Hi there! I'm a long time fan, first time commenter. Want to say a few things regarding some points you raised in the video.

1. I suffer from severe depression, to the point where I have been on and off meds since my early teens. I want to thank you for giving the issue the respect it deserves. I also want to agree with your other points about the Superman comic, though I do have to admit that the tone of the beginning of that bide

2. This will sound surprising (Or stupid) but I've read only two comics in my life, both of which were actually adaptions of a book I wanted to read, but instead I mistakenly ordered them. I've thought about getting into comics since about the time I started watching this show (I'll admit I hadn't quite accepted how nerdy I was back then) but the only comic shop in my area is more of a... game shop. They just happen to carry comics too. And when I try to ask about certain comics or where to start or any recommendations, their suggestions are always 'just pick one up and buy it'. While I know there are many people out there and many comic shops out there who are a lot more into helping others get started, I don't have the luck of knowing any such person or having any such place nearby.

The point is, could you, maybe as a note below the retrospective video on the Teen Titans, give some information on how to actually get said comics? Are there collections done in the larger format I've seen on the show? What are they called and could I find them online somewhere? I've tried asking others before, but saying 'you know, the teen titans' doesn't really help others understand which series I'm talking about. If you can, that would be greatly appreciated!

Aside from all that, I also want to say that I'm a big fan of your shows and look forward to more!

Long time fan Linkara and now only was this episode informative but still lives up to the great standards you have helped show that Comic Book fans have.
We love the medium and want to see it continue, bringing us epic stories and characters to make us thrill and think.
In conclusion Linkara, I am looking forward to more reviews from you and Happy New Year.

Hey wait a second, if you read every comment...that means...that...
...
I don't think I was going anywhere special with that thought.

I love retrospective crap like this, so this video pleased me. Does that count as constructive criticism? I know I didn't criticize, but I included the word 'crap' in my praise. Totally counts.

Food requires 4 or 5 serious tries before the pallet can become accustomed to it. I'm convinced that the majority of people who don't like food groups, don't like them because they assume that you either will like something or will not like something.

When the truth is, your body takes time to adjust to liking something.

I realize that you hate the Xmen all together. Although no offense to you but you seem to go into a mindset that marvel and dc should only go to you when it comes to making comics. Also in that same mindset believe that you speak for every single comic fan that exists. Sorry to tell you this but comics are not made for just you your not the only one who calls themselves a fan. They are made for all sorts of people in this case the xmen in particular. One last note if the civil war event is so bad then how come it was the story used for marvel ultimate alliance. Plus if onslaught was stupid then he would not of been the boss character to fight in marvel vs capcom 1

Hello Linkara,

I just wanted to say I'm really happy you apolized for the Superman 701. Thanks, it makes me feel a lot better. I wasn't really mad at you when I saw the video because I assumed you just didn't understand. Also I'm one sure you didn't mean any harm. But it's nice to see something like that cleared out.

Other from that I really like your show, and I enjoy watching it every week.

Greetings!

It's a decoration for the spear. :P

I like the idea of the X-men, but crossing it into the Marvel Universe as a whole doesn't make sense for the reason you described.

The spastic thing, I never knew the American version of the word, I just assumed it was the same meaning but not offensive, like retard. Though personally I think you should use whatever usage is suitable for your country. The word 'friggin' also is a dirty word here (the UK), but is said sometimes in American shows that censor the word ass.

On being an expert on comics though. Isn't it something like 10,000 hours makes you a master at something? Wouldn't the same hold true for experts?

I was depressed for a week or two after constantly struggling in school. But luckily, I saw the Thing from Another World #1 review that Monday and I felt a little bit better. So thank you, Linkara, thank you :)

Anonymous said...

Actually in The Brave & the Bold #56 review, he said that he was gonna do a lookback on the New Teen Titans in around Feburary or March ($5 saying that that's when The Magic Gun Saga is gonna end)

Anonymous said...

