wauw... It happened.

Well folks, if you don't like the video, remember to be mad at me, not Linkara, I wrote and editted this thing. Oh yeah, and it's my terrible Danish accent you have to sit throught.. you are welcome.

Lewis Lovhaug how-ever is THE MAN! for agreeing to do this. Worship him you fools, worship him.

Dane? Very thick accent, I could still understand her though.

I love older shows, they have so much more optimism and strangely enough, a lot of them are better written then what we get in shows these days, if very predictable.

Awwhaww! ^_^ Sofie is so cute. I think I'll start watching her videos over at the Agony Booth. Although, I don't know what that book was she was reading from, but it sounded like fascism rather then feminism.

I mean no disrespect to her (Sorry I didn't catch her name in the video) But I had SUCH a hard time understanding what she was saying half the time :(

Nice crossover, happy holidays you two.

Hehehe. Loved the back and forth between you 2. Although I've never bothered to watch this show, when a channel I could get actually aired the reruns, I think you raised some good points.

Fiery Little One

Anonymous said...

It was pretty brave to start by playing into the stereotypes of feminists - I hope that doesn't draw out too many negative comments.

This is my first time seeing your reviewing partner. At first I thought she was English. I liked her!

And I agreed soooo much with your points about needing characters who have fun and are likeable.

In another recent thred, somebody (else) asked you to review DV8. I read that for a little while, but dropped it because the characters were so unlikeable.

Anonymous said...

And thus Liv managed to point out (directly or indirectly) the majority of my gripes with feminism nowadays
THANK YOU!

Kimarous said...

Eh... not particularly fond of the RLM girl. I don't know if she was trying to hard to play up the "awkward" angle or if she just flat-out WAS awkward - either way, it was too much. It took at least five minutes to get to the point; I should not feel compelled to skip ahead in a video to get to the actual meat of it. Speaking of which, said meat was rather... bland.

I try to keep an open mind about things and I'm usually quite supportive of any crossover between artists, but given how this one turned out, I'd discourage doing any more with her, at least until she ups her game.

The Casual Catholic said...

That was so sweet of you Linkara. It was an overall fun crossover, but that ending really gave the shippers a bit of new firepower. Good luck with that.

Anonymous said...

Oh YHWH, that dialogue. Not between you and your co-reviewer Linkara. In the show. There was actually a time when that kind of dialogue was considered good?

And the higher-ups are convinced that Trevor was trying to set up the destruction of military weapons. In a vehicle that nearly blew him up if Wonder Woman (who he had no way of predicting) hadn't saved him. And this plan, even assuming he would try to live, would assume that he would deliberately drive around in a vehicle rigged to explode just to destroy some weapons. And they weren't even valuable weapons. And Trevor's superiors, instead of quietly investigating him, TELL him that he's under suspicion. Again, THIS is supposed to be an intelligent story?

And Trevor, under suspicion of being a traitor, decides to go alone to this place for information about the set-up without even contacting his superiors, maybe getting the FBI involved?

I'm sorry Linkara, but just because Wonder Woman isn't torturing a man for information doesn't mean that this is good.

Cenobite829 said...

This was an awesome review. I really liked her points about how it looks fun to be Wonder Woman and that she is likeable being something that should be a no brainer but so many forget. I hope to see more between you two.

Not as far as I can remember.. at least not in life-action hollywood flicks.

There are some women whom looks like they are having fun, Riversong seems like she enjoys holding that gun and flirt to left and right while she kicks butt, and she is a okay likeable person over-all, so well, they do exist, but they are few.. and i can't for the life of come up with one single life-action movie adaptation of a comic book heroin like that. Catwoman had fun but was an ass person, Supergirl was just a dope, thus not really that likable.. and mostly, the miss's are required to be so serious that the whole thing are falls flat. Thank god for seargant Coulhon in Wreck it Ralph pointing it out and make the fun of it it deserves.

#The Casual Catholic#

Well just to be clear, Lewis never agreed to precise that ending, I ad-libbed it and sort of like it, so I kept it.. I don't even know if he is okay with it... erhm..

But yeah, i would be okay with any shippers X)

Sofie Liv Pedersen said...

*MasterSeijin*

The book that I wrote from was blank! which was part of the joke, it was supposed to show-case some of the problems I have with modern feminism that.. you can pretty much turn it into any-thing and use it as an argue against or for any-thing, as long as you label it feminism, and then make it suit your own immediate need... I don't think that many even knows what they preciesly want with feminism, and a lot of people just use it to by twisting it around to suite their own immediate need, which was what I was parodying.. or trying to.

*Kimarous*

Well.. I am awkward.. I speak another languet.. but part of the act was also THAT LINKARA IS RIGHT THERE IN MY VIDEO! :O

My character persona is also.. generally, awkward.. that's part of a person I decided to play up to create a character.
I am a little person in seize, I don't own grace, neither in real life, and I speak a foreign languet so I have a weird accent... which is my real accent... yeah.. knew people would ask if I didn't adress it immediately in the video <_<

And yeah.. five minutes IS to long, I agree compleately, I usually when make cross-overs, try to get to the point quick as possible as a thumb rule.. but.. Linkara was there, I got self indulgent.. heh..

But thankfully, none of you have to bother with me ever again to enjoy your lovely Linkara videos X)

I was okay with it. =D

Sofie Liv Pedersen said...

HURRAY! I will have shippers!.... my secret goal all along. hehehe..

also I do apologies for spelling mistakes in above messages, first now as I read through them I realise those spelling mistakes, and of cause I can't just correct them.

