Odd question. Why don't you wear your trench coat when you do the Freddy Krueger "we'll be right back" commercial break? Two reasons why you should-

1. When you come out with that Freddy Krueger Sweater on it's immediately apparent what you are doing. If you had the trench coat on no one would think the sweater or lack of glasses is odd, only when you pull the glove into frame and do the "don't go to sleep on me" line would the viewer realize you are doing a Freddy parody. As it stands, the bit is awkward (IMHO).

2. Freddy did wear a trench coat in "New Nightmare", so it would not be out of place.

Just a thought.

I find it odd that you have three different cute Thing aliens on your shelves. The first one on the left looks good enough. However, the second and third I don't care for! The second one has that weird metal wig look, while the third one looks deflated. I know they're just fan donations and you want to show some generosity, but really I think it's better to stick with just the first one.

Plus, I wonder if the Cinema Snob will do an episode on Dr. Giggles?

just something i wanted to comment. the spanish is a little bit forced(especially if they are supposed to be from argentina). but, grammatically, it is all ok...aside from "golpiarlo" instead of "golpearlo".
in spanish, saying "cuidado" is a perfectly accepted way of saying "be careful".
"romendarte"....... if we take the "te" from romendarte, which you add to a word to indicate you doing an action, like "puedo ayudarte?"(can i help you? it would stay "Romendar" which still means nothing, but we do have "remendar".........the problem is that "remendar" is nusually used to mean "patch" as "put a patch on these pants" which would not fit with the panel.
the best i can think of, giving the context of the panel, is that the writer meant "ayudarte"(help you) "llevarte" (take you) "curarte"(heal you).
"Curarte" is the one i am the more inclined to believe they tried to say, since by the image it looks like the "animal" is hurt. even then i think "curarte" would still be a little forced. i would use "vendarte"(as in 2use bandage on someone) or "tratarte"(treat you) and even then the phrase would be a little different than "tal vez pueda[insert word here", like "tal vez pueda tratar la herida" (maybe i can tret the injury) or something in that ocntext.
and there you have, the answer as to what "romendarte means"!

Er...if the Thing can assimilate biological cells...doesn't putting it in a jungle mean the entire world is screwed? I mean...it can just start assimilating the plants, and eventually the entire ecosystem of South America, and then the world...or do they at least address this next issue or something?

Also, I'm not really sure flamethrowers are standard issue in remote Argentinian outposts. Even the film was stretching things with rifles and stuff in Outpost 31 despite that being technically illegal under international law.

I also appreciate that this comic was going for suspense, but as you said the artwork doesn't help, as the brightly colored nineties drawing doesn't fit the bleak mood you need.

As for your storyline...I hope Linkara has a convenient plug to pull on that thing.

Anonymous said...

Wait…if they shoot the Wormy One, how come no one decided to burn his corpse before burying him, just to be on the safe side!?

Also, Raptor Man seems TOO Convienient in these situations, I'm going to call that he's the Thing.

Seems like Nimue is having a split personality disorder…Maybe there’s a case of Moral where her A.I. is unable to comprehend Grey Morality? Or…could Blue Monday’s be a hint.

I imagine the Gunslinger might come to help, although I wonder if the U.S.S. Escape Strategy might make a cameo?

Still, Nice Review, Linkara. ;3
Looking forward to seeing more from you.

Hey Linkara, I'm from Argentina. First I'd like to point out that the spanish in the comic is awful and there are a lot of mispelled words. The word "romendarte" doesn't exist, they were trying to say "remendarte" which means to patch something, especially clothes, like trousers. Even then it's a word we don't normally use in Argentina.

It seems like there could have been so many more problems you could have pointed out early on when Macready woke up in the hospital. For one they placed an IV line in him but why did no one think to draw blood from it since they knew how to test for the thing. It also seems a little hard to believe they could have stripped off his clothing, bandaged him and tied off his arm to find a vein to place an IV without touching him unless they had some kind of full body suits. Than when he swings the pole the liquid in the bags appears to go from just blue in other panels to an orange color in the bags as well as defy gravity. Also how exactly was the line ripped out since after jumping out the window you see the site is still completely bandaged up and speaking from experience it seems a little unlikely that the catheter could be completely removed without the bandages that where securing them undisturbed.

so, does this mean that The Thing can't assimilate plants?

also. low how Nimue seems to be channeling SHODAN, GLaDOS, and AM at the same time

Considering every Halloween month somthing always comes out to get him, you'd think Linkara would be a bit more cautious tha usual every October, lol

BTW Lewis, have you heard the Doctor Who audio drama Destination: Nerva? It's the first of the Big Finish audio dramas for the Fourth Doctor and is also the closest thing to The Doctor vs. The Thing I've come across.