I don't entirely agree with Linkara about X-men, but I have to agree that people seem to simply disagree because the X-Men are a popular series. There is still much about the way they (and the Marvel universe) are written that makes absolutely no sense. There is nothing wrong with having a stand-in for racial/cultural/political minorities but the X-Men have (at least over the past few decades) been handled very poorly.

To DC : Please stop making Teen Titans comics. They don't make sense anymore in the new 52, where the heroes are supposed to have been present for only a few years and didn't have time to train sidekick. Hell, a lot of the dumbest events of the DC Universe can get traced back to the Teen Titans :

- Identity Crisis : Doctor Light's supposed stupidity has been introduced in the Teen Titans, and let to his infamous retcon.

- Infinite Crisis' Superboy and Countdown were in part created in an effort of DC to wipe out most of the characters (Harlequin, Kon-El, Pantha, Wildbeest, Kid Flash and nearly Nightwing.)

- Battle for Bludhaven is a twofer : it was in part caused by Deathstroke (a Titan villain) leading the onslaught of the Freedom Fighters + the Teen Titans were largely useless, even escalating the situation (Rose Wilson impaling lady Liberty, like her dear father)

- Cry for Justice ? It all came down to screwing up Speedy/Red Arrow/Arsenal, another one of the Teen Titan allumni.

- Countless series (Teen Titans, New Teen Titans, Teen Titans Spotlight, The Titans, Team Titans, Titan West, Terror Titans, Young Justice, the numerous relaunches (Dan Jurgens, Devin Grayson, Ian Churchill)

- By the way, please explain Team Titans to the newbie...

- Also, dubious events like the non-consensual sex between Nightwing and Mirage (shapeshifter who took the form of Starfire), the constant character derailments of Donna Troy, Rose Wilson and Raven

Just kidding, but it makes as much sense as your X-Men rant...

I wouldn't sweat it on the whole place-names thing. People always mess them up.

My personal favourite local place-name is Avoch. Firstly, the "ch" doesn't make the standard sound when used in the context of "loch" and similar Scottish names. Secondly, it doesn't make a "ck" sound either, but this one isn't bad, I just chuckle when people pronounce "loch" "lock". But lastly, the place isn't pronounced "Av-och", since the a and v are silent. Even plenty of Scottish people cock tis up and it makes me giggle every time.

Just be glad none of your comics have taken place in Wales, though I would love you to find one simply so we could see you try to pronounce such place-names as Llanfairfechan and Ystradgynlais.

Lewis,

You're getting several of these stories in response to your #2, but I wanted to tell you how I honestly appreciate your serious handling of the situation. Your tone grew more serious and respectful, not a single joke was cracked, and to admit your limitations and sincerely apologize only raised my high respect for you.

Like many others, I and people I love suffer from various mental diseases. While I took no personal offense, I did find it odd that you did not have the same optimistic, uplifting personality you normally display to those needing hope. All the more reason, I think, that the comparison to how it was handled in All Star Superman would have helped, but that's water under the bridge.

I admire your vitality and love of life and, frankly, envy your enthusiasm and vivaciousness. Can't wait to see what 2013 has in store for us.

Hey Linkara, Seeing that you re-iterated here that you read EVERY comment I guess this is the most appropriate place to put this:

I recently went on a binge and read EVERY The Mask comic out there, and eventually I came to Joker/Mask... it was a bizarre piece to be honest, and the best thing about it is probably the premise (which is sadly wasted). The young and active art style makes room for some very revealing drawings of the female body (suitnipples, barely covered Poison Ivy) and continuity on both sides of the crossover is all but wrecked (from The Mask side it takes bits and pieces from the television, movie and comic continuities and slams them together). I'd really appreciate if you could take a look at it for the show.

TLDR: Is Joker/Mask on your to-do list?

I definitely agree with you on X-Men. I had hoped that Marvel NOW! would limit some of the X-Men series which had been growing out of hand prior to the reboot/re-whatever you call it. I think before AvX there were 8 ongoing X-Men titles not including spin-offs such as Wolverine and Deadpool (who also have both had way too many ongoing series). I think now there are still 8 ongoing series if you include the upcoming new volumes of Uncanny X-Men and Uncanny X-Force. Do we really need so much X-Men books? Are people really reading every single X-Men book? I'm barely following All-New X-Men just to see how badly Bendis can screw up two Scott Summers and I couldn't really care about the rest.