"I read from a blank book." not "Wrote." .. hey look, i'm awkward!

Anonymous said...

Huh, so that was a Danish accent? That's interesting, to my inexperienced American ears you sound a lot like one of my professors from Germany. It's kind of cool actually.

Sekele said...

"For real...? Nobody ever considered making a feemale heroine who's nice and is having fun with what she does...?"

I did, but I don't work for any major movie or comic company

But if you'd like to see something like that, you should try "Marcline and the Scream Queens" by Boom Studios (a spin-off of the Adventure Time comic series, based of the Cartoon Network show of the same name)

"n another recent thred, somebody (else) asked you to review DV8. I read that for a little while, but dropped it because the characters were so unlikeable."

You don't read DV8 to like the characters, you read it to laugh at their deviant behavior
that's what the title means

Anonymous said...

While you're accent can be thick I love you Sofie, you're one of the few people I enjoy over there on the Agony Booth and one of the few people I watch the videos of in the old TGWTG blog section when you posted there. And I was excited to see this. Of course I am a huge Linkara fan. This was a great crossover, and it was a lot of fun. I think it may have been more fun if it something else, but it was still fun. I guess one complaint that you already heard was it took to long to get started. But otherwise, it was fun to see you both together!

Ramses IJff said...

Eh, not terribly fond of this one. No offense to mss. Pedersen, but the accent is way too much, to the point where I couldn't comprehend several sentences, even after rewinding several times. The way the material was handled was also a bit off, to the point where I felt that the video was less about that and more about the reviewers themselves.

On the other hand, mss. Pederson did make a good point regarding the lack of female characters that are just fun. The start and the beginning were also pretty strong, though, again, that accent. I know accents are natural, but I also know (from personal experience) that with some practice you can at least repress it a bit.

And just to add another positive; the editing was well done.

TimeTravelerJessica said...

Awww Sofie's so cute.

And it's really funny y'all should do a review over that raises the point about likeability because I just wrote a paper over that for my British Literature class - we were supposed to take points from Mary Wollstonecraft's Vindications of Rights of Woman and apply them to modern works and I made the point that a highly generic "strong female character" isn't any better than old stereotypes because you're still saying that it's not a woman's personality that makes her interesting or important. I think you guys made that some point very well.

Lizard-Man said...

I'd complain about a few editing hiccups I thought I saw, I can't really because I make a lot of the same. It was pretty decent review and I could understand her most of the time.

Although I'm trying to understand that first cut-away joke about Linkara having magical powers and stuff. I didn't get that one.

Anonymous said...

Well Ms. Sofie Liv I could understand you perfectly and you and Linkara where Amazing together. Darn it Lewis, this girl was throwing herself at you. a beautiful smart attractive funny and real female was asking you out! AND SHES AMAZING! This review was epic!! Also THANKY OU FOR POINTING OUT THE TWO IMPORTANT THINGS for a REAL CHARACTER! essptionally the female heroine crowd, but to be fiar it seems like wonder woman got it right so Idk why Linkara is always so milfed about everyone getting wonder woman wrong, see this is proff that they got it right! :)

Anonymous said...

Yay, another Dane ^(")^.During the intro I was thinking "but that accent doesn't sound da..oh, there it is! Yep, she's Dansih."
anyway good review, I liked the interaction, and thanks to that ending, every Danish fan is probably currently looking for a good Linkara cosplay set... I mean a fellow fan wants sex we can't deny her that, can we? XD

Sofie Liv Pedersen said...

*Anonymus* "So that's a Danish accent."

Yeah.. yeah it is.. and that's not to surprising I sound kind of like a german, our way of announciate stuff is very similar, we are neighbouring countries, also I do speak a little german. Glad you like it.. it's kind of what I am stuck with right now X)

*Ramses IJff*

Yeah.. when you have been a genuine fan of some-one for a good while and then get to do some-thing like.. it does become self indulgent, just.. when will I ever get any chance like this every again?
I can always talk more about Wonderwoman, and I probably will, as people seems to love it when I talk about that single subject.

Repress the accent a bit.. urhm. Well we all have accents! an american accent is also an accent, I think what you mean is that I can steer my accent in another direction.
And.. I am actually working on that, I re-hearse my announciation quite often, all though the thing is, I am not aiming for an American accent, I am aiming for an Oxford accent.. mostly because it's easier to master for me as I have an easier time with round vowels in the english languet.

There is not much I can do about my accent, other than what I all-ready do... so.. yeah.. the world is a big place mate. Check out the Renegado on the booth, he is a mexican!

*TimetravelerJessica*

awww, thanks X)

Yeah, that is a point I like to point out myself quite often, what we need are women whom are actual characters, with flaws and short-comings, whom gets called out on those short-comings and have to over-come stuff, which is how I believe, you make an engaging character.. and it doesn't matter whether it's a male or female character.

One of the many problems with feminism also is it sets up so many god damn rules for female characters that there is nothing left to make an actual character off.. it's all kind of back-wards that way at this point.

*Lizard-man*

It was an exposition joke, the main characters are very obviously exchanging dialouge which is pure exposition for the sake of the audience getting to know what is happening, it's almost before they could turn around and say. "Steve is in danger, wink wink." "Did the nazis do that? wink win" "Yes, and he was carrying weapons, wink wink, I am going to leave the room now, wink wink."

That's what you call very exsposition heavy dialouge, and this episode is full of it.. not all of the Wonderwoman episode are like that, thankfully, but this is, and I found that highly amusing.

