What did Linkara review at ConBravo? ‎

"Captain Planet, he's a hero, gonna take pollution down to zero!" And now everyone has that in their head. You're welcome. *Evil grin*

This comic seems very similar to the pilot episode of the show. Is it just the pilot, but in comic form?

Ma-ti would later move on to fight a technology-hating wizard, become a giant Plot Hole, and possess an internet reviewer living in Arizona.

And we now know the true origins of SNOWFLAME!

Yay, finally! I waited weeks for this! :D

Speaking of the “Matti Is Useless” Trope; How come in Suburban Knights, Linkara didn’t defend Matti at any point, considering he knows that Matti can actually be a very useful member?

Maybe that’s the reason he’s so fat? Since he’s only got four teeth, he isn’t able to chew his food properly, so he swallows big chunks as a result?

That Snowflame joke is an example of when Audience participation can be good, isn’t it?

Also, If the plane is covered in Oil, wouldn’t using Fire to open the door be an incredibly bad idea?

Nice Work, Linkara. ;3
Looking forward to seeing more from you. X3

Yes, Megan, this was an adaptation of the first episode. I actually thought the comics weren't as bad as the show. They weren't that great but compared to the episodes the eco-message wasn't as heavy handed (except for that shoot pollution into space thing Linkara already reviewed) and there was a subplot that I didn't bother following the issue to keep up on. Also, I think the eco-warnings made more sense.

Interesting that Captain Planet fights pollution, which is also his big weakness. Seems like a bad weakness when your enemies can toss it at you. At least Kryptonite is hard to come by.

You did realize, of course, that this was an adaptation of the show's first episode, right? I only ask because your summary at the end seemed to forget this fact when appraising the story aspect of the comic. Not a criticism or anything (like I was expecting a serious, in-depth analysis with a Captain Planet comic), it just seemed odd.

I'm pretty sure the Captain is stolen from Captain Atom, like the rest of Planet's design.

Good stuff, and the rest of the series is riffable if you want to. There's a homage to FF #1, and apparently a comic where Planet fights Fing Fang Foom.

Hey Linkara, did you by any chance edit out some idiot saying something stupid like "Pinkie Pie, is that you?". If so, thank you because I am an idiot. If not, well next time I'm going to sit a little further away from the camera next time just in case.

Maybe it's the lighting, but you look blue....OH MY GOD LINKARA'S THE MISSING MEMBER OF THE BLUE MAN GROUP!!!

@Shadowwing: Thanks, I thought the story sounded familiar!

Was there no Q&A section this time?

"Was there no Q&A section this time?"

Yup. The panel got cut short during the screening of Marville #5.

There a d20 session for this year?

The cover was pretty self-explanatory. It says "adapted from the hit television show" on the top. The filmstrip style was to imply this is the show turned into a comic. I suppose they could've re-framed the image into a large television screen instead...

IMO One audience member really took audience participation too far.

I'm sure you could find some issues of Alpha Flight to review next time...

(I love the series, but there are some issues that are definitely 4th Wall material.)

Wheeler did fire-bending before it was cool.

I do love the live shows. This one didn't seem as smooth as some of the more recent was but was still very fun.

Ah, Wheeler, re-enforcing the perception that all Americans can be huge jerks.

One of the things you suggest they do with the oil is 'reduce our dependence on foreign oil'.

Who's this 'we', white boy? This is an international team, deliberately chosen from multiple continents. Why would they care about 'our' (I take it you mean the United States') dependence on 'foreign' oil? What would 'foreign' even mean to a multinational team?

Awesome video.

I do want to say though that "instead of a Dark Lord you would have a Queen" bit was one of the reasons I still watch the Bakshi version of LOTR sometimes, in that she played it off jokingly in sing song voice rather than acting like she was possessed by some dark entity.

Anyway yeah it's a decent comic, silly but decent.

*pretty sure the Planteer's jet has solar panels on it*

Lewis Lovhaug, why are you not responding to the (Man of Steel) defenders points?

Don't you think the points are fair. it would be nice see if you agree or dsagree with them.

Please responding to the points made in the Comment?

I'm sorry if this post is annoying you. is just that you not answering.

Think you.

Fuel oil can refer to diesel as well as gasoline.

Anonymous: I'm pretty sure the Captain is stolen from Captain Atom, like the rest of Planet's design.

The problem there is that Captain Atom is ALSO a captain in the USAF.

Because I'm busy editing and writing videos and I really don't feel like dwelling on the film. I disagree with their points. That's enough as far as I'm concerned.

