Pokémon: The Electric Tale of Pikachu #1

It's Linkara vs. the Entity! But what are the origins of this creature and what does it have to do with Pokémon?

NOTE: I've been working on this episode all day and it's STILL got bits that need to be redone, so check back in another day or two for an alteration here and there (including proper credits).

Blip also did the HD conversion for this episode, so let me know if it works for you!

Greatest. Episode. Ever.

PS Do you think that Lucario is like a Jedi... which is the reason it's my fav but nothing against Bulbasaur, it is #1 in the Pokedex.

"4-Why does Misty in the comic look nothing like the original cartoon?

5-Why are the police officers regular police officers instead of Officers Joy?

6-Why is May there? This is supposed to be taking place during the earlier seasons, so Ash isn't supposed to meet May yet!

7-Why is May the sister of Gary (and, presumably, Professor Oak's daughter)? That never happened in the cartoon!

8-Why does May in the comic look nothing like the original cartoon?

9-Why is Ash's trainer license his Pokedex?

11-Why isn't Professor Oak the one who gives Ash his Pikachu?

13-Finally, who was the brunette chick during the final montage? You know, the one who's about to review Witchblade? I know she's not Roses because Roses is a redhead with glasses, I know she's not Diamanda Hagan because she's doesn't have makeup on her face, and I know she's not JesuOtaku because's she not wigger enough (JesuOtaku's reaction would be more along the lines of "Damn, that mac daddy Linkara did it! He sent that white ass bitch the Entity packing all the way to the cosmic hood! He busted a metaphysical cap on that elder god's ass! That Linkara homie is top dog, yo!")."

4: Different artist, so of course things will look different.

5: Different universe. This is more "inspired" by the anime than "based" off of it.

6: This was released LONG before Advanced Generation was even thought of. They're two completely different characters, anyway.

7: For some reason, in this translation, they decided to call Gary's sister May instead of Daisy. I don't get it either, but again, they're two completely different characters.

8: Again, YEARS before Advanced Generation. Also, Daisy (Gary's sister, not Misty's) never appeared in the anime anyway.

9: Again, different universe.

11: Yet again, different universe. Also, you skipped 10.

13: Nostalgia Chick... I think. And I'm pretty sure JesuOtaku does not talk like that. Not to mention, there's nothing wigger about the Nostalgia Chick (or whoever it was) at all.

Honestly, most of these questions are just complaining about how they "changed everything"... without actually bothering to do research about it. Seriously, there's these things called Google and Wikipedia. Use them.

Well I for one loved the ending because it did seem exactly like something the Seventh Doctor would do. The scene where he talks the Dalek into killing itself was beautifully chilling, and I thought the same when we got the entity to kill itself too.

Sure I didn't get the reference to Planet of the Symbonites, but I still liked the way it ended. You had a well-thought out argument that proved to the creature that its goal would eventually become void and it would have no purpose. Honestly I found it a more interesting climax then just doing the plain old 'shoot the monster till it dies'.

Plus you channelled a bit of Kirk as well, since he was fond of talking this to death.

Though I can't say I was totally shocked by the entity being Missingno (which was awesome, cos I love the detail you put into making it seem believable), I still say that our world's version of missingno is slenderman. I even wrote a blog on it: thatguywiththeglasses.com/blogs/latest/entry/in-too-deep-is-slender-man-a-glitch-pokemon (yes I know it's shameless self promotion, so sue me).

However I still loved the episode, and the show. Here's to another 3 years of quality entertainment.

Optimus Prime is on the other line; he wants you to take care of Unicron for him.

But really, very nice conclusion, and excellent use of foreshadowing throughout the entire storyline. I think this video actually proves your point from last week about Venom and Carnage; there aren't as many truly bad ideas as there are truly bad executions of them.

The editing and the performance of the Entity made what could (should?) have been very silly into something very unsettling and creepy. Kudos all around!

(My favorite Pokemon is Haunter.)

Hey, one of the Pokemon manga! Actually looked at Pokemon Special/Adventures for a bit, it's not terrible. Pokemon Special is actually a quality series. Nothing that is revolutionary or phenomenal, but it's a good series.

You really can get into the ethical and screwed up stuff in the Pokemon universe VERY easily. It's better to not think about that. And the whole evolution thing is most likely just like metamorphosis.

Also love all the art inconsistencies. XD

That said, I knew there were a number of different manga series. I also knew that one of them was kind of infamous for...tons of fanservice. It makes more sense once you learn that the mangaka (author) mainly does hentai. ... Yep, that's all you need to say.

I'd just like to say to those who have commented on her cameo... I am responsible for JesuOtaku's upcoming review of Witchblade. I donated it. She seemed to like the idea a lot more when I brought it up than she did in her cameo, so I think she's playing it up a bit due to the series having a less-than-justified reputation amongst people who haven't seen it.

Of course, what anime reviewer ISN'T going to have reservations about reviewing a series that is so painfully fanservice heavy? I'd certainly be reading doing such a review just over concern about the responses I'd get regardless of my opinion.

FugueforFrog said...

I cant believe the measures I've been through just to write this review. I think the Entity took my internet this morning to prevent me from seeing this review.

Interesting that you went the Star Trek "logic" the monster to death, but of course...Outer God and all. I still sort of want to know how the heck 90s Kid ended up being taken since...you know, we never saw him go away. Though at least the clown returns...though it should be fun to see him and Harvey get along.