Great Vid, really enjoyed it. Sofie is sweet and likeble and seems to be a really interesting girl! Will have to check her vids out, too. :)

But I didn't understand the last sentence! I played it over and over again - and I still don't know who has maybe what (Skype?).
The rest was okay, I'm kinda used to accents by now, but this last sentence just flew by to fast :(

Nice video. :)
First I thought the accent sounded a bit like British accent too. It was a bit though but got used to it. :)

Hey, Sofie — You seem like you know what you're doing and have some interesting ideas but I can't watch the video after that 'what feminism means' joke.

I read that you said you have problems with its modern form too, but having dealt with people that believe that feminism does mean that just puts an awful taste in my mouth.

Keep up the interests though!

This crossover was a lot of fun. I didn't have much trouble understanding Sofie personally, maybe that comes from spending a decent amount of time hanging out with exchange students in college. I enjoyed the dynamic between Sofie and Linkara.

Anonymous said...

Hey, Mr Grouchy Comic Reviewer :) Good on you for getting involved. Although I'll admit that Sofie's half of the dialogue was a bit laboured in places, her English is way better than my Danish will ever be! Free pass! Her hamminess and Linkara's grouchiness made a nice contrast, and I appreciated the nostalgia. A fine effort.

Sijo said...

Never heard of Sofie before, but I liked her, and the crossover worked especially well, congratulations to you both.

The Linda Carter WW TV show has a special place in my heart, sure it was cheesy but for a kid growing up in the 70s it was the Bomb (and she was -and still is!- so pretty! ;) ) And you are right, the fact that Carter was such a nice person (in real life too I hear) probably had a lot to do with that too.

Melissia said...

I rather liked it, it was funny!

And your Danish accent is cute, don't let anyone tell you otherwise :D

"She's Likable!" I swear I could listen to that accent all day ^_^

Sofie Liv Pedersen said...

*Lynx*

The last sentence was "Well I suppose Spoony has a Skype to!"

and thus. I went on out there to harrase the rest of the legenday channel awesome cast... <_<

*Joshua Miller*

Well, that joke was preciesly all about show-casing what I don't like about feminism, it's preciesly meant to show-case how people can twist the words in "Feminism." to suit their own immediate needs, and make it mean what-ever, it's preciesly about how I can say the word. "Feminism." and a bunch of guys will feel like they have to support me, and I agree, that is bull-shit, I always said, stupidity does not require a gender.

There's even.. some men, whom are loud out-speakers for feminism these days.. not going to mention names, whom can seem kind of patronizing as they take defence for the women around them, as if they feel slightly guilty or some-thing.

And again, that again gives certain women the validation to twist the term feminism to mean what-ever, and make it suit their own needs.

That's part of the reason I keep saying that I am not a a feminist myself, all I have, are my own opinions, just my own, and when I am not a feminist, I can feel free to poke fun about all the troubles I do have with feminist, so.. yeah.

*Shadowflame*

Thank you, believe me I will, because I enjoy all of this so very much!
it's been a year now, and well, like every-body else I started out being really shitty at this, with an even thicker accen than now, but hopefully, i'll continue getting better this year, I certainly hope so.

*Melissia*

Aww, thank you.
Well, I am still working on improving my english.. especially when it comes to longer sentences can I end up stumble quite a lot. but lets face it, my accent will never fully dissapear, Beanzie and Sad Panda has been doing this for a while, both obviously still have french accents, so yeah, we are foreign people we have accents, so I am glads some people like it.

The Monocle Man said...

Does anyone honestly still give a shit about the Agony Booth?

And if you had to pick an old-school text review site to do a crossover with, why not Mutant Reviewers From Hell, or Stomp Tokyo, or even badmovies.org?

Sofie Liv Pedersen said...

*The monocle Man*

Because I was the one contacting Lewis asking him, and he very graciously and generously agreed to record the script that I wrote, and give me the footage so I could edit together the review.

Beside, the Agony booth is a none-profit site where all new contributors only do their stuff because we enjoy doing it, and Lewis did all of us a huge favour agreeing to this. There's nothing to gain here, except for the awesomness of now being able to say. "I did that!"
Which in itself.. is pretty damn awesome.

Danes have made it onto the internet now? Hide your children!

Ok, now that my Swedish bias toward Danes has been dealt with, let's get to the rest of this comment.

I thought this was great! A bit rough around the edges, but hilarious nonetheless, and it brought out some good points about female characters in popular media.

I suppose this is what counts as a fan dream come true, getting to review something with one of the greats of the internet, and I think it really shines through how fun it was :D

Thanks for the laughs, both of you!

Actual episode is fine (yet not great), but the opening/ending were badly paced.

The Linkara character was always better as a foil than standalone, but you two agree too much during the actual review.

The Monocle Man said...

I'm sorry, but your site is as relevat as Pogs or Tamagotchis.

In any case, I lost all interest in your site once the recaps started aiming the pretentious artsy crowd more and more, to the point that the pop culture references became stupider and more forced (a prime example of this is the "Zoom" recap. When that chick leviates the rock, everything in that pic suggest a Dark Phoenix reference, or even a Carrie reference, but you went with a Spider-Man reference, even though Spider-Man has nothing to do with that scene or that movie).

Also, I still won't forgive you for your endless whining about the cinematography in "Factory Girl". I really have no idea what "cinematography" is and I don't care, so your constant bitching about it was grating after a while.

Finally, Mutant Reviewers From Hell was always better than you. And they are also non-profit.

hehe, Denmark, Sweden and Norway, we are like three irresponsible siblings, we like to fight all the time, but in reality we are friends and if some-one threatens one of us, all we support that one country. We are called "The sibling countries." for a reason X)

Scandinavian High five!

