I had blocked this from my memory. I have no idea how you and Lupa watched this without grabbing your ears and screaming in agony, you are a better man then I sir.
Also when you and Lupa switch hats at the end your matched her outfit and looked so good on her that I think she could have worked as a Linkara from an alternate universe. Great review guys, though I'm not sure I'll ever be able to stand watching it again.

Directed By John Stewart? How could you not make a Joke about this?
OH God. And I thought the OTHER Mighty Morphin-era Christmas Special was bad. But Yeah, that has a plot and a semblance of Continuity.
Lupa complains about Alpha? Show Her Tensou. Now THAT is a useless helper Robot.

"Press the red button on the console, Alpha"

...But there's two identical red buttons side-by-side, Zordon.

These questions about how and why Alpha 8 or why the Command Center has these conundrum-creating (the decorating even though the kids were brought in to do so) or plot-convenient functions wouldn't have to be brought up if THERE WAS SOME FOCUS ON THE POWER RANGERS!

Shanethefilmmaker said...

Maybe Alpha snapped. He probably thought Kidnapping kids would be enough leverage to have the Rangers back. I love alpha as a character but now that I think about it he is the most evil person on the planet. Because if he wanted to he could have gone skynet and use the command center to take over the world. He has access to teleportation and high tech security monitors so he could kidnap and transport whomever the hell he wants. He could also mess up Zordon's tube. Best of all the center has access to the morphing grid and further weaponry. To top it off he subdued a Power Ranger without any help so even if the rangers morph they would be no match for him. It's a good thing he doesn't get disgruntled.

Shanethefilmmaker said...

That aside I kinda envy those kids. Sure they are being used as slave labor for alpha's deranged fantasy, but they are on the command center set. I'd sell my marriage to the devil......wait that's a stupid one. Um my soul? Nah it's gotten too lame. What else could I sell to get there?

Lupa and Linkara crossover? Awesome! Reviewing the horrible Alpha's Magical Christmas? Oh god. I am a huge power rangers fan but oh lord was this bad. Almost as bad this? Zeo christmas episode. Kidnapping kids? Pedo zordon and pedo alpha?

Sume Gai said...

That was an unexpected bit of awesome. You and Lupa worked well together and I'd love to see you tackle some of the, only marginally, less stupid Christmas specials.

Wait a minute...what about the Power Ranger's families?

I mean...that was nice of them helping Santa and all, but didn't any of them want to spend Christmas with their relatives?

Was that a issue for them or something?

Do they help Santa every year, if so, wouldn't the parents get a tad suspicious and hurt that their kids were skipping out spending the holidays with them every year. I mean, I am sure they got creative-wanting to keep their identities a secret and all-but there is so many ways you can say "Sorry mom, I can't be able to see you guys this year" with a phony excuse until they start questioning what is going on. And given that they're parents. They will pry.

A children kidnapping button-how else did Zordon get the original 5 together.

Alpha is the 7-Zark-7 of the 1990s.

ParagonRocky said...

For reference, Alpha kidnapping children is #7 on my Top 10 WTF Moments in Power Rangers list. My personal theory is that the kids are mind-controlled to be totally happy and compliant during all this, since Zordon and Alpha aren't publicly known like the Rangers are. It also keeps them awake and alert, since these kids were taken from all over the world at the same time, so at least half of them would have been asleep.

I also have to wonder why the kids were directly teleported to the Command Center, but had to leave through a misty doorway. I don't think they ever actually made it home. I think that doorway leads outside into the California desert, and the door locks behind them. Dozens of kids go missing all over the world, parents are distraught, and the authorities are baffled.

But Alpha 5 is a Jewish Robot, you can tell from his "ai yi yi!"
mantra.
Hallf the time in power rangers I almost expected him to do the Hora! :D

KaiKasparek said...

Well, that was a pile of dogshit. Lord Zedd's Halloween special or whatever the fuck it's called must by miles ahead of this shit.

