist in my opinion and i reasonable argue all the way about his lack of action/assistance/romance/exploitation/or whatever he may creatively ask for Liz to do without disrespecting her or frakking insulting her intelligence, my problem with Liz is the fact she is just there as i already exposed in my comments before and as an example the Doctor Who companions from modern day era and i dare to add the ancient ones too did a lot more than Liz does, but that of course should be a matter of budget and avoiding cliches and still my complain sustains for itself : the show needs more and as one and only regular actress in the cast i believe Liz can provide something, perhaps from her own mind.

Lewis please tell me you are an Actor's Director ? Don't tell me you just say to yourself and your friendly co-stars : “faster” or “more intense” please.

Doesn't matter the answer, i politely request the making of videos and bloopers from your storylines to be posted next year in a monthly or quarterly basis please.

And just finishing Liz was appointed by me as a damsel in distress as an in joke because as also claimed before "Our Hero" instead of respond faster and promptly to the warning call ignored it and obsessively start to review a bad comic book adaptation of a movie he praise and love since childhood and what kind of woman would not be in distress with a man like that ignoring important things like "WARNING WARNING SECURITY BREACH - AN INTRUDER WAS DETECTED ABOARD AND IT'S TRYING TO TAKE OVER THE SHIP - ALL PERSONAL PRESENT YOURSELVES TO YOUR STATIONS IMMEDIATELY, THAT'S NOT A DRILL" ?

Okay, Okay, let's be fair : Nimue warning call was not so incisive and loud as the kind i have inside an actual starfleet vessel but i guess that's a matter of personal tastes since Lewis is clearly a Starfleet Academy graduate from the 23rd Century and i am from the late 24th Century and Hey, at that period things like stolen the Enterprise and sabotage Starfleet vessels was a piece of cake when you know the right persons, you don't succeed on that kind of thing in the 24th Century any...what ? Admiral Janeway stolen a ship ? Oh, she time travel back in the past ? Okay, not my jurisdiction : that's a matter for those suckers from the time police, and don't forget to erase any register of this incident too, we already have enough continuity issues thanks to that "Space Mary Sue" and as a matter of fact go ahead and erase everything about Voyager, i think i need my therapeutic selective amnesia section again before i get another headache.

Live Long and Prosper Lewis.

Actually, Sarkes, I find him kinda amusing, because his "Logic" is somehow extremely ambivalent. He is offended, by teachers, saying that there is a northern and a southern america continent and yet, he offends people himself, by calling George Lucas gay or stuff like that.

By the way, am I the only one, who thinks, that the new trillogy is not as bad as they say it is? Granted, Jar Jar is a pain in the ass, but other things are good - or maybe it is, because I like Nathalie Portman. ^^

And he has one point - that one has to give him - that in the earlier comic-books, when the women vere damsels in distress, it was used as a method to drive the story forward. And it didn`t change that much, because when I see the 93 Version of Superman (Means: Lois and Clark - the new adventures of Superman) our favourite desperate journalist gets captured and captured and captured.

On the other hand, there are comics like Wonder Woman, where the men (Steve 'Rockwell' Trever [yeah, I saw the movie and enjoyed it]) have those "Damsel"-character.

And hence CaptainSake said, that he, in his fanfics is more the james Bond character, I can say, that the Cal I write in my Fanfic is - although he is Captain, he is rash, Impulsive, doesn`t think about things and gets captured in the process, to be rescued by his sexy XO.

Just a question: What the frak do you expect?
After all, that is not a sci-fi-show, it is a show, about a guy, sitting on a couch and reviewing bad comics. The point, that he is the captain of a spaceship itself is scarcely used and therefore it is only logical, that the crew-compliment (IronLiz, the ninja-style-dancer, Linksano and whatever the name of that guy in the tuxedo is) is used more rarely.

The main focus on the show is not how awesome Captain Linkara and his intrepid crew are, but crappy comics. However, when there are things of importance, Ship and crew are used well.

I agree, that it would be interesting, if IronLiz would be shown some ass-kicking, but, that is just me. ^^

CaptainCalvinCat said...

By the way, I wouldn`t say, that a story, featuring a damsel-in-distress-moment is bad per se. if the character is normally quite competent, then – IMHO – there can be their moments, when she can be a damsel in distress.

Let’s just for a moment look at a Manga.
Case Closed – or as I know it: Detektiv Conan – has its quite unique mixture of the cute ass-kicking-girl and the damsel in distress, whose sole purpose it is, to be captured, that the hero can save her.