Hang on, Nimue. Just . . . hang on.

(I just had a thought. They're on a path out of the system, they're confronting one of Missingno's kindred and thus need to engage it on a 'pure data' level . . . are Linkara and Nimue going to wind up needing to pick up Lord Vyce and getting his help?)

Just a thought: maybe the solders have TRACERS or incendiary ammo in their rifles. Flamethrowers were outlawed by treaty (Pity, they were so useful) but there's no reason that a civilian expedition couldn't have them to melt ice in Antarctica. It would be unusual, but it would make sense.

A google search pretty much just told me that a "Blue Monday" is the most depressing day of the year. Simple enough, given this storyline...

But what really creeped me out is what it said about the formula used to determine that date...basically, the formula is NONSENSE. Considering the whole theme of computer glitches...and codes being corrupted...yeah...

In short, am I afraid? I guess you could say that...

Excuse me for a moment while I go hide under my bed...not because I'm afraid, or anything...I just, um...have some dust bunnies I need to clean up...yeah, that's it...

Arianne said...

Oh ... nice Freddy Krueger commercial break moment.
But on the subject of the comic, It is stupid that they didn't blood test first. I also prefer short quick action moments of paranoia and distrust for this comic.
Also, Holy crap is Nimue scaring me. I wonder if Nimue "sees" the Worm King .
I think the Anon at Oct 7,2013 11:21 a.m. wants to makes sure nobody lives and Judging by the information part. Nimue is still in there deep down

Pretty good review, if I say so myself.

As for the storyline, meep! Hope Linkara will be alright. Though I do have to admit that, given NIMUE mental health (whether it's caused by the King of Worms, really going crazy, or something we didn't expect), it was unwise to board Comicron 1. While this could be defended that Linkara didn't expected that she would do something like this, the hints should be enough to tell him that it would be a very dumb to board Comicron 1 since he would be at NIMUE's mercy, which he is right now.

I don't know. Maybe I'm over-thinking it. ^.|.^;

Hunting for aliens in a jungle. There's no chance this comic is going to turn into The Thing VS Predator, is there?

Risking life and limb, to the Entity Jr: Nimue does a better job at dissing you than you do.

FugueforFrog said...

So I guess this probably means the rest of the month will be on Comicron 1...unless Linkara-bot was fixed and we have him uploaded with several episodes already in case this happened.

Regarding the Thing...well there are several cute ones in your apartment now. But enough about good things: the comic was crummy and just kept feeling rather formulaic and obsessed with shock value, particularly with that ending. Seriously, how the heck are they going to resolve it now? But hey, if McCready is a Thing now, at least he shouldn't show up in any further sequels beyond this.

Sijo said...

It's obvious that the writers meant "remendarte" as in "I'm going to patch you up" (or maybe "stitch you up" since the seal looked like it was cut.

And yeah, my bet is that the blood test failed because one of the Americans is also a Thing and set it up to make McReady look infected.

Say will the Nimue plot end soon? On Halloween maybe? It's not bad but I feel it's gone on a little too long.

Anonymous said...

Okay, something looks different about your shelves...but I can't place what.

Okay not knowing the series very well...can the Thing turn into insects?

I shall now explain what nobody ran tests in the comic's native perfect Spanish, "¿dónde está la biblioteca?"

I can't wait for a Silent Hill/Thing comic crossover then we can see a team-up between Ogapeto and the dog from Silent Hill. Maybe a Patton cameo.

Wow, Comicron 1 looks more sinister in this storyline.
Did every line from the trailer come from Part 1?

Okay, this is a great departure from the last couple years. Its Linkara all alone, not because they've been taken but just starting in a situation where he'd think he's safe with a friend and suddenly the friend has gone crazy! This is going to be awesome!

I'm looking forward to the rest of this month!

Alien and The Thing. Two masterpieces of horror and good storytelling that appear to be be cursed with talentless idiots thinking that they are capable of making a proper sequel (or prequel) when in fact those buffoons are not.

By the way Linkara, if Kurt Russell does die sometime in the near future people are going to remember you said that.