Anyways, I'll address the elephant in the room, where's Marzgurl?

Anonymous said...

My question about the kidnapped children is how come they all speak English? they showed some were from France, so was there just a bunch of kids that were just really confused and just played along, so that the scary robot and floating head in a tube didn't kill them?

MichaelJGleason said...

Why were you so amazed about the kidnap children button. Teenagers are technically children and Zordon has kidnapped 6 of those on multiple occasions.

I love this running gag that Linkara/Lewis is delusional, about Pollo AND Santa.

Nick Noel said...

I remember having this as a kid and I only watched it to the finish because I didn't want to make my grandmother who bought for me sad that I didn't like her gift.

Ash Marie said...

I never saw this special as a kid and I'm damn glad I didn't. I felt my brain melting just watching it.

FugueforFrog said...

You should have ended with the command center blowing up again. I think that really was the most logic-defying holiday special ever, either due to the abducting of random kids to Tommy the Green/White/something Ranger. Honestly the only way this could have made sense is this was the "Return of the Green Ranger" Tommy who somehow was sent in his place while the real Tommy was at the peace conference making strange faces at Jason about how screwed he is (which he'll regret come Zeo). Seriously, I know a lot of Sentai have real downer arcs around Christmas but this was the only nightmare Christmas arc of anything related with PR/Sentai. I admire you two for surviving it.

Frosty said...

What, it's okay to kidnap kids at Christmas! Superman did it too!

"I love this running gag that Linkara/Lewis is delusional, about Pollo AND Santa."
And Harvey. :)

Wait... so who or what is Santa Christ then in Linkara's book? :)

Mitchell Martinez said...

Seriously, did Cheryl Saban write this in her sleep? This was terrible.

Among the MANY questions I have about this, probably the biggest one is that shouldn't those kids have been disappointed that they didn't get to meet the Power Rangers? Yeah, they liked all the stuff they did with Alpha way too much, but come on, they're kids, and if I was denied a chance to meet the Power Rangers, I would be screaming my head off.

Also, I find it ironic that the last song they did was Silent Night, since all I wanted was for them to SHUT UP.

Still, I must admit, the idea of a world where Jesus, Santa, and the Power Rangers all exist sounds like a freaking awesome universe :) So yeah, the special made me smile ONCE.

Merry Christmarch Linkara Brown!

Shanethefilmmaker said...

Personally I don't think Linkara was all delusional about their being a Santa. I too still believe he exists in spirit.

Kaze Koichi said...

1) "I'm Atop the 4th Wall Linkara, I don't asknowledge History of Power Rangers series."

Good one, Linkara! No, really, very good one.

2) I'm more surprised that Lupa doesn't believe in Santa. After all, Santa Christ is a part of TGWTG community. There are also wizards, aliens and 2D Lee. So, everything like this is okay, but Santa is no-no?

Well... I think I know why you left this one off the list outside of a brief mention when you covered MMPR on your... other... show. ahem.

lol nice review Linkara, but one question, why is Atop the 4th wall linkara reviewing one of the cheesiest episode in PR history if he doesn't Acknowledge that HOPR exists?

Holy Crap, and I thought the other christmas episodes were bad, but that was just painful! Linkara dig a hole and hide this horrible vhs from the world!

My guess is that AT4W Linkara, being as big a PR fan as he is (he has a morpher and has reviewed the comics), thought that a PR tape would be good crossover material. HOPR may not exist in his mind, but that's not going to stop him from looking at PR.

Oh, my.
This video. THIS VIDEO.

I own a copy of this. Even as a kid, I felt duped:
Saban, if the Power rangers are in less than 3 minutes of the special, DON"T PUT THE POWER RANGERS LOGO ON THE BOX!!!!! Ugh.
Ya know what you and Lupa didn't mention? Tommy's REALLY creepy-sounding singing of "We Wish you a Merry Christmas"--at least I think it's creepy. Lemme see if I can find it....
Yeah, I found it. Watch and cringe:

PS: If ya don't like video links, Lewis, feel free to remove the comment-- the link is a clip, NOT the full video) :)

Sabrblade said...