Regarding "Electric Tale of Pikachu"...that takes me back. I actually sort of knew of Pokemon since '97, both the game and anime; watched the dub from day 1 and even remember this very first issue of the comic/manga. (hell I even went to KFC and got the four beanbags...yeah, only time a Seel or a Zubat would get love from this franchise) I remember that compared to the more notable "Pokemon Adventures" comic that sort of just followed the game more (and is still ongoing), this just took a weird veering from the animated series with the whole mess of trying to make it more interesting. I sort of wish we had Gary's sister in the animated series (though we did get a busty girl named May...come 3rd Generation) and the comic started out alright...but sort of went in weird directions. (see the infamous "pregnant Jesse" ending) As for the usage of breaking your "no manga rule"...yeah, end of the world scenario so sometimes you have no choice. Can't wait for the Secret Origins fun to begin next time!

Just because the 1st MIB movie came out in the 90s and the line isn't too far out of character and it's true compaired to what he was planning on doing to you!
Or, you could've brought up the idea of going to another demintion and looking for like the Earth 2 from DC counterpart universe and find the universe busting bomb that was in both the DC Animated movie Chrisis on Two Earths and that episode of batman Brave & the Bold. I loved the episode, but I think you may have a problem. You have defeated a robot replica of yourself, and topped that beating a universal conquerer. Then you topped the universal conquerer by beating an Outer God. BUT HOW THE HELL CAN YOU POSSIBLY TOP THAT? What I'm saying is that you might have trouble finding your next villain.

Ok this has, probably been answered for you already, or you don't want the answer, but yes, when people die in the world of pokemon, they become pokemon, specifically Yamask. To make it worse, people who become Yamask also remember exactly who they were when they were alive. Oh and pokemon gets worse with things like that, from pokemon who steal souls to pokemon who kidnap children.

Also I'm third-ing the rec for Pokémon Adventures/Special because it is amazing. People throw around pokéball shuriken and use pokéball nunchaku, trainers fight on top of wild Onix over pools of acid, Agatha from the Elite Four makes voodoo dolls out of Jynx's ice... it's fun and creative and has interesting characters and intriguing plotlines to boot. I don't know if you're even interested in checking out another Pokémon manga, but if you are you should definitely give this a shot.

Eh, I usually just ignore the Pokedex entries when they say stuff like that. Plus, the Pokemon that kidnaps children, Drifloon, is incredibly light, so it can't actually succeed in doing that. Also, I'm pretty sure people only become Yamask in specific circumstances. I'm not sure what those circumstances are though.

To answer your question, Yanmask's line is stated to be the ghosts of humans that died tragicly. They carry masks that look like the face they had in life. Shuppet/Banenett is the spirit of discarded toys, and that still leaves other types of ghosts. The Pokemon world is actually extremely creepy.

I don't see how I could complain about the ending. It's pretty much the best one available for this sort of story. And on top of that, you did it very well. It'll be nice to see how the full version plays out.

Given my relative lateness in coming to this combined with the fact that I'm a bit too lazy to read through 200-plus comments in one sitting, I hope you can forgive a bit of speculation on my part. Is there some chance that you'll wind up "finding" new CA/TGWTG members who somehow just showed up after the Entity offed itself and restored the universe to normal? It seems like an interesting plot device to an outsider like me, but I don't know if it's a very practical way of doing cameos.

But anyway, that was a great arc with a very well done ending. I'm looking forward to more.

I have been watching your videos for months now and I like what you do. I have been concern that you didn’t update yesterday like you plan but I knew something must have been preventing it from the video to be uploaded so I waited. I was happy I was finally able to see what happens in the end. What you asked and argued to the entity, or Missing Number about for that matter (which I was surprise last video it was that glitch yet it seems that some people had figured it out by then), what so deep in a philosophical way. I’m amaze at how well you can tell a story. Also I am happy that everyone returned at the end. ^_^ Oh and I like the song you used for the credits. I'll go check out updated video later this week when is uploaded by then.

As for the glitch, I remember when I use, what I refer to as a cheat, to get a lot of rare candy so I can raise my pokemon’s levels. I didn’t, however, know the glitch can mess of the hall of fame. Also I read what the missingno looked like depended on the name you choice for the main character. The reason people saw the missingno as the glitch like thing because most people usually pick either Red or Ash (something about names starting with something but I forgot). In your case you must have chosen an entirely different name for Red to get the one that is shape like a kaobutop skeleton.

Now as for the review I think you overall did a good job handling a Japanese comic that was for someone who felt that they specialize in reviewing United American comics. With the way the review was going I was thinking you would going to say the comic sucked at the end, but when you summarize your review I can see why you didn’t do so. Most of what you complain about weren’t necessary problems with the story itself but just the world in the story. There were only two or three problems with this comic from a story telling point of view, such as important information relating to the story not being brought up sooner.

As for concerning ghost I never heard of pokemon becoming a gastly when they die. I do know they may end becoming ghost but not gaslty, in fact I don’t really think they end up as gaslty. Plus I don’t think humans would become gastly when they die either. But if you want to look into a case where people become ghost pokemon I recommend you look in to the case of the desumasu, or better known over here as the yamask. It’s been said those pokemon were once people of what is now a lost tribe/civilization.

As for the biology related stuff the comic mentions right around when it introduces the pokemon concept I have this to say.

1) Why would pokemon not be recorded in biological taxomamy?

2)Pokemon cannot be considered a single species. You already pointed one reason why but here is another reason. The word “species” is not a broad term. It is meant to refer to a single organism. For example the Northern Cardinals would be considered a species. It should be the same case with pokemon, like the pickachus by themselves would be consider a species. If anything they would most likely be a part of the same kingdom, which would make more sense.

