I think NIMUE (yes I spelled it right this time) is responsible for that little reset. I think it's messing with you! You might want to double check it!

By the by, that Shaft-looking dude looks more like Avery Brooks, which devoided us another awesome moment from those IBM ads. Also, it's because of the Cinema Snob Guyana: Cult of the Damned episode that I'm reminded more of "the greatest porno ever" than Kentucky Fried Movie.

Finally, you tell 'em Val Kilmer! You're the Christian Bale of the 90's!

Technically, for the Title Card having Snow on it, it can technically be considered Summer weather in the Southern Hemisphere, so at least having Snow makes sense for the Southern Hemisphere Viewers.

Trust Tandy Computer Whiz Kids to talk more on Drug/Substance Abuse than the Actual Computers that they’re suppose to be selling! It’s like watching an advert where we see a seductive woman eating a Chocolate Bar before having the sign “Support Our War Veterans” Pop up.

Speaking on J. Jonah Jameson, have you seen that recent episode of Pound Puppies where a Girls Father not only looks and acts like Mr. Jameson, but they also got J.K. Simmons from the Maguire Spiderman Films to voice him too?

Why doesn’t Miss Wilson allow the other students to talk? Maybe one of them went to Disneyland or maybe met a Celebrity during their Vacation. The Plant theory is getting more and more likely with each issue. Heck, there’s one child in a Wheelchair in the panel at 7:46, I want to hear their story!

You’re not the only one who thought Danny Chase when you saw that Red Haired Kid, I saw it too. Although the one Buzz was selling drugs too looked more like Nick Fury than Shaft to me.

Amusing to see Combine Harvester back as an Insane Montage…something tells me we’ll be hearing it again, next week.

Still, Good Review, Linkara!
Looking forward to seeing more from you. ;3

SO.... was the Time-Loop a throw-away joke or an hint at a bigger plot?

After all, we have things like the Babylonians who were the ones who invented the convention of time in seconds and minutes, and at least a future episode (Marville #5) will deal with Time Travel.

This said, a damn funny review and loved the reminder of the Countdown gag and PSA hell ^_^ Beautiful memories. Great job, Linkara

Does he have blue balls as well?

Hilarious review. Loved seeing the return of 'Combine Harvester' and PSA Hell.

If you look to the left side of the drug lab, you can see Dr. Nye from The Clones of Bruce Lee, complete with him playing with test tubes.

Thank you for providing such great entertainment over the years, your awesome.

YES! You cracked out the Wurzels again! The looks on the faces of the title card were hilarious and the review itself more so. I do have to ask how many of these comics there are. I remember one issue being handed out when I was in middle school. Something about gangs? Or civic pride? No idea. Keep it up. Onward to 300!!!

-Loved- this review; great 250th episode, Linkara!

Weirdly, my family is kind of just like theirs - one of my parents has red hair and the other one brown, while I have blonde and my sister's is black. Genes are weird.

This review was hilarious! I couldn't stop laughing when the Wurzels(sp?)song started playing. I do have one small nit-pick in an otherwise awesome review. You did another PCP/pop mistake int the beginning. When they were in the lab, you counted the "Must" as the second or third grammar mistake, but the comic really read "most". Still, awesome review, and may you have another 250 episodes!

Because poor reading skills,

I love this, especially considering that these comics were pretty fun to poke fun at. But while those were pretty annoying....this is the stuff of insanity. Also I called jinx on the writers never encountered children(and also forgot what it was like to be one),the fact that it was summer again(I caught that after the "first day back" line), the stupid idea of having children run a drug hotline, and the fact that Alec and Shanna are the most important children ever (but only smart when the plot requires them to be better than the adults)

Also I think there might be a conspiracy between Alec and this Allen charcter.....BY GOD!COULD THIS BE THAT ALLEN/ALECgjUbsJncDijOcyUVF7#LEWISHELP!GkxshkHkcGOGwdcv

Lostshadows said...

I'm guessing Alec and Shanna will never be appearing in, I Know What You Did Last Summer.

As for why the other kids aren't allowed to talk, its simple, extras with lines have to be paid more. :)

I can't figure out how using a zoom lens would actually help record that drug deal the head bad guy pulled. Unless he hasn't mastered the basic art of not waving illegal substances around in full view, the recording will just show two people exchanging something. The zoom lens is not going to pick up the conveniently incriminating dialog.

Btw, the panel in the video has "most" not "must", but it is a pretty odd looking "o." (Kind of looks like someone fixed a "u.")

Also, drug dealers do sometimes give out free samples to hook new customers. Once people are addicted, or just like the results, they're more likely to become a regular customer.