YES! THANK YOU for reviewing this. I watched it on DVD a while back and was appalled at how Alpha and Zordon kidnapped children, put them to work, and forced them to sing songs as though they were all hypnotized, all just to cure Alpha's mood swings.

Also, bit of trivia:

Years later, Saban would recycle the Jingle Bells song used in this special for the third "World Tour" episode of the Digimon Adventure 02 English dub, during the scene where Imperialdramon is taking the kids back home to Japan while a montage of clips of the international children celebrating Christmas plays over the scene. This was where the song "Tenshi no Inori" played in the Japanese version.

Unknown said...

Of course Zordon has a child abducting ray! Isn't that how the Rangers were initially summoned? Of course, looking at it from this vid's point of view, makes the whole "teenagers...with attitude" line seem reeeeally creepy!

Wait is christmas already?
Luckily my decorations are still up from last years.
Merry Christmas!

Ming said...

Wow, a XMas themed crossover with Obscurus Lupa! That's actually entertaining.

This XMas special is lame. I mean, if they're going to do a Power Rangers themed special, give us a fight between the Rangers and the bad guys during Christmas, not this lame plot where the kids are taken to the Command Center!

Doresh said...

Great, now the memories are coming back <_<

And boy, does this come across as creepy...

Oh, and does anyone else thing Santa would make an awesome Ranger mentor?

Max said...

Here's my question; if Alpha can EAT cookies... doesn't that mean he'd have a digestive system? Doesn't that mean Alpha has to poop eventually?

Unknown said...

The hell was that?

They made more of these?

Were these aired or just direct to video?

Though I will admit, the Rangers saving Santa from Lord Zed is oddly intriguing.

??? said...

1-Why is it that every Sentai that was adapted into a Power Rangers show has a Christmas episode, but only two actual Power Rangers shows, "Mighty Morphin" and "Samurai", have Christmas episodes? And the "Mighty Morphin" Christmas episode didn't even feature any footage from the "Dairanger" Christmas episode!

2-How can Alpha eat if he doesn't even have a mouth?

3-Isn't the fact that the Command Center is supposed to be secret a huge deal? What happened to "no one can enter the Command Center without a Power Coin"? Isn't that the whole reason the Power Rangers have secret identities to begin with? Or are Zordon and Alpha gonna go the "Tattoed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills" route and minwipe the children after they return to their homes?

4-Why doesn't Lupa, at any point, say "the reason the Power Rangers have to deliver the presents is because Phelous killed Santa Claus back in the 'Sonic Christmas Rush' review, and Santa Christ is busy making sure that the movie 'Son of the Mask' doesn't re-enter Earth anymore."?

5-Why are we even seeing this video? Shouldn't this have been posted in December? Next Sunday is Saint Patrick's Day, shouldn't Linkara and Lupa be reviewing something like "Leprechaun 4: In Space", "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" or that "Extreme Ghostbusters" episode with the leprechaun?

6-Why is Lupa so cheerful in this video? If this takes place at Christmas, then the aftereffects of The Incident should still be felt, and Lupa should have her Phelous-like "dull surprise combined with apathy combined with boredom combined with a cynical outlook on life" attitude, not her previous "super-ultra cheerful no matter what happens" attitude.

7-For that matter, JesuOtaku adopted Lupa's old ultra-cheerful attitude after Lupa adopted her cynical and apathetic Phelous-like attitude. If Lupa is back to her old self, what happened to JesuOtaku?

8-Why did Linkara invite Lupa instead of Marzgurl, even though Marzgurl is supposed to be his best friend and Lupa is just a passing acquantaince? Come to think of it, what WAS Marzgurl doing during Christmas? What happened to the review of "An All Dogs Christmas Carol" that she promised? Why did she wait until this month to post a new video?