Assuming that pokemon are the only creatures that inhabit that would instead of the creatures our world (which would most likely be the case unless it’s like the animated show where at times you do see animals from our would or at least a picture of one of them), you’ll think they would be given the same treatment as the animals in our world concerning the Biology discipline. Oh by the way since I am talking about Biology I would say you are right about the evolution aspect. I think they base pokemon evolution off of the actual evolution that takes place over time but change it to be a growing process for pokemon. In a way pokemon evolution could be base on both evolution and growing up. Just a thought!

SPOILER:

They oughta make a new TV trope out of this episode and call it "Did you just make Cthulhu shoot himself?"

Great episode, I haven't played Pokemon since I was a kid playing Yellow. Still although it was a great way to kill this villain I gotta say aside from taking the entire world population he didn't really do anything. Then again that is probably the point.

That aside, it was still a great way to end the arc.

However I wanted to ask something. It regards to how 90s kid was MissingNo in human disguise. Was it MissingNo that was playing the Other World 90s kid when he said that line "The problem is that it (magic gun) exists at all you sick freak." At first I thought it seemed out of character like most other world hallucinations but after the reveal it made me wonder how long he had been possessing him for.

Another thing that I kinda was disappointed with was when I watched grinning man and you revealed that the sect Whatley worshiped was not only worshipping Entity, but also responsible for the Magic Gun. I was kind of hoping she would give MissingNo a beat down. Makes sense since she killed the worshiper she might as well make their god suffer. Or at least last longer than Ninja style dancer did.

Regardless it was a great storyline and well I never thought MissingNo would outscare Mewtwo as the most intimidating Pokemon.

Doctor Irony said...

I don't usually comment, but I think this warrants it...
I really did enjoy this arc. Your acting has improved greatly since you started doing story arcs. It had more of an actual story feel throughout and because of it didn't feel like a guy just talking "funnies" into a camera

I feel the ending was well done, if clique. Though it felt to me with such a powerful being, it simply killing itself wouldn't be enough to "permanently" kill it. To me it just feels like it isn't actually dead yet and could come back at any time. (And I understand by saying the whole "its not dead yet" thing there's no way you can respond to my comment without creating controversy or just say "IT'S DEAD I MADE IT KILL ITSELF END OF STORY")

I thought for sure that you were going to have the Entity laugh off your question after thinking it over and then just absorb you. I thought for sure that, like in the game, the only way to get rid of Missingno is to leave it be and have it's way (like running away in the game) So basically you would be absorbed the entity would then kill it self

OR the idea i think you would like more since it incorporates the suicide idea and the glitches in the game: is that the Entity sees through the question out right mocks your attempt and waits for you to try to fight back. You give in and let it absorb you and then on continues on to absorb everything. Your question still on its mind become the glitch the Entity's new existence causing it after millenium of pondering the question, then trying your offer to see what would happen when it dies. After it dies everything returns that was absorb returns to the state it was before it was absorbed with slight glitchs, like the shirt changes on the different reviewers or maybe you could use it as an explanation for when Pollos changes. You could use the residual "glitches" as a basis for a BUNCH of things but I'd rather not list them here and spoil ALL the fun.

Basically the Entity does kill itself in the end but not from being tricked easily at the last second but over a long period of time due to YOUR GLITCH in IT'S reality so you become MissingNo.'s Entity. That and you can use the MissingNo residual glitches to set up for a buch of other stuff.

I don't know if you end up reading to this (or even commenting like i mentioned before) but i thought that this storyline was almost perfectly executed and i thought you would want to know. If you want to ask about my other ideas (i don't know why you would, but of you do) just tell me i love talking about this kind of stuff specially when I would love to see your storyline rise as high and succeed. (Wow I'm starting to make myself sound super important aren't I?)

But whatever I'm really starting to ramble just
wanted to give you my opinion JUST SAYING
Good Luck in the future, I can only expect it to be better!!!

Awesome review and epic ending!

Here's a (hopefully interesting and informative history) lesson, though I'm not sure how much of it pertains to Electric Tail:

Pokemon manga (all of them) have a weird niche in the manga-world. Most of them are published in monthly children's magazines (the magazines themselves being little more than game and toy advertisements) to show off the latest games, and then they get shafted to make room for the new games, so most of them don't have good pacing nor satisfactory endings. They get collected into volume format after a year or so, way after the hype is long gone. Official translators usually get the volumes to translate from since you can't really release one chapter a month here in America, and they don't see much value in getting the Pokemon manga after the hype is gone. Hence, why it's hard for any Pokemon manga to leave Japan.

There are some really good Pokemon manga out there despite this, and who knows, you might enjoy them.

Since you're playing White right now, there's the manga Pokemon Black and White being released by Viz right now, which despite being part of the Adventures universe, get be enjoyed as a stand-alone. It's being released in mini-volumes, cheap and quick to read, with its content being taken from the three different magazines it's currently serialized in. Nothing ground-breaking, but it's enjoyable and I love it.

BenYitzhak said...

That was fun.

Can we assume that, since the entity was capable of completing the its goal, that there are only a finite number of universes in your creation?

Or did it go beyond that and the Entity just simply forgot that the task was Quixotic?

I suppose that wouldn't have worked out as well.

What next?
-I'll move on to the next universe until I convert them all!
And after that?
-What after that? There will always be another universe. That's how infinity works. I'll be doing this forever, just because.

So, how many universes are there? (hopefully not 52)

Z said...

What a way to tie up a storyline.

Still, it feels... lacking, in some way. I mean, what will happen to Vyce now that his goal has been completed? He's stranded out god-knows-where, with no way of returning home.