Well there's Christmas in July...but that's not a real holiday

What? No appearance from Beppo the invisible monkey after your latest mental breakdown, Linkara? Kinda feels like a lost opportunity.

Thankfully, the latest issue of Mar-ville won't be until next week. Hoping that Battlestar Galactica: Journey's End #1 will be better but I highly doubt it.

300th Episode: Coming May 5,2014! At least I counted 50 weeks from now , so I could be wrong

This episode was a lot of fun, like all the Children of the Damned episodes. It's stupid, but good fodder for jokes, and the Combine Harvester bit was hilarious! Great episode all around.

Last week I remember thinking to myself when you mentioned this comic: Yes, as grounded as dust in an anti-gravity field

I just realized something: Do they ever move onto the next grade? The 3 comics you mentioned opens with the first day back from summer, and they have the same teacher every time! Did they flunk everything that the TRS-80 doesn't mention in their electronic encyclopedia? And dear god, this comic sucks! In my opinion, this and Marville are the worst ones I've seen (just hope I survive Holy Terror when that episode comes).

When they say "Lunch Recess," it's not really an error or stupid. In general, there are three recesses in elementary school, and they're referred to as First, Lunch, and Last recesses respectively. Just sayin'

I also tweeted this, so my apologies for redundancy.

I argue that "clients misery for money" does not need an apostrophe. The company gives them misery for money. If there were an apostrophe, then the clients would be giving the drug dealers misery, and would be RECEIVING money. The apostrophe would imply that the misery belongs to the clients. If you wanted an apostrophe, then you'd instead say that the dealers trade the clients' money for misery.

First I want to say another awesome review linkara and here's to your 250th (cheers).

Second, your joke about the whole lab drug thing was funny and a bit true since you know meth labs. I know there are some that looks ghetto as hell but there are a few that do look like an actual lab (hence why it's call a meth lab). Insert your Breaking Bad joke somewhere around here:

"That must be a regional thing, because when I was in elementary school (TWO mind you in different states), we had ONE recess after lunch and that was it."

Yeah, same here. One recess, unless you had P.E., then you got to be outside twice a day. Of course, I liked recess better because it was not as structured as P.E.

Yes, believe it or not, there was a time when recess was all about simply running around and having fun. Oh, and burning your butts on the hot metal slides, jumping off the top of the jungle gym, making yourself dizzy on the merry-go-round, trying to achieve orbit on the swings, attempting to knock each other off the monkey bars...you know, fun stuff for kids!

...Good God, how did we survive... ;)

My God, Alec and Shanna are the biggest tools on the planet. I know people snark about the original Power Rangers doing the same kinds of things, but at least you can believe a high school senior working as a camp councilor more than a 12-year-old.

Also, if we hadn't actually met Alec and Shanna's parents, I'd have suggested that they were the teacher's children and her obsessive focus on them was just good, old-fashioned nepotism.

On an unrelated note, I didn't notice it originally, but in that panel you showed from Fit to Win there's a black boy sitting behind Alec whose eyes seem to be rolling back into his head. Maybe he's trying to summon the Elder God Nyarlathotep; won't he be surprised when what he gets is a silver-haired anime girl?

And you've gotta love how the drug-pushing kids' attempt to get new people hooked is what the Simpsons called the "super-liminal" approach ("Hey you! Start doing drugs!")

In the final issue, we find out that Alec and Shanna are living inside a Tandy computer powered virtual reality construct where it's always the first day back after summer break, class lasts five minutes, and they're insanely popular despite being colossal tools. It also explains why Duke Nukem showed up that one time, someone installed the game on the computer running the simulation.

Anonymous said...

Just a minor error, Linkara, but a popular tactic of drug dealers is to give away a hit or dosage for free to hook and addict a potential future buyer and have them coming back for more.

Anonymous said...

Okay I got out of the Church of Tabdy with my free will and everything. Though I do have a sudden urge to buy a new computer. Also my theory about Allen being Alec is probably wrong, it turns out Alec is now the church's leader and Shanna is now in psychiatric counseling after having been deprogrammed....

(OOC: Okay enough of my lame "cult kidnapping trilogy", point is Tandy Computer Whiz Kids is nuts. And yes, I did read your Twitter)

Shanethefilmmaker said...

The ads finally work again. Now that I think about it he does look like Chase.

Wow I never seen the reset button coming.

As for those idiot dealers, ya that's not how real ones act. In fact some of them act like regular normal people. I knew a couple in highschool and they never pressured anyone into doing stuff. Their policy is you either do it or don't. Of course depending on the drug they deal it varies. Weed dealers are the most normal, but crack dealers would probably be screwy.

Still I find it kinda funny how the dealers say that the Tandy's wouldn't believe them, when they once helped Superman.