I actually rewatched Superman 701 review today after a discussion with my brother over which was the worse JMS story competing with One More Day. We both agree that JMS has this problem, perhaps due to editorial mandate, with utilizing elements present directly in front of him. He could have easily used the recent New Krypton events to explain the walkabout and Mary Jane being shot (which I believe was touched upon in a What If?) would have made a heck of a lot more sense.

My point with Superman 701 is that you apologized for any rude comments you may have made about depression in the review and you were right that it was never expressly stated that this woman was depressed. In fact, often those who are suicidal are seeking attention. Also, the execution, which was the source of most of your mocking was spot on. JMS just didn't tackle the issue very well. Though the page where Superman was just floating there next to the woman in complete silence well into the night, that did work.

Anyway, good list, Louis. It was a welcome return to your blog after having not watched for a month. (I've had hurricane issues.) Steer clear of tornadoes. You get those in Minnesota, right?

Careful with that bucket, Linkara Oo

This main premise about the X-Men being feared and persecuted because they "might replace the human race" is strange to me. Do people with vastly different powers and abilities even count as a singular species Oo ?
It certainly doesn't help that the X-Men unvierse is built entirely around the persecution premise. Xavier's struggle for peaceful co-existence is futile by design, because it is simply not allowed to happen.

And heck, some mutants even use technology and magic. They are indistinguishable from non-mutant super heroes.

It also doesn't help that X-Men editors seem particularly fond of massive retcons.

You know, I used to like you. I really did. Then you fucked with the X-Men. Seriously, you admit to not reading them, yet now you suddenly know their place in the Marvel Universe in that they don't have a place? Fuck you and fuck the Teen Titans; they should be even more of an absurdity to you, and at least the X-Men fan community will admit there's been good runs since Claremont left. Seriously, TT have sucked since Perez left, and they weren't that great before. Really, all you have is Judas Contract and the rest is mediocre writing with great Perez art. I'll take Claremont's 17 year run over any of the shit you read you hack with terrible comedic timing.

You know, I used to really care what you thought of me. Actually, that's a lie because you posted anonymously so I have absolutely no idea who the hell you are. I do know that you care far, FAR too much about what some guy on the internet has to say about your favorite book. I'm not allowed to have a dissenting opinion about the X-Men? Really? And even then, people seem to be taking my remarks waaaay too seriously. The whole thing was meant as a joke, which was what I had hoped had come across with the ending credits and the "Grand Unified Theory of X-Men Suckiness" basically being equivalent to that same false essay concerning every bad comic being linked to Countdown or Kamandi.

And even if I did honestly hate the X-Men with every fibre of my being - grow the hell up already you big baby.

Well Mr Linkara I looked though around 200 of the comments but if I missed it I am truly sorry.

But this is all I want to say anyway and it may help or may not with one issue and then something to think about in the future.

The Super Girl review, I would think the hologram knew Linkara was at the con, and being he did not want to watch the movie I would of said the same thing mostly meaning that the real Linkara could of went though the torture instead of the hologram. Just a thought...

Of course who knows @@ I think you did cover however he knew where Linkara was to some degree but stopped following him and stop communications.

But over all, I do still wonder how archie stays in biz, really I do.. They do have franchises from Sonic, to Megaman and even had the turtles for a while, and archie even meet glee cast (which i would think be a downgrade but..) So maybe they doing something right or maybe wrong who knows, I do remember buying at times the Archie Digest.

Anyway enough waste of ye old time :) keep up the works you make me happy every week except when you take off...

Pretty cool that you've been reading these.

I've been hit by depression too, and I did feel a little targeted during that episode, but I do realize that it's really hard to understand without a point of reference.

It's crazy hard to find words for it, especially when it doesn't even follow enough rhyme or reason to describe it myself. And I let it slide.