Of course I am talking about Rachel More – or as I have come to known and like her: Ran Mori. She has her Damsel-Moments, being knocked out by the thief “Kaito KID” or other evil-doers. Then she has her “I am too emotional”-moments, where she cries over something, that is so-not-the-point, but then there are the moments, where she steps in and takes her chances, and fighting people with karate.

Or take Ziva David from NCIS. She has her ass-kicking-moments and she has shown her “Damsel in Distress” moments.

Sam Carter from SG: 1 – Same Story. Quite a competent, brilliant mind and ass-kicking-lead-lady, but tends sometimes to get captured.

Same Story with the Charmed ones, who seem to spend at least once every episode, being knocked out by a demon or something else.

I have nothing against a well rounded character, who has some minor damsel-in-distress-moments, where she needs to be saved.
But I have something against the exact same plot-device of the “beautiful woman in the skimpy clothes needs to be saved” when it is her only purpose to be in the show or the movie.

Take the James Bond Movie “The world is not enough”. Honestly, although they said, it was such a shitfest, I liked the movie. Why? Of course partly, because of Denise Richards as Lara-Croft-Lookalike. She was smart, she was sexy, she knew, what Renard could use the stolen plutonium for… of course, there were the moments, where she was tied up or in the water with the tank-top really hugging her curves.

I like Lois Lane, normally. She is smart, she is sexy and she is tough. But then, I dislike her sometimes, because sometimes, the only purpose of her being smart, tough, and sexy, is, that she can become the damsel in distress and being rescued by Superman.

That is something, I don’t want to do with the characters I write. At least not the female ones. I don’t have any problem with the fact, that my Cal is suffering from something, that I call “the cat-factor”, which is a nice word for him, being captured, hurt, knocked out, hypnotized, stabbed, shot, drowned, drugged, because of either stupidity, a big mouth and a glorious bad timing.

And no, all adventures and peril scenes would be about not be a bunch of homosexual heroes rescuing each other. There might be some heroines, that would save the guy. Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn (Gotham City Sirens – why not use them as anti-heroines?), Batgirl – and of course Ziva, Seven, T’Pol and Agatha. ^^

Just my five cents.

And since I'm more obsessive about Star Trek, I point out that the line is in the movie in the review, but it's from LATER in the movie - the next scene. When he goes over to Spock he simply says, "Captain?" and then Spock gets up and tells the Trainees to go the briefing room. The next scene, while Spock is waiting outside the simulator room, Kirk walks up and asks, "Aren't you dead?"

Do you realize that kind of stuff hurts a lot in real life right ? I re-start read comics, physical and digitals alike, and the amount of scenes that should kill the non-superpowered character and the stunt person are astonishing, if the geography classes at schools in the USA are screwed then the physics classes must had been replaced by magic & malabarism a long time ago, fiction has nothing to do with suspension of disbelief anymore, now is something more like sustentation of pure faith against overwhelming odds.

Anyway, you character look like a clumsy masochist while my own is a paranoid sadist and the last nostalgic chauvinist in a Galaxy ruled by PC regulations with an ego that rivals the Great Galactical Newt a.k.a. I hope the health insurance on your fleet is better than mine.

I think is better we move this conversation into the next video, i watch three times already and i think maybe Lewis is finally getting the message but "SPOILER ALERT" his writing is becoming a little bit cheesy and cliché-esque, his direction, art and special effects are flawless as the budget may allowed but Lewis creativity is starting to be predictable.

The green screen shots are actually filmed in two separate places - the review portions are filmed in my office (with everything crammed together in the space as best as I can) and the storyline stuff I filmed separately a few weeks ago in my living room with a much larger green screen (both of which fold up into a little circle thing that can be stored a lot more easily). ^_^

It is really not that difficult to keep things on topic, Sake. He, thats funny. I thought, it would be the other way around, that you have those reviewing parts done in your living room, and the parts with the story line in a studio...

Just a question concerning Missingno.1 - erm... the dancing ninja disappeared two years ago, am I right? So, since when did you plan all those things with Missingno? Since the beginning?

For a few reasons. One was to give them something extra, something to talk about and be excited for. After all, about half of my audience hasn't read a single comic book in their life but still enjoys the reviews, so me announcing that I'm going to review something well-known in the comics world doesn't have as much impact as saying "this episode will conclude the storyline."