Nice to see Combine Harvester again.

I think you can rule out Tommy looking like Danny Chase and actually being an undercover Danny Chase.

hehe boner.

Rhodoferax said...

The thing with the hair colours is actually plausible. The mum obviously has only recessive alleles, but the dad could be either BB or Bb. If he's Bb, then he might have passed the allele for fair hair on to Alec and for dark hair on to Shanna.

How could you review an entire comic about the evils of drugs without so much as a mention of Snowflame?

But yeah, this comic was stupid. I'd better go do some drugs to take my mind off it.

Rowdy C said...

Don't beat yourself up, Linkara. You're doing sequel reviews to all of the stuff we WANT to see!!

Anonymous said...

At first I thought this editor was just incompetent, then a far worse thought came to me. What if this man actually is a great editor, and this was the best he could do with the incompetent writers?

And we (yet again) see one of the major problems with these damn PSA's. Zero effort is put into actually figuring out what the conditions and environment are like, so it serves no purpose other than to dull the reader to sleep. It's like a war movie that gets all the tactics horribly wrong, only without the explosions and stirring music to convince the audience to forgive it and with a lot of terrible dialogue.

Minor note Linkara. You missed a grammar/spelling error, specifically "discription" shown at 22:43 (same page as the double riding skateboard).

Zanya said...

Ihr Engagement für die Sache der Grammatik Reich freut uns, herr Løvhaug!

And damn, you had a whole section about people in science in the drug trade and not one Breaking Bad shout-out?

Anonymous said...

I think it says "most often escape detection," not "must." It's sort of hard to tell, but it's either an O that got too narrow or a U with an extra line on top. The O would make more sense, so I'm going with that. The sentence still sounds a bit awkward though, so I guess it still counts toward the spelling/grammar errors.

Anonymous said...

I don't get it; how can a comic with such a banal setting and such a banal premise (yet another drug PSA) be THIS disconnected from reality? I wonder if you weren't on to something when you said that the comic creators never encountered a real child. Based on their impression that a skateboard can be ridden by two people at once, their choice of hair color for individual members of a family being chosen seemingly at random, their idea of how a school and its programs are run, and (of course) the children acting nothing like children or even human beings... given all that, I'm seriously concerned about whether the creators of this comic have spent enough time in the real world.

On another note, when that drug dealer said he was going to take care of Shanna and the hotline, I was kind of expecting something along the lines of a kidnapping or blackmail; you know, something more evil than just making up a lie that could have been easily debunked. Then again, given how quickly the drug ring fell apart and how easy it was for Alec and Shanna to obtain strong evidence against them, I think it was made clear that these were pretty lame drug dealers.

rdfox said...

I was going to mention Realistic being Radio Shack's house brand for consumer electronics (my dad still has, and still uses, his vintage '81 Realistic CB radio!), but someone else covered that.

Personally, I thought the Shaft-looking dude was Ultimate Nick Fury and/or Samuel L. Jackson.

Ironically, despite not giving us product numbers or anything, the comic DID still spend all its effort on drawing the Radio Shack products with all the tender loving detail that none of the characters had. I can identify that computer as a Tandy 1000SX, and while I don't remember the model number, I actually *have* exactly that camcorder stashed away in a box somewhere still.

Also, if memory serves, these comics came out every six months, with one issue in March and one in September, so that might explain why so many feature the kids talking about their summer vacations--half of them came out just as school was starting back up.

...so... you have a set of little balls and a set of big balls? Cue the AC/DC MP3!

Man, even the Tandy Whiz Kids comics just got worse over time, eh? Couldn't they have had at least a cameo by *actual* Archie characters? That would at least have been interesting.

Personally, I think you should've saved a more notorious comic for this episode (like the issue of ASBAR you did last time.) Still, that was the funniest character meltdown I've ever seen. Hilarious!

It's been a while since the last "Combine Harvester" bit, so this one was just hilarious to see.

And yeah, the kids are plants and they just reset them every time. I think somehow that they think that the Wiz Kids characters are like the Archie ones where kids grow out of it and another set take over, thus no need to get out of the stupid "summer vacation" mode and give these idiots, you know, real personalities and actions behind whatever they do. Shame Shanna dropped her pigtails though...but hey, I sort of thought the bullies reminded me of ones from Ben 10 more than Danny Chase myself.

Sort of wonder if that Deadpool mask will be used in the near future though...or if there should be an ultimate showdown of Alec and Shanna vs. Snowflame...

Great review! From what I can tell, the Whiz Kids come back from summer vacation in about half the comics. I've even seen one scan of a different comic that has the exact same establishing shot of the school as To Answer a Riddle, complete with the exact same dialogue from Ms. Wilson.