9-Why wouldn't Phelous come with Lupa to Linkara's Christmas party, considering Lupa and Phelous are boyfriend and girlfriend and they always stand by each other?

10-If this is taking place during Christmas, how come there's no reference to Nostalgia Critic being fused with the Plot Hole (which was kind of a big thing back then), or why isn't Linkara worried about the possibility of the Gunslinger attacking him?

11-AND WHY AM I IN A STARFLEET UNIFORM?

Lewis Lovhaug said...

@??? - The only one of those questions I'm going to answer is that this was originally going to be filmed during the 4th Year Anniversary. The ending would have had us going around singing Christmas Carols to the other producers, who are naturally confused about why we're celebrating Christmas in the summer. That didn't end up happening, so the ending got changed and we filmed it last February at GatoCon, instead.

Also: it was Lupa who invited Linkara, not the other way around.

ScottSan1994 said...

???, first the reason is that not every show has a Christmas episode every season.

Also, it's Christmarch dude! Didn't you read the cal-end credits?

After watching the blooper reel, I kind of would like to see a Radu/Moarte teamup in the future. (Though I'm not one to be sad if it doesn't happen, so no pressure here.)

FallingHoshi said...

This is the only surviving Power Rangers movie I own, and I got it for like under a dollar at Blockbuster...Blockbuster doesn't exist where I live anymore.

Erik Draven-Lawson said...

Okay... I think I need therapy after sitting through that. I had pushed the bad memories of watching that into the back of my mind and you have to bring them back... thanks a lot! We have kidnapping, child labor, and blatant pedophilian overtones. Who knows what other illegal activities are going on in the middle of the desert? My real theory is that the actors who played Jason, Zack, and Trini got an advance copy of this, realized how bad it was, and decided to get the hell out of dodge before filming began! Anyway, I'm off to drown my sorrows in leftover egg nog!
*walks away mumbling, "Power Rangers Christmas... bah humbug!*

Erik Draven-Lawson said...

Hey, me again... just a suggestion that you really should fix the continuity alarm... at the beginning, when you said that you're "AT4W Linkara and you don't acknowledge HOTPR"... what about in the very first HOTPR, when you talked about Zack doing Hip-Hopkido and you said something about "on my show I have a Ninja-Style Dancer"... Does that count?

When I first saw the bloopers, I thought you were doing a French accent when you were saying "Damn it, Michelle". But I realized you were trying to mimicking Radu after seeing Lupa's show.

Oddly enough, I first thought Moarte's name was French. In retrospect, I sounded pretty stupid since he has an obvious Eastern Europe accent and the actual language is Romanian. Though French and Romanian are both Romance languages and my assumption that his name meant death was correct. Wow either I'm going with the Ask Moarte tumblr's continuity and assume that's just a stage name, or his parents had issues (to put it kindly)

But oh well, regardless of country, I still love it when you do European accents. Because Europe is sexy!

I really need to stop right here because I'm just rambling at this point

Anonymous said...

I think I agree with Joelle. I mean forget that battle with Moarte and Halloweenie (though I would put my money on Moarte(also let's hope it's not a rap battle)), how about

OVER-ACTING VS UNDER-ACTING!!!

with Moarte and Radu?

But I also wouldn't be too disappointed if it never happens> In fact, I'm beginning to notice that a lot of people have been conjuring up ideas for crossovers between some of That Guy with the Glasses' horror hosts. I think my idea of one is them watching a cheesy and/or bad horror movie ,but I do't want to get to fan-ficy here? Is fan-ficy even a word?

jay said...

Well um that was really bad, was this for 3 year old's? And this air before or after return of the green ranger, because at the end of part 3 Tom gave the powers back to Tommy which would explain this. Next I heard that the Austin st john, Thuy Trang and Walter Jones were getting the money that they wanted to see on the show so I guess they didn't want to lose money? Last did those kids now alpha before, from something from the year before all of this, were these the ranger's cousins and they told them, did alpha save there lives? I don't know.