And yeah.. yeah I indulged myself, the huge thing here was that I had Linkara there, I can always talk about Wonderwoman, so that was the aspect I exploited, the fact that it was him and me. My own fans all seems to love being able to just watch us interact, Linkaras fans seems to be split down the middle, half is annoyed by the long opening, the other half find it funny enough to not matter.

Well, if I ever get the chance to do any-thing like this again.. which is not some-thing I would count up, but hey, here is to hope, didn't even think this would happen.
I'll make sure to make the intro as short as possible, do the actual review, and then safe the pleasentries for the end so people can just turn off the review don't they wish to watch inter-actions! that is how I usually do it any-way, cause I am well aware, people are here for the review. I might want to make a full sketch show, but that is not why the people are here! and well.. I don't wish to annoy any-one, I am here, to try and entertain and spread some smiles, and that's it, dot, final. Now i'm rambling urm... SCANDINAVIAN HIGH FIVE!

Sofie Liv Pedersen said...

*The Monocle man*

Erh... I seriously have nothing to do with that.

Here's how the booth work, much like the TGWTG glasses site, it's a contributors site.

There's a bunch of contributors, each contributor makes their own stuff, and the site distributes it!

Around a year and a half ago, the booth was in serious peril and it was just about to close down for good and for-ever, as the site manager was talked into one last try, by taking another direction, and if he hadn't done this, yes ten years of work would have been closed down now.
That new direction is called video producers, and he gathered new video producers from around the net, one of those producers, happens to be me! and I was asked if I wanted to join last year, December 2011, up untill that point, I had nothing to do with the site.

The site has gone through major changes this last year, we have gotten a new solid cast of video producers (some of them even profesional film folks in their real life, check out the porn critic) And we the videos producers cast are doing our best to work together and look like one working entity, hopefully also sepperating us a bit from the TGWTG site by being a little different.

I don't know what article you read, but please remember, that article was the work of a contributor and doesn't make up for the entire site. the idea of several contributors is that you don't have to watch all of them, but can elect those you like to follow up on.

But ones again, this video happened because of me! it happened because I went to Lewis and asked him, and he very graciously said yes, an event that made my jaw drop open.

If you enjoyed it WEEE!
If you didn't, fear not, you shall never have to bother with me again.

Mutant reviewers from Hell? Maybe they are.. never heard of them, but maybe they are. I wouldn't know since I have never visited that site.

... still I am the one who got to make a Linkara cross-over.

You don't have to justify yourself to him, Sofie. I know who this person is and while of course he is free to have his opinion, he has shown in the past an unwillingness to listen to facts, make up his own for whatever suits him, and then criticize when we don't adhere to his version of events. The only reason I allow him to continue to post here is because I do believe in allowing people the chance to express their thoughts... even if he borers on being a troll.

Honestly, I really like the crossovers, especially with someone I may not have seen or heard of before. It's through crossovers that I've found quite a few different reviewers that I've become fans of, when I may not have looked at their material outside of the crossover (Diamanda and Bennet come to mind immediately). Heck, I had never even heard of the Agony Booth before, now I need to check it out to see what other types of reviewers are out there, so thank you!

I really like the crossover here too, you two have some good chemistry and, maybe it's because I'm used to listening to different accents in my work and uni life, had no problem understanding you. It's always nice to see a positive review, I don't think there's enough of them in the general negativity that seems connected to Internet reviewing. Keep up the good work!

First off, right after this review I went to Youtube and played the full theme of Wonder Woman.

I'm old enough to have remembered the Wonder Woman television after it made the time jump, and had been a fan ever since. One of the things about Wonder Woman that I whole heartily agree with is that she is a likable character. She's also still one of the strongest female characters that, in my opinion, portrayed in television and almost any other media that I can think of off the top of my head.

OK, first of all, I really like your point of view, Sofie, on feminism. I am a guy and I don't really consider myself a diehard feminist because I am not qualified to discuss it. There are not really that many female empowerment characters that bother me except for maybe River Song. Her constant double entendres get on my nerves. Also, she was basically raised from birth to be a Doctor groupie so it sort of diminishes her character a bit knowing that she can't really think for herself.

Your accent does take getting used to but honestly the only real issues I have with this review is the fact that I don't really like superhero shows from the 70s. Also, your gushing over Linkara went on too long just a wee bit. I get you are excited and want to indulge yourself. Trust me I know the feeling. But do an interview if you want to do that. I would love to hear you two just...talk. No script, no theme, just talk.

Now I know I probably haven't endeared myself to you with my criticisms and for that I apologize. In recompense, come to the Way Station anytime you are NYC. They have a TARDIS bathroom

I'm assuming this is a review of the first episode of the actual show because it's NOT the original movie which became the pilot. In that film, like the original comic book story, "Diana Prince" DIDN'T appear until the last five minutes of the movie. Good review if not perfect.

I don't think it was so much the accent that took some getting used to as juts how high-pitched it was. There's also a bit more time between lines, which is something I've noticed Nash and a few others from TGWTG tend to do. Entertaining review, just dunno if the intro was the best direction to go with things, despite the fun Doctor Who reference.

But hey, maybe I'm just critiquing for its own sake. I HATE CHANGE! FIND ME SOME CHANGE SO I CAN URINATE ON IT! BLARGH!

Sofie Liv Pedersen said...

*13th Doctor*

... yeah.. yeah I get it. Don't make the intro that long ever again. got it, I wont, I swear.

