My big sister is big fan of Hellsing, but I personally never got into it. Alucard was presented waaaaayyyyy too invincible, making all the action scenes very boring since there was no doubt that he would just shrug off all his injuries and kill the bad guys.

Hellsing is a really fun one. It's rather interesting to see how Alucard's character evolves over time. In volume 1, he's some typical "too cool for you" mercenary who speaks sarcastically to his superiors and snarks about his job while he's killing ghouls, but in later volumes, he becomes far bigger than all of that. While he retains something of a sense of humor, he knows to take things far more seriously, smile or no smile. It's interesting to see the manga's author evidently change tacks as the series went on.

It reminds me of Berserk. In the first panels of the first volume, you see him having sex with a demon before blowing its head off, but the Guts from the present volumes would never consider such a thing. It's obvious that Miura had a different character in mind at first, but went for a better idea later, as did Hirano for Hellsing.

Second year watching the lbod please keep it going every year. I've read so many good comics because of this shorty, I really do like it when you give good reviews.

I've only seen one or two episodes and the Abridged Series, but I've actually been waiting for this since the trailer. Kind of helps that you got several requests to do this

OMG I love that ending XD. Adding that your "Funny Page" on Tv Tropes. In fact there's so many Longbox examples that I'm putting it in its own folder

i'm sorry, Moarte... but i've never really considered Hellsing to be all that scary. the potential is there, but it feels hindered by the action and humor at play. Alucard himself is a perfect microcosm of that; he's threatening, certainly, but in that smug demigod kind of way.

((i'm... legitimately surprised, Lewis. i wasn't expecting an actual reference to Hellsing Ultimate Abridged. my day is made))

So many people are going to wonder what I mean with By the Longbox!!..

To much Hellsing abridged references.
I like it.

Very funny ending!

Ah yes, Hellsing
one of the few mangas I bothered to follow all the way through

If you liked Hallsing, you may also like DC's I, Vampire
I sure did

I know you originally shrugged that series of as a Twilight rip-off, but the only thing it has in common with Twilight is that the main Vampires are hot and shirtless

Otherwise it's an awesome apocalyptic vampire series

Definitely one of my favorite mangas. Glad you did it for the Longbox.

Wasn't expecting the ending, though. Good work.

Hey Linkara, I may have a potential candidate for future Longbox episodes.

A while ago I heard about an old British anthology comic from the late 70s and early 80s called Misty, this was apparently a horror comic for girls. Here's the Wiki page for the series.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misty_%28comic%29

Now I dunno how practical it would be to get your hands on copies of the original issues (I have seen some copies on Ebay, and today I found someone selling a disc with scans of all the issues!) but earlier today I found an official site for the series, and they've apparently published two specials of new Misty material. The first one is sold out but the second appears to still be available.

The site itself is here: http://www.mistycomic.co.uk/

And you can get the second special here: http://www.mistycomic.co.uk/Mistycomic_Special_2009.html

Now I'll admit I haven't read any of these but I am intrigued by it so it could be worth Longboxing at some point.

Linkara, can you add Rosario Vampire (The manga naturally) to your longbox videos? They're really great

Best. Longbox Ending. Ever.

BTW, Lewis, is it bad that I have a countdown set up on my computer 'till the next AT4W comes out? I just wanted to know if I should seek professional help...

Looks like Moarte has inherited his awesome detective skills from Linkara.

(Yes, I am reffering to "Adamantium rage" episode).

Hellsing just rocks, plain and simple.

Wow, no laugh to end it-that's new.

Yeah, I've heard of Hellsing. I should get my hands on the Manga and the Anime on DVD.

Love the Abridged nods in this one. :D

A review of my favorite manga and on my birthday to boot. =D Thank you so much, Moarte!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who's tired of the romanticizing of vampires and want their bloodsuckers to have balls and a taste for the ol' ultraviolence. It gets way more gruesome with each volume, especially with the Millennium Organization gets involved (the Nazis Moarte was talking about). Plus, I recommend the anime Hellsing Ultimate, which follows the books to the letter with some additions and the original voice actors (both Japanese and English) from the first OVA.

I love me some Hellsing. Ridicuouls guns, over-the-top and absurd action, insane villains... it's basically the 90's comics done RIGHT.

Oh, and Alucard is the perfect Anti-Twilight vampire. Still a gentleman, but he doesn't really care to hide the inhuman monster he actually is :3

awesome manga
by the way, you might also like I, Vampire

It has vampires vs mummies!

Hey Lewis, what your quick thoughts on Hellsing?

Unknown said...

YES! I love this series!

I'll admit some of my bias comes from the fact both versions of the anime (one being less faithful to the manga because the manga was far behind at that point) that in English Alucard is voiced by Crispin Freeman.

Scariest thing in this series is the Catholic Church.

Which made later watching Trinity Blood very, very confusing at first.

Also, this series has one of the best things, a kick ass butler! Walter is so damn awesome.

Actually, come to think of it, a lot of comic or animated butlers are just hard core.

Alfred from Batman, Norman from Big O, Walter here for Hellsing...

Speaking of Japanese horror, maybe Linkara can review the American comic adaptation of Saya no Uta? Definitely terrible, especially when compared to the original visual novel.