Perhaps, when you're feeling more, I dunno, more in the mood for storylines and whatnot, you could wrap things up from the Vyce and Entity arcs.

Mainly, dealing with Vyce now that you've pretty much gotten rid of the thing he was trying his damndest to protect god knows how many universes from.

... I REALLY hope that the guy whose name that escapes me at the moment commenting about "Paying a visit to Cinnabar" isn't gonna make us go through this whole damn mess again.

Of course, I think I'm probably being paranoid and currently on Troper overdrive, and I recently rewatched that one review of yours about those Gameboy comics.

So... Yeah.

Lord You Know Who said...

"Significantly better than the Vyce letdown. Well done."

To be fair, the true letdown of the Vyce story arc happened in the Halloween special, and then the arc continued for one more month until it ended. The Entity arc finished on Halloween, so it's shorter and to the point ("Cry for Justice" was the perfect moment to put the Vyce arc out of its misery).

Second, the Vyce arc failed because it tried to shoe-horn in Vyce to the usual "Silent Hill attacks Linkara" gag from the previous Halloween special. It made no sense for a lower being such as Vyce to gain control of something like Silent Hill, a galactic overlord doesn't mesh well with an eldritch town that messes with your mind, and trying to cram arc-related material into what in the previous year was a standalone gag was uncalled for to begin with. On the other hand, an eldritch abomination such as the Entity meshes better with the paranormal horrors of Silent Hill, and Linkara did a better job of mixing the two together.

Third, the real letdown of that arc was taking what was until that point a silly, goofy and cartoonish aspect of the show (the magic gun) and giving it a "darker and edgier" explanation for it. Stuff like Burton the Robot, Phelous dying and coming back to life, Nostalgia Critic being able to shoot down his guardian angel with his gun or 80s Dan doesn't need a "dark" explanation, and neither did the magic gun. The Entity arc, to the best of my knowledge, didn't "darkify" an humurous aspect of the show (and the 90s Kid thing doesn't count, since the Entity merely assumed 90s Kid shape, so the real 90s Kid is still humourous and goofy), so it's not really the same thing.

I don't get why some people are complaining about the ending not making sense. I thought it was pretty straightforward and a nice change from always beating your villains with big guns and power rangers morphers. So I say well done on making a good story with an interesting conclusion.

June said...

"From what I've read in the Cthulu mythos, Outer Gods are the most powerful of that order... and subsequently the most indifferent to other creatures."

Pardon for not being terribly familiar with Lovecraft beyond knowing that's where the creature Chuthulu comes from. (And a few other comments have mentioned this was reminiscent of one of the Doctor incarnations and I've never been able to watch much of the show either.) But you explanation here does still give strength to the argument that it really shouldn't have been bothered that much by your question. If it was so indifferent to people then it should have been perfectly content continuing to absorb the universe until it was the only thing. Being indifferent towards creatures it has no need for worshipers so the Whatley cult would not have been spared being absorbed eventually too. I was thinking the end would have been something like The Matrix and you let yourself get absorbed to destroy it from the inside. I kind of like Dr. Irony's suggestion in that he suggested a similar approach.

But I don't want to sound like I'm complaining. Because I'm not. I guess I saw the argument as too "human" an approach. You reach "nirvana" or "heaven" and then what? Well, an eternity of being content with reaching "nirvana" or "heaven." To achiever your ultimate purpose/goal is to achieve your ultimate purpose/goal. There is nothing after that. And that's not a bad thing. It only seems like an upsetting thing to our minds here and now because as long as we continue to live we want purpose and to think of an eternity of no "and then what?" seems boring and meaningless. But if the Entity's ultimate goal was to be existence then it would not need a purpose after that and it would not be bored because there is nothing else for it to want to do. And as existence what other "meaning" would it need? So I guess it's that the way you talked it into killing itself made it seem too "human" to me. But maybe, that's the point. It may have thought itself a "god" and was very powerful but it was still ultimately fallible, ultimately... mortal, and not a god.

Wow, I think I just argued myself out of my argument. I know the show must go on and I do think you did a great job of ending this arc, my complaints aside. It really was a nice change of pace as far as how to defeat the enemy. YOU are the one telling the story after all. I can like it or lump it. The way your portrayed the Entity was genuinely creepy. I have no worries about your next arc being just as creative and exciting.

Oh Linkara, Bravo Bravo, BRAVI-SIMO! This is why i love your show, your reviews and why i got started into comic book collecting.

Now onto Pokemon. Looking back on it, i'm not the biggest fan of it, in fact the only reason i collected the trading cards was because everyone else in my school was collecting them at the time, and i figured, "why not."

Yeah that time, my situation was a lot like Kyle's from the south park episode, "Chinpokomon," though not entirely.

Though i do admit, i don't know what pokemon games you played. I only played the pokemon arcade, or pinball game

Anyway, Dude, I was literally clapping over the end credits, that is how awesome this was, and i look forward to the next storyline of atop the fourth wall.

Though there are just two things i want to know:
1. You never replyed to my comment back in Doctor who classics #7 on your thoughts on Christopher ecclestons portrayel of the Doctor
2. What were the pokemon games where you can unlock missingno. nothing personal, i just never played the games.

Commented earlier. Still enjoy it, but now I have one question that I'm not sure was entirely answered: did Missingno kidnap and then shapeshift into 90s Kid, or did it possess 90s Kid? TV tropes was making it sound like both, and neither this nor the last review really said which it was. If you can, I'd like an answer.