Thanks for apologizing though, keep making funny videos.

P. S. If you like plain hot dogs, try baking them if you haven't yet. Ehow and other sites are good for cooking times, and scoring them so they don't burst. It is quite savory, especially with better brands.

And I hope you forgive me for not reading all of the comments to make sure somebody else didn't say the same thing as me, but there's 241 so far, and I tried to skim them but I have things to do. ^^;

I know it's a little late and all but I really wanted to say this: for the issue of your Hologram self appearing in others' videos but acting as you normally would, why couldn't there have been a data interface that would link your Hologram self to your real self so that for defense purposes you still appear at home to your enemies. Sure, it wouldn't fool god-level enemies but a more common criminal that could be fought off with a dog would be fooled.

I must say I always watch your show and take ideas from bad comics that don't work and see if I can fine tune them to work. The whole thing with Judas Traveler, I'm still working on that. But do keep up the good work.

@10:06 Funny you should mention that. The reboot of the Fantastic Four film series has been announced to take place in the same universe as the X-Men films (Earth-10005). However, it won't be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Earth-199999), which includes the Avengers and Iron Man films. I just thought you should know about this little tidbit, seeing as you prefer the X-Men secluded to their own universe.

I apologize in advance if you have already heard this comment or something like it.

I am glad that you apologized about the depression comment from some earlier video that I have not seen yet, nor do I plan to.

I live with depression every day of my life. I have major depression, one that needs to be controlled with drugs not through life coping skills and counseling. I've done both and the counseling does not help all the time.

Being depressed means I feel powerless at times. It is not having control over outcomes and how I react to the world. It is a selfish felling that nothing I do is good enough. It is the feeling that no matter sincere others are in praising your work, they don't mean it.

When I go through a depression cycle, I have no idea what will set it off.

Sometimes, I feel fine. I can go about my day and not have to worry how I react. Then something triggers it and I sink like a stone into self pity and loathing.

Drepression screws your brain chemistry and tells you is important is not and vice versa. I have three college degrees that i have not put up on my wall because to me they are nothing than scraps of paper. It is a great accomplishment in my life an I could care less. That's not logical, you might think. Guess what? Depression is not logical. It forces you to think about things that do not matter.

As an example, my mom died in the hospital. Congestive heart failure and 6 years worth of heart attacks damages the heart beyond repair. Thinking about my mom's death does not make me sad and angry. What does that to me is knowing the last words my mom ever said to anybody was to me because I was there when the hospital put my mom into the coma she spent her last days in. I get to be the one that heard her last words, a "happy" moment I get to keep, causes me depression.

So yeah, if I were the person on the ledge in that Superman comic, it would not be because my mom died. It would be because she spoke to me last.

Remember this. Would you tell your friend Spoony to get over all of the events of his life? Even if he has gotten the help he needs, would you tell him to get over it? If you did, how receptive to it was he?

That's probably the question you should ask the next time you want to lecture a fictional character about getting over things.

Okay, this is gonna be about the X-Men... but don't go cross-eyed.

I'm posting it here because you talked about your review of #423 and 424, and that's what I'm gonna talk about. (I'd post there, but they're, like, soooo last decade.)

I've just uncovered new archaeological evidence on those.
I just got my hands on some of the 400s before them, and I noticed something - Kurt was wearing his backwards priest's collar all the time. It became part of his costume.
They went around the world and people recognised him as a priest.
They went to England to bring back a member (a member of Generation X, same team as Angelo, so we won't get into that), with him wearing it.

And we're supposed to believe that people who lived with him had never noticed? When they're doing things that have lasting repurcussions while everyone around is calling Kurt a priest?

Man, those issues just keep getting worse!

Frankly i tend not to leave comments on mistakes i see for two reasons

1: Everyone makes mistakes, and unless its a big one its usually better to just let it go.

and 2: Im often a couple months behind in episodes so its a fairly good assumption that someone has already mentioned the problem i see. I dont like adding to your frustration if i can help it.