Unless I have a huge set-piece and the chance to set-up and entire sketch with people standing in the room with me and several different characters.

It was a choice I made because I knew Lewis would post it on his blog, because I knew if I didn't adress who I am people would be confused, and if I didn't explain what my accent was.. people would also be confused.
You would not believe how often i've been accused of using a fake accent.
Why on earth I deliberately would use a fake accent, I don't know, but there you go.
It's a choice I made, to make a prober set-up before to start to review, so people would know who the hell I am. We all know who Lewis is right? the man needs no introduction, he is that great.
And I also decided to try and make a different dynmaic when it comes to cross-overs, instead of "the two compeating strangers act." I feel is the thing being used over and over people is a bit tired of, I tried to play it up that I am a fan, and yeah.. went on to long, I even agree, I was even very doubtful as I wrote it and editted, but at last I thought.
"Oh hell, I can always talk about Wonder woman, I'll never be able to make a sketch with Linkara again, so yeah."

I'm actually one of the few not really minding Riversong.. but I'll get into that on a later time in a entire video, that's a can of worms not to be opened right now.
Mostly I actually like that she is established as being slightly insane and really is... I like that.

WOOH! i'll remember that! NYC! ... i've never even been to America. Urhm.. I've met Tom Baker twice! And he told me I was beautiful, then gave me a jelly baby!
That's much cooler :P
Also Mark Gatiss was there and thought my idea for a Doctor who episode sounded genuinly cool B)

*Anonymous*
No, this was the first episode of the Lynda Carter serial.
True enough, before this serial there was another one, with a blond wonder woman, whom was exstremely un-faithful to the comic, and who knew people hated that pilot so the show got cancelled even before it began, making way for the Lynda carter show where every-thing was changed.

*Peter D*

Haha lol!
I don't even think this even counts at change, I am not going to be a part of channel awesome now, this is not going to be a permanent feature, and I am not going to randomly invade Linkaras videos.
Not that I wouldn't like for any of the above things to happen.. I would love for it to happen X)
But it wont, don't worry, don't sweat, nothing has changed XD

My accent high pitched? huh, new one, other people have complained that my voice itself is to low pitched and there-fore ugly.. Then again other people says that my accent is sexy! :D

Also I am a woman, of cause my voice is higher pithced -_-;
Okay some-times it was more pitched than usual for comedy effect here, but.. yeah..

Glad people like that joke, I did think it would be kind of funny to try and pull 'the always sexy and cool hallo sweety' and then utterly fail at it, having no response what so ever.. that pretty much establish who my character is X)

Most of all, this was just fun and a priviliege :)

...Tahmid, are you not familiar with Atop The Fourth Wall? WHERE BAD COMICS BURN?

I'm certain that Linkara is sick of saying this, so I will relay the message; it has been stated on the show and in convention QnA's (nearly a hundred times by now, I'm sure) that Atop The Fourth Wall is SUPPOSED to be about bad comics. it is mentioned in the theme song. it is the slogan of the show.

Linkara does not review good comics because there is more to talk about with bad comics; whether it's laughable dialogue, poor storylines, unlikeable characters or shoddy artwork. when you understand WHY something is bad, you can APPRECIATE the good. he can recommend good comics, but it's never going to be the focus of an episode.

Weeeeell to be fair I HAVE reviewed good comics before and I will do so again.

It's usually the Golden Age stuff that's actually pretty decent for its time. Batman: Noel, which we're covering next week, is actually a really good comic, but it's Christmas, so we're making an exception.

You're right though in that bad comics are the rule around here, which is bent on occasion for various reasons.

OK, that makes sense and I also grow tired of the whole "competing reviewers" schtick. It is so played out. This is the first time I saw you so the length intro was probably necessary. I bet you must be sick to death of people complaining about your review. I am sorry about that. I will make sure I check out your Agony booth vids.

One thing I forgot to comment on. You said you don't like "serious" superheroes. Guess you are not a fan of Batman. Oh, well.

Sofie Liv Pedersen said...

@13th Doctor

Oh hell no! I LOVE batman!

See! http://www.agonybooth.com/video544_Justice_League_Secret_Origins_Animated_Series_2001_DCAU.aspx

The Christopher Nolan movies? ... urhm.. I have a strange relationship to them. I loved them the first time I saw them.. I was absolutely astounded by the Dark knight when I saw it in cinema years ago... and then havn't seen it since and don't feel like I wanna see it again honestly.
Also.. the Dark knight rises.. when-ever that movie pops into a conversation I always end up mocking it, even when I try to defend it... that's not very good.

How-ever! I read Batman comics, I've seen the TAS show several times, i've seen Justice League tas several time, and Bats is the greatest in it, I even enjoy Adam wests Batman (Hah, you don't need to be serious to enjoy Batman silly.) Oh, and loved the Brave and the bold.

I am.. sort of a superhero dweeb myself.

All that "Serious superheroes." it's a tough concept to talk about, it's a whole other can of worms which needs context.
Because yeah.. a superhero movie should take itself seriously.. to a degree. Neither do I want it to go compleately over-board with taking itself to seriously, a mistake continuesly being made, it's about balance honestly.

Why does Avengers work in spite of being the silliest thing coming out last year?
Well.. it also took its characters and their motivation seriously, treated them as competent people whom had flaws.
Then it didn't take awesome fight sequences and none sensisble sciense serious at all.. because it just focused on character and firm simple main plot instead, it had fun.