(Crap,in my first comment I wrote Vice.My bad).Linkara,I wanted to say again that the way you defeated the entity was epic. The slow sad version of your theme was a effective touch. It was your last stand after all. The eyes that the entity had and the way it talked and move was creepy. I found the entity to be from Uncanny Valley that way. Hurray!Everyone minus Polo is back!.I hope Nimue doesn't turn out to be the next Big Bad. That would suck. Also where's Polo?. Is he on the ship?.Is he a disembody voice at the moment?.Oh,cool the pokemom comic didn't suck.As someone who knows about Manga a bit the whole spanking the butt at someone is a immature way to say "Kiss my ass". I could be wrong though. Thank You Linkara for the incredible ending to the Entity Saga and for doing all that hard work you put into the review video.:).The Multi verse is saved thanks to Linkara.Yay!!

Saw this and thought you were going to do a Pokemon Special review, was sad to see otherwise, but oh well, still entertaining.

Still, as I see at least one other poster has mentioned, you should certainly give that series a red. Based on the games and with an actual coherent plot.

June, that's because of the Entity's mindset. It wanted to become existence because it felt as though its existence as it was was meaningless, being the result of a programming quirk and nothing more. It wanted to be known for the "beauty" that it was. It wanted to mean something. It just... took it waaaay too far.

But there would be nobody to aknowledge it after it became existence. It would just be eternally lonely, with no one left to revere or fear it. Plus the universe is so vast that it never even thought about what it would do if it ever finished its journey, which I might add it seemed to enjoy quite a bit. Linkara forced it to really think about its end goal and realize how dissatisfying it would be, and then convinced it to explore a new possibility instead.

Short version is, Missingno may not have been human but its motivation certainly was. And really, would you or anyone else here be satisfied with being the universe, and entirely alone to boot?

boooratt said...

Well, others have brought up this same basic idea for an alternate ending, but here's my version of this ending.
You allow the Entity to absorb you into it and it turns out it doesn't efect anything you enter into a world where everything is exsacly same as the normal world. You know it turns out that It jsut wanted to be reality not effect it. So, basically it's incontrole of everything but it's off too buissy consuming other realities and doesn't actually effect the world at all. So, basically everything returns to the old Status quo. It'd be one of those ironic endings where fighting the Entity was completely pointless.
You know what I mean, Vern!?

"The Entity arc, to the best of my knowledge, didn't "darkify" an humurous aspect of the show (and the 90s Kid thing doesn't count, since the Entity merely assumed 90s Kid shape, so the real 90s Kid is still humourous and goofy), so it's not really the same thing."

Anyone who believes that, please tell me the exact episode where Missingno replaced 90s Kid. Feel free to watch his cameos before and after KISS to help make this decision. Keep in mind some theorize Missingno may have been here since 1997.

Have fun. And please tell me - all his appearances post-KISS have become VERY creepy and most are identical to his known behavior.

This was kind of a dumb comic, but it was fun and kind of funny, which works well enough for it. I wish you had at least briefly touched on the fact there were some other Pokemon comics; personally, I think the Pokemon Adventures (or Pokemon Special) manga was the best, though this one was fun also.

I was almost thinking of kind of a Matrix Revolutions style ending, where the Entity absorbs you, but you did something to yourself to destabilize it from the inside. That would have been a pretty wicked effect waiting to happen.

Regardless, well played all the way around, and I look forward to your next story arc and seeing why this ending had to happen on Halloween.

NO SUEDE YOU FOOL

Alright, that was a pretty good and acceptable thing for something as conceptually silly as making MissingNo. (which, oddly, I've never questioned my pronunciation of it as "miss-IHG-no" throughout my life) an Outer God... although I kinda have to question how a mortal could trick an Outer God like that... from Lovecraft they're either so unaware they're seemingly non-sentient or they're big dickbags who can't be tricked like Nyarlathotep. Well, I guess since it was a silly glitch from a video game, you could sorta paradox-explode it robot-style.

I noticed the comment about the wifi and I wonder if you have an AT&T 2Wire router, cause you have to manually allow the DS to connect to it by fiddling with settings. If so, I could post how to fix it so it'll connect, and if not, oh well!

See you on Friday at 4pm!

Epic finale ! I love how you really went for the lavishly ludicrous aspect yet still made the Entity terrifying at the same time. At the end, it's nothing but a silly nerd-reference glitch in a video game, but when that glitch exists in real life, it's freaking horrifying and believably so. I was a bit surprised you didn't make any Anti-Monitor references there, but I guess for comic book fans, it was sorta implied :)

Whew. After this really creepy arc, I hope your next arc is something lighthearted and whacky and fun. I mean, don't get me wrong, you did BRILLIANTLY -- you scared me far more than most horror movies have -- but if you're still paralleling superhero comics, now I hope for something that moves away from Crisis On Infinite Earths and goes back to Star Trek sci-fi shenanigans or something goofy and Silver Age-y like Linksano's schemes. Anyhow, once again, GREAT job!

(So hyped for Secret Origins Month btw!)

The reason a conversation wouldn't work with your more typical outer gods is because they don't really have personalities/intelligence in that way.

They are too insane to think anymore or have become beyond good and evil etc....that they simply are, they act but don't think. They simply "do".

MissingNo. hadn't gotten to that point yet so those questions still meant something to it and due to its computer like nature it ultimately had tendencies toward logic which needed to be fulfilled.

As for releashing Vyce, the guy when faced with a threat that was multiversal in nature, came just a hair's breathe away from killing it. There's other outer gods out there/other menaces, whose to say he wouldn't find something else to justify his actions? Or decide to bring order to the universe ala Dr. Doom?