Also, I'd appreciate it if you kept comments for a specific video on the comments section FOR that video. I have to approve every message. I will see it wherever you post it and there's no need to go to the most recent blog post to get my attention.

You're conservative? I never would've guessed, given your siding with feminism and LGBT rights and so many other things that clash with what the right typically wants.

I know, right? I'm basically the worst conservative ever. XD

Conservative !=Only being right wing, anymore than Liberal !=Only being left wing, so I don't think you're a bad conservative, more one who understands neither side actually has an exclusive claim to either word.

There are many classes of Fuel Oil, but the most common usage of the term I'm familiar with is one used to heat homes, especially in rural areas. It's not something that is used as vehicle fuel, and definitely not synonymous with gasoline.

Great review Lewis!

As an adaptation of the pilot, this comic does a very good job. The character models are identical to the show; if anything, Greedly looks even better than he did on the show. All of the silliness in the plot comes straight from the pilot, which was pretty stupid.

I am surprised that you didn't throw in any "Suburban Knights" references! You didn't even sing the "Ma-Ti" song!

Peteman said...

@Anonymous

Because that Ma-Ti isn't Captain Planet's Ma-Ti, but rather a delusional Indian guy with a mysterious grudge against Ted Turner and an unrelated magic ring. That would explain why he thinks he's stuck at the age of 14 despite the show being roughly 20 years ago and his actor is in his 20s-30s.

Also, what constitutes pollution? As toxic as crude oil is, it comes into existence through natural processes. Captain Planet shrugged off lava in one episode and an erupting volcano is toxic as all hell.

*WARNING: OFF TOPIC ASIDE. FEEL FREE TO IGNORE*

I should also add that I'm glad that (speaking in general) comic fans seem to be getting a tad more reasonable about the nuances of political belief. I recall that back in 2003, when I reviewed Darwyn Cooke's "The New Frontier" and stated that in general I really liked it, but I disagreed with the depiction of -every- post WW2 American military action as being motivated by greed and corruption, the CBR board instantly slapped a "He loves George W. Bush and hates the comics of Darwyn Cooke!" badge on my head. Because only someone who loved George W. Bush and hated EVERYTHING Cooke drew could possibly find one element of that sacred and holy tome lacking. *sigh*

These days, in general, things seem to be a little less knee-jerk.

Ah, yes, the cheesy environmental show called Captain Planet, where the villains are all evil industralists and polluters and the teens are all annoying stereotypes, especially Wheeler. Some days, I wonder if they've consider reviving or remaking Captain Planet.

Great live review on the first Captain Planet comic. You should consider tracking down other Captain Planet comics and reviewing them.

It's a clever idea of the writers to have Gaia sleep for the last 100 years. Otherwise, she could easily save the world alone by simply calling the proper authorities.

you know what i love about these captain planet comics? that they do a much better job at telling the stories, and utilizing their powers...

which is strange, considering when you think about it, Warner Brothers, which owns DC, owns captain planet... but they let their rival company make the comics. and they did a HECK of a lot better job at it then the cartoon did.

and it is hilarious that this is scene by scene of the first episode of the series. only more rushed.

i used to watch this show every day when it was on as a kid, i still kind'a like it. if not just for how idiotic it is.

also, i do not think greedy is human, i think he's a pigman or something... and isn't there a bunch of rat guys in this too? LOL!

i think the biggest problem with this series, is the existence of captain planet. all it does is down play anything that the planeteers do. if they wanted to make a real hero story, they should of kept him out of it.that way it would of forced the teenagers, to do more heroic things. maybe even come up with a strategy. instead of just waiting for that moment at the end, where they call captain planet, from his captaining job in the navy... lol

heck, with captain planet, why did gaia, even need the planeteers in the first place? other then to splash water on him, occasionally?

captain planet doesn't even need to fly anywhere, he can just come out of the earth, and deal with what ever needs to be dealt with.

with that said... why is gaia even in this? captain planet appears to be able to save the world all by himself, just fine. lol

does gaia even have any powers? or is she just a ghost that just happened to have magic rings? and she just wanted to put a bunch of teenagers in danger, for no reason?

Barry Goldwater was a Conservative and he supported LGBT rights and civil rights. Well to extent. And he changed his views. Yes I find some of his views troublesome, among other things he wanted to use Nukes in Vietnam, but he was socially Liberal.

I like how, after Linkara specifically went out of his way to warn the audience against saving their stupid, unfunny comments for prosperity for all to be annoyed at....

...they just go right ahead, and shouted, stupid, unfunny, annoying comments saved for all posterity, ANYWAY.

Attention: people that go to live AT4W shows. You are not funny. And you are not part of the show. Please shut up.