The other reason is to be an homage to comic book-style storylines, ranging from villains with personal grudges to world conquerors and etc. I'm going to always try to make each storyline feel unique or have its own defining characteristics, but we'll see how long that can be sustained for. XD

On this subject, I'm cutting Linkara a lot more slack than I used to.

Why?

Because as bad as Linkara is, at least he isn't the Nostalgia Critic.

We had THREE gimmick-based reviews in the same month, one after another.

First, we had the pointless musical review, then we had that annoying Ghost of Christmas Future interrupting what was otherwise a decent review, and then we got a pointless parody that feels like a rip-off of the Angry Video Game Nerd's Christmas special from 2010.

At least Linkara spreads his gimmicks further, to the point that he can go entire months without gimmicky reviews.

At least Linkara waits until the review is over before sending in the gimmicks, thus the gimmicks don't actually interrupt the review (like Doug's gimmicks do).

At least he's genuinely trying to tell a story, unlike Doug doing the video reviewer equivalent of jingling keys in front of an infant.

At least Linkara tries to put actual weight into his stories, to the point that "making a big deal out of not liking a movie" ISN'T a recurring trend in his stories.

And at least Linkara's gimmicks have lasting consequences on the show (seriously, is everyone gonna ignore the fact that Doug's gun can kill angels? Or that Doug has died and come back to life more times than Jean Grey?).

It just makes Doug feel like a really desperate Other impersonating Doug rather than the real Doug. And when the leader of the Dream Team starts resembling an Other, you have to wonder about his position as leader.

Capt. Sake "Hancock" Mangusto said...

And at least don't you have anything better to do than complaining about oranges and apple when apparently you clear like bananas more than anything else.

Dear Lord don't you think you are presenting your complains about a guy you despise in the wrong show ?

Let the boys work, they have different styles and you can't ask any of the three stooges to switch parts because would never work except in the case of a parody and that's a stretch.

And I DO suscribe to the "if you don't like it, don't watch it" philosophy...in that I don't watch ANY of the Others. Not even the popular Others like Phelous, Angry Joe, Obscurus Lupa, Nostalgia Chick or Todd in the Shadows.

That's why I just don't get references that pertain to any of their shows. Who is P-12? What is this talk about Phelous being immortal? Who is Corporate Commander? What's the deal with Diamanda Hagan (why is she hated even by people who like the rest of the Others, and why does she call herself "mistress of evil"?)? What's the big deal about Suede returning (he's just another Other, nothing special about him whatsoever)?

Linkara is bad, but he's watchable, just like any other member of the Dream Team. None of the Others are watchable. At all.

I want to reiterate the fact that, unlike Lord Humorless Fuck, I LOVE Linkara and I almso never miss an episode of the show.

And I do love the storylines. It gives the show a sense of legitimacy that other internet shows don't have, and they encourage the viewer to keep watching the video after the actual review part is over.

And hey, when it comes to turning a review show into an action-based show, Linkara has lonelygirl15 beaten.

Also, I wish everyone, and especially Sake Mangusto, a very merry Christmas!

Say Linkara, what do you think of the fact that some people think that Khan is justified in blaming Kirk since he never checked on them in the 15 years they were stranded on Ceti Alpha V?

Some are fond of calling Kirk a jerk because of this and him cheating on the Kobayashi Maru. I was curious what your thoughts are since I really respect your opinions.

Maybe he is a little to blame in that regard, but no one could have calculated that another planet in the system would explode and screw everything up.

As for the Kobayashi Maru test, I've stated my reasonings on that in the second video - it's a part of Kirk's character and frankly I like his solution. If the test designed for you to fail, then the only way to win is to step outside the boundaries of the test.

Thank you for responding. I pretty much agree with you on that. I know there are some people out there (I.e. Lindsay Ellis) who regard Kirk as a horny manchild so I wanted to see what you thought. I did see your second video and I loved how you pointed out how the order of the dialogue screwed up the emotional core of the scene.

Ah, see, this franchise is old enough and the movie happened long enough ago that it's transcended the movie tie-in cash grab and evolved to the nostalgia cash grab. If the comic actually resembles the script of the movie in any way, shape or form, consider yourself extremely lucky.

I recently got a trade that collects the adaptations of the TOS-era Star Trek movies and it does fix one thing, though not really the right thing. The famous speech at the beginning of the comic here is moved to the end like in the movie.

It's amusing that I can easily find this movie's adaptation in the trade as all the page borders are black and stand out from the white of the other five. It also uses different cover art for at least this issue.

In hindsight, Muffled!Khan sounds an awful lot like Dark Knight Rises' Bane.
