Star Trek #2

Behold this classic tale of the starship Enterprise... and how her crew is incredibly incompetent.

I know there are a few people who say they dislike storylines in your reviews. But I really really enjoy them, especially how over the top and goofy they are.

4th edition D&D best game ever LOL.. clearly Mirror Universe Liz LOL!

When exactly were these comics out? Around the same time the show first aired? So probably before the vast amount of canon had been set in stone right?

Pretty much, yeah.

Urm… you trusted a robot, a machine, to reprogram another machine to not take over the world… I see nothing wrong with this. In other news your beard is both very convincing and I did not recognise your title sequence from two of the only good episodes of Enterprise.

Good, as a certain debris orientated reviewer might agree, being relative.

Putting that to one side, I can see why you're going with the whole mirror universe thing. This comic was so out of context with the classic show that it almost give me whiplash. Rockets, Transporters, That and it made it a good running joke.

As for the science, I'm glad I had that whiskey earlier. It is possible that the internal pressures of a molten core might, if the crust was thin enough, cause an explosion that would shatter (or Shatner, as I miss spelt it originally) the surface, think of it as a balloon being over inflated. Pop.

Of course there would still be a planet, just a with a surface of rapidly cooling molten rock and a lot of asteroids and dust in orbit. at a hight quite bait more safe than 15,000 feet. Most aircraft fly higher! Then again we tend to forget in the years before wiki scant research meant no research.

Again putting that to one side this was just wrong. This might have been something that the "Hey your that Captain Solo guy from that Babylon 5…" crowd would have written. Not a bad comic, per-say but to hard core trek fans that would buy it just wrong enough to rub us the wrong way.

Good review and another nice break from the norm.

Thomas

PS loved that Arthurian reference. lets see if anyone else gets it!!

My theories: all your usual side characters are played by Spoony (since Insano, and not Linksano, is played by you), '90s Kid is a fan of lighter, goofier comics, Ninja Style Dancer is a Pirate Style Singer, Harvey is a communist spy, Mechakara defected to the humans and wanted to use the magic gun to drive back the robots, and the AI that is so obviously going to turn evil from the ion storm is actually good.

Oh, and I have some ideas for the Pollo redesign. You should make it a contest.

Lizard-Man said...

Sweet, Mirror Universe episode!

So in this universe does Mirror Linkara actually like Countdown? Or does he use it as a torture tool?

I'd imagine he also considers Act of God as some work of high end deep philosophical story or something.

Oh, and all the Power Rangers toys he has are actually Beetleborgs toys. Or maybe TMNT, considering that the rival show of PR.

Jigglysaint said...

You know, with the way evil Linkara looked, I actually thought you were making fun of the Game Overthinker and his story arch with the Anti-Thinker. Alternate universes are so much fun, aren't they?

Anonymous said...

"Nimue"? Lewis, I think your love of Arthurian lore is showing again. ;)

Crazy56U said...

Yeah... it was about time that a Star Trek comic review brought about the "ion storm" problem...

Michael said...

I would not worry too much about the AI. If it does turn evil Linkara could probably just do his Kirk impression at it until it decided to commit suicide.

To those that missed the reference please watch the following episodes of Star Trek:

What Are Little Girls Made of?
The Return of the Archons
The Changeling
I Mudd
The Ultimate Computer
Requiem for Methusela

Okay, so in the opening credits, Mirror Linkara defeats Lord V, and has hi own Comicron. But Lord V is himself a dimensional traveler. So, either a) Mirror Linkara defeated some other guy who happened to have the same armor, or b) there are actually multiple Lord V's running around the multiverse, at varying power levels.

(Of course, my original guess last year was that Lord V *was* an alternate-reality Linkara under the helmet, although it doesn't seem like that's the case, now.)

There were also clips of Mechakara getting his arse handed to him, but that's not necessarily as hard to explain, since Mechakara's had to rebuild himself after his first defeat. He probably thought the Mirrorverse Comicron would be easy pickings, but in his hubris, underestimated Mirror Linkara's willingness to use lethal force. Having been humiliated, Mechakara came back to our reality to lick his wounds, and followed under Lord V, figuring he could double-cross him and take the Comicron anyway.

I have a question: Did you play the mirror universe Insano? Because I could tell that it wasn't Spoony, but I wasn't sure if it was you or not.