...oh and as long as i have your attention, ive been wanting to say for a while. you do a GREAT Mark Hamill's Joker voice. Kudos.

overfiend_87 said...

Just as others have said, yes it does correct the spelling ot the UK version.

Also I absolutely LOVE exiles. I never got to the insect thing though and I stopped reading cause when I started looking for the next issue, all I found were collectors issues which had previous graphic novels, but in a huge graphic novel collection. So for now it's at the back-burner.

However I saw it more like Quantim Leap, which Stan Lee did mention at the start of one of them, which actually started with a line from the show, which was along the lines of. "Hopping place to place. Each time hoping that the next leap, will be the leap home." Although Quantum Leap is also time based, not universe based, so Sliders is a better fit. Really need to watch Sliders sometime, only saw a bit of it when younger.

Anyway that's all I have to say on it apart from that the small comic story at the end of Vol 5 with the warped version of spider-man written by chuch Austen left a bad taste in my mouth with Uncle Ben being an abusive parent.

I don't quite understand why you were so apologetic about the depression comments from the Superman #701 review. I felt it was clear in the video that your problem was with how the dialogue was written rather than the subject matter of depression itself. Maybe there were some lines that could of been phrased differently but I think it anyone was offended then that would be their problem.

I was just wondering if perhaps you were actually attacking people with depression to help your overall points about the comic. It wouldn't be a big deal if you were and it would make the serious apology make more sense. I just think it wasn't necessary when the show is mostly about making jokes about bad comics and I didn't see anything that was out of order in the review. I know its not the same but I'm from the UK and wasn't offended by any jokes directed at people from the UK or Europeans and if someone was offended, then that would be more to do with them then the show.

Also I really do enjoy the show despite this being my first comment.

In the X-Men part of the review, you mentioned you don't really follow the X-books. As someone who's been following them for a long time, the whole idea of the hypocrisy of Captain America or the Fantastic Four being given a pass on their powers has been addressed before - one of the big impetuses for the whole AvX crossover (quality of said crossover aside) is that Cyclops (and most of the X-Men, at least to start) don't really give a crap about what the Avengers thing, specifically BECAUSE they've always gotten a pass and never really done much to empathize or help out the mutants. Modern (and some classic) writers ARE aware of the inherent hypocrisy of the mutants in the Marvel-verse, and have addressed it.

Hello there. First time commenter, long time watcher. First and foremost, I would just like to say thank you. Thank you for the insane amount of entertainment you have given to me these past few years I've been watching your videos.

Anyway, I felt it a little ironic that this video was the one where I found out you read all the comments you received on your blog because, you had to approve them first. Here's why. For the past three months, I was busting my ass to get into better shape and get myself ready for an event called "Tough Mudder". I realized I needed something to do when I had the "opportunity" to work out every morning in preparation. Then, I realized I was behind on your videos for a good year or so. So, it was decided. I would watch one or two of your reviews every morning while I worked out and get myself into the best shape I'd ever been in.

Now, here's where the irony comes in... if I'm using that word correctly. This video was the last video of yours I had the pleasure of watching before the big day. That was two days ago on Friday that I watched this video and in this video, you stated the aforementioned. Now, even though the event has come and gone, I'm still dedicating myself to staying in good shape and I plan on continuing to watch your videos when I work out. Although I will obviously run out soon. Maybe I'll move onto Cinema Snob next...

In the end, I guess I just want to say thanks again for giving me laughter and joy while I sweated my ass off in my room. Ohh, and yes... I did finish Tough Mudder and I plan on doing it again next year. I enjoyed every second of it and it was a great experience. Once again, thank you, sir, for being awesome.

A lot of people here seem to like them rocket nipples. Well, I can think of at least one place you can see actual rocket nipples, if from a giant robot suit. I'm getting myself caught up on Powerpuff Girls, given the recent comic run, and the latter half of the ninth episode - "The Bare Facts" - has Mojo Jojo firing missiles from the chest of a robot he's in. It's only for a moment, but it happens.