Doctor who is surprisingly good at striking this balance as well, it lifes in a silly universe with silly none-sensible and rarely even stable rules, it's silly on so many levels and even mocks itself.
But.. it still takes its characters and their personal journey very seriously.. keep it at the characters and let have fun with the surrounding.. is what I am saying.

In the soon reboot of Batman, i'll like to see him swing over Gotham in a bat-arang, having the joker set up an entire show in lights as he sets himself up as a so called "entertainer." Have gotham look all croaked and gothic like, have jokers laughter just sounding over a rainy dark street... and. having it be a characters study of bats this time around would be nice as well.

Yes, I do think it's to early to re-boot Batman.
But. We all know it's going to happen, so I am just airing my fan-girl fantasies here X)

13th Doctor said...

You are right, Sofie. It is about balance. But I think Doctor Who has a bit of a spotty track record when it comes to this but that is mostly due to its WILDLY inconsistent rules towards time travel. Also, the companions go through such intense trauma that it's difficult to go back to making jokes. Season 6 was particularly guilty of this; I expected Amy and Rory to leave numerous times after all the crap they go through which they don't really address. An honest conversation goes a long way, people. Thank God Season 7 actually made you think these people LIKED each other again.

I also get wary of works that mock themselves because if they can't take themselves seriously, why should I? I am probably coming off as an IMMENSE prig but I guess I guess I see nothing inherently silly about costumed heroes. Weird, huh?

As for Batman, I love all the Nolan movies but I am terrified of discussing Dark Knight Rises because when people don't like it, they REALLY don't like it. Love The Animated Series, too. HATE the Adam West series. If you love it, that's fine. But I just can't buy that this is a guy torn up by the deaths of his parents. Plus, the police are boobs and the villains are just stupid. Again, prig.

Also, I don't want any more Batman reboots. I think the story has been told from virtually all angles and I am getting too old to invest in a new Batman

Sofie Liv Pedersen said...

@13 th Doctor

I though Amy would exsperience a miracle and become pregnant again, and that's why they would leave.
That just made a lot of sense in my head.

Well, the show does adress that Amy and Rory has become almost addicted to the life of the doctor, they are indeed all like. "We should leave, you know we should leave right?" "Yeah.. I know. but just one more time, just one more, it hasn't have to be right now!"

I love Doctor who, it's one of my favourite shows out there.
And well, the show has delivered duts ones in a while, but with such a shaky concept, who can blame them? Even when it's a dut episode you can always sense they tried their best.
For me, it's mostly just about all the amazing things you can do with the concept, and I like how the show explore all of it.
Goes every-where.. Dinosaours on a bloody space-ship! YAY! and the episode did deliver on the title, you can't take that away from it.

And as I said, when the concept is so shaky. The key is to keep it at the characters, and since the doctor himself is alien character you can't really relate fully to, the companion is a key element.
Did Amy and Rory stay on a bit to long? arguable yes, it felt like their arch was done a good while back, they had character archs, it was ended, it would be a satiesfied end to leave them there and move on, and then they come back for another fake-out. Yeah.. that did become kind of groaning by the end.
Also, when I view their final send off I can't help but note I would have been happier had one of the previous "Fake send offs." been the real one, I just.. wasn't as satiesfied.
But well, if you can have a good companion where his or hers emotional journey feels real, or have guest appearences of new human characters the episode can focus on, then the outer concept can go as wild as it ones.
A Doctor who christmas carol on a purely scientific plan didn't make any sense, but it wasn't about that, it was about Kafran, and his emotional journey seemed real, so it worked.

Though.. open the season on Amy and Rory, the centurin whom waited for centuries and the girl whom said he was the greatest hero ever.. getting what looked like a really messy divorce... erh.. Asylum of the Daleks is a very flawed episode in my book for so many reasons. (Taking yourself a bit to seriously there guys.. and you are not even going to do any-thing with that divorce but just sweep it under the carpet -_-; I hate you.)

Adams West Batman I view as a pure comedy show and a almost perfect representation of what comics were like at that time, so no, can't hate it, and I think it's funny, it revels in its own sillieness which is what makes it work.
The thing that did re-shape comic book things to what we see them as today, was indeed Batman Tas, before that, the 'serious' hero didn't even exist.

From a historical stand-point, you can't even deny the show its place.
It's what made Batman comics popular again, it's what made the figure big enough to get a Tim burton movie, it's the Tim Burton movie that's the cause of Batman Tas, and Batman tas is a direct inspiration to the entire new direction of comic books at that time, and thus also to works such as. "Batman year one." "Rise of the Dark knight." ext.
Also it invented Batwoman and she proved such a popular character that's she's been a part of almost all other Batman cannons, including the comic verse, since then :)

... don't ask me about Dark knight rises. I'll just end up mocking it, that ALWAYS happens.
Weird movie.. I don't want to mock you yet I do, every single time -_-;

13th Doctor said...

Ok, you are right that Adam West did reinvigorate Batman in popular culture. Plus, as embarassing as it is, it was the first time I experienced Batman as a kid before seeing the 1989 film. It's just growing up and seeing so many different interations really changes your perspective.

When I talk about the inconsistent science, I mainly mean the "Wibbly-Wobbly Timey-Wimey" principle. Specifically, the insane number of stable time loops Moffat gets away with. It just kinda sucks out the drama if things just occurs because time says so.

As for "Asylum of the Daleks", I thought it was kind of refreshing to see tension in their relationship. A friend of mind criticized the episode for that very reason saying that Amy being infertile shouldn't change anything. Now maybe I am talking out my ass but wouldn't that affect a woman in a big way? Plus, Amy has a lot of issues so maybe she can be forgiven for not being rational at this point.