Another thing... the more I think about it, the more I realize just how Doctor Who-esque your argument with MissingNo was. Even though I haven't seen as many of his episodes as I might like, I could honestly imagine Sylvester McCoy giving that speech. Kudos on that.

"It's not really that he talked him out of the whole thing, but rather he exposed MissingNo.'s completely, utterly meaningless existence for what it was - essentially he showed him the existential horror of what it is to be this great being... whose goal doesn't amount to anything in the end. Or, to put it in simpler terms: he made it emo."

Really? Huh, and here I thought it was after showing him that the path leads to some ultimate punishment of seclusion and boredom a path to something unknown.

At the same time, I thought that maybe it would do it because it thought it was unknown.

But, if MissingNo. is truly as it claims to be an "Elder God", you're not going to be rid of him as long as you remember him. Elder Gods only disappear when they are forgotten.

Okay, as someone who primarily comes here for the comic reviews, I have to say the review here was... lacking. I get that you aren't big on Manga (me either) and I understand that the Pokemon review was to tie into the Entity/Missingno storyline, so it all makes sense form that perspective. It's just that the comic itself was strictly mediocre. There was very little to criticize and very little to praise, so the review portion seemed weak.

That said, holy Hades! The entity storyline was generally fantastic and I loved that it ended with a very Kirk-esque logic bomb rather than being an escalation of the morphers/guns/sonic screwdrivers etc. stuff.

I do hope this means we get a break with a good chunk of straight storyline-free reviews for a while, but some of your tweets about cybermats and thigs make me doubt that.

All in all, Lewis, please keep up the good work.

Looking forward to secret origins month as it's cool to see how some iconic heroes got their start.

And now, random question time. Based on your brief "That's All I'm Saying" bits, it seems you think the best comic writer working today s Gail Simone. Is that a fair assessment? I'm more of a Scott Snyder fan myself...

Also what about Lord Vyce will he ever make a come back I mean you could tell him the good news that you killed the Entity(For now) that destroyed his universe so are you going to let him go or what's going down I just want to know

Wow! This episode is incredible. Not only you've turned a Pokemon glitch into a terrifying Lovecraft-type evil entity, but you actually defeated it the Kirk way -- talking the monster to death! This is one of the best episodes of the year! For this, you get the badass seal of approval!

I remember watching this show as a kid. Played the video games since I was a kid, still have them with me. Also watched the show, too, but I stopped watching the anime right around it moved to Cartoon Network. I wish they let Ash Ketchum actually win the Pokemon championship or have a real showdown with Giovanni during this series . . .

Anyway, this comic is actually quite good. Of course, I prefer Pokemon Adventures. It's the closest to the actual games. Have you read Pokemon Adventures?

So, any hints to the next major storyline?

shikome kido mi said...

That's up there with last year's silent Hill/Magic Gun storyline as your best story resolution ever. That year you showed how to do a better Silent Hill-style psychological horror than their comics. This year you showed how to do a better Lovecraftian work.

Of course, unlike most Lovecraft stories, you won, but having a continuing show rather necessitated that. However, the manner in which you won was most appropriate. You'd already built the entity up s something that was too powerful (and too rooted in the horror genre) for a direct battle to feel right. After all, this thing scared Lord Vyce and you only beat him through cleverness and a convenient Achilles Heel.

"So basically, to defeat an Eldrich Abomination, a Outer God, the Entity.... you have to criticise it?
Critics: The most powerful warriors of man."

Depends on the Eldritch Abomination. MissingNo is a man-made Eldritch Abomination and is thus capable of defeat since it was designed by man. I don't get why people are having a hard time believing that Linkara could beat MissingNo with a logic problem.
Concept Eldritch Abominations (Death, Chaos, Order, etc.) are a whole different beast altogether. How can you defeat Outer Gods based on concepts? Like the Wyrm, Weaver, and Wyld from Werewolf: the Apocalypse? Sure, you may be able to defeat an avatar or pawn of theirs, but they will always be there in the background. And actually defeating them always ends up bad for us too if it can be possibly done. More often the case, you really didn't beat it and it will come back again.

Sorry, really going to have to disagree with you on Yugioh GX *Is fan*. Have you seen the Dark World Arc in season three or the untranslated season four that never came over here?
While Judai/Jaden isn't a super smart character from the start of the show, after all he is represented by the Fool Tarot card (Normal AND Reversed by the way), he's not that dumb.

When the series starts getting really dark by season three's Dark World arc: He stops being childish because of the really bad consequences that happen from it. How would you react if your childish antics and reckless behavior caused the death of your friends?
It always gets to me when a few of the other characters are yelling at him to do something after that happens by clearly ignoring obvious signs of DEPRESSION! And yet they are surprised when he mentally snaps...

Zexal isn't even finished yet as a whole, so nobody knows if Yumma goes through a severe arc that completely changes his outlook on things from then on or not. I just hope there are some Eldritch Abominations again like we had in GX (Light? Darkness? Awesome!). Earthbound Gods in 5D's? Meh... Really just Dark Earthly Gods than actual Eldritch Abominations. And don't get me started on 5D's boring time travel/future nonsense at the end.

Well, it's necessary to have a supercomputer like Nimue say it, since if she said the reason why was "unknown," then it could lead, from a storytelling possibility, that the forcefield would be used to defeat the Entity. ^^

I know, a roundabout way of showing it, but I tried to also convey that, from Linkara's point of view, when he was asking Nimue the question, he was truly horrified, that he came to the same conclusion on his own, but wanted to be told he was wrong.