Also, here's one theory: In the mirror universe, Joe Quesada used his executive powers to PREVENT One More Day from being written by J. Michael Straczynki, (did I spell his name right?) who wanted to get rid of Peter and Mary Jane's marriage somehow.

Also, in the mirror universe, the Nostalgia Chick created That Girl with the Bowtie.com, and the Nostalgia Critic came later.

Film Brain actually LIKES the movies made by Asylum.

I'll probably come up with more later. Wait, I got one more: in the mirror universe, Final Fantasy VIII is Spoony's favorite game in the series.

Peace1986 said...

Loved the whole mirror universe where everyone acts Shatner.
Also, the antogonizer and Liz saying that it kinda feels nice???
That is just feeding the fanfic crowd :( (they scare me).

And why does everyone hate 4th? I got into 3.5 but play 4th nowadays, the most important thing in a dnd session is making the DM go insane because you just completely ruined his hours of story planning :D

I agree with Seth. A "Redesign Pollo" contest would be fun, even if you probably already have the prop being made.

Great silly episode. I kind of wish there were more storyline fillers like this; there's a plot, but it's only sort-of connected to the main storyline of the season.

Oh, and sweet Mirror!Insano (Mirsano?) goggles. I don't think I've seen any like those before. Where'd you get them?

Anonymous said...

theory chester a bum is a multi billionare who reviews movies from the 80s and 90s calling them all terrible and the critic does recent ones

SynjoDeonecros said...

This episode, Mechakara, Linksano... you're coming up with a lot of alternate, evil versions of yourself, aren't you? (Yes, I know Mechakara is an evil version of Pollo, but considering his origins I'm counting him as an alternate evil Linkara, as well). I shudder to think what kind of inspiration you'd gain from Archie Sonic's Anti-Mobius storylines (especially the one with Anti-Antoine marrying Bunnie. Just imagine you and Iron Liz reenacting that makes me shudder).

I vote for Mirror!Linkara actually being 90's Kid, considering the Liefeld worshiping.

Damn I love these mirror universe jokes. And having Servo in there just made me choke with laughter. Ah you have too much fun with this sir. Too much.

That said, wearing those grey jumpsuits actually makes sense from an exploration point of view. Never liked the idea of going on an away mission with those pyjamas. But hey what do I know, never written and episode of Trek...

Personally, I though that maybe 90s Kid of that universe would be more like the Linkara as the Mirror Linkara was showing some signs of liking the same things the 90s Kid of our Universe. Only except the 90s Kid of that Universe would still have some of his mannerisms such as saying "DUDE!" but still act reasonable like Linkara, which would be kind of weird.

I like the idea of Doctor Insano (the White?) being the savior at the end of the episode though, mostly because it came out of nowhere. Well, maybe not entirely out of nowhere as with all of the multiverses available, there has to be some Sane Insano running around...that's still called Insano...o_O

Hmm. Would Mirror-Harvey actually be a hair metal band frontman?

Mirror-Angry Joe would be unflinchingly negative in his reviews, but an absolute pacifist and gun control advocate/zen philosopher.

...whoa, here's a thought. If Mirror-Linkara is so ready to kill Mirror-Liz, might he *really* be sleeping with Mirror-MarzGurl? (Though actually, as a mirror version... he'd probably be as big a player as Kirk was, so he'd be banging all the girls on TGWTG...)

My mirror universe theories:

Since footage of the fight with Vyce is there, my guess is Vyce fought Mirror Linkara to a stalemate and decided to put conquering his universe on hold so he could fight and defeat you in hopes you share a weakness so he'd have an easier fight with Mirror Linkara.
Since Mirror Linkara likes Liefeld, then that must mean Mirror 90s Kid likes the stuff you like which would therefore mean that was the universe where Countdown didn't suck which you wondered about when reviewing that series. Should have asked alternate Liz about that, lol

Awesome review, though I can't help but think - you should totally hold a contest for a design of the new Pollo body. That could be cool. Unless you have a design or a planned change for him.

A.J. Taiyou said...

What ever you do Linkara, stop Pollo from getting a new body. Seriously Liz even said it, Pollo was the same in the mirrorverse, that means he's probably the same in every multiverse. He's going to become Mechakara if you give him an upgrade, just you wait

Could be worse. I have annuals with reprinted Gold Key stories, one of which is where the Enterprise finds floating-space-coffin of space-Gandhi-Einstein. Nobel prize in Astrophysics and Peace campaigner. And medical science has advanced enough they can repair the damage of the early form of cryogenics used to freeze him and bring him back to life!

