Nice job with the review. Is there any chance we'll get a new list to upcoming reviews?

Lewis Lovhaug said...

Yep, the list will come a few days after next week's episode.

Love the title card! :D

Good review as always Link, just have a few questions
1. Will you be shattering the walls of reality again any time soon?
2. What was the good comic you were reading when dressed up as the skeleton?

Great episode as usual Linkara. All the talk of Minnesota made me think of Weird Al's The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota. I was half expecting the end of that song (Just Al repeating "Minnesota" several times) as a celebration of the greatness that is the state that looks like a crushed soda can...that's how I remembered it when I was a kid....I am such a nerd!

Ductos said...

I had to stop the video when 60's kid appeared :D
Very funny one, Linkara.

Marcel said...

With your talk about Minnesota, do ya cheer for the Wild?

Anyways, great review, once again.

Azerth said...

I think you should get a Green Lantern Ring as a new weapon

Hey Linkara,

I spent the last days watching and reading myself through your archives (coming here after I fell in love due to the crossover vids over at Spoony's place) and just after I finally finished watching your old stuff you post this.

Perfect timing is all I say :)

I'm not sure which was the best part. Howard Cosell voice? 60's Kid? MST3K video? Ensign Monroe! Definately Ensign Monroe!

Go Minnesota, you're like Illinois' stepcousin twice-removed

Hey, it always could have been worse. You could have been re-reading US-1

Pffft!
The greatest player ever was "Fletch" Howerton!

Nice stuff, but why represent the '91 World Series and not the '87 World Series?

Love the Minnesoooota references too

Sferics said...

The episode was funny as usual.
I liked the Minnesota bit, but I'll admit I'm biased since I live in St. Paul.

Jer said...

It's always nice to see a little harvey finevoice from time to time.

A. Conroy said...

Good episode, Linkara.

I think Lee from Still Gaming would want to collect this comic.
Actually, no that would be bad....

Loved the MST3K references.

Who buys these things? I would imagine comic fans who have more than an interest in just superheroes.

As a hockey fan I'd buy a Stan Mikita comic. And I'm sure a Mike Ditka comic would do well in certain regions.

Paul S. said...

You need to bring 60s Kid back next time you review a Silver Age book.

Fun episode but well... lets face it there's a reason these types of comics never caught on.

Hilarious, Linkara. Especially the Star Trek "boooinggg" noise used as segues into the alternate realities.

I gotta say, though... why did the art seem to make the sweat on the player's heads look like they were dive bombed by pigeons with diarrhea?

Crazy56U said...

Three things.

1: You STILL haven't fixed the Continuity Alarm yet?!?! It's been 2 weeks! Yes, I KNOW it's a complex... thing, but YOU built it! It shouldn't take this long!

2: ...what's the Superboy-Prime refrence from; this is the second time I heard you make it and
I STILL don't get it.

3: A gag you could've used during the narration (in announcer voice):

"Yes, folks. It's a beautiful day for plot exposition."

rizzo said...

Wow, that was way better than it had any right to be based on the sheer lack of content in the comic. You were basically recapping a recap there, but you still managed to make it funny. Great Ensign Monrooooeeeee cameo too!

James said...

Okay, this was brilliant. Loved the Minnesota shout-outs (they were a hoot), and the reality-shifting. Plus, you do a great Howard Cossell. How long have you been working on your impressions?

Lewis Lovhaug said...

"2: ...what's the Superboy-Prime refrence from; this is the second time I heard you make it and
I STILL don't get it."

Infinite Crisis Secret Files #1 and Batman Annual #25 reveal that the reason why there have been so many continuity guffaws in the DC Universe, as well as why Jason Todd came back to life, is because Superboy-Prime was hitting an interdimensional wall with his fists that actually warped reality and made changes and inconsistencies in it.

Rhomega said...

This comic may have been boring, but at least this is memorable compared to other comics you've reviewed with forgettable plots and boring characters.

Reepicheep-chan said...

Superboy Prime punching reality is the most idiotic yet awesomely hilarious thing ever.

Aidan Kirk said...

At least random dead DC characters didn't come back to life when Mantle hit the walls of reality, eh?

Then again, maybe Batman'd be back by now if it had...hm....

Batzarro said...

Pretty funny!

MetFanMac said...

Too true, too true. Almost no athlete's life would make for good comic book material.

It's a good thing I didn't have any liquid in my mouth when '60s Kid appeared...

PS - It may interest you to know that the 1991 World Series is actually considered one of the greatest of all time even by serious baseball connoisseurs, due to the closeness of the scores and the on-field drama. Oh, and the Twins also won in '87.

PWBOT said...

Ensign Munro? With the zombie-ish Linkara appearing, does this mean that Ensign Munro is an alternate Linkara? Or maybe Linkara's descendant?