I honestly don't mean any offense when I say this. You're forgetting that this is not a simple manga copying everything from the original anime. As Linkara noted, it does have it's divergences. Among them are the following:

4. Different art design.

5. Because the writer wanted to make more officers. Besides, it isn't that strange. You do see regular officers in the Pokemon anime (even though they're usually less than useless).

6. That's a completely different May. This was released fourteen years ago and came over to America twelve years ago. At the time I don't think the character May from the anime had even been designed yet. It's not as though the writers for the anime were passing notes on future events to an American translator for a manga.

7. In the games Gary (or rather your Rival) does have a sister and there's no reason not to introduce her here. Also Pokemon is an anime. People might think I'm quibbling but artistically and thematically there is a very large difference (and an even greater one prior to the anime craze of the early 2000s).

8. See point six for details. Short version, they aren't the same.

9. Why not? It's a fairly handy way of proving your identity.

11 (I think you might have meant 10 or accidentally removed your tenth question). To tell the story it's not a requirement that Oak be the one to give Ash his Pokemon. In the games he just happens to do so to get a useful assistant and in the show there are many ways of starting out.

I'm not saying that your questions are bad, you just need to remember the RL factors.

8-Why does May in the comic look nothing like the original cartoon?"

Are you thinking of the girl character from the Ruby/Sapphire games and that part of the show. They're different people

Also come to think about it, I think you totally should've talked about how odds are that even putting The Entity in a Pokeball wouldn't be the best of ideas. Given how it messed up some data in teh game who knows what effect such a thing would have done in Linkara's normal life.

One thing that did pop in my mind while reading the comments is..kinda a scary thought but sense In Life Missing No all it did was consume universes, planets and life forms it makes you wonder if it could escape Death with his power ala Kratos but to a far more greater level..

Also the more I think about it ,couldn't Lord Vyce be an alternate Linkara as well? Sure he is a "Dictator" but he was trying to save universes from this thing.

I might be over thinking things buuuuuut its a pretty powerful episode especially when one asks a God such as The Entity why even do what its doing.

One of my favourite parts was how, when you were selecting your comic to read, you reverted to the original style of your reviews. A great throw-back, especially since it links in so nicely with the plot - there's nobody else out there, so go back to doing your videos the way you did when there wasn't anyone else in them.

It was the 1st issue in The Thing From Another World mini-series... as in John Carpenter's THE THING! It was a 2 part mini-series that acted as a sequal to the movie. Outside of being very forgetful (I can only recall that it features McReady and him blowing up a sub that The Thing had got aboard) the artwork in it was a LOT like the art in those Silent Hill and 30 Days of Night comics which is really difficalt to understand!
But, the 2nd mini-series which was 4-6 issues long and featured McReady fighting the Thing on a military base in a jungle was a 1,000,000,000 times better!
I'd love to see Linkara review it someday!
Oh, and the reason for "Too ironic?" was it featured the whole paranoia and absorbing people plotline!

How am I supposed to study when I jump every time I hear that noise? If I fail a test, I'm blaming you. ;)

Well I'll say this much Linkara: At least you didn't say we should have an MMORPG of Pokemon. I get so sick of people requesting for that then I already know how it's going to turn out: people forcing you to battle them by blocking caves or passage ways you need to go by or other such dickish moves WoW players resort to. And it's not like Nintendo's a company that can actually manage to admin and moderate a server like that either. They've got other franchises to work on.

And as for a proper fighting game, I think there's one made with the MUGEN engine out there somewhere.

"6-Why is May there? This is supposed to be taking place during the earlier seasons, so Ash isn't supposed to meet May yet!"

May didn't even exist until Ruby and Sapphire were made. This was created back in the dark ages when we only had Red and Blue. They probably thought Gary's sister needed a name and just picked something randomly. Last I checked, her name in the games is Daisy.

Hey Linkara if you like Pokemon then you should check out Pokemon adventures, its based more on the games then the show and its really good

Yeah, but now that I think about it, I don't think Daisy was named at all until Gold and Silver, hence why she has a completely different name in this manga, but in the Japanese and English versions.

So anyway, I have a question, Linkara: Have you ever considered reviewing the "Spawn" movie in a crossover with the Nostalgia Critic?

Lamest Supervillain Ever!

I know this is a low budget production and of course there is severe limitations but there is no excuse for bad writing and this final showdown was anti-climatic, sorry Lewis but let's be honest: this stands far far away from the best script you can delivery for us someday in the future.

I hope the J.J. Abrams' reboot for the Linkara series does better than the original despite the fact classics can't be remade ever with bad ending season's episodes.

This was definitely your own Star Trek TOS Season 3 all wrapped and one single episode young man and even Spock's Brain alone did better than this.

Please learn more with Russel T. Davis' Doctor Who series and get yourself in shape for next season, in the hat we thrust and on him who stand under it even more - BUT DON'T PLAY DOCTOR KEVORKIAN EVER AGAIN, that was bellow yourself Mister.

Still now that I think about it. Getting a god like character such as the entity to commit suicide is pretty hardcore. Lovcraftian himself would drop his Jaw over it. Still who would be a worse villain on the evilmeter than Missing? You have the Anarchist (Insano) The Destroyer (Mechakara) The Dictator (Vyce) and the Virus (Missing.)

Personally my money is on Boffo. It's not an evil clown thing....not an evil clown thing at all.

So... I'm a little confused. Exactly how long had 90's Kid been missing, and how long had Missingno been impersonating him? Since the Star Trek Elite Force comic review?