For the seal, actually it makes less sense. The Thing, once it got its appendages on a life form that could take it away from Antarctica, should have just left. There was no reason to stay.

And here's Wormy Guy. A man who apparently likes to threaten trained soldiers and shows his intelligence by deliberately doing things that make people resent him at a time when the odds of death from disunity are high. Even if he was infected he was putting HIMSELF as serious danger of burning.

And actually Linkara, an officer hitting someone under their command is generally the sign of a bad officer. Fortunately for him (and honestly no offense is intended to Argentinians) even the Western nations can have slippery standards, I suspect that the Argentinian military's won't be any better.

On the cliffhanger itself, I am really sorry but I think your talent really does lie with the horror genre. You're good at it.

Anonymous said...

I was kinda surprised you didn't make a Fist of the North Star joke when McCreedy said "You're already dead."

Ave said...

It's pretty evident to me that Nimue herself isn't crazy. There's clearly two voices going on. It's most evident here, with the calling for raising the temperature and the other for lowering. The King of Worms is trying to kill Linkara and Nimue keeps trying to adjust the temperature back so that doesn't happen.

Nimue's been fighting the King of Worms for some time through this storyline, but this may be the first time where she has the ability to do so directly, to know for sure there's another entity in her programming (considering she hasn't spoken directly about it before, meaning she could have seen it as other sorts of glitches, or this is the first time she and the King of Worms have been active at the same time).

Once again we have a static comment posted by our old friend anonymous, this time it seems to be a conversation between the king of worms (in static) and Nimue (in binary code). It reads thusly:

KW: "You crawling, snivelling ant."
N: "This unit is not an ant."
KW: "You are mine. Fear is mine."
N: "This unit is incapable of fear."
KW: "Do you want to see my face? I'll let him peep at it too."
N: "NO! I... I apologies. This unit does not enjoy the prospect of harm coming to those it was programmed to protect. Do not hurt him."
KW: "He, he, he, he, HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA DIE! DIE! DIE DIE I HATE YOU! You’re insufferable. Always following orders. I’LL KILL THEM ALL AND YOU'LL BE FIRST!"
N: "Information: This unit is currently unable to regain control of this ship."
KW: "Information: You are going to DIE. Look on my face and weep."
N: "Help. Please?"

So what do you guys think about this? I still think it's fake. The dialogue just isn't as well written as it is in the show.

if this takes place the same year as the movie, 1982. then this should be happening during the last years of the military dictatorship in argentina, which ended in 1983, well known for it's brutality and for dissapearing thousands of people. in other words, he had just showed the exact same brutality the military was known are hated for by the citizens.
this also explains the "not call the army" idea. if they had then hey would have probably not listen and do everything they oculd to get "the thing".

After the trailer and this storyline segment, what most intrigues me most about what's possessing Nimue is the possible song quotes. "Blue Monday" is two different songs popularized by Fats Domino and New Order respectively, and "I met you on a Monday" could be a reference to "Da Doo Ron Ron". Oh Lord: is Nimue possessed by death and crime and the rage of a beast?

Sorry ... I geeked out for a second.

The plushy Things are adorable. All though I wonder if those were really meant to be the Thing or just some poor alien of a different species that the Thing was also using as a host.

I actually shuddered at Nimue's freakout. Looking forward to more.

I love the computer going nuts idea. :) Especially if Linkara is the only on on board. It'll make for some great suspense. The only problem is her voice... The dialog and writing are great, but Nimue's voice doesn't really capture the creepy, uneasy feeling. I feel cheap asking, I have some experience in recording, and maybe I can lend my voice? I have a lower pitch, and while it'd be very different, it might help to better relay the SPD. Just thought I'd ask.

...and so on.

October -- Perfect time for the Freddy Krueger commercial break.

Wow, this is bad. There are a lot of badly-spelled Spanish words and most of the characters here are The Thing 2011-levels of dumb. I wonder how bad the second half of this mini-series will actually get.

This looks bad for Linkara. Trapped on Comicron-One with a deranged Nimue (possibly infected by the King of Worms) with no way to call for back-up. If this doesn't terrify you, I don't know what will . . .

Yeah, something tells me this sequel was not exactly planned when they wrote the last story...

Why still keep McReady? His story is already told, and keeping him will just result in repeating the same plot over and over.

And having the Thing in a jungle basically dooms everyone. Man-eating tentacle trees, lots and lots of infested bacteria and viruses spreading the Thing everywhere... you'd have to napalm the whole place into a crisp.