Unknown said...

That's odd... it's like someone used the Return to the Past machine from Code Lyoko.

Wow, this comic missed the mark with its drug related messages. Even some of the other crappy comics that were reviewed on the show (PSA or not)at least gave various reasons why drugs were bad (e.g. making you see people that aren't there, a zombified version of your child, etc.) But that still doesn't excuse the fact that it caused yet another mental breakdown for our beloved comic reviewer.

Thankfully, Linkara has the balls to handle such idiotically bad stories on a weekly basis.

Roach said...

Oh, good. I'm not the only one who saw that little red head at the back of the class and thought he looked like Danny Chase. Also, the one drug dealer/scientist with blond hair and glasses reminded me of Barry Allen.

Plot Twist! It will one day be revealed that the Tandy Wiz-Kid comics are actually some kind of alternate dimension/purgatory run by Alec and Shanna, for characters from other comics. And they have brainwashed them in to believing they are merely background characters in Alec and Shanna's lives, forcing them to relive alternate scenarios of the same first day back from summer break.

You know, your month of sequels make sense, there are lot of comic book sequel movies released in summer...okay its a stretch but I got nothing else.

Your Asthma medicine will only lead to some sort of Asthma monster, that is why you can't have it!

Maybe Shanna and Alec have hypnotic powers and have the teacher, class, and school board under their mind control, that would explain everything!

I'm kind of surprised there wasn't a “Space is bent and time is warped” clip...but the rant works too.

Okay again, weirdness on my end with the commercial break...in the time it took for the commercials to end, you could have literally have gone through the episode up to that point.

This is a drug/computer based comic Linkara...not a comic book based on safety and logic, that's why 2 people can ride a skateboard.

Hey the “Combine Harvester” music...that's the joke you haven't used for years!...I think. I was kind of expecting Linksano to be hit by a door for some reason. Also it really looked like you and Weedle were having some sort of Psychic battle....a Psychic Weedle, a PsyWeedle if you will...now where have I heard of that before?

Next great crossover event: Dragnet/Mr. T.

A great 250 down, hopefully an infinite number to go.

Good review and happy 250th episode.

Ha! Haven't seen a nervous breakdown Combine Harvester gag in a while! I have a feeling this will probably show up soon, probably during another Marville beatdown . . .

You know, for a Tandy Computer Whiz Kids comic, there aren't enough pages of kids promoting the products! They spend too much time saying "drugs are bad" but never showing why drugs are bad. And don't get me started on the grammar errors! Have they never heard of proofreading?

Seriously, why put kids in charge of a hotline for substance abuse? Maybe if we have college students, that would work out just fine, but preteens?

Off Topic: Lewis, what are your thoughts on Neil Gaiman returning to the 'Sandman' series? I'm excited as hell. :D

"Just say no"
Do you know about the anti-drug song "Just say no"? At least one of the kids singing it smoked weed in the White House during the tour! :S

Hey Lewis question...my dad (since the computer I have the collection of your videos on belongs to him) is being VERY Cautious about copywritten material (in this cause your reviews themselves and NOT the material ON them) so I have to ask, for most online reviews the copyrights are just as far as the ad revenue, that if anyone was to do what I've done, compile what you posted online for my own use, is NOT "Sue worthy" or anything correct? (sorry but my dad is VERY precise on how he wants things on his computer)

That is correct - you will not get sued because you have a copy of my reviews on your computer.

So, I wonder how many people reacted to the revelation that Alec and Shanna are siblings with "DAMMIT, I as shipping them!!"

KKDW - As anyone who has ever read Supernatural fan fiction will attest, being siblings is no impediment to shipping.

*shudder* So. Much. Wincest.

"being siblings is no impediment to shipping."

Well then, hopefully the sane shippers would have that reaction.

So, it's the middle of winter here, in July...
(But not snowing. It hardly ever snows in Canberra.)

I hate when the Alec and Shannah say 'we don't need drugs, we feel good about ourselves' in a PSA. That's great for this good-looking pair of popular kids with loving like-minded siblings with two apparently loving parents and the ability to heal from wheelchair dependency between panels... but a lot of kids turn to drugs because they DON'T have that, and DON'T feel good about themselves.

The kids look like they might've aged, and are maybe now in high school. Why the same teacher, though? Maybe she's Joo Dee?

I get the impression that pretty much everyone on this world is a literal plant - Pod People invaded this Earth and everyone is assimilated, and there are just a few stragglers left

Sadly the Whiz Kids are the only ones indoctrinated by Radio Shack to be easily impressed by their products:

So...how did those kids get INTO the bar for that meeting with "Buzz?"