But not to notice that his BRAIN has been REPLACED by a ROBOT brain! By ALIENS!

While he was floating along in space the Aliens found him and swapped brains so he would be their creature and campaign for peace with his mind control rays. Violence is wrong, man, like so wrong that people all over Earth form torch wielding mobs to violently smash the planetary defence installations. Leaving Earth defenceless… apart from Starfleet, and any defence installations on the Moon, and anything on Mars…

But Captain Kirk and the other people who recovered the coffin were immune as they got zapped by the immunity thing the Aliens built into the coffin rather than keeping separate. So on live TV Kirk destroys the space-Gandi-Einstein-thing’s electronic brain with a big disc used for erasing magnetic tapes! And the torch wielding mobs all go “huh, we nearly smashed the planetary defence installations” and shrug and go home.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this: this was not only a take off on the mirror universe, but also followed the general formula of a Star Trek episode, down to the three main characters having witty banter before the end credits :)

"PS loved that Arthurian reference. lets see if anyone else gets it!!"

I did. And nobody with that name has EVER caused trouble for a magic user before. >;D

On another note, Two interrelated scientific points: They have apparently found fossilized life inside meteorites (http://journalofcosmology.com/Life100.html) And mucus that was left on the moon since the moon landing (apparently someone sneezed or coughed on something prior to using it up there) was decades later grown in a petri dish. I'm not sure where that paper is, sorry.

Combine these pieces of admittedly pretty controversial information, and zombie kudzu on another world (as mentioned in the first issue) seems like much more of a (very long term) threat- if simple life can survive the vacuum of space and space debris can carry it around. Mind you when this comic was written, I'd have laughed myself hoarse at the very idea that a planet was an insufficient quarantine. I'd have also been a little shocked at the casual demolition of an entire ecosystem. (Still am- as you'd say, "Our heroes, ladies and gentlemen").

Oh Wow. Easily your best Trek Review yet. All the homage and parody of the classic series was delightful, and the end credits a real treat.

I especially admired your creativity in working around the "Computer so advanced that it takes over the world" plot.

I know I've said in the past that I didn't much care for the ongoing storylines, but I feel I should add that such was due to general business preventing me from following episodes regularly. Now that I have a bit more time on my hands, they've grown on me.

Good idea giving Pollo a new body, he looks like a Christmas present I wrapped! You look pretty good in a goatee Linkara. At 5,000 feet they could have climbed down via rope! lol

Now that was an awesome review. I didn't expect a "Mirror, Mirror" episode out of this but you surely did a lot right, from the obvious inference to "Distant Fire" to the random "Stingray" reference. (yeah, Gerry Andersen needs more respect) Though regarding the A.I...I just hope it turns out more like the Astro Megaship and less like H.A.L.

As for the mirrorverse, all I can think of is 90s Kid being a massive "Kingdom Come" and generally good 90s comics...and the Ninja-Style Dancer being a blabbermouth and having Ninja-Storm-esque ideas of what being a ninja is. Though sane Insano...reminds me a lot of the Red Hood from that TB&TB episode, which was awesome.

Razorgeist said...

Awesome episode Link. I like how you tributed "In a mirror darkly" as well as "Mirror Mirror".

Ok so in this mirror universe they have "The Forky Analysis" hosted by the Forky one who thinks that Final Fantasy 8 is the greatest game of all time oh and did I mention that he thinks Highlander 2 is the best sequel ever. He Kills Insano, and steals Mechakara. Poyo was also probably stolen from a now dead Spoony. Liz's Intelligence was obviously taken away from her(I mean D & D 4th edition REALLY!?). 80's Kid(who looks an awful lot like Tidus) is most likely tortured, and Harvey(who might be a pirate) is imprisoned, and there is no ninja style dancer because He actually liked Nightcat ......and Mirror Linkara IS A BOY!

Wow, this may very well be among the best episodes of Atop the Fourth Wall. Loved how you made this a homage to the Mirror Universe stories from Star Trek (i.e., the intro to A Mirror Darkly from Enterprise and Mirror, Mirror from the original series).

Also, loved the reference to Arthurian legend for Comic-Cron 1's AI. Can't wait to see where you go with this.