So you think divorce sucks the escapism out of Doctor Who? I gues since the show already covered torture, genocide, mind rape, cloning, ends justifying the means and a whole bunch of other nasty topics, this seemed pretty small potatoes.

See, in my opinion it should have affected her MORE than it did. I've known people who were infertile that reacted MUCH worse than Amy at the news. Instead, the infertility only affected her in that she "wanted to set Rory free!" which is ludicrous on so many levels, not the least of which being FRIGGIN' ADOPTION if HE wanted a kid so badly or just the idea that it would make a difference to him when he waited 2000 years for her.

You phrased that more eloquently than my friend did. See, my friend just thinks that because Rory waited 2000 years that means that their relationships shouldn't be free of problems which is just dumb and kind of insensitive to the situation. But yeah, Rory flatout said he didn't care. I guess maybe Moffat didn't want to make things TOO depressing after Season 6 and didn't want to put Amy through too much of a wringer. I didn't really have too much of a problem with it as a whole because at least some kind of tension was between them. But I can definitely see where you're coming from and I am not really qualified to discuss complex issues such as this.

13th Doctor*

Of cause characters getting a divorce weren't a thing spoiling my escapism.. it just sort of pulled me out of my happy place.

YAY! finally, after a whole year, NEW DOCTOR WHO! oh boy oh boy, what wacky adventures will we have today.

*Divorce*

.....

And well, if you want to make an episode about how shaky their relationship has become, fine. But here it's the B-plot.

And I don't know, having spend so much time just hammering it in with a sledge hammer, that Rory waited for 2000 years. Amy replaced the hero image of the doctor with Rory in her mind, they fought through time and space. In a way that seemed fantastic and fairy-tale like. (yes, in some ways I view Doctor who as a fairy-tale playing by fairy-tale logic.) And then out of no-where divorce. Worst of all.. It's the B-plot of the actual episode! and then it's swepped under the carpet, if you are going to do that, at least use it and have it be a A-plot in a later episode. But nope, it's never brought up again.

The A-plot of Asylum of the Daleks also has its problems by the way. There's some really strong moments in the episodes, but there's also a lot of.. huh? stuff going on.

*Linkara

Yeah, of cause it's a big deal if a woman is told. "You lost your first baby to an insane woman, to be raised to be an assasin, and now you can't have any-more children."

But aside from that B-plot, the show never deals with it, it mostly ignores from that point of.

And if the writers want to ignore it in favour of wacky adventure, I can understand that, it is doctor who not "Real life trauma the television series." But this.. half on half thing in the first episode and then never brought up again, not even in the send off. urhm..

Honestly, my biggest problem with Rory and Amys relationship is that I never doubted for a second that Rory would do any-thing for Amy. But I havn't always be sure that Amy feels the same way, yeah the show kept hammering it in. "Oh I love you, don't leave me." but I never believed it.
Untill "Amys choice." where old Amys speeches about Rory really sold me on her emotions.. I wasn't entirely convinced when she tried to divorce him to set him free.

Ever noticed that? Rorys loyalty is un-wavering, simply, unwavering. Like Sams loyalty to Frodo. and Amy has dumped him or been in doubt or told him to man up so many times.
In fact, Rory is just pushed to the side-line so often that it's almost comical, in spite of this continues unwavering loyalty and bravery.. I want my own Rory is what I am saying..
So what I would have liked to see, would not be Amy having doubts and push him away again. But Rory take a stand and tell about how the exsperiences affected him. He's been affected hasn't he? have occasional 2000 year memories, we never ever focus on that, only Amys problems.

LOL. OK, I can understand that being a crimp on the premiere. Not as bad as tghe doc getting killed for someinexplicable reason but unsettling nevertheless.

"The A-plot of Asylum of the Daleks also has its problems by the way. There's some really strong moments in the episodes, but there's also a lot of.. huh? stuff going on."

Yeah, the pacing was a bit off. Also, Rory being asked to take off his clothes by Oswin for no reason bugged me more than the divorce. I know; my priorities are totally out of whack.

"Honestly, my biggest problem with Rory and Amys relationship is that I never doubted for a second that Rory would do any-thing for Amy.

Yeah, that I found a tiny bit off. Rory was carrying a lot more of the weight than Amy. Perhaps it was an attempt by Moffat to subvery traditional gender roles by having Amy wear the pants in the relationship. Unfortunately, he forgot that relationships are a two-way street. Or at least, they should be.

In building Rory up, Moffat solved one problem but also created an ideal that Amy couldn't possibly live up to. Maybe she felt inadequate because of that. I know I sometimes feel like nothing I do is good enough.

Anyway, I hope I am not being a bother by perpetuating this back-and-forth. I just like hearing the opinions of others. I am not a troll, I promise.

Sofie Liv Pedersen said...

@13th Doctor

No no, you are not a troll!

Believe me, I know a troll when I see one, there was one calling me a facist on my own web-site the other day.

And beside, I am responding aren't I? Why.. because I really love discussing this stuff to! And I can't do that very often, Doctor who isn't that much of a thing in this country. Sigh..

Well, with starting off killing the doctor the last season, at least they started off with an ice-breaker!

Doctor with a cowboy hat, Riversong shooting it, fun, we had five minutes fun before we got there, we got to emerge with the fun.
And well, his death turned into intrique, especially as he popped up again, it made yourself ask. "How? who? I want to know!"

The divorce didn't do any of that, it's the first thing we see, no ice-breaker, no "Welcome back it's nice to be here." no nothing.. and I didn't want to find out why they were divorcing, I just wanted them to.. not divorce.