For that matter, was Missingo impersonating 90's Kid, or possessing him? Because NSD's snarky card at the end suggests that 90's Kid was being possessed, but everything else in these past two videos suggest otherwise, and arrgh I'm really confused.

It is a great idea, to talk your way out of a crisis like that.

Maybe, that should be tried in real world more often - just TALK about things. Not get your gun and kill your enemy, but talk about it. Try to make him see, that his logic is flawed.

Unfortunately, things like that only work in the fictional world, where you have to be either the seventh, ninth, tenth or eleventh doctor, some archeologist named Daniel Jackson or a guy named James T. Kirk - at least in the old show.

ALthough I liked the sentence of Kirk in Star Trek 2009, where some guy asked him "Hey, Farmboy, do you know how to count? We are five, and you are one." And he: "Well, get five more, then we are even". ^^

Talking his enemy to senses is something, that should be tried moreoften, in my humble oppinion.

by the way: It is good, that the
90's kid didn't do a "Gary Mitchell". ^^

As far as I remember: The producers of the show mostly wiritten out both Misty and Gary near the end of Johto: Ash finally beat Gary, and because of that, Gary shifted his focus to wanting to be a Pokemon professor like his father and the two became friends. Meanwhile, Misty became a Gym Leader, a position her game counterpart had since the beginning of the series. She even gets a mention in Black/White when a Swimmer asked what regions had water-type gyms, as she is GL of one such gym, Cerulean in Kanto.

So far, the "day or two" has been two weeks. And I put off watching it this entire time, just so I could see the "completed version." Only to give in during a bout with insomnia.

Good episode, just wish I had known it would take this long for you to release the updated version. x_x

I am really sorry about that - the effect is taking longer to produce since it's twenty seconds long and I need to do it frame by frame. I thought it'd be relatively easy to put together, but unfortunately that hasn't been the case. ^^;

I'm surprised no one's made this joke yet, but... how many postcards did YOU have to send to get that official Pokemon League hat? XD

What is the music that plays when you and Liz are reunited at the end?

Linkara, I do not quite understand. The Magic Gun was clearly fashioned by the worshippers of Whatley and-supposedly-Slient Hill, in order to prevent attacks against the Missing Number, but it is not your most powerful weapon. It is simply your most tactically-convenient weapon since it requires no power and-since bonded with you-it can attack in multiple forms.

You had other attacking options, and more powerful ones at your disposal. I may be nitpicking over a storyline of fantasy, but I like to analyze, so people in the response thinking I'm going to far, work with me on this and understand that I like to analyze these conflicts in narrative and situations much like this one. Its awesome.

I can see the BFG and other technologically-based energy weapons being ineffective. Being a glitch itself, it could only be diminished by those means-as Lord Vyse has shown through implied combat with the creature, a being who only used technology-and never diminished completely. That only leaves magic as a power source capable of destroying him.

If I'm not mistaken, The Zeo Crystal is magic. The Zeo Power Staff and Zeomorpher are still viable weapons in your arsenal, and also your strongest ones. The ability to transform-which I assume provides the ability to strike harder, strike with magic and take more attacks much like your normal Ranger-is powerful enough in its own right. The Power Staff directs concentrated magic into an opponent. Neither of these weapons and effects were tampered with by the efforts of Whatley or Missing Number.

Hell, I'm not sure how good your sword skills are, but if Iron Liz does actually hold Twinkle and Icing Death, those are incredibly-potent weapons in the realm of magic. Why wouldn't those effects have been viable as a magical solution?

Its not that I'm displeased with the means that you won; manipulating the creature through logic and reasoning is quite perfect and shows that a direct assault isn't always the best option. And I loved the review of the comic.

I just wanted to understand, since I don't quite get why those things weren't viable options for you in the story.

Because, Aurabolt, it's far beyond just striking down an enemy with one blow or shooting it or the like.

Consider the phrase "a piece of the world is missing." As indicated, this is referring to MissingNo., but think about it a bit more - LITERALLY the world is now part of MissingNo. The posssessed 90s Kid is simply a visual reference for Linkara to talk to. Shooting it with any weapon may diminish or delete part of it, but it's still too huge and all encompassing for any weapon Linkara had available to him.

Basically, it's like trying to take on a volcano with just a sword or a pistol. Oh sure, you might do A LITTLE damage, but MissingNo.'s been toying with Linkara this entire time. The only reason it didn't just gobble him up whole is because his efforts and his terror amuse it. Even if he did morph and attack, it'd likely just suddenly rush up from the ground beneath him and swallow him whole, either crushing him dead or absorbing him as efficiently as it had done everyone else.

More or less, it's just too big for him.

Aurabolt said...

Ah, I see now. I was confused by the physical representation of the Entity, and thought that its physical form was a focal point for some form of consciousness that could be destroyed if attacked in the proper manner. I knew Linkara had stronger weapons, but I simply didn't realize the encompassing nature of your opponent as well as I should have.

Thanks for that, and keep up the good work as a reviewer and a storyteller.

I love the review and how you managed to slot it into the story. At first it felt a tad clunky with the whole 'The world is ending and so I shall do a review' thing but it was a nice subversion of the usual sob story to camera and the final speech was brilliant.

I consider seven my favourite Doctor, eleven not far behind and your speech was a perfect talking the monster to death moment, made all the more brilliant by how in- character it seemed. You essentially killed the monster by reviewing it. Amazingly awesome.

It's also given me an idea for my writing because I have this army of aliens and originally I was going to have the hero just info dump how unstoppable they are but now I think I might just have someone ask the questions you did, only for the aliens to answer that they'll still go ahead with the plan to destroy the multiverse.