Star Trek 2 may very well be the worst Star Trek comic ever, due to the sheer amount of scientific inaccuracies and idiotic moments. I can't seem to think of anything worse than this,

As for the Mirror Universe, I think your Mirror counterpart's just like you, only with your worst traits (namely, narcissism, delusions of grandeur, and traces of sociopathy) multipled by a thousand.

I wonder, perhaps the Nostalgia Critic does positive reviews of classic family movies in that universe? Instead of Angry Joe, we have a Happy Joe who supports overrated games and acts as a mouthpiece for video game companies?

Michael Heide said...

So instead of burning the comic books he doesn't like, Evil Mirror Linkara (EMiL) just puts them on a shelf? I mean, what is Watchmen doing there? Making Comics? And Camelot 3000? If he really loves All Star Batman and Robin or Youngblood and hates Tom Strong, this seems inconsistent.

Unless EMiL just pretends to like Liefeld and modern-day Miller in order to appeal to the Mirror hipsters. In other words, he's that universe's Chris Bores.

Mirror!Linkara thoroughly reminded me of The Master from Classic Dr. Who. Is that the image you were going for?

How to use this in a later storyline... Well, since the Entity is a dimension hopper like Vyce, it could tempt Mirror!Linkara (I'll just call him Master Linkara because of the similarity mentioned before) to join in the battle to take over the universes.

Whatever happened to Linksano? He's a dimension traveler too, and has the ability to travel between dimensions very easily.

Perhaps you know of the Key? I'm sure some other fans do if you don't. It matches your magical/mystical theme, though.

Also, I play D&D 2nd and 3.5 Edition. I haven't looked at 4, but considering how some things were simplified between 2 and 3.5 and others were made more complex, I'm a bit scared to look at the Player's Manuel for 4th Edition.

Also: YAY, STINGRAY REFERENCE!!

Mirrorkara, an internet reviewer of comic books, was slowly driven mad by his own obsession. Over time, his mind was corrupted by what he thought he loved. This was all the machinations of the insidious Lord Vyce, who desired dimensional domination in order to save all of realty from a greater evil. It succeeded better than he'd hoped; however, there was a side effect Vyce had not planned for. In his new insanity, Mirrorkara gained a lust for conquest on par with Vyce's. He started by taking control of the small nation of Kickassia. Soon, his power expanded, and his forces grew larger in number. Eventually, Vyce challenged Mirrorcara and lost, returning to the shadows from whence he came; and his command ship fell into the hands of Mirrorkara, who planned to use it for global domination (of course.) Only a small resistance made of internet personalities stood in his way. Many have fallen or have disappeared into hiding, but the rest have not lost hope. On board the command ship, Nimue, the ship's AI, refuses to take orders from Mirrorkara, and at all opportunities prevents him from achieving his goals. Due to tinkering from the robot Tom Pollo, Nimue will only listen to one man, Insano, PhD. the reluctant leader of the resistance. While he has a penchant for inventing technological wonders that would indeed benefit mankind, he lacks the confidence to become a leader. It is stemmed from the fear of possibly killing his twin brother, Mirrorkara. He refuses to kill his twin, and only stuns Mirrorkara when they confront one another. Will Insano, PhD. man up and lay the smack down on the fedora wearing maniac? Will Mirrorkara succeed in penetrating Nimue's defenses? Find out next week. Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel.

Harvey is an asthmatic with a weak voice who needs a computer voice box to speak.
Ninja is loud and obnoxious like the Joker from Batman the animated series and ballroom dances.
Munro was assimilated by the Borg and is similar to Locutus.
90s Kid listens to hip hop and dresses like Vanilla Ice.
NC and Douchie are split personalities of the same person brought upon because of repressed emotions since NC does all reviews in a positive way.
Spoony is the same as ours only not Dr Insano.
Cinema Snob is a porn star/ director who can change into any animal.

I loved this video! It was a huge call back to the fun and silliness of the original Star Trek series.

I think it's a reference to a lot of art and literature which depicts the devil having a beard like that which came about when said artists and writers portrayed the devil as goat like compairing him to the traditional depiction of Baphomet, so it's kinda transitive evil counterparts have beards cause it makes them look like the devil cause the devil looks like baphomet

Excellent review, and the comic was deservedly slammed. However, there is one small area I must partly defend it on. Well, defend the first issue on. Regarding destroying the space trees, in some sci-fi settings there are trees which can launch into space. For example, the stage trees in Niven's Known Space series, which are basically trees that grow filled with rocket fuel.