MFlorian said...

That skeleton Linkara was interesting. You aren't going to go all Black Lantern on us, are you?

Green's where all the cool kids are...at least that's what I'm going to tell myself.

日本文化のマニアック said...

Go Twins! Only 2 1/2 games behind! Yeah, my mom's a huge fan, I remember the 1991 World Series vividly.

As to whether or not Josh Gibson was a better hitter than babe Ruth, we may never know. The Negro Leagues (that's their official name) didn't keep records as stringently as the Major Leagues, so reports vary on the number of home runs he hit. And he was far from the only great Negro Leagues player. You can learn all about it watching Ken Burn's "Baseball."

Come to think of it, yeah, watch Ken Burn's "Baseball." it's a documentary, and it's a thousand times more entertaining and exciting than this comic was.

Great Review!

If you want to use more of Harvey Finevoice you should look into CSI tie-in comics.

Thicker than blood was pretty weak

Don't tell me 90's Kid is gone. I like 90's Kid, for some reason.

Not simply a review, but a fun show to watch.

Gracias.

"Or maybe Linkara's descendant?"

Heh, wonder who the lucky girl will be!

I'm in the same boat: I'm not much of a sports person, but if the story's engaging or the local team is involved I'll bite. Mark my words, Air Tusker: Chivas Regal WILL reclaim the Elephant Polo championship for Scotland!

As for Obama comics, there's only one for me:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1168213/Barack-Barbarian-takes-scantily-clad-nemesis-Sarah-Palin-new-comic-superhero-role.html

Knowing Obama collects Conan comics just makes it all the sweeter.

Nitz the Bloody said...

Thank you for another hilarious episode, Linkara.

And in all fairness to the Jason Todd retcon punch retcon; I thought it was cruelly clever that Superboy Prime originally intended to " set things right " by making it so Jason survived being a'sploded, but ended up making Jason come back to life buried alive a la Buffy Season Six.

Oh Superboy Prime, is everything you touch killed to death?

Truce Weston said...

This was awesomely funny! Ensign Monroe's cameo was beyond hilarious!! I loved it!

What an odd idea for a comic. If this was a silver age thing it would have made more sense, i guess, but still

So until Dazzler joins the Cheetah Girls, MAKE MINE LINKARA!

Mela said...

While I hope we'll still see 90s Kid, I second whoever said that 60s Kid should show up for particularly Silver Age-y stuff.

Josh Gibson's story sounds like it'd be sad yet compelling in more talented hands. But like you said, sports just don't make for compelling comics; a ball game just isn't as exciting when shown as stills on a page.

sorry ahead of time if this gets a little long winded, but I've been trying to get into comics lately and I'd appreciate getting your opinion

I don't know why but I want to avoid the ones as mainstream as batman and spider man for my first few ventures, I've been interested in doctor strange, silver surfer and the teen titans, I know I'm not likely to read one with there origin stories (I have a word of moth knowledge of the basics anyway) but I would at least like to start at the beginning of a story line, while looking for comics on the first two I found the essential series but there seem to be pretty mixed opinions about it.

so if you'd be willing to point me in the right direction for comics about these guys or other ones you think I might enjoy I'd appreciate it thanks.

Great episode, love the Ensign Munro cameo. By the way, like "ezim93" what was the "good comic" you were reading when dressed up as the skeleton around 8:00 minutes into the video?

Anonymous said...

lol switch coffee with Folder's crystals? me thinks its from a certain old funny-as-hell sketch from Saturday Night Live. Nice (if its not from that, forget I said it)

rofl at the "Gahhh, THAT FACE!" part

oh and to PWBOT: Ensign Munro is the character Linkara played in the "Lets Play Elite Force" Segment

Cryptix said...

Go Minnesota! =D Where many are cold, but few are frozen!

I tip my hat to you, good sir. You took what seems to be the dullest comic on the face of the planet and made it funny anyway. At least most of the other comics had something completely absurd to make fun of, this one's just... boring. I've had textbooks that were more engaging.

I love your reading voice for the narrator. For some reason it makes me think of Rocky and Bullwinkle, though I can't fathom why.

I'm curious to see if this Finevoice guy gets more explanation.

Ditko Gamer said...

Geez! Was that Lord Vyce at around 8:04?!

Are all of the problems that Linkara is now facing the result of Mickey Mantle's rage? Is Lord Vyce an alternate reality Linkara?

Did my prowling through old videos just uncover a huge part of the mystery?

I'm Peter Graves, and I have enjoyed this video.

Thank you.

Also I am going on an archive binge here but I couldn't help but ask.

Info question: how much is $3 in American standard? Over here it's a VERY big lunch for two cause of the exchange rates, so I'm asking does it have the same value over there? Cause if it does, it's a waste man...