I've read a lot of X-Men comics for years and as a kid loved the cartoon so I was kind of disappointed by your rant, it seemed pretty genuine and not just a joke that you wish that Marvel would stop making X-Men comics. As a comic reader I've never understood readers who wish that stuff that they don't read themselves would just be canceled, it seems kind of a dick thing to do.

You used many examples about how X-Men have ruined marvel comics but actually most of your examples had more to do with Avengers. House of M/Decimation was done to reduce the number of mutants but it was written by Bendis who was writer of Avengers at the time and Scarlet Witch has been an Avengers character for most of her "life" (about 40 years out of 50) so it was avengers related mostly. Same with AvX, it was a shit event but it ended up being the way it did because Marvel has had some weird obsession with making Avengers the center of MU (probably because movies are all Marvel thinks about these days) and so every big event for the last decade or so has spun off from avengers comics (starting with House of M) and when they had x-books building up to a big story they still had to put Avengers into it and so X-Men kind of became villains in their own event and AvX was born. Onslaught I give you but it's not really up to X-Men that Avengers and FF were put into hands of Liefeld, Marvel would have done it anyway and X-Men were likely just a means to an end.

And Civil War was indeed inspired by Mutant Registration act but it didn't in any way involve any of the X-Men or mutant characters that weren't part of Avengers. Hell that whole story idea was taken from X-Men comics and used on Avengers and X-Men were left completely out of it save for some one shot or something. And now Marvel has even taken the mutant persecution angle and transported it to Avengers comics with adding more x-characters into those books. (That is one of the reasons why I've mostly given up reading X-Men recently with other reason being the god awful characterization of all x-characters and the fact that they no longer do anything except fight with each other.)

Another thing that bothers me is your point about x-men comics being too complicated but I don't understand it because while I do agree that they are often very complicated, so are all comics. For example I've never been into DC books because I always found the fact that they are rebooting their universe every 10 years to be complicated. How can anyone tell which story stays canon and as part of the heroes backstories and which one doesn't? That to me sounds more like you just not caring about x-men comics and saying that they are somehow really complicated when it could apply to Teen Titans or Justice League just as much. I've watched your reviews about them and I remember being particularly confused by some of the things that you were explaining during your review of TT or JL, I can't remember which one it was but still, I was confused and didn't understand your explanations of their backstories because they sounded really complicated. And I read and understand X-Men just fine. So your claim that X-Men are somehow more confusing seems weird.

So what I'm saying is that you're being kind of an asshole for wishing that some comics that you yourself don't read should end because you don't care about them, same as if I said that I wish that DC as a company would stop publishing any comics because I don't read any of them and therefore they seem too confusing for me.

On two things I still agree with you:
1. X-Men shouldn't be in the same universe as other Marvel heroes (except for maybe Spidey and Hulk) because it doesn't make any sense in-story for people to hate mutants and love Avengers or FF (though treatment of minorities in real world is also sometimes illogical)
2. Exiles was great comic!

Dear Lewis,
You are my favorite reviewer on the site. From the intelligence and thought you put into your commentary to the kindness and respect you show both your fans and even, to some extent, your "enemies". (Trust me, there are probably worse things you can say about Miller and Quesada and Broadsky.)
I just wanted to say that I, too, suffer from depression. It's hard. A lot of things people wouldn't normally find difficult are trying for me. To top it off, I have anxiety issues and panic attacks. So sometimes just functioning in an intelligent conversation is hard for me.
However, I don't think you were intentionally insensitive in your Superman #701 review. I KNOW you would never do that. I wouldn't respect you if I did. And... I know you wouldn't have made any sort of comment like that if you knew what was going to happen on January 24, 2014. I know he was your friend. I felt like he was mine too. I still cry every once in a while because he, like you, was an inspiration to me and will continue to be so no matter what happens.
Continue to do what you do best: be passionate about comics. Don't worry about the fans. If they are true believers, they will understand your honest intentions. I did. Depression doesn't win on its own, but it doesn't surrender on its own either. It's the people who make us laugh and smile - like you do - that get me through it a lot of the time. Thank you.