Now if the show had taken its time, showing Amy getting the message, that she's infertile, struggling with even telling it to Rory at all, starts yelling at him in frustration, Rory growing frustrated with her as well for a couple of episodes. Now that would have been actually interesting, and could have allowed for some character exploration under pressure and stress, but nope it's just. "Divorce." end of the episode. "Haha, never mind." ... -_-;

Amy really runs into the same big problem as so many other female leads and companions. The framing wants her to be this perfect nice special person to hold onto, and no one is like that.

Steven Moffat, I love him! but he is a big offender in the. "I am making female empowerment!" department.

In his mind, the way to make good female characters is to make them sexy and kick ass.. which is fine, but variety would be nice, and I do think he as a person really looks up to women, which is.. fine I suppose. but come on.

"Men are weak, women are strong!" ... urh, thanks? .. What if a woman turns out to be weak one day, that happens right? then what?

All though I do liked the mother aspect of that christmas special, cause that's very true.. you just don't come between a parent and his/hers children, you don't fuck around in such a situation. Any-way.

You know, I liked how Donna actually had low self-worth and created a harsh facade for herself to cover up for it, but had a good heart and over-came her low self worth when it mattered, it was human, it was interesting, I love Donna Noble.

You know what I would like to see in a new doctor who companion.. I think it would be kind of fun with a timid gray mouse whom has a good heart, who wants to go on adventures but doesn't dare.. maybe some-one whom owns a book shop and love the books, but doesn't dare go to far out, yet can't say no when such a fantastic thing is happening in front of her, out of the books, then have to over-come her timidness in big situations and in them, proofs herself to be capable of surprising bravery. I think that would be more impressive to watch, to see such a person change over the course of time and become what she is capable of.
I also think it would create a nice contrast beside the doctor to have a more quiet timid person instead of all the "Loud against loud." we have with every single companion.

... and it would be new.

Sofie Liv Pedersen said...

Sigh, i don't know. Amy is the main companion, miss special.
But god dammit do I feel for Rory so often, you can't never fault him for not doing his best and be unwavering in his loyalty, even laying aside own immediate needs in favour of others. And yet, he is still pushed aside, even the Doctor treats him as if he isn't as important as Amy (thanks doc.) We really needed more empathis on his emotions, and we needed to acknowledge his struggles a lot mroe. Rory also lost a child in these events, Rory also went through so much strain.

The one episode I had hoped for that didn't happen.
An episode where the Doctor and company goes some-where in earths history where the doctor hasn't been before, but every-body recognises Rory, because he apparently saved them in his centurian form, and the Doctor and Rory swaps places for the episode.
I was waiting for that to happen, Rorys episode with Rory character study.. but nope. Sigh.

River shooting the Doctor's awesome hat off AGAIN just to be a bitch. Charming. Also, it threw a bunch of stuff in your face and never gave you the chance to breathe or let things develop. And we had to wait the whole season to clear things up. I am just saying it was a lot to adjust to considering the other season's stretched things out.

"Amy really runs into the same big problem as so many other female leads and companions. The framing wants her to be this perfect nice special person to hold onto, and no one is like that.

Argh, I don't care if a woman kicks ass just make them someone I can relate to. And you are right; it has the potential to be just as much of a sexist cliche as a weak female. It's also why the stripping scene in Asylum of the Daleks annoyed me so much. When a woman asks you to strip, it's funny. When a man asks a woman to strip, hello lawsuit. Again, that may seem like an immature thing to nitpick about but it produced the strongest reaction in me.

"You know, I liked how Donna actually had low self-worth and created a harsh facade for herself to cover up for it, but had a good heart and over-came her low self worth when it mattered, it was human, it was interesting, I love Donna Noble."

YES!!!!!! I mean, how hard is it to write a character who is flawed but good-hearted. Ok, maybe that is harder than it sounds. But they do exist, MOFFAT.

"You know what I would like to see in a new doctor who companion.. Well, it sounds like that is not going to happen anytime soon, sadly. I would like that though.

Got to open presents. Merry Christmas.

Well, one thing is for sure.
To be constantly told that you as a woman is supposed to be sexy, beautiful, kick-ass, stronger than the others, smarter than the others and just all-ready gosh darn perfect and better, never making mistakes.

Oh god the pressure... See, that's why we women can come off as slightly insane some-times, we are under pretty big pressure.

Obviously Moffat can write characters whom are flawed but good-hearted. He is writing for the doctor himself isn't he?
As well as Sherlock, John Watson, Doctor Jackman and all the other bery interesting men he has created. So erh.. stop viewing Women as a different specie, write them the same way, it'll help you.

But well.. Moffat is not the answer, he's shown what he can do with women now, it's very limited. (all though, count my curious, who or rather.. what is Ozwin? What is her deal, I am genuinely very curious now.)

Try Mark Gatiss, he's the one who invented "Molly Hooper." In Sherlock, and absolutely great female character! ... which is funny, cause Mark Gatiss is gay. or perhaps that's what gave him clarity not to just write his ideal woman?
Or here's a thought... get some more female writers, I refuse to believe that there aren't any female writers out there.

All writing classes I've ever been to, there's always been an overwhelming dominance of women, and yet when I look at the industry it's an overwhelming dominance of men. Why? I have absolutely no idea. -_-;

And merry christmas to you to, in my country we celebrate evening of 24th, so I all-ready opened my presents!
Hah! big collectors edition of the Valhalla comics, thanks sis.