A bit of WMG about the "Shades of Pluto" thing; it's possible that the writers went with the popular theory at the time that Vulcan WAS, actually, a planet in the solar system, right between Mercury and the sun. Sadly, it turned out to be a myth, like another substance that drove a famous episode of he original series (The Naked Time, with its drunkenness-infecting water, later dubbed "polywater" by crackpot scientists).

For some reason, I half-expected this to be a Star Wars comic review, given the nature of the parody. And by that, I mean have Mirror!Linkara be a Star Wars fanatic instead of a Star Trek fanatic.

On a final note, I wonder if you know of allstepisodes.com? pretty much as it says, though you'll have to be careful of dead links in it.

Sorry, for asking again, but I've tried so many thinks and I'm still not sure what to do. Maybe you could try to show me a link or site for help.

Sorry again. still love your work.

My Problem with the videos not loading. I said this to you in July. By the way the videos that do work are Phelous', Roses', Paw's and Film Brain's, if that helps. Still sorry. Peace.

Unfortunately, there's nothing I can really suggest beyond trying different browsers, updating flash, etc.

You could also try downloading the videos from the RSS feed:

Hey, Linkara, you should eview the first couple issues of Bionicle. They where published by DC around 2000-2001ish, and are aavailable via paperback volume distributed by Papercutz, the same company that re-distributes the Tales from the Crypt series. Man, they suck, and they'll give you plenty to complain about, but their suckiness seems to peak around 2002-2003ish. You should just review the 1st volume ,which has about 6 or seven issues and covers the first two seasons of Bionicle. The art can be messy at times, due to the sometimes complex structure of the Bionicles, the writing is all over the place due to the fact that DC tries to squeeze the chapter books into a 15 page comic, and there's just a lot of more stupid stuff that you'll probably pick up. However, they start to pick up and get really good in 2006, so I recommend reading 2006-and-above for leasure reading.

Btw, the art is by Caros D'Anda and Randy Elliot, and yes, it's half-assed.

SO maybe in the Mirror World, Iron Liz finished the Digimon 01 review!...Okay, THAT was douchey on my part, but I was kinda disappointed when nothing happened with that review. It just had a couple of parts and then stopped. I really wanted to see more.

There is a wallet on the Star Trek website store, it is designed to look like this comic. I just wonder why they chose this one, considering there are much better Star Trek comics out there.

Oh I do love some Mirror Mirror! Not only a damn interesting episode but it launched a whole set of portrayal of doppelgangers for decades since. I think it's an over looked ep when top 10s are made. Then again, I'm not a huge fan of City on the Edge of Forever which almost always wins for popularity poles. It's been forever since I've seen it but I think watching the other universe's Spock figuring things out was really cool.

I really love the alt. opening in this one.

So, does this mean in the Mirror Mirror AT4W 90s kid is a genius? What is he, 90s nerd? Instead of being all into Nirvana he's a huge JMS and Babylon 5 fan?

There's an image, 90s kid spouting off lines from Valen.

Hmm, does Harvey have a less than fine voice or does he just sing different toons since Pollo was still well, Pollo just in the Tom Servo body.

The Mirror Mirror opening, a subtle reminder to check out that anthology of Booster Gold.

I know it's a couple of years late ,but for the heck of it, I'm gonna do my own theory on the Mirrorverse. Though I did tweak a few other theories:

Do****y McNitpick started his own review show at some point, and the Nostalgia Moderate (mirror critic) often shows up and points out how stupid his show actually is.

Nostalgia Chick and Nella have the same roles ,but switched personalities.

Longbox of the Damned (at least the show) doesn't exist because Moarte (or whatever the heck his real name is) died of natural causes at the age of 31. Also since this is the mirror universe, I guess the Longbox would be a holy artifact.

90's Kid is more intelligent and a pacifist

Boffo is a serial killer, instead of a clown (apologies to all clowns everywhere)

The Angry and Happy Video Game Nerds have switched personalities.

And Mirrorkara's favorite comic is Holy Terror. I took a lucky guess since in the live show for last year's Animinneapolis (I can't go this year because Ill be in Flordia all July(and I have school in August) but I still look forward to videos there but let's get back to the main subject) that the comic's only advantage is that it's in color ,but is still nascuating , which leads me to Frank Miller. That and you're building up that review like crazy
